FDM (Fracture Density Model) is a three-dimensional mechanistic model of blast induced rock fragmentation. FDM uses several computational mechanics algorithms to simulate the effect of blasting in different rock types. Earlier, FDM was successfully exercised to simulate 29 small scale shots from the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM), and 6 full-scale bench blasts at the Bararp dimensional stone quarry in Sweden. Excellent agreement was obtained for those shots, and the results were documented in earlier publications. One of the drawbacks of previous ver- sions of FDM was its inability to predict the fines, specifically in Bararp quarry simulations. Ac- curate predictions of fines can be very useful in reducing energy consumptions during down- stream comminution processes and improve the mine-mill operation efficiencies. In this paper, we propose a newer algorithm that can predict the fines as well as the coarse fragments in Bararp with reasonable accuracy. The model was also applied to an open-pit Copper mine with heavily jointed rocks, and it produced very good fragmentation predictions for the full range of fragment sizes. Comparisons with the sieved fragmentation data (for both Bararp stone quarry and the open- pit Copper mines) show great potential for this updated version of FDM in modeling the entire range of fragment size distributions in mining and quarrying applications.

Developers and blasters are faced with increasing public demand and regulatory restrictions to maintain the lowest possible levels of noise and vibration from blasting operations in populated urban areas. Pyrotechnic products have proven to be a low noise, low vibration alternative to conventional blasting for close-in rock excavation and concrete demolition applications. Pyrotechnic breaking charges often yield 1/10th the vibration and noise compared to traditional explosives, and have been demonstrated to increase public confidence and decreased damage potential where they have replaced explosives, thus allowing new opportunities for work and greater job profitability. This paper presents a practical approach to utilizing pyrotechnic products in various applications including trenching, mass excavation, demolition, and dimension stone production, providing methodology for pattern design, vibration probability and loading calculations. Field research data is reviewed and compared to conventional explosives.

A new technique of dimensional stones blasting for achieving directional rock cutting by conical shaped charges is proposed in this study. This technique has many advantages like precisely controlling numbers and propagation directions of cracks under blasting, having a complete rock excavation face, and maintaining surrounding rock and slope’s stability. So it can be applied to quarrying, underground excavation, tunneling, rock slope blasting, bench blasting and dimensional stone blasting.

In the past several years, there have been a number of blasting-related carbon monoxide migration incidents. In each case, there have been some common factors that appear to be related to carbon monoxide migration. Geology, heavy confinement of the blast, close proximity to the affected structure, and open pathways into the affected structure are just a few. Prince William County, VA is an area undergoing a boom in suburban development. In the year 2001, more than 4,050 new homes were constructed within the county.1 In the new housing development located in Bristow, VA, trench blasting was utilized to excavate proposed sewage and utility lines. On November 8, 2002, a trench blast was conducted for the installation of utility lines. Later that evening a carbon monoxide detector alarmed in a nearby house. The gas company and fire department sampled for carbon monoxide and measured 100 ppm and more than 200 ppm on the first floor and in the basement respectively. Subsequent efforts to prevent migration of CO into the nearby homes met with mixed results. The only reliable technique for protecting neighbors from CO appears to be the placement of CO monitors in the homes. The events are presented and discussed.

Numerical modelling of fragmentation and throw is used to provide information on practical blast design parameters. The function of airdecking and its practical implications, the importance of the initiation point and aspect ratio of cratering charges and the timing between adjacent blastholes are investigated. Accuracy requirements for detonators are discussed with emphasis placed on the volume and fragmentation of the blasted rock, and compared to experimental results. Practical guidelines which have been based on intuition are examined using the model. Some of the predictions have been tested and correlate well with experimental results, obtained in the laboratory. Findings show that a minimum airdeck length is needed to realize any benefit from the application of airdecking in production blasting while the process can enhance the shock energy provided by non-ideal explosives significantly, bottom initiation of charges is beneficial to fragmentation and the aspect ratio for cratering charges can exceed the traditionally accepted ratio of 6. Regarding timing, in the ease of cratering charges, true simultaneous initiation shows beneficial results for the volume of blasted rock; however the accuracy required for practical detonators is very high. Fragmentation improves after a certain delay time while the optimum can be achieved at a range of delays. Timing affects muckpile shape; however it appears that subtle differences in delay times do not have a significant effect.

Selection of delay times to optimize fragmentation has been a controversial topic among researchers and blasting practitioners. The paper reviews all available experimental information, ranging from small and medium scale tests in geologic materials to small scale tests at the laboratory and synthetic materials, simulating rock. Tests have been re-analyzed and discussed in terms of the information they present and the limitation of the testing environment in representing actual conditions. New results obtained from blasting experiments in specimens made of a grout have provided a clear picture of the effect of delay on fragmentation. The grout used has a strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi), density of 2.5 g/cm3 and P-wave velocity of 4000 m/s (13100 ft/s). Each block was placed in a yoke to eliminate unwanted reflections and the desired delay was obtained using the appropriate length of detonating cord between holes or sub-millisecond electronic detonators. Delays ranged from 0.1 ms/m (0.03 ms/ft) of burden to 16 ms/m (4.9 ms/ft) of burden. Fragmentation was obtained using screen analysis of the collected fragments. Delay time has been shown to be a significant parameter affecting fragmentation and back break. Generally larger fragments and less back break was observed at short values, while fragmentation somewhat deteriorated at significant delay times, compared to what was observed at intermediate delay times. The work is now extended to include the effect of energy partition on fragmentation as well as the effect of initiation point and coupling ratio.

The thermodynamics work-principle was used to develop the rupture-fracture-throw (RFT) model for ranking the performance of reduced-density explosives when shot in rock or other stratum. The RFT model revises techniques used for the rock-water-jelly (RWJ) model, where the reaction-zone remains trapped within the rock/stratum. Therein, ranking of performance refers to trends for the two resolved components of the total expansion work: the reversible mechanical work taken as the heave and the residual irreversible portion, taken as the undissipated shock. For numeric tractability, the RFT and RWJ thermodynamic efficiency were taken equal, while the RWJ late-stage confinement was replaced with restrained venting through the rock, to render the RFT inefficient heave. The transfer of heat from the reaction-zone was neglected and the root-power formula was used to render the gas-covolume. Ranking trends were found for a generic charge formulation over a wide ranging density, with underwater results noted for comparison. Realistic compositions, some with natural resource materials, were treated for just typical and reduced density. Rock characteristics, ranging from hard rock to weak stratum, were represented by their density and rupture compression strength. Quantitative test results for shock or heave in rock remain difficult, so qualitative guidelines remain helpful when reviewing the graphic trends. Theoretical refinements for rock fragment size-distribution remain under development, though some relationships are touched upon to gain insight.

"Reflectorless laser survey equipment has made it much easier to take accurate measurements toinaccessible locations in quarries, open pit mines and rock slopes. Prior to the introduction of thereflectorless laser as a working tool, it was not possible to directly measure to inaccessible locations on rock faces. If a person could not occupy the point, only indirect measurements could be made. For blasting work, measuring the burden in front of the first row of holes could only be done approximately, using such techniques as holding a plumb line in over the crest, triangulating in on a few points or “eyeballing” the burden. This led to direct and significant problems with blasting, including flyrock and airblast (caused by insufficient front row burden), excessive vibrations, problems with oversize and tight digging (all of which may be caused by excessive front row burdens)."

Current world conditions are forcing the search for "green" energy technology in every aspect of our daily lives. Finding alternatives to petroleum fuels seems to be at the top of the list. The search for the "perfect" alternative is something like the never ending quest of the perpetual motion machine. Unfortunately, the laws of physics prevent us from getting something for nothing, and Murphy's Law normally gives us nothing for a lot of something. Regardless of Murphy, the quest goes on, and in our industry cheaper ANFO seems to be the popular subject.

Recent applications of explosives and blasting agents to rubble rock have led to requirements for more elaborate design and analysis methods. In most blasting uses, it is necessary not only to fracture the rock, but also to move the broken rubble in a predictable manner. Many in situ extraction techniques require; rubblization to take place in a confined region where rock motion is a predominate factor in creating a permeable broken bed. In this paper, an engineering model is presented which describes the large rubble motion during blasting. This model is intended to provide the blast designer with a tool for evaluation and further refinement of blasting patterns and timing sequences.

Blasters in the field for years have been faced with the task of plotting blast locations for future reference and calculating scaled distances or seismograph placement from maps,aerial photo's etc.'With the constellation fully operational, GPS provides a satellite signal transmitted to a ground receiver which will display the desired coordinate positioning worldwide, 24 hours a day in any kind of weather conditions. There are a variety of GPS receivers available with varying levels of accuracy. The field trials of a handheld navigational quality instrument for plotting blast and seismograph locations along with other necessary industry related data is the basis of this paper.

The use of water stemming with small explosive charges has been successfully developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Further study has been started to explore additional applications and uses for water stemming. Work has been focused in the areas of rock excavation and perimeter blasting techniques. This ongoing work is being conducted internally as graduate and undergraduate level research. A paper describing the general technique for use with boulder fragmentation was published in last year’s proceedings. The excavation work took place in the form of both small bench and trench shots while pre-split and trim shots comprised the perimeter-blasting portion. The excavation work was located in both the Roubidoux sandstone formation and the Jefferson City dolomite formation. Hole diameters ranged in size from 1.5” to 3” diameter and powder factors ranged from l/l 0 to l/3 of the conventional charge weight. The water was used to both couple the explosive charge with the surrounding borehole, as well as stemming. No other stemming material or products were used. The method of using water stemming in perimeter blasting was found to work well. However, when used for excavation purposes, adequate rock movement was not obtained. The rock was often split, but not fragmented. The airblast was surprisingly low, but the ground vibrations were excessive. This is not the case with trim shots, and therefore this method appears ideal for splitting purposes, especially in areas where people do not like to stem the tops of the holes, and where airblast and vibrations are of concern. Water coupling dramatically increases splitting and fracturing. However, fragmentation is not only fracturing but also the movement and swelling of the material. As the charge weights are reduced with this method, sufficient gas volume is not created to cause this necessary movement and swell, which is critical in rock excavation. This explains why its successful application was limited to perimeter blasting applications.

"There has akvays been plenty of discussion around the ‘accuracy of pyrotechnic detonators withmost recognised manufacturers claiming a variability of arourid 1% or less for their ‘superaccurate’ pyrotechnic based detonators. It is only now being understood that this 1% variabilitycan have serious adverse effects on blast performance. For example a 1% accurate 500millisecond shock tube detonator can fire anywhere between 485ms and 515ms. When wecouple these rather inaccurate ‘accurate’ detonators with short delays on surface, such as a 17millisecond connector, the probability of delay crowding and even out of sequence firing is quitehigh."

Research has shown that information technology alone will not provide companies with a sustainable competitive advantage. However, where information technology is used to assist the development and enhance the performance, of the employee sustainable competitive advantage can occur. A Performance Support System is a tool that combines explosive's theory, government regulations, and site specific knowledge in an easily accessible computer program. In this paper five areas are addressed where a Performance Support System can assist the user: as a reference source, in an assistant or advisory role, as a instruction aid, in regulatory compliance, and as an operations monitor.
