This case study provides an example of how social marketing was applied to meet the needs of business customers. Federal regulations require that all companies develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. The HazCom Writer, created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is a software tool designed to help companies prepare their required Hazard Communications (HazCom) written plan and list all hazardous chemicals at the company's worksite. The social marketing goal was to provide a product for small- to medium-sized companies to use for federal HazCom rule compliance. The HazCom Wm'ter is a direct NIOSH response to customer and stakeholder needs (including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the mining community, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration- regulated companies).

In a preliminary study of the beneficiation of iron ores conducted by the Bureau of Mines, one of the authors (T. T. Read) found it necessary to ascertain, if possible, how much effect a decrease in the silica content of an iron ore has upon the cost of making pig iron from the ore. In the beneficiation of iron ores the most important impurity to be removed is usually silica, and the amount that can be expended on a beneficiation process to reduce the silica content of the ore is obviously determined by the amount of increase in the value of the ore after beneficiation. The price that can actually be obtained for a beneficiated ore is, of course, a matter of negotiation between the seller and the buyer, but since the relative value of different grades of iron ore must be chiefly based upon the cost of making pig iron from them, an approximation as to the effect which decrease in the silica content of ore has upon the cost of snaking pig iron is an important guide in estimating what probable average gain will result from subjecting an ore to a beneficiation process. A search of the literature failed to reveal any detailed statement on this important topic, but fortunately the data are at hand to permit making an approximate calculation of the probable effect. A 1/2-ton experimental coke oven was installed ac the Bureau of Mines Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial slot-type ovens. Because of the small force exerted on the oven walls in most tests conducted to date (probably owing to the practice of charging coals and blends at a moisture content approximating that normal to commercial plants operating in this district), little information has been obtained about expansion properties. Two sole-heated ovens have therefore been constructed and used as supplementary equipment for determining the expansion properties of coals tested in the Tuscaloosa oven. The reasons for constructing the Tuscaloosa oven, the details of design, the operating, characteristics of the oven and the reproducibility of results have been discussed in previous publications. 3 4 5/ The present report deals with the effects of substituting various high- and low-volatile coals for components of a selected base blend carbonized under conditions similar to those normally used for producing foundry coke. Results of tests of 11 coals and 14 blends indicate that several blends tested rave cokes having physical properties very similar to those produced from the reference blend.

The magnetite deposits of the Big Ore Bank, in Lincoln County, N.C., were mined during the reconstruction period following the Civil War. The country rock at the Big Ore Bank property consists of micaceous schists and schistose quartzite with a few beds of dolomitic marble. Magnetite occurs with micaceous chlorite schist and is often so schistose that it is hard to distinguish from associated minerals. A magnetic survey by the North Carolina Geological Survey indicated several magnetic anomalies that appeared to justify exploration. The Bureau of Mines drilled 10 diamond-drill holes, totaling 4,493 linear feet, to delineate the deposits. More than 500 sludge samples and 119 core samples were collected for analysis. The project was begun in November 1943 and completed in April 1944.

The postwar demand for insulating material such as mineral wool, in-creased in proportion to the rapid construction of new buildings, placing an enormous burden on the existing mineral-wool industry both in known sources of raw materials and in available plant facilities. In view of the increased demand on the industry, the Bureau of Mines in its Mississippi Valley Experiment Station" Rolla, Mo., undertook an investigation to aid the industry by establishing resources of raw materials through actual laboratory wool-blowing tests and by developing certain methods for evaluating the physical proper-ties of a mineral wool. As material was received from the public, laboratory-evaluation technique had to be developed, the results of which would reflect in the mineral-wool-industry standards. The methods of testing used by the mineral-wool industry, not only would have required a pilot-plant installation capable of producing a large tonnage of mineral wool, but each wool-blowing campaign would have been very expensive and necessitated considerable personnel and equipment. The present laboratory wool-blowing equipment can produce as high as eight wool-blowing campaigns a day. The nature, simplicity, and size of the physical testing equipment permit testing as small a sample of wool as 25 grams and give information as reasonably accurate as in a 40-pound bag of wool. The purpose of this report is to describe the laboratory method of production and the evaluation of the physical properties of small quantities of mineral wool. Considerable work has already been done, and the interest of the public and industry is measured in the number of samples being submitted for testing.

The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. The presence of sulphur compounds in petroleum and its products is, generally speaking, undesirable, and the problems involved in removing such compounds are of great importance to the petroleum refiner and to the manufacturer of gasoline. There are several types of these compounds which are dissimilar in physical and chemical characteristics, as evidenced by different objectionable features which they exhibit, and special treatments have been developed to meet conditions existing in various products. This paper deals with the treatment of natural-gas gasoline for the removal of certain sulphur compounds which, if not removed, impart on objectionable odor and in addition badly discolor the product. The presence of this particular type of sulphur compounds is detected by the "doctor" test.* In some instances natural-gas gasoline is purchased on "doctor" test specifications, and the ordinary purchaser, while not buying on "doctor" specifications, is insistent in his demand for a water white product. Gasoline which fails to meet the "doctor" test, if not received by the buyer within a few weeks after time Of manufacture, may be "off color" enough to warrant a deduction from the market price.

High-temperature heat-content values of gallium and scandium sesquioxides were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. The results fill gaps in the thermodynamic information for these compounds; no previous similar data existed. The heat-content values were combined with heats and entropies of formation to obtain free energies of formation of gallium and scandium sesquioxides to 2,000° K. The thermodynamic stabilities of the sesquioxides of aluminum, gallium, scandim, and yttrium were compared.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

The Bureau of Mines, under an interagency agreement with the Department of Energy (DOE), investigated the feasibility of hardfacing the critical surfaces of valves and similar devices by chemical vapor deposition. The purpose of this research was to increase the wear resistance of these components for use in the abrasive and erosive environment of coal gasification units. Tungsten and molybdenum coatings were produced on nickel-plated carbon steels and stain-less steels by hydrogen reduction of the metal hexafluoride at 325° to 600° C. Titanium nitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of titanium tetrachloride, hydrogen, and nitrogen at 1,000° C. Titanium carbonitride coatings were produced on low-carbon steels by the reaction of nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane at 900° C. Tungsten, molybdenum and titanium nitride coatings were formed on 6-, 10-, and l2-inch (0.15-, 0.25-, and 0.30-meter) ball valve seats for evaluation in the low-Btu coal gasification pilot plant at the Morgantown Energy Research Center, Morgantown, W. Va.

Absolute viscosity values for gases usually are determined with a capillary tube viscosimeter, One of the correction factors applied to the experimental data is that for nonuniformity of the capillary bore. This report contains useful analytic expressions of the nonuniformity correction for the following cases: ellipse, cone, sine wave, sawtooth wave, square wave, and the general case. The methods herein described are applied to estimate the nonuniformity of a section of stainless steel capillary tubing to be used at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. Several other examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of the present results.

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

A gradual decrease in injection rates commonly occurs as a water-flooding project becomes older. This decrease can be attributed to changes in reservoir conditions, such as swelling of clay minerals, fillup, or gradual plugging of the sand face. However, a rapid decrease in the rate of injection indicates abnormal behavior and is cause for alarm. Extreme plugging conditions can completely stop injections into a formation. Such behavior in wells was the main concern of the tests described in this report. An accepted method of alleviating this condition is by backflowing input wells - closing the supply lines to the wells and allowing the reservoir pressure to force water back into the wellbore and to the surface. If backflowing is not successful, a string of smaller diameter pipe sometimes is run inside the casing, and the sand face is flushed with a waterspray. More drastic treatment is to inject acid into the wellbore to dissolve extraneous matter, or even part of the reservoir material, in an attempt to restore the permeability of the sand immediately around the wellbore. Any of these procedures can he coordinated with bailing and swabbing of the well for cleanout purposes.

The Hamme tungsten district is in Vance County, N. C., and Mecklenburg County, Va. Principal development has been in Vance County. The district is approximately 8 miles long by 1 mile wide and extends northeast-southwest. Its center is about 3 miles N. 65° W. of Townsville, N. C. The occurrence of tungsten in the district was first reported in 1901, but it was not until the Hamme brothers revived interest in the deposits in 1942 that commercial development began. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the war minerals program, began exploration and development of the district in June 1943 and completed it in December 1943. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the topography and geology and logging the drill cores. The program included mapping, trenching, sampling, diamond drilling, and analyses and beneficiation of ore samples, The principal ore mineral is hubnerite, which occurs in quartz veins within the schist and granite. The veins are generally lenticular along the strike and dip. About 50 quartz veins have been noted in the area, but many are barren or slightly mineralized.

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of small amounts of copper in tungsten metal powder using the principle of solvent extraction has been developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The metallic sample is dissolved in hydrogen peroxide, tartaric acid added, the pH adjusted, and the excess peroxide destroyed by boiling. Copper is reduced to the cuprous state, and the reagent neocuproine (2,9-dimethy1-1,10-phenanthroline) is added to form a colored complex with the copper. This colored complex is then extracted into chloroform and the absorbance of the separated chloroform layer measured on a spectrophotometer. Copper contents as low as 1 p.p.m. (parts per million) can be determined. The method is limited to finely divided tungsten powder. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in developing more sensitive methods for the determination of trace impurities in high-purity tungsten prompted an investigation of the possibility of using solvent extraction-colorimetric methods. The organic reagents now commercially available make possible many extremely sensitive colorimetric methods for the determination of metallic ions. Extraction of the colored complex into a small volume of organic phase can be used to further increase sensitivity (4) .4/ This general approach has the added advantage that no special equipment beyond that normally found in an analytical laboratory is required.

Heat capacity measurements were made on sodium bromide ( NaBr ) and sodium iodide ( NaI) in the temperature ranges of 7 ° to 300 ° K and 56 ° to 300 ° K using an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy , enthalpy function , and free- energy function were calculated from the heat capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. Entropy and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K also were calculated for the two compounds using entropy values determined in this study and other data reported in the literature . The entropy values calculated at 298.15 ° K were 20.75 ± 0.06 entropy units (eu ) for sodium bromide and 23.55 ± 0.07 eu for sodium iodide .

"I. INTRODUCTION(SILICA, THE LUNG, INFLAMMATION, AND FIBROSIS)Inhalation of respirable-size silica (0. I to 5 µm in diameter) deposits the particles in the deep spaces of the Jung where oxygen is exchanged. The resulting pattern of inflammation is substantially different compared to that observed from other inhaled substances such as carbon, polystyrene titanium dioxide etc. 1 Following the inflammatory reaction the body attempts to isolate the damage by walling off the area via fibrosis. 2 The unique nature of the inflammatory response to silica makes it logical to infer that fibrosis is a later-stage manifestation of the initial inflammatory damage. In addition to the inflammation extensive lysis and cellular death particularly to macrophages and neutrophils, can occur, depending on the dose of silica.' The ingestion of significant amounts of silica by macrophages and neutrophils produces an inflammatory sequence which activates the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism and produces platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotrienes (LT).4·5II. CALCIUM IONOPHORE MIMICS SILICA TOXICITY IN VITROPhagocytic cells exposed to silica in vitro produce PAF and LT. This response is reminiscent of phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore (A23 l 87) in the presence of ionic calcium.6-8 A23 l 87 forms a complex with free ionic calcium which passes through cellular membranes, thus transporting calcium inside the cell. The increased intracellular calcium concentration triggers the production of small amounts of prostaglandins large amounts of LT. PAF and. depending on dose cellular death (see Figure 1 ). Could silica cause LT production and cellular death by a similar mechanism? How could silica - an inert solid - act in a similar fashion as a soluble stimulant? Clearly the negative SiO2 and OH- surface of silica can bind calcium ions9 and therefore could theoretically act as a solid-state ionophore releasing bound calcium inside of cells following phagocytosis."
