To restore ventilation and prevent the accumulation of explosive or toxic gases by quickly installing substitutes for stoppings blown down by an explosion. Approach Temporarily replace blown down stoppings with a parachute-shaped brattice which can be erected in minutes. How It Works The self-sealing brattice is secured to the roof, ribs and floor by anchoring its nylon edge strip at several points using extensible poles, shads, or available projections such as roof bolts. The air pressure in the entry pops open the chute of lightweight sailcloth, forcing it tightly against floor, roof and rib. See Figure 1. This emergency brattice has been tested at two locations in the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. In a test last December, one MESA inspector wearing full rescue apparel (including self contained breathing apparatus) installed a self sealing brattice in an entry at the Bruceton Mine. Although he did not have any previous experience with the device, he easily erected it in slightly less than 10 minutes, using two extensible supports (pogo sticks). Research to improve and refine the self-sealing brattice is continuing.

Reduced-scale models have long been used in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer for studying fundamental flow relations or the performance of prototype designs under prescribed conditions. The pilot plant is a common tool of chemical engineering for investigating process variables and as an integral step in developing a new process. The metallurgical industry was rather slow to recognize the applicability of these techniques to some of its established and rather complex processes, but there has been a rapidly increasing number of applications of the principles of modeling in process metallurgy since World War II. Not only have pilot-scale operations been employed for developing methods of extracting metals that have recently achieved commercial importance, as well as new processes for some of the commoner metals, but models have also been used for engineering studies aimed at better understanding of the controlling, variables of time-honored conventional processes, It appears that the principles of similitude have become accepted as a useful tool, when properly applied, in metallurgy as in other fields of engineering. Much of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Laboratory, Region V, involves study of high-temperature smelting and refining processes for ferrous and related metals in pilot-scale equipment, such as the experimental blast furnace, converter, open-hearth, arc furnace, and rotary kiln. It was appropriate for the work of this laboratory that guiding principles for designing apparatus and interpreting results should be set down and that a bibliography of related work should be available for reference. A summary of the principles of model study and a brief review of some of the more noteworthy general papers have been published elsewhere.3/ Also, the Bureau of mines plans to publish a report of investigations describing its experimental work in this field. The bibliography is presented here as a service to others who may have use for it.

In studies of mine and tunnel ventilation conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , various smokes are used to determine flow of air , direction of the currents , and the rate of mixing . The instrument for generating streams of sulphur trioxide (SO ) smoke , shown in the drawing herewith, has been found helpful , convenient and practicable for such purposes ; it is also especially useful in some places where fire for generating smokes is not permissible . The apparatus consists simply of a glass tube containing fuming sulphuric acid on granular pumice stone , attached to a rubber syringe bulb . When a squeeze of the bulb blows air through the tube , a stream of dense white smoke evolves, which follows and makes visible the air currents . The tubes after preparation are hermetically sealed to prevent deterioration . When ready for use , they are easily broken open at a file scratch for the purpose on both tips , and inserted into a rubber nipple at the bulb . Sometimes it is of advantage to attach them to a longer rubber tube leading to the bulb . Tubes of the size shown (about 1/2 inch outside diameter by 5 inches long) are usually sufficient for the needs of a day . Thereafter they cease to fume because the acid absorbs moisture from the air and looses its effectiveness . Smaller sizes of tubes and larger have been made , but the size shown has proved most practicable . Immediately after a person has finished using a tube it should be buried or disposed of in a place where it will not be touched by shoes or clothing, or come in contact with wooden floors , furniture , or metals , because the acid , which will eventually leak from the tubes , is highly corrosive . -- Reports of Investigations , Department of the Interior , Bureau of Mines .

"The sulphidizing filming of minerals in oxide ores as a preliminary treatment to aid their recovery by flotation is known practice. In this work the use of barium polysulphide does not appear to have been considered. A study of the properties of barium lead to the following comparative investigation of the sulphides and polysulphides of the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals. It is thought that barium polysulphide may prove to be a more satisfactory sulphidizing reagent than others now in use under conditions that favor the cheaper barium reagent.For the investigation two fairly typical oxidized ores of copper and lead were selected. The copper ore came from the Big Indian Mine in southeastern Utah, and assayed 3.8% Cu; the copper was present in a sandstone gangue mainly as the carbonates, malachite and azurite, with less than 0.2% as sulphides, or silicate. The lead ore is from the Tintic Standard mine in the Tintic district, Utah. It is typical of the oxidized lead-silver ores of that district; the lead is present in an oxidised form in a siliceous gangue, much: Uncolored by ferric oxide. The sample assayed 5.15% Pb and 11.3 oz. Ag.In addition to the results obtained in this investigation, there are included some results secured by Mr. J. B. Lain, consulting metallurgist of Reno, Nevada, on a sample of ore from the Chino Copper Co. The ore assayed about 1.7% Cu, of which about 0.25% was nonsuiphide."

In October 1949 the College Park Branch of the Mining Division instituted a survey of the New England pegmatites. Many of the New England pegmatite deposits were superficially examined, and the Bumpus quarry in Albany, Oxford County, Maine (see fig. 1), was selected for a diamond-drill exploratory-development project to supply information for developing more economical mining methods and no increasing production of beryl and other scarce minerals associated with pegmatitic intrusives. The Bumpus quarry has been mined intermittently by three operators since it was opened in 1927. At the time of drilling, the vein or dike (see figs. 2 and 3) had been mined to a depth of 60 feet for a strike length of 280 feet. The dike averages 40 feet in thickness and dips 50 degrees southeast. The Bureau of Mines drilled seven diamond-drill holes between September 27 and November 27, 1950. These holes showed that the dike persists for at least 350 feet to the east and probably 200 foot to the west of the present excavation. The drilling also indicated that the dip, as exposed at the surface, continued unchanged at 500 to a depth of at least 50 foot below the pit. The dike was not delineated, although it fingered out as pegmatite interbanded with Granite, diorite, and gneiss in diamond-drill hole B-4, approximately 250 feet west of the pit. Further drilling will be necessary to find the extent of this pegmatite dike and to determine the safest and most economic mining system.

This report describes the design and operation of a digital instrumentation package for the Bureau of Mines improved torsion pendulum, a scientific instrument that measures the vibration damping of metallic materials. The new design eliminates manual analog-to-digital conversion, reduces the data acquisition time, and increases the precision of the measurements. The digital output can be coupled directly to a micro-processor or computer to produce the final data in real time.

Research in connection with occupational diseases, including silicosis or, more definitely, pneumoconiosis, has been prosecuted much more actively in North American countries during the past 5 or 10 years than in any other known period. This applies particularly to the United States, owing largely to the fact that in recent years compensation for ill health presumed to be caused by industrial work of certain kinds is being paid to a far greater extent in this country than previously. Most other countries have had occupational-disease laws for many years. Court rulings in the United States, which started 5 or 6 years ago, have given a few heavy verdicts in connection with ill health or death caused, or alleged to have been caused, by some phase of occupational work other than traumatic injury, and these have called attention to the fact that ill health and even incapacitation can be caused by some kinds of employment. With the onset of the world-wide financial depression, which resulted in permanent abandonment of many business or industrial enterprises (among them mines) in the United States, the workers frequently believed that they could expect nothing in the future from their former employers, hence they felt free to demand monetary benefits or damages because of ill health which they suffered, or thought they suffered, because of their previous employment. The result was a flood of lawsuits and. compensation claims for occupational disease, particularly where dust was involved.

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. Purpose: Marras et al. developed a technique to evaluate sincerity of effort during dynamic trunk motion performance. The validity and reliability of the technique have not been evaluated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to first determine whether or not a sincerity of effort measure correctly identified those giving a sincere effort in a blinded randomized control trial and second to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Methods: This article reports the findings of a two phase study. In phase one, the blinded evaluation, participants were randomly assigned to either a sincere or insincere performance condition. An examiner tested participants without knowledge of the participant's group membership. In the second phase, two examiners evaluated each participant twice to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Results: In the blinded phase the specificity was 100% and sensitivity was 90% for identifying sincere and insincere effort, respectively. Phase two results showed no significant difference in probability of sincere effort between raters or between testing sessions. Conclusion: A performance criterion that accurately identifies sincere vs insincere group membership during functional evaluations was identified. There were no significant differences between raters or between testing sessions. These findings indicate that this test is reliable and possesses good predictive validity in assessing sincerity of effort.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

Provide a simple and effective means of measuring mining-induced pressure changes in coal mine roof and pillars. Approach Develop a reliable, easy to fabricate and install borehole instrument which measures mining-induced pressure changes in pillars and in the mine roof. Ground pressures are monitored through use of aluminum platens coupled with d copper flat jack. How It Works The Bureau's instrument measures mining-induced pressure changes by transmitting strata pressure through the aluminum platens to an oil-filled borehole platened flat jack (BPF). Pressure in the flat jack is displayed on a gage located outside of the borehole. The instrument is in-stalled in the borehole by inflating the flat jack using a hand-held hydraulic pump. In addition, the platens have been designed to allow up to three BPFs to be installed in a single borehole, thus permitting pressure change measurements in more than one direction from a single borehole. Theoretical and experimental research sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines shows that medium frequency (MF) electromagnetic (EM) signals propagate great distances in an underground environment such as a tunnel or mine. This propagation is enhanced by different mechanisms associated with the geology, and with the existence of metallic conductors in the entryways. In stratified geologies, a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode of signal propagation is possible if a low conducting layer is bounded above and below by higher conducting layers. In general, the difference in conductivities must be at least several orders of magnitude. Such geological waveguide conditions often exist in underground mines. Propagation via the waveguide effect is known as the "seam mode" of propagation. Another mode of propagation, the "tunnel mode," exists in underground entries with electrical conductors such as power cables, metal pipes, and phone lines. A monofilar mode of propagation exists when signals are impressed upon conductors and return via the surrounding rock. A bifilar mode of propagation exists when all signals exist only on local conductors. In a given location there is a combination of monofilar and bifilar modes that make possible an interaction between the conductors and a transmitting device in a tunnel or entryway. Signals can be impressed on or received from local conductors via magnetic dipole antennas (loops) or line couplers.

Summary Cost models have, long been confined to the accumulation and analysis of static-data.. While historical and time study data are valuable for control of existing operations, for new systems and equipment, and for projections, they need to be adjusted or modified. The availability of computer-oriented systems simulators provide yet another method for costing these systems and equipment. This investigation has introduced a concept whereby continuous, variable data can be assimilated and analyzed through the combination of an economic analysis model, which includes a direct costing capability, with a systems simulator. This tandem operation permits increased flexibility and greater atten¬tion to detail in the evaluation of mining systems. The direct costing process is carried throughout the majority of the model operations. Labor and capital costs may be computed directly, even in the absence of the systems simulator, while operating costs re¬quire input parameters, at present, from the subsystems of the Master Design Simulator. Since the costs computed are based on the perfor¬mance of each individual machine unit, the model may be used to evaluate equipment compatibility, system interaction at the mining face, and the effect of system elements on total mining costs. Additional applications of the cost model include the following: 1. Complete mining systems may be evaluated, over their economic life, to determine the feasibility of a profitable operation. 2. Costs associated with mining various segments of the coal deposit may be computed as a guide to planning the mine layout and scheduling the sequence of operations or acquisition of new

Condition-based maintenance (CBM) of industrial equipment is generally recognized as being the most cost-effective means for improving equipment availability. However, prerequisite to successful implementation of CBM is a reliable detector of failing components. One such detector, termed the effective negative-sequence impedance, had previously been identified as an indicator of induction motor stator winding degradation. However, a limitation of this detector is that it does not change in a predicable manner under certain motor operating conditions. This paper presents an experimental investigation of an improved technique for on-line detection of induction motor stator winding degradation. The paper begins with a brief description of the detectors, followed by a detailed description of the experimental setup, the experiments conducted, and results.

" Oil shale contains little or no oil as such , but it contains an organic material from which oil may be produced by destructive distillation" . This statement , or others conveying the same meaning, appears in many popular and techni cal articles on oil shale . It is based on the belief that the ordinary solvents of petroleum have but little action on the organic substances contained in oil- yielding shales , although on distillation these same shales may yield upwards of 50 gallons of crude shale oil per ton . A 50 - gallon shale thus yields by distillation 18.73 per cent of its weight as oil ( assuming the specific gravity of the oil to be 0.900 ) , although only a relatively small part of this can be recovered by extraction with such solvents as chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , and the like . In the course of certain experiments designed to determine the solubilities of different shales after they had begun to yield oil by distillation , it was found desirable to determine the quantity dissolved from certain unheated shales by various solvents , at or near the boiling points of these solvents . The method used and results obtained are presented below. These experiments were made in connection with the oil - shale investigations being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the States of Colorado and Utah .

[A survey of the literature relating to ignition temperatures of acetylene-air and acetylene-oxygen mixtures reveals rather wide disagreement in the reported results. In some instances the ignition temperatures of acetylene-air mixtures were reported to be lower then those of acetylene-oxygen mixtures, which is contrary to experience with other combustibles. To clear up some of the reported discrepancies, the authors have investigated the ignition temperatures of acetylene both in air and oxygen, and their results are presented in this report.]

Approximately 45% of U.S. coal is produced from underground mining. The use of diesel engines to power under- ground mining equipment has steadily increased over the past four decades in an effort to improve mine safety and productivity. Several advantages realized with the use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground coal mines are listed in Table I. The primary disadvantage of using diesel equipment in underground coal mines is that diesel exhaust emissions can contaminate mine ventilation air. The major constituents of diesel exhaust are gaseous emissions (which include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons) and diesel particulate matter (DPM). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has incorporated threshold limit values for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust into their regulations. These have been established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, has undertaken a study to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), hold up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the seventh phase of testing from May 1999 to August 2000. The SCSRs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. The results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their approved inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily. The deployed CSE SR-100s, however, exhibited significantly higher inhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) levels than new units, as they did in the previous two phases. Several Draeger OXY K-Pluses that rattled when shaken were found to have potassium superoxide (KO2) particles throughout the breathing circuit, including the mouthpiece. Draeger investigated the problem and developed a shake test to detect damaged units. The durations of new Ocenco M-20s were statistically significantly longer than those of deployed units, although only by 2 min.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.
