The New Almaden mine was discovered in 1824, and since that date production of quicksilver has exceeded 1,000,000 flasks. Because of this high production record, the New Almaden area was, upon passage. by Congress of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, immediately considered by the Bureau of Mines as a promising location for exploration. In 1941, the Federal Geological Survey undertook a survey of the entire district. R. R. Trengove, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary study for a project in 1942, and in August 1943 the Bureau, in close cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, began the development project described herein. The Bureau of Mines drilled 36 holes, totaling 6,807 feet of diamond drilling, along the contact between the serpentine and Franciscan, sandstones and other sedimentary formations. The ore bodies are found along this contact and occur in the carbonate-silica rock. This report briefly describes the location, history, and ore deposits of the property. The recent operations are outlined, and the work performed by the Bureau is explained in detail.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

Past experience has shown that the penetration characteristics of the 10-mm nylon cyclone used on approved personal sampling equipment are significantly different from those determined in the laboratory using a nonpulsating flow source. The Bureau of Mines has developed and recommended a modification to presently approved equipment that will alleviate this difference. However, as a result of this modification, a new relationship for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal sampling equipment to equivalent concentrations as measured with an MRE instrument will have to be established. This Bureau of Mines report describes the underground sampling program conducted to establish a new factor for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with personal sampling equipment, modified with a recommended pulsation damping device, to an equivalent concentration as measured with an MRE gravimetric dust sampler.

This research was conducted with the objective of suppressing the respirable dust in coal mines by foam application. A formulation was developed for making a water-based, high-expansion, and limited stability foam. A horizontal boring machine was used as a laboratory coal mining model for generating coal dust. A modified laboratory foam generator was built. Foam was applied directly to the point at which dust was being formed by the cutter of the boring machine working against a block of coal. Coal dust was sampled with an impinger and analyzed for the particle count and particle size distribution. Coal dust suppression test results on freshly generated dust have demonstrated very clearly that in laboratory scale experiments over 90% of the respirable coal dust can be suppressed by foam. These tests were run when initial coal du t concentrations were 10 and 70 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf).

The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim arc to varying-degrees just beginning to achieve significant economic and industrial development. These countries are richly endowed with certain mineral resources, and development of these resources is being accelerated. In 1965, the mineral industry remained a relatively small sector of the region's economy, accounting for only about 1 percent of its estimated gross national product of $62,528 million. Nevertheless, the estimated $630 million total value of minerals produced in South Asia during 1965 represented an increase of nearly 15 percent t over that of 1964. India continued as the dominant mineral producer of the region, accounting for 85 percent of the total value of all minerals produced ill 1965. India increased its output of iron ore, manganese, mica, coal, and petroleum. Pakistan accounted for 13 percent of the value of the region's output and recorded increased output of iron ore, chromite, coal, natural gas, and most other minerals. The small mineral industry of Ceylon attained remarkable growth in the production of ilmenite, graphite, and gem stones. The mineral industry of Afghanistan remained relatively insignificant, although development of large known resources of natural gas was continued, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim produced no commercially significant quantities of minerals in 1965.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Some mines after passing through the prospecting stage and becoming sizable enterprises still adhere to the development program of the prospect, extending their workings without definite plans. In mining operations where definite structural conditions do not exist, a prearranged layout of mine development is not feasible; but where exploration and preliminary development have indicated the extent and probable limits within which the ore is expected, careful planning of development will result in a lowering of mining costs and a consequent increase is profits. A lack of definite plane for laying out mine workings is one of the contributory factors to unnecessarily high costs. Although this paper deals primarily with the influence of level spacing on mining costs, still other phases of mine development, such as the proper spacing of ore chutes and raises, can be analyzed on a cost basis in a similar manner, as shown herein. LEVEL SPACING The problem of establishing a new level or levels in order to exploit steeply dioping ore deposits and prospect the ground at depth recurs at intervals during the active life of mines. Driving levels is largely "dead work" and therefore costly. By the judicious selection of the proper level interval after balancing the opposing factors involved in the problem, a considerable saving in mining costs can be effected. Although much has been written in regard to the various methods employed in ore extraction, mining literature is still incomplete in regard to the factors-influencing level spacing at various mines. Level spacing involves procedures not lending themselves readily to description, and, moreover, it is a phase of mining operations that is apt to escape criticism, because only those in close contact with the operations are equipped with the necessary familiarity with the conditions to pass judgment.

This report presents results of mining operations and of research and development work done during stage I of the gas combustion retorting research program conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation and six major oil companies at the Bureau of Mines Anvil Points Oil Shale Facilities. A brief description of the gas combustion process is given and the experimental program is discussed. Included in this discussion are (1) air-gas distributor development, (2) results of gas and shale distribution studies, and (3) effects of other process variable studies. The report concludes with a statistical evaluation of experimental results. Two appendixes present a chronological account of the experimental work and tabulations of data for all retorting runs conducted during stage I.

This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the refractory properties of 42-, 58-, and 70-pct-A1203 brick. Brick having porosities ranging from 12 to 16 pct were impregnated with solutions containing chrome, chrome-iron, zirconium, calcium, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, tin, and manganese ions. Additions of some of these ions provided dramatic improvements to such properties as hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and particularly slag resistance. These improvements can be related to reduction of porosity, amorphous grain boundary phases, formation of more refractory bond phases, and reduction of the wettability of Al203-containing refractories by metallurgical slags. Fifty-eight-percent-AI203 brick, impregnated with chrome, showed hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and slag resistance two to five times better than those of untreated 70-pct-AI203 brick. This could result in reducing the Nation's dependence on imported refractory-grade bauxite generally required for high-A1203 brick, as domestic alumina resouces could be used to produce the improved refractories.

The Shasta and California Iron-ore deposits are 14 miles northeast of Redding, Shasta County, Calif.; and since 1907 have produced more than 300,000 short tons of exceptionally pure iron ore. Although some ore was mined and smelted from 1907 through the First. World War, most of it has been produced from 1942 through 1945 for use in making heavy ship ballast and concrete anchorages for mines. Irregular masses of magnetite, ranging from lumps of a few tons to pods containing about 25,000 tons, occur associated with skarn near the contact between the McCloud limestone and a younger granitic intrusive. Some of the deposits are low-grade, whereas others are nearly pure magnetite. Selective mining and hand sorting are necessary to produce a high-grade product. Investigation of these deposits by the Bureau of Mines included 2,910 feet of diamond drilling, some surface sampling of the principal mineralized zone and beneficiation tests. Resulting factual data are given in the body of this report.

This report stems from a study by the Bureau of Mines of the possibility of reducing coal filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat directly to the filter cake while under vacuum during the drying phase of the filter cycle. One disk of a 4-foot-diameter vacuum filter was equipped with gas-fired radiant-heat generators and the effect of radiant heating on the moisture content of a variety of filter cakes was studied. The results of this investigation show that this process can best be described as a filter aid capable of increasing the effectiveness of conventional filtration approximately 6 percentage points of moisture. The operating cost of removing water by this method is somewhat lower than the average operating cost of thermal drying and is considerably cheaper when the total cost is considered. Removal of water from coal that has been wet-cleaned is an important part of the overall coal preparation process. Water is a contaminant, and it is foolish to wash coal to reduce its ash content and add inert water in the process. In some instances the removal of water is actually more important than the removal of ash-forming minerals; its weight adds to the cost of transportation, and its evaporation during burning or carbonizing absorbs useful heat. Fine coal that contains more than about 10 percent moisture is notoriously difficult to handle. A problem thus exists for which there are sound practical and economic reasons to seek a solution.

The colony of French Guiana ( or Cayenne ) is administered by a governor , assisted by a privy council of five members . A council - general of 16 members is elected by French citizens resident in Guiana, and the colony is represented 3 in the French parliament by one deputy . The area is about 34,740 square miles . French Guiana is the largest gold producer of the French colonies , producing nearly $ 1,000,000 worth annually . Considerable prospecting has been done on the bauxite deposits , which are extensive . Copper , iron , lead , and 4 mercury deposits are also reported . In 1931 , 10,000 prospectors for gold were reported as working . The French Government is taking an active interest and has sent a committee of mining experts to explore the region ; no permits are to be issued to individual prospectors while the committee is in the colony . Plans for development of mining industry include consideration of 4,500 convicts and 2,500 natives already in the colony and available for labor .

With the current renewed interest in advancing the technology for producing alumina from domestic raw materials, revisions of previous cost estimates to provide planning data are urgently needed. Completely new cost estimates on a 1973 basis are included for four alumina-from-clay processes and one alumina-from-anorthosite process. These estimates are based on new or previously calculated material balances, recalculated heat requirements, and new equipment designs. The use of larger and more modern equipment has permitted a significant reduction in labor requirements as well as equipment costs. Chemical prices, labor rates, and utility rates typical of late 1973 are used in these cost estimates. In addition to the revised cost estimates, all 21 previously published alumina evaluations compiled by the Bureau of Mines were updated to show the effect of inflation using an inflation index and late 1973 chemical prices, labor rates, and utility rates.

Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.

"INTRODUCTION It is a recognized fact that in the coal-mining industry coal dust must be allayed to promote the safety and health of underground workers. The Bureau of Mines has been cognizant of the hazards of coal dust for many years, and the necessity of controlling such dust was acknowledged when the Federal Mine Safety Code was formulated. Accumulations of coal dust increase the explosion hazard in a bituminous-coal mine and facilitate the propagation of an explosion. Some of the coal dust produced in mining is inhaled by the workers and contributes to respiratory infection. Impairment of vision and personal discomfort resulting from working in dense clouds of coal dust reflect unfavorably on the efficiency of workmen. Considerable coal dust, originating at the working face, is carried in the ventilating current and deposited elsewhere in the mine, thereby increasing the explosion hazard. It is apparent, therefore, that if coal dust could be allayed effectively at its points of origin, the dust-explosion hazard in bituminous-coal mines would be reduced greatly.Although dust control is practiced in many bituminous-coal and lignite mines, the extent and effectiveness of control for the, entire industry-is not generally known. The purpose of this circular is to present such information clearly, and to encourage coal-mine operators to install dust- allaying equipment.Factual data on dust-allaying practices at working faces in a large number of the bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States were .compiled from reports on recent Federal inspections of these mines, The information is presented in tabular form to permit review of the dust-allaying practices of a substantial part of the industry, by States, and also according to employment, and loading practice."

This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . This paper describes the Bureau of Mines development of a novel subsidence prediction methodology suitable to the mining and geologic conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. It describes the computation of vertical and horizontal movements, inclination, curvature, and horizontal strains. The substance of this method is the separation of the effects of lithology by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithologic conditions, while providing for different mining conditions, i.e., underground geometry and overburden thickness. The effects of lithology have been expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient within the subsidence trough. The subsidence co-efficient is considered a constant for other predictive methods. Field data from 16 test sites at 11 Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the analysis. For each panel, the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on their locations relative to the edges of their respective panels yielded a third-degree polynomial equation. The results from additional longwall panel studies, not included in the regression analysis, were used to prove the validity of this method. To facilitate the use of this precalculatlon methodology, a computer program was written in BASIC for use on a personal computer.

This publication provides an historical overview of research undertaken by the U.S. federal government over the last 100 years to improve the health and safety of our nation?s miners. Federal research efforts began with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM, or the Bureau) in 1910. They have continued over the past century, even after the Bureau?s closure in 1996. It is hoped that this publication will give the reader an appreciation for the work of mining health and safety researchers over the past century, and of the miners served by this research. Although not a comprehensive history, this report highlights the key organizational changes made within the Bureau and the federal government that affected mining safety and health research. Some mention is also made of Bureau research not directly related to mining health and safety. Note that the work classified as safety and health research has varied over the last century. For example, before 1970 the Bureau separated mining research and safety and health research. At that time, mining research included ground control and methane drainage because they had direct implications for mine safety. Explosives research was also reported separately from health and safety, even though permissible explosives research was obviously related to safety. Therefore, where budget figures from the Bureau are mentioned in this report, it is often not possible to separate safety and health research from other types of research. This history is generally chronological, with a few exceptions. Because of their prominence and direct links to Bureau research, most of the Public Health Service mining studies completed before 1970, when NIOSH was established, will be discussed in a single section, even though the work spanned many decades. Likewise, for convenience, the brief histories of the Bureau?s mining research centers are located in one section.
