"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. A field test was designed to inject a specially formulated two compound epoxy resin into the roof rock ahead of a working face to cement fractures and formation interfaces at the Westmoreland Coal Co., Winding Gulf Div., Eccles No. 5 Mine, Eccles, West Virginia. Five 30 foot long X 2 inch diameter, hold were drilled at an angle of 15° above the plane of roof line front the face of a working entry. The epoxy resin compounds were pumped through a proportioning unit and mixed in-line before being discharged into the drill hole under treatment it injection pressures up to a maximum of 450 psig. When the coal face was advanced an anomalous failure of the roof rock occurred in the treated section. Further testing was suspended until the cause of the failure could he determined. The polymers were tested, under confined conditions, in 2 inch pipe columns. Extreme temperature and pressure (up to 2400 psig) rises were recorded as they cured, It was concluded that this pressure source fractured the rock and caused the roof failure. The entire program was terminated after it was determined that the heat rise and resultant high pressures could not he controlled chemically or mechanically.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The report gives results of analyses in oil-company laboratories of samples of gasoline obtained from service-station pumps in 18 marketing areas by representatives of oil companies. These companies obtained the samples and analyzed them for their own information and supplied data from their laboratory reports to the Bureau of Mines for compilation and publication. This manual of practice is to be used in combination with the final reports for the study of spoil stability in the Eastern Coal Province. The manual applies the predictive matrices developed in the parent study for use in evaluating the stability of typical mine spoil slopes. The values of internal friction and pore pressure coefficient are derived for many varied slope conditions. The results can be used in conventional stability analysis equations to assist the mine operator or regulatory personnel in evaluating spoil stability from very limited information.

THE carbonizing properties of one medium- and and five low-volatile coals from West Virginia and one high-volatile A and two medium-volatile coals from Pennsylvania were determined by 800° and 900° C. BM-AGA carbonization tests and expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties of the coals and the yields and quality of their cokes and other carbonization products were determined. The low-volatile coals comprised a mine and a coke-plant sample of Pocahontas No. 6-bed coal from the. Black Eagle No. 1 mine, Wyoming County, W. Va.; a mine sample of Pocahontas No. 6 bed from the Louisville mine, Mercer County, W. Va. ; Davy Sewell bed was sampled at the Twin Branch mine, McDowell County, W. Va.; and Fire Creek bed was sampled at the Dunedin No. 1 mine, Raleigh County, W. Va. The medium-volatile coals were from the Fire Creek bed, Laurel Creek mine, Greenbrier County, W. Va.; Lower Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 4 mine, Cambria County, Pa.; and Upper Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 6 mine, Clearfield County, Pa. The high-volatile A coal represented the Upper and Lower Freeport beds, Kent Nos. 1 and 2 mines, Indiana County, Pa. In addition to the coals listed, high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa., a standard blending coal, was used in blends in this investigation.

A retort was constructed in which fine particles of shale, entrained in steam or other gaseous media, could be retorted at controlled temperatures and residence times and the effects of retorting variables upon quality and quantity of products could be determined. Studies of the effects of temperature upon products obtained from Green River (Piceance Creek Basin, Colo.) and Chattanooga (Tenn.) oil shales were completed. The feasibility of using the retort to process a shale of extremely high moisture content from Brazil also was investigated. Air was used as the entraining medium in a series of studies in which combustion of some of the products of retorting within the retort tube supplied a major portion of the process heat. In another series, shale oil from a conventional retort was cracked thermally to obtain data for comparison with results of retorting en-trained shale. In still another series the effects of rates of steam flow and solids feed upon rates of heat transfer from the furnace to the process stream were studied. Crushed quartz rather than oil shale was charged to the retort in this series. A study was begun in which raw shale was partly retorted, the products separated, and the partially retorted shale recharged to the retort. The shale was to have been recycled until it was completely retorted in an effort to improve oil yield by recycle retorting; however, the project was terminated before the investigation was completed.

Most of the underground coal in the United States is mined via room-and-pillar mining methods with continuous miners. These machines operate intermittently because they have to wait for shuttle cars to interchange positions. To overcome this discontinuity in shuttle car haulage and to realize the full production potential of continuous miners, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) system through a research contract with Jeffrey Mining Machinery Div. (JMMD). The MUCH system consists of 12 rubber-tired vehicles and a bridge conveyor. The rubber-tired vehicles are connected by a unique mechanical linkage system to form a 250-ft train. The mechanical linkage permits the vehicles to track-retrack the preceding vehicle in both inby and outby directions. The cut coal cascades from one vehicle to another until it is discharged on the section conveyor belt. The MUCH system provides continuous haulage to the continuous miner. The MUCH system was initially surface tested by JMMD. Subsequent extensive testing was conducted by the Bureau at its test facilities at Bruceton, P A. Deficiencies found during testing were corrected. This report summarizes initial tests by JMMD and subsequent extensive tests and evaluation by the Bureau.

Mercury deposits were discovered in 1941 in the sedimentary rocks of the Cinnabar Crook area, near the head of the Holitna River drainage in southwestern Alaska, by Russell Schaefer and Harvey Wincholl of Sloitmut, Alaska. High-grade float was found in both Canary Gulch and Cinnabar Gulch, and indications of other deposits wore found in Aldor and Broken Shovel Gulches. Schaefer and Winchell's exploration in 1942 and 1943 revealed placer deposits of cinnabar along Canary Gulch. During prospecting on Canary Gulch, 3,600 pounds of ore was recovered from the detrital material on the Lucky Day lode at the head of the gulch. When retorted, this ore was reported by the owners to have produced 26 flacks of quicksilver. During the summer of 1943, Wallace M. Cady and Charles A. Hickcox, of the U. S. Geological Survey, spent 4 weeks mapping and investigating the area. Bruce I. Thomas and Harold C. Pierce, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, examined and sampled several deposits in September 1943. Following their preliminary examination, in view of the exceptionally high-grade cinnabar present, additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. A program of trenching, test pitting, and sampling to delimit the deposits was completed during the summer of 1947 under the direction of the author.

IN INDUSTRIAL and domestic daily life carbon monoxide is the most frequently encountered toxic gas. hazardous concentrations of carbon monoxide may be present in the vicinity of many industrial operations, such as metallurgical processes, coke ovens, and fuel- and synthesis-gas producers, and may be encountered in confined spaces, such as dwellings, garages, workshops, vehicular tunnels, and mining operations, in connection with the use of heaters, boilers, internal-combustion engines, after blasting operations, and after fires and explosions. Evaluation and control of the health and safety hazard caused by carbon monoxide depend primarily on the analytical detection of the presence of carbon monoxide and determination of its concentration in air and in various gaseous mixtures. The choice of method of analysis in any particular situation depends on such factors as required accuracy, range of concentration involved, convenience, speed of analysis required, quantity of sample available, qualitative composition of sample or atmosphere to be analyzed, and possible effects of interfering gases. Some of the methods described require only adequate understanding of operational techniques, whereas others require thorough appreciation and skill in applying the principles involved. The instruments and analytical procedures commonly used for detecting and determining carbon monoxide are described in detail, and reference is made to more specialized methods:

"During recent months much criticism as to the efficiency of mine labor has been heard from various, sections of the country. No doubt much of this criticism has been well founded. The present lack of efficiency and of stability is due primarily to a spirit of restlessness and partial irresponsibility engendered during the transition from war conditions to peace time conditions. This spirit or unrest not only among the laboring classes but in every branch of the human family following a period of intense nervous tension in a nation appears to be a natural sequence of war and beyond the control of man. This condition will gradually disappear, and the majority of our people will again assume their natural order of living, but labor will for a considerable period be sensitive to these influences, whether they be exerted for good or for evil. Employers of labor should take cognizance of this fact and bend every effort towards the development of measures that promote efficiency and permanence of the working force.Labor efficiency depends upon many and varied factors. Some of these factors as applied to mine labor are briefly enumerated in the following paragraph:Selection and Placement of Manpower:In the selection of men the two main considerations are physical ability and adaptability. The laws of mechanics should be applied in the selection of men as in the selection of machinery. If a machine is required for a certain class of work, the type of machine known to be mechanically fit for such work is selected. Likewise, men should be selected with regard to their physical and temperamental fitness for the kind of work expected of them."

With the growing importance of fluid injection in recent years, the petroleum industry has been investigating and field- testing a variety of new methods designed to modify the physical properties of reservoir oil to improve the efficiency of gas and water injection. These procedures include condensing-gas drive, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) injection, alcohol-slug process, high-pressure-gas displacement, detergent-solution flooding, and in situ combustion (30, 37).3 A new and different method to increase the effectiveness of gas and water injection has been tested by the Bureau of Mines, Consideration of both fundamental and practical factors that operate to limit the oil recovery attain- able by conventional oil-displacement mechanisms led to the concept of a displacement mechanism called the foam-drive method. This report describes the experimental study that tested this concept in the laboratory.

This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.

Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its use as a chemical raw material may be said to have begun in 1918, when Brooks and Humphrey3/ showed. presence of alcohols in the diluted acid oil obtained by the sulfuric acid-treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. However, development of the utilization of natural gas for chemical syntheses was slow, partly because erroneous ideas existed regarding the nonreactivity of tine hydrocarbons composing natural gas. Data accumulated by petroleum chemists throughout the world, particularly since about 1930, have shown that these hydrocarbons will react when activated by the effects of heat, pressure, chemical reagents, and light; also that the reactions can be made to proceed of practicable speeds and to provide good yields of useful products with moderate operating conditions, especially if catalysts are employed. As those results became known, the possibility of a synthetic organic chemical industry based upon these reactions became apparent, and today this industry is large and growing rapidly in importance. In this paper the story of the manufacture of chemical products from natural gas is told simply in graphic form. The industry is developing so rapidly that soma products may have been omitted, but every effort has been made to include all that are important or likely to become so. The difficulty of keeping information of this tape up to date is shown by reference to an information circular4/ or, the sore subject published by the Bureau of Mines in 1930, in which the important products are shown on a single chart, where as five charts are employed for the cane purpose at present.

Recent developments in energy conversion, mining and minerals processing, pollution control, and chemical equipment have placed in-creased demands on heat-resistant alloys. Higher corrosion rates from oxidation, hot corrosion, and sulfidation have increased consumption of materials that contain critical and strategic minerals and in many cases have limited productivity. The Bureau of Mines is conducting re-search on substitute materials having greater resistance to high-temperature corrosive atmospheres above 6000 C compared to austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 304, 316, and 310, with the goal of conserving critical metals such as Cr and Ni. The substitute materials are based on Fe-Cr-Ni-Al compositions. Aluminum additions to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys significantly improve high-temperature corrosion resistance, particularly sulfidation resistance. In the alloy, devised by Bureau researchers, aluminum additions are held in the form of a second-phase precipitate, 8NiAl. Minor additions of Ti, Mn, and Si improve workability.

Stemming is used in blasting operations to help contain explosive gases as long as possible. Stemming can reduce airblast, improve fragmentation, and reduce the chances of hot explosive gases igniting methane and dust explosions in underground mines. Stemming is required in underground coal mines but is generally not used in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Some underground metal and nonmetal mines are classified as gassy and can require special blasting procedures such as the use of stemming to minsure the safety of miners. The types and amounts of stemming material that are desirable in underground metal and nonmetal mine blasting to ensure good or improved fragmentation while containing the hot gases are largely unknown. This Bureau of Mines research examined the effectiveness of differing lengths of stemming by measuring stemming ejection times as related to burden movement. With properly stemmed blasts, stemming is contained until some burden movement has occurred. Test blasts at two surface limestone quarries were evaluated using high-speed photography. For the conditions of these tests, a stemming length of at least 26 charge diameters was found to prevent premature stemming ejection. In tests with stemming lengths of 16 charge diameters, the stemming was effective but there was early venting of hot gases through fractures in the rock. Further testing with other rock types, hole diameters, explosive types, and stemming materials as they affect incendivity is recommended.

The Bureau of Mines, in its alumina miniplant project to investigate alumina recovery from domestic, non bauxitic ores, has conducted research on the use of a hydrochloric acid leaching, gas sparging crystallization technology. An important element of this research is the efficient separation of undissolved, siliceous residue from AICI3 -bearing leach liquors by continuous, horizontal, countercurrent vacuum belt filtration. In an effort to calculate material balances quickly and to predict material balances based on different belt filtration configurations, the perfect-mixing-cells-in-series model (PMCS) for calculating material balances around belt filters was used. Because of the porous nature of the solids, the model produced erroneous material balances. Therefore a reliable model, the shrinking voids model, was developed postulating the presence of an unwashable voids liquor volume that decreases with decreasing liquor AICI3 concentration. This volume decrease postulation is equivalent to assuming that dilute liquors flow more freely, causing more voids liquor volume to become washable. Least-squares based computer programs are provided, which are useful not only in producing material balances from plant data but also in predicting balances for untested configurations using the same feed materials.
