Rapid industrial growth in India has caused the country to realize the strategic importance of its zinc and lead deposits. Private companies, nationalized in 1965, are now a corporate public sector organization that is making great strides in developing the nation's lead-zinc mining capability. The main mining area is centered around Zawar at Rajasthan. It consists a group of mines - Mochia, Balaria, Zawarmala and Baroi. Mining activities have also been extended by opening the mines at Rajpura-Dariba at Rajasthan, Sargipallie at Orissa and Agnigundala at Andhra Pradesh. A huge deposit has been explored at Agucha in the Bhilwara district but full-scale production has not yet begun. Annual consumption of zinc and lead in India has risen steadily from 25 and 7.9 kt (27,500 and 8700 st), respectively, in 1973-1974 to 162.8 and 80 kt (179,450 and 88,000 st), respectively, in 1989-1990. Mine production has also risen consistently to cope with the increased metal demand. The mining company hopes to increase production at existing mines and upgrade the beneficiation and smelting facilities. Moreover, mining operations may be expanded by opening up new units that are now awaiting governmental clearances. Improving the state-of-the-art of tunneling is a continuing challenge to those involved in underground construction. New methods and procedures are usually evolved over a relatively long period of time as compared to advancements in other types of construction. To a large extent this is probably due to the fact that tunneling deals with a material or medium - the rock structure - whose physical properties are not only extremely varied, but in many instances virtually unknown until time of penetration. This hovering of the unknown tends to make "non believers" of many and at best leads to a general reluctancy of accepting new ideas or procedures. The situation is further complicated by: 1) discrepancies in terminology and respective meanings as used by different disciplines to describe, define or evaluate pertinent factors and their relative effect on the tunneling process and 2) the fact that no two tunneling situations are identical with respect to either geological conditions or construction and contractual requirements. In spite of the above there have been many successfully completed tunnels which make it apparent that both the technical and practical expertise needed to develop or project improvements is available within the industry. "The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

Potential large scale uses in secondary battery systems and fusion reactors together with a steady increase in demand for conventional applications, particularly in aluminum smelting, has resulted in an increasing interest in lithium and its compounds. Current world requirements are met from both granitic pegmatites and non-pegmatitic sources and although the emphasis in this short paper is on the pegmatitic minerals, and, in particular, on their "direct usage" applications, a short summary of other sources and requirements for chemical production is included for the sake of completeness.

The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

INTRODUCTION Dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning uses air currents as the separating medium. Pneumatic cleaning in the United States today is limited to three or four operations. In fact, the quantity of bituminous coal cleaned pneumatically has declined from its peak in 1965 of about 25.4 million tons (23.1 Mt) to its current level (1988) of less than 4 million tons (3.64 Mt) annually, as shown in Fig. 7-9 1. In 1940, pneumatic methods accounted for 15% of the bituminous coal and lignite cleaned in the United States as given in Table 7-32. Currently, pneumatic methods account for less than 2%. The largest air plant was built in Pennsylvania about 1968 with 14 units processing 1400 tph (1280 t/h) of 3/, in. X 0 (19 mm X 0) raw feed and two additional units retreating middlings. This same plant is one of only three or four plants still operating air-cleaning devices in the US. A wet plant was added in 1985 to increase the efficiency of cleaning the fines. The air plant is still used as a scalping operation for the coarse material. Five additional operations are either no longer in production or have discontinued the use of air tables within the last year. Wet cleaning methods are now being employed at the facilities that have discontinued air table operation. he advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. The advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. From a utility's viewpoint, pneumatic cleaning offers the best delivered Btu cost, based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. At first glance, the similarity between the fine grinding of cement clinker and coarse grinding done in other mineral processing industries may seem remote. However, it is interesting to note that the mill discharge fineness of cement clinker is only 70 to 90% passing 100 mesh and quite comparable to other mineral processing grinds. There is however, a greater dependence of the mill on the air separator in the finish grinding of cement clinker than in other mineral processing industries which explains why a technique to guage the balance between a mill and separator first began in the cement industry. (1) More recently an adaptation of this technique has shown its application to the processing of phosphate rock and is the central topic of this paper. First, an explanation of work done with fine grinding cement circuits seems appropriate together with a few general comments regarding cement. When unground or partially ground cement clinker enters a finish grinding mill, it is subjected to mechanical forces of impact and attrition which gradually reduce it to a range of sizes characteristic of finish cement. That is, a range of approximately 1 to 125 microns. The large proportion of superfine particles relative to the coarse and intermediate size particles is typical of portland cement particle size distribution. It accounts for the workability characteristics of plastic concrete and the early strength development of concrete which is so necessary to its successful use as a construction material. For this reason It is quite evident from quality control tests when a shortage of superfines exists.

The Thaumasia Joint-Venture, composed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Soletanche- Bachy and Bessac, completed the construction of the underground section of line 2 of the Nice tramway, which comprised a 3.2 km twin track tunnel and four underground stations, in a particularly complex urban and geotechnical context. The density of the surface structures, as well as the presence of many historic buildings on its route made the construction of the tunnel even more sensitive, with a settlement threshold of Half an Inch. The joint venture faced a complex subsoil, varying from one extreme to another from highly plastic clay layers to fibrous peat and to cobbles with very high permeability, with artesian ground water, and with unforeseen anthropogenic obstacles in the tunnel section Due to the diversity of the problems encountered and their variability over short distances, the construction of the underground section of the Nice tramway, in its very sensitive urban context, undeniably constituted an unprecedented challenge.

Traditional headed rebar has existed in the mining industry as a ground support product for many years. The head of a rebar bolt is most commonly produced by hot upset die forging. Upset die forging produces a rugged, simple head that performs well. Certain elements of the head must comply with regulatory standards, such as ASTM F432-95, which offers a standard test procedure to ensure quality of the product. The head style produced by all major manufacturers has been optimized to reduce manufacturing costs, provide greater miner safety and provide an excellent performing product. Observations were made in some mines of heads failing under in-situ loading. These observations could not be replicated according to the ASTM testing method. This paper highlights the problem and how a solution was developed. The development includes pictures of in-situ failures from the underground operations, laboratory replication tests indicating how this loading occurs, and then the use of this calibrated test method to validate the new design created.

Joplin, one of the most famous zinc mining camps of a bygone era, is today experiencing a healthy growth in manufacturing enterprises. Manufacturing requires water, and knowledge of its availability and quality often is the main factor in location of industry. For this reason in January 1964, on the suggestion of the former State Geologist, Dr. Thomas R. Beveridge, a study of the water resources of the Joplin District was undertaken as a cooperative effort of the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources now under the direction of Dr. William C. Hayes and the U. S. Geological Survey. The project area is in southwestern Missouri on the Springfield Plateau and is bordered on the west and north by the Osage Plains of Kansas and Western Missouri, (fig. l). Upland altitudes rise from 900 feet above sea level in the west to 1400 feet in the east. The countryside is rolling to moderately hilly and much is excellent farmland.

"The Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline tunnel project is the largest (7.8 km) and the deepest (90 m) subsea tunnel in South Korea. This tunnel will house a pipeline to carry natural gas from the mainland to Geoje Island southeast of the country to alleviate the increased demands for natural gas, especially in the winter season. Tunneling is currently underway using two slurry shield TBMs of 3.5 m diameter. This paper describes the major design elements of the tunneling machines and their performance evaluation. For this purpose, a thorough analysis of geotechnical information was performed to evaluate the tunnel elevation to reduce the risk of tunneling under high water pressure in unstable and permeable rock mass under 9 bar water pressure. TBM specification and TBM performance were also analyzed using different methods, including well-known models as well as a rotary cutting machine test developed in house in Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. INTRODUCTION High demand for natural gas, especially in winter season was the primary driving factor for the design of the Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline project. This project is located southeast of South Korea between Jinhae district and Geoje Island and runs for over 50 km length. The mid part of this project includes a 3.5 m diameter subsea tunnel consisting of two sections of Geoje to Jiri Island (4.3 km) and Jinhae to Jiri Island (3.5 km). Figure 1 shows the tunnel project location and its layout. Figure 2 shows the geological profile along the tunnel. As can be seen, the tunnel passes mainly through three rock types: granite, tuff breccia, and andesite tuff. This tunnel was planned to be constructed by two face pressurized shielded TBMs and to be lined with a segmental lining of 2.8 m internal diameter. The major challenge for this tunnel is its maximum expected water pressure at the tunnel invert (8.83 bar). At such a high water pressure, the TBMs required special design to ensure they can handle unexpected water pressure and to ensure the risks for the TBM maintenance intervention are minimal. In this regard, a thorough analysis was conducted on the TBM design parameters and geotechnical information to define required TBMs’ design parameters and to identify the safest tunnel elevation. This paper provides a brief overview of the project geotechnical information, TBM selection and its design specification, tunnel elevation selection, and TBM penetration rate evaluation. In this regard, a rotary cutting machine testing equipment was used to perform trial tests on a similar rock type encountered along the tunnel for performance evaluation and optimization."

A couple of years ago, one of the major television networks produced a series on the environment. One episode in the series dealt with the nation's solid waste problem and some of the research being done to solve it. It was interesting to listen to one researcher who was attempting to develop a glass that when broken would dissolve in water. It was said that using this glass would eliminate over 100 million tons of solid wastes each year. At first glance, it would appear that this research-effort would make a significant contribution to environmental pollution control; however, if one pauses to consider the water, he can see that this solution to the solid waste problem may well contribute to a water pollution problem. The dissolved material must either end up in our surface streams or be removed in waste treatment systems. Either alternative may have a more adverse effect on the environment than the original problem. With today's emphasis on the environment, it is important that the effects of our activities be studied in depth. Then, by properly planning the activity, the adverse effects can be minimized. The coal mining industry 100 years ago was in the same boat, as our glass maker, is today. Unfortunately, it too failed to consider all the effects of its activities and as a result, in Pennsylvania, there are over 5000 miles of streams adversely affected by coal mine drainage. The situation is improving, however, because mine operators are beginning to recognize and accept the methods for controlling coal mine drainage. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the measures for the control of coal mine drainage and to set forth the factors that affect these controls.

It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a full-size shaft are underway.

Silicon carbide (SiC) can be produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperature, The product is a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 micron in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean high grade Sic whiskers product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90 percent. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

"Prevalence of lung disease in younger miners surprised industry regulators, congressional members, researchers and black lung clinic staff members. Mitigation researcher focused on low-coal mining in the Appalachian regions until Miners Colfax Medical Center (MCMC) Black Lung Clinic examinations discovered 25 of 72 Wyoming coal miners with lung disease. To reverse recent upward trend in lung disease, research programatic have been directed at reducing exposure to respirable “float” dust. This paper suggests broadening the scope of research to include boundary detection in efforts to improve outcomes. Beginning with a better understanding of biochemistry of anaerobic bacteria methylation processes precipitating sulfur and heavy metals into thin seam boundary layers. Expanding research and development objective to focused on minimization of bit-pick crushing cone volume and preventing mining thin boundary coal layers and out-of-seam dilution. Black lung clinical evaluations of miner will confirm outcomes directed towards reduced occupational disease and smoke stack emissions. INTRODUCTION Miner exposer to bit-tip crushing cone volume, fragmentation and auger movement generated respirable “float” dust and boiler emissions are related science-technology –engineering-mathematics (STEM) problems. Formidable but not intractable problems are driven by oxidation of upper flood plain elements in the periodic table and biochemical metabolic presses occurring in coal basin. Because of burial compaction, quartz and trace heavy metals (Fe2+, Mg2+) are concentrated in thin seam boundary layers. By not cutting through thin boundary coal layer and out-of-seam into hard quartz containing rock layers, miner lung disease and smoke stack emissions are minimized. Cutting bit-pick elastic wave hydrodynamic principle force vectors in the coal layer must be aligned to minimize respirable dust generation, constrained by fragmentation size. Dust abatement by water spray and machine design are effective; but for, failure to address cutting cone dust volume generation and its distribution along run-of-mine (ROM) transportation systems the boiler. Real-time precision thickness measurements by integrated cutting drum (icDrum) sensor, machine man-interdiction from a dust free control room, is a cost effective way to prevents respirable dust exposure. The recommended STEM research and demonstration initiative addresses issues raised by discoveries of increased rate of lung disease discovered in young miners and concerns over emissions from coal-fired electric generation stations (Global Warming). In-mine demonstrations must be validated by on-site MCMC mobile Black Lung Clinic data acquisition and analysis."

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam strata and overburden/underburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs, utilizing sitespecific structural setting of the mines. The importance of adequate data collection, monitoring, and prudent structural designs has long been recognized and utilized in many U.S. operations with adequate engineering resources. In this paper, two case studies of historic seismic events and contributing factors, in deep coal and trona mines with overburden thickness exceeding 1,500 ft, are reviewed using observations and analysis. By back analyzing the overburden response in a historic room-and-pillar coal mine, the overburden collapse mechanism associated with a 3.3 magnitude seismic event is reviewed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths. Similar high-order seismic events were also experienced in trona mines of the Green River Basin during 1990s, interrupting room-and-pillar mining and creating ground control concerns. Efforts to improve structural mine designs are described in this paper leading to stable and productive operations for decades following the high-order seismic events in both coal and trona case studies. These efforts included improving room-and-pillar extraction layouts and utilizing properly designed longwall mining techniques that were verified using long-term geotechnical instrumentation. The study mines are located on the Wasatch Plateau (WP), Utah and in the Green River Basin (GRB), Wyoming. More recently, in Utah’s East Mountain alone, Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has extracted some 165 million tons of coal without any significant incidents. Overall, favorable geologic conditions and prudent mine layout designs are key elements to this successful experience in both single- and two-seam layouts. Utilization of conservatively designed longwall mining technique in the GRB has been geotechnically stable, using reported experience in 15 panels and monitoring results in the Northwest (NW) District with measurable longwallinduced seismicity being rare. These studies demonstrate a considerable amount of progress that has been made within the last four decades in the application of longwall mining technique, integrated monitoring, and analyses for the verification of structural designs in mines in the United States.

A fundamental study of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of coarse Florida phosphate has led to some interesting discoveries. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that conditioning time and mixing intensity greatly affect the grades and recoveries of the phosphate minerals and quartz in the rougher concentrate. In particular, as the conditioning time or mixing intensity increased, the phosphate recovery remained constant while the amount of quartz floated decreased. This phenomenon is contrary to conventional wisdom and could lead to a more efficient coarse flotation circuit.
