Volatilization of cesium from pollucite ore was investigated as an initial step in the production of purified cesium metal or cesium salts. High recovery of cesium and rubidium as chloride sublimates was accomplished by 2-hour roasts in a tube furnace using charges containing 1 part ore, 2 parts limestone, and 0.23 part calcium chloride. Recoveries of cesium in the sublimate product were 89.1, 92.9, and 95.2 pct, respectively, using 1,100° C and vacuum, 1,250° C with an air sweep, and 1,250° C without an air sweep. Most of the lithium, sodium, and potassium sublimed with the cesium and rubidium, but virtually none of the calcium, aluminum, and silicon in the charges was volatilized.

The Bureau of Mines used an electrolytic tank model to investigate the response of guard electrodes of different dimensions under different simulated reservoir conditions. Sandstone disks from the Berea and Connellsville Formations were used as resistive beds in the model, and agar gel or water was used as conductive beds. In the experiments, bed thickness, hole diameter, mud resistivity, and bed resistivity were varied. The guard electrode is an excellent tool for determining true bed resistivity in the thin-bedded oil reservoirs of the Appalachian area. Vertical resolution and resistivity values are good when there is little or no invasion. Resistivity values are near true bed resistivity in beds thicker than about six hole diameters when the electrode-to-hole-diameter ratio is close to 1. However, low-resistivity muds cause false peaks to appear on the logs near bed boundaries in thick beds, and for resistive beds having a thickness approximately three to five times the hole diameter, apparent resistivities tend to be excessively high when mud resistivity is low.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. Available Technology Over the past few years, the number and types of systems available for monitoring the blind areas around heavy equipment have increased. "The testing of explosives for permissibility for use in coal mines was begun by the technologic branch of the United States Geologic Survey in February, 1909, and continued by the United States Bureau of Mines from July, 1910; this testing has been carried on from year to year as the explosives were submitted by manufacturers. As a result of these many years of testing for permissibility a large amount of data has accumulated regarding the characteristics of permissible explosives. The manufacturer expects a sample of explosive submitted for test to meet the requirements for permissibility, otherwise the sample would not be submitted. However, in spite of the careful regulation and preparation of the formulas a certain percentage of explosives fails to pass the gallery tests. It is therefore interesting to note the proportion of failures at the gallery for a given composition of explosive. The fact should be emphasized that this discussion deals with all explosives submitted for test, both those which passed the tests and those which failed to pass. Explosives that failed to pass the tests were never designated as permissible explosives and have never appeared on any list of explosives permissible for use in coal mines.The Bureau of Mines classifies permissible explosives in two ways, according to the quantity of poisonous gases produced and according to the characteristic ingredient of the explosive.4 In this paper only two types of the latter classification are considered, as follows:"

This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

This paper reports experimental determinations by the Bureau of Mines of compressibility factors to 4,000 pounds per square inch absolute (p.s.i.a.) for helium at temperatures from -10° to 130° F. and for 16 helium-nitrogen mixtures at 70° F. This information is needed for computing accurate discharge volumes and is necessary for determining an average-density value for use in orifice-meter formulas. In thermodynamic calculations, several functions of the compressibility factor with pressure and temperature are required. The data in the original publications (6, 8)5 of this study have been reexamined and have been given a more comprehensive treatment. The recalculated compressibility factors are higher by approximately 0.2 percent because in the earlier work a linear relationship between the compressibility factor of helium and pressure was assumed.

Correct ventilation of underground workings whether in coal or in metal mines consists in establishing such control of air currents that the miners may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; also in controlling the air flow so that the mine workings may at ordinary times be kept reasonably free of harmful gases or dusts, and so that in time of emergency, as when a fire or an explosion occurs, there may with minimum delay be maintained as much or as little air flow as is desired throughout the mine in its entirety or in certain parts of the mine. Control of air flow is the essential point of any mine ventilating system, and is obtained only by the installation of mechanically operated fans, and other ventilating devices such as doors; overcasts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. Much has been written about natural ventilation, and many claims have been made that in specific mines or parts of mines there is sufficient natural air flow. As a matter of fact, there are actually very few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation creates atmospheres anything like adequately safe or healthful for underground workers even at ordinary times or under ordinary. conditions; and at the time of a fire or an explosion mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and are decidedly dangerous for the unfortunates forced to be in them either at the time of the disaster or afterwards when trying to handle conditions arising from the emergency.

The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines developed induction slag melting process is of concern to members of the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of CaF2 inclusions on the properties of titanium and its survival rate during melting. The data were obtained from single induction-slag-melted ingots prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct and also with 2- and 1-pct additions of CaF2 slag. The results of this effort showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H, but these materials are much more notch sensitive in fatigue than normal Ti-6A1-4V alloy titanium. First and second vacuum-arc remelts of single-induction-slag-melted ingots fragmented and increased the number of inclusions, while reductions in the amount of flux resulted in an upward trend in the spatial distance between pores in an x-y plane.

This paper describes the mining methods and operating costs for 1938 at the South Burns shaft, situated in the Cripple Creek district, Colorado. The shaft is operated by Golden Conqueror Mines, Inc., through which portions of the properties of the Acacia Cold Mining Co., The Free Coinage Gold Mining Co., and The United Gold Mines Co. are worked under lease. During 1938, 30,773.61 dry tons of ore averaging $9.59 in gold per ton was mined. Of this, 10,138.439 tons averaging $10.65 per ton was produced on company account, and 20,635.171 tons averaging $9.05 per ton was produced by "split-check" lessees.

In about 1930, Degussa applied for a patent on a process for the of oxides, carbides, sulfides, and other nonmetallic impurities by filtration in the molter state. The filtering media listed were wire screen, coke, and ceramic materials, and quartz. It was also suggested that filtration might be combined with chemical reaction between the metal and the filter medium or that might be added to the system. No patent was granted on the general scheme, but several years later a patent was granted on a continuous process purification of crude light metals, especially or alkali earth and their alloys. The melt was stirred at 1 temperature at which the impurities (such as oxides and salts) remained solid and the metal was drawn through a filter tube. The impurities collected under the filter and were removed by a screw conveyor. Crude sodium was purified by this process in Degussa's Knapsack plant. During the last war, when the refining of scrap became a very urgent Problem in Germany, experimental investigations were extended to separation of other metals and metallic compounds by filtration. Preliminary experiments seemed to confirm the opinion of Dr. L. Weiss that the principles of wet chemical filtration might be applied to a great extent in the purification of metal and alloys.

The Bureau of Mines compared the effects of surface-active chemicals with those of pure water on core-drilling rock and quartz and on fracturing quartz. The objectives were to determine if these chemicals assist drilling and fracturing rock and if zeta potential control was worth pursuing as an aid to full-scale drilling. All tests were performed in the laboratory. No significant increases in drilling rates were observed for 1 to 10,000 ppm Al (as AlC13) in flushing water when drilling microcline or serpentine, nor for 1 to 10,000 ppm Mg (as MgC12) when drilling microcline or marble. Concentrations near those giving a zero zeta potential were used with microcline and marble. A 50-pct rate increase was observed for drilling quartz in 0.7 ppm oleylammonium acetate, which gave a zero zeta potential. No other concentrations were used. No effect on the tensile strength of quartz thread in 0.05 ppm Al (as AlC13), which gave a zero zeta potential, was observed. Heptanol, reported to give a zero zeta potential on quartz, did not reduce the bending strength of small quartz bars below that in water. These generally negative findings raise doubt about the usefulness of zeta potential control in full-scale drilling. The results, combined with previous studies, suggest that controlling physical properties of drilling fluids, such as viscosity, is more useful than altering chemical properties.

The extensive use of pulverized coal for fuel in industrial plants has brought to the front again a question that heretofore has been considered only a mining problem, namely, " Can coal dust be ignited by an electric arc ? " If it can be so imited, the next logical query is , "under what conditions can such ignition occur ? " In view of the new problems relating to pulverized coal installations , and because of occasional mine disasters attributed to ignition of coal dust by electric arcs , it seems advisable to review the work done by Thornton and Bowden with electric flashes in coal dust , and to report two preliminary investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines .

Compressed- air blowers are frequently used both in large and small metal ines , not only as an aid to ventilation , but in some mines as a substitute for an dequate ventilation system . As a temporary fixture , blowers have their uses , but hey should never be used in lieu of a permanent ventilation system. A number Probably the most common error made in placing dependence on compressed- air lowers as an aid to underground ventilation is the tendency to over- rate their cooling efficiency . It is a very common but natural error to assume that compressed air which issues freely from a blower is of the same temperature as the compressed air which issues freely from the exhaust port of a rock-drilling machine . of readings were taken in different mines of the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust , of the compressed air flowing from the blowers , and of the surrounding air In both cases . In general , the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust was from 10 to 30 degrees below that of the surrounding air , in many instances being slightly below freezing , 32° F . The average temperature for a number of compressed-air lowers and for the mine air surrounding them is shown in Table I.

Recovery and separation of molybdenum and rhenium from a process solution was accomplished by a technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines involving a combined solvent extraction and activated carbon adsorption procedure. The processing sequence required treatment of the solution with S02 to reduce the chlorate ion and adjust the pR prior to solvent extraction of molybdenum and rhenium with a tertiary amine. Molybdenum and rhenium were stripped from the organic phase with an NH40H solution, and the strip solution was then passed through activated carbon to preferentially adsorb the rhenium. After washing entrained molybdenum from the column with a brine solution, rhenium was eluted with an MeOH-H20 mixture. The activated carbon was regenerated with water. Molybdenum was recovered as (NH4)6Mo7024 by evaporating the column effluent. Rhenium in the column eluate was reextracted with a tertiary amine, stripped from the organic phase with dilute NH40H, and recovered as NH4Re04 by evaporating the strip solution. The final (NR4)Re04 product contained < 80 ppm impurities. Sodium sulfate was crystallized from the first solvent-extraction raffinate by lowering the solution temperature to 0° C. Precious metals contained in the original process solution were adsorbed onto the activated carbon.

During the course of the work: it was found desirable to investigate the sensitizing action of nitrostarch in mixtures of ammonium nitrate containing low percentages of this material. Data were derived as to the sensitivity to decomposition by heat and the completeness of detonation and,of detonation of straight ammonium nitrate, as compared with ammonium nitrate-nitrostrarch mixtures containing 1 to 10 per cent of nitrostarch.The ammonium nitrate was a sample of coated material obtained from the salvage of amatol shells. "Crude oils are capable of dissolving quantities of gas under pressure. This fact has been known for some time, but questions have arisen as to the effects of gas in solution upon the characteristics of the oil. Previous investigations4 show that gas in solution in an oil affects the viscosity and surface tension of the oil, but the effects on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil have not been known. The results given in this report show that there is a decided change both in volume and in the A. P. I. gravity of the oil due to the solution of the gas in the oil under pressure. As gas is dissolved, the volume of the oil and the A. P. I. gravity increase. The converse of this phenomenon is also true: if the gas is released from a saturated oil, there is a shrinkage in volume and a decrease in A.P.I. gravity due to the release of gas from solution. However, various oils show marked tendencies to retain a portion of the dissolved gas upon releasing the pressure to that of the atmosphere. This retained gas has an appreciable effect on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil because the oil does not resume its initial volume or gravity while it retains dissolved gas. In a sense the oil has been ""freshened"" and will not return to its original or weathered volume until it loses some of the lighter fractions. Wiggins5 has shown that a fresh oil decreases both in volume and in gravity because of the weathering of the lighter fractions while the oil is standing in storage tanks.This paper includes data attained during the determination of volume and gravity correction factors to be applied in the oil recovery investigations of the Bureau of Mines. Three oils having a wide range in gravity were used in determining the correction factors. These oils were from the Bartlesville-Dewey field, Oklahoma, the Seminole field, Oklahoma, and the Inglewood field, California. The same gas that was used in the oil recovery experiments was used throughout this investigation. Determinations were made of the volume and A.P.I. gravity increases resulting from the gas going into solution at 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 pounds pressure; also the increases in the volume and gravity of the oil due to retained gas were determined after the dissolved gas was liberated from solution by releasing the pressure to that of the atmosphere.Samples of residual and liberated gas were taken throughout the investigation in order to study the selective absorption and selective retention by the oil of the various constituents of the gas. The analyses of these gas samples showed that there was selective absorption and selective retention of the constituents of the gas. The tests on Inglewood crude gave the most pronounced example of selective absorption and selective retention of the gas.All of the tests were conducted at a constant temperature of 709F."

Four applications of radiotracer techniques in metallurgical research are described: (1) In electrowinning tungsten from scheelite, molybdenum 99 was used to detemine the molybdenum concentration of the fused alkali-phosphate bath and the electrowon tungsten; (2) an attempt to detemine the solubility of tagged ceric oxide in molten CeF3-BaF2-LiF was unsuccessful, but a high rate of cerium ion exchange was observed; (3) iron 59 was added to cerium during casting and used to follow the migration of iron during solid state electrolysis; (4) radiotracers were used in developing special analytical techniques applicable to high-purity rare-earth metals produced by molten salt electrolysis.
