Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies for syn¬thetic Cu2S and CuS were measured. This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines goals to provide thermodynamic data essential to the more efficient processing of copper ores, and thereby minimize the current dislocations in energy, environment, and mineral supply. Heat capacities were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter from 5 to 310 K, and resulted in S°298 = 27.76 for Cu2S(c) and S°298 = 16.05 cal/deg mole for CuS(c). Low-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, -(G°-Ho°)/T, and H°-Ho°. Enthalpies were measured with a copper block calorimeter from 298.15 to 1,600 K for Cu2S(c,1) and 298.15 to 780 K for CuS(c). The thermal behavior of CuS showed no transitions or other significant anomalies for the low- or high-temperature investigations. Cu2S showed reversible transitions at 376 K with an isothermal heat absorption of 0.865 kcal/mole, 720 K with an isothermal absorption of 0.280 kcal/mole, and approximately 1,400 K (congruent melting point) with a heat of fusion of 3.070 kcal/mole. High-temperature data are tabulated for H°-H°298, Cp°, S°, and -(G°-H°298)/T. Enthalpies are also expressed in equation form. The low¬and high-temperature data were combined with data from the literature to cal¬culate and tabulate ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature.

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-element formulation for stress modeling in coal mines, the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems were modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and nonlinear seam materials can be used, and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geomechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process, a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems ahead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for selectively eluting mercury, silver, and gold from strong-base anion-exchange resins, including Rohm and Haas resins lRA-430 and 900 and Dow Chemical resins 2lK, SMA-I, and SBR. Resins were typically loaded to 145 oz/st of each metal. Loaded resins were eluted with H2S04, NaCl-H Cl, NaOCl, and NaCl04 solutions. The resins tested had similar elution characteristics for mercury and precious metals. The best selective elution scheme was achieved by eluting in a column with 2N H2S04 to recover 99 to 100 pct Hg, with 200 giL NaCl in IN HCI to rec;ver 99 to 100 pct Ag, and with 2M NaCl04 to recover 79 to 89 pct Au.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.

The mineral dressing research here reported is part of a continuing program by the Bureau of Mines to develop new or improved concentration processes for oxidized or partly oxidized lead and zinc ores. A sample of low-grade sulfide-oxide, lead-zinc ore from Jasper County, Mo., containing galena, cerussite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and sphalerite was concentrated by froth flotation and tabling to a grade of 66 percent lead. Because of the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead was limited to 64 percent at this grade. Tests to recover the zinc by froth flotation and by gravity concentration did not give satisfactory results. INTRODUCTION Since its establishment, the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center has con-ducted studies of base metals as a part of its overall program (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7).3/ This research has been, and is, directed to beneficiating complex and submarginal ores, to retreating rejects from commercial installations, and to developing fundamental data.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, the conditions required for the direct reconstruction of a tomogram from observed line integrals are examined. Because of the limited access to the working faces in coal mines, the special case of access to only two opposite faces is emphasized. Classical matrix methods were used for small dimensional (2 by 2, 3 by 3, and 4 by 4) applications to determine the limitations and the requirements for a solution. The results for large (n by n) grids were then inferred and generalized from those of the smaller grids and matrices. Limited access tomography is found to be appropriate for in-seam hazard detection from seismic and microwave data, but it is shown that additional data must be added to obtain a direct solution.

A new mining law for the Recublic of Polend was promulgated by presiden- tial decree dated November 29, 1930, published in the Journal of Lews (Dzienni stex) No. E, text 654, December E, 1530, and wes to become effective January 1, 1932, in all Polend except Silesie. Its adoption in Silesia wes dependent pon the action of the Silesian Diet. As the new law is considered an im- provement over the old Austrian Mining Lew, which is operative in the Silesian districts of Bielsk and Cieszyn, and the Prussian Kining Law, which is opera- tive in Upper Silesia, no delay in its adoption for Silesin was looked for. This new law codifies the various juridical regulations pertaining to ines existing in different parts of the Polish Republic but does not include legislation with respect to the extraction of minerel oil, especially crude oil. Petroleum legislation was postponed to a later date in order to facili- tate codification in other fields. Koreover, as the oil industry exists in Galicia elone, deley will not be detrimental.

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . The exingencies of a world war have brought home to the American public, especially the people of the. Eastern States, the urgent need for conserving fuel. Transportation problems in the East have created an unprecedented situation wherein fuel-oil supplies are greatly restricted, and the consequent increase in demand for coal further complicates the problem of transporting and storing that commodity. People should awaken to the need for utilizing every possibly means of conserving to fuel, even to the extent of reducing the temperature in their homes.

In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.

"This report is the second of a series dealing with electrical methods of underground communication nd signalling, and is a discussion of some of the factors involved in -applying radio in mines.A previous report2 described the results obtained by the use of the ""T.P.S."" of ground-conduction method of signalling, and outlined in a general way the requirements for a practical mine communication apparatus.The popularity of radio, the development work on new apparatus, a desire to render humanitarian service to entombed miners, and an endeavor to find new uses and applications for radio stimulated many persons to attempt the application of radio to mine rescue purposes. A number of experiments on underground reception from surface broadcast stations have been conducted by different experimenters in various parts of the country and the widespread interest in the subject is shown by the fact that these tests have been con¬ducted in many States, The Bureau of Mines has received information regarding, underground tests in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Michigan, Wyoming, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, and in England, Germany, Italy, and Franc.From occasional press notices and illustrations in different papers it may appear that radio communication in mines and in tunnels being excavated is en established fact, and that the method is comparatively simple. As a matter of fact the reverse is the case."

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future, To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation. The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to (1) determine from laboratory tests the feasibility of a photographic method for determining reflec-tances that may be applied to measuring in-mine mineral reflectances and (2) formulate a procedure for collecting and analyzing the data. The method uses a 35-mm camera with automatic flash and a gray-scale re-flectance standard to collect on film the reflectivity data in under-ground mineral mines. After the film is processed, the data on the photographic prints are analyzed in the laboratory with a photometer. Test results show the photographic method can provide values of reflec-tance to within ±5 pet of full scale (full scale = 100 pet). The method's usefulness for determining reflectivity values, within similar limits of absolute percent error at the lower end of the scale, however, has not been completely resolved by the study and consequently warrants further investigation. The method offers an acceptable means for collecting and analyzing reflectivity data for reflectivities at the higher end of the scale, i.e., 50 pet or above; it should be used with caution when reflectivity values are below 50 pet. Four films were evaluated; all gave relatively satisfactory results.

This Bureau of Mines publication summarizes the status of mine electrical equipment reliability research. Failure rate data were estimated from theoretical, laboratory, and field studies. Tables are presented listing reliability characteristics of molded-case circuit breakers, undervoltage relays, ground check monitors, cables, motors, and control circuitry. Application of failure rate data is shown in tables listing maintenance scheduling intervals of components and components that are most sensitive to the probability of hazardous voltages on power distribution systems in the mines. Complete, accurate, and appropriate failure rates on mine equipment are of the utmost importance for reliability evaluations.

A lightweight fiberglass feed leg for hand-held pneumatic percussion rock drills has been fabricated and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling of the rock drill apparatus, thereby reducing the potential for back injury to the driller and in- creasing drilling productivity. Current hand-held feed leg drills of the same class are 50 pct heavier than the Bureau-devised feed leg drill, which is comprised of a reduced-noise drill and the fiberglass feed leg. In-mine tests of the fiberglass leg showed that its performance and cost are comparable to those of standard aluminum feed legs.
