Submarine hydrothermal mineralization occurs in at least three locations along the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Weak hydrothermal discharges occur off Kos and Nisseros at the eastern end of the arc and off Milos at the western end. In both cases the hydrothermal solutions are rich in iron and manganese and are precipitating iron oxides variably enriched in minor elements. This points to the likely presence of sulphide minerals at shallow depth below the sea floor at these locations. By contrast, at Santorini, in the centre of the arc, the hydrothermal discharges are much stronger and rate of deposition of the hydrothermal minerals much greater. Indeed, in one of the two hydrothermally active embayments off Santorini (Nea Kameni) hydrothermal deposits are accumulating up to five times as fast as in the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these deposits have been accumulating for about 100 years. In the other embayment off Santorini (Palaea Kameni), hydrothermal deposition has taken place over a longer period (more than 1,000 years) but the deposits are not so hydrothermally enriched due to the simultaneous deposition of biogenic silica and detrital mineral with the hydrothermal deposits. The observed pattern of increasing intensity of submarine hydrother¬mal activity from the extremities of the arc towards its centre argues for additional hydrothermal mineralization on poorly explored areas of the sea floor between Milos and Santorini and between Kos and Santorini.

The elucidation of the theory of plate tectonics has provided a conceptual framework for understanding the formation and distribution of different types of ore deposits. For example, we now recognize that certain kinds of mineral deposits are generally associated with a particular type of plate boundary (i.e., massive sulfides often occur along divergent plate boundaries, whereas porphyry copper deposits are typically found along convergent boundaries). During certain geologic time periods, plate reorganization events have changed the relative proportion of different types of plate boundaries. Corresponding changes have been observed in the abundance and distribution of ores deposited during these times. The present study examines the temporal aspects of this relationship; i.e., do plate reorganization events play an active or passive role in ore formation? In other words, do plate reorganizations simply provide a more favorable tectonic setting in which ore formation can occur over significant time periods, or are they directly linked to the mineralization process? We have examined this question by comparing regional tectonic histories with the ages of known massive sulfide and porphyry copper deposits. Because these deposits, in particular massive sulfides, form as a result of hydrothermal activity, we have also compared regional tectonic histories with proxy indicators of this process in the marine sedimentary record. These indicators include increased mass accumulation rates of Ca, Fe, Mn, and opal, characteristic changes in the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of biogenous carbonates, and shoaling of the carbonate compenstion

Hyperspectral remote sensing has been used extensively on land to identify minerals for the mining industries. An underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) has been developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. It captures optical fingerprints within the spectral range of 400-700 nanometers, with 1 nm resolution. The UHI has been tested on nodules and SMS deposits in the laboratory and on the sea floor to establish if this technology can be used to identify marine mineral deposits, to determine type of deposit and distribution.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. A long history of gold production at Nome, Alaska has resulted in long term interest in the nearshore environment as a production target. Mining by Western Gold Exploration and Mining Company offshore of Nome yielded approximately 100,000 troy ounces of gold in the period 1986 through 1990. This study was designed to determine the relationship between heavy minerals, sediments, and gold concentrations which occur in the upper meter of sediment offshore of Nome. Standard procedures were implemented for grain size analysis, heavy mineral separations, and heavy mineral frequency determination.

Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from seawater onto a rock substrate and are therefore considered hydrogenetic in origin. Diagenesis does occur however, through the process of phosphatization. During phosphatization, abundant dissolved phosphate in seawater replaces carbonate in the detrital fraction as well as directly precipitates within the FeMn matrix as carbonate fluorapatite (CFA). This process is likely accompanied by the partial dissolution or replacement of the oxide phases [1]. As a result of these diagenetic processes, trace elements adsorbed on the oxides are released and can either be depleted or enriched in the phosphatized FeMn crust layers. Pb, for example, has been shown in sequential leaching experiments to associate with the iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) phase in purely hydrogenetic layers, while >95% of Pb in phosphatized crust layers is found in the CFA fraction [2, 3]. However, previous sequential leaching studies analyzed bulk layers of phosphatized crusts and only a few crusts, from the Pacific Ocean. Here we present concentration data for Pb and other trace elements in the CFA fraction leached from thin stratigraphic intervals of the phosphatized portion of FeMn crusts from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to confirm consistency of trace metal association with CFA both throughout the phosphatized section and in two ocean basins. The Pb and trace element concentration data from this study will also be compared with data from non-phosphatized crusts from the global ocean. We can then determine the effect of phosphatization on the concentration of Pb and other elements of greater economic interest in FeMn crusts, specifically whether there is overall enrichment, depletion, or possibly even phase transfer of each metal in the phosphatized layers.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

Detailed geological studies using side scan sonar, bottom sampling and piston cores along the Rio Grande do Sul inner continental shelf and coastline indicate the occurrence of elongate deposits of calcareous shells fragments containing high calcium carbonate content. On the inner shelf these deposits lie at a depth between 15 and 50 meters and have been interpreted as ancient shorelines. They occupy an area of 965 km2 with a economic potential of 1 billion tons. Chemical analyses indicate a mean composition of 34.8% of calcium; 0.16 ppm of fluoride. According to the regional economy such composition make it highly recommended for a variety of uses including poultry feed and cement.

Typical coastal placers leave no doubt that placer accumulation can result in significant concentration of heavy minerals in marine shallow water environment. However, the same situation is quite predictable for guyot?s slopes at stages of submarine volcano formation and later submersion of guyots to a depth of up to 3-4 km. Where these placers could be found is also clear ? in coastal facies (as typical coastal placers), and in morphological traps down guyot slopes in zones of active submarine currents. The latter could be cracks in rocks, shallow depressions, spurs, and structures, such as coral reefs, stromatholiths, and even ferromanganese crusts. The last of these have been studied carefully by the author in the Magellan Seamounts and on the Mid-Pacific Rise: tens of minerals, including mineral forms of PGE, REE, Mo, W, Te, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, &Zn were identified as a xenogenic (trash) minerals. The detailed study of polished epoxydized sections, showed that interstitial spaces of Fe-Mn botryoids are enriched in heavy minerals (predominantly titanomagnetite). Taking into account the irregular character of crust surfaces and their position in active water environment, we can definitely state that they are the ideal traps for placer minerals. Study of guyot basaltic matter showed the presence of similar REE, PGE minerals that are in the crusts, and the same (mostly) micron sizes of minerals. High content of PGE in some basaltic varieties (up to 1 ppm) suggests that this is a reasonable source of these elements in the crusts, rather than the water column (which is normally considered to be the case by most marine scientists). Predominance of Pt in hydrogenous (?) crusts is interpreted as due to the better stability of Pt mineral forms during weathering and transportation (these are isoferroplatinum, and silicides). Comparison of 143Nd/144Nd values in bulk crusts, heavy fraction of crusts, basalts, and water column supports the author?s idea, that a significant part of REE also comes from basaltic matter (in form of monazite, CeO2 etc.).

A comprehensive multi-disciplinary marine geological survey of northwestern Graham Island, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada was conducted by Offshore Survey and Positioning Services Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. on behalf of the Geological Survey of Canada; Energy, Mines & Resources Canada, Pacific Geoscience Centre, Sidney, B.C. Canada during October 1984 and July 1985. The aim of the survey was to map both the surficial geology and geomorphology in order to identify and evaluate the nature of the nearshore sedimentation and recent tectonics including stability (slumps and scarps) seafloor faults (frequency and displacements) and both the classification and consistency of soil type boundaries and properties. Data was acquired by utilizing conventional indirect applied marine geophysical techniques including side scan sonar, precision echo sounding and complimentary soil sampling. During October 1984 a total of 320 line kilometres of data including 180 soil samples were acquired. During July 1985 a total of 300 line kilometres of data were acquired including 150 soil samples.

Concern over the availability of domestic critical and strategic mineral supplies has led the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserve development potential of alternative sources in Alaska. Near the village of Platinum, on the southwest Alaska coast, the Red Mountain concentrically zoned ultramafic complex is a source of onshore alluvial placers containing platinum-group-metals (PGM). It has long been suggested that valuable placers may also underlie the shallow coastal waters of the Bering Sea. A direct correlation of placer PGM and chromium to ultramafic rocks in the area was studied by the Bureau and the extent of the complex was mapped. Magnetometer and gravity data and geological studies suggest the complex is a large lensoidal body trending several kilometers offshore to the southwest with a probable steep southeasterly dip. Multiple Pleistocene glaciations and marine transgressions have eroded the western and southwestern portion of the complex. Sediments containing PGM, chromium, and associated gold (largely derived from glacial till) have been transported northward along the advancing coastline by littoral currents. Beyond the breaker zone, these sediments are generally buried by recently winnowed sand and gravel transported by strong longshore tidal currents. There is also evidence that paleoplacer channels underlie the marine sediments.

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). A geologist can be likened to a medical pathologist trying to figure out from faint clues how something had lived and how it died, often long after the event. Present-day seafloor hydrothermalism has empowered geologists/pathologists to dissect a living system, in this case volcanogenic massive sulfides (vms) deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold. On the other hand, a considerable amount of our understanding of seafloor hydrothermal processes and its products stem from our knowledge, much of it from industry, of these same processes and products that formed ancient ores in oceans as much as 2700 million years ago and are now mined on land.

Environmental considerations are a key driver within the marine mining consenting process across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. The risks can be mitigated by the common application of existing seabed biological expertise in baseline assessment and monitoring. The key ingredients of a fit-for-purpose, cost-effective seabed ecological assessment include early consideration of ecological issues within the project life-cycle through undertaking detailed desk-top studies as-wellas the multiple-use of data that have been acquired as a consequence of prospecting processes, with such data including remote acoustic data, seabed imagery and sediment samples. These data can be used to inform the design of robust benthic baseline surveys which provide adequate information on the ecological character of the environment in question and habitats and species of conservation importance - decreasing project risk and increasing the likelihood of securing consent.

Stephen D. Scott Steven Scott is a Professor of Geology, Director of the Marine Geology Research Laboratory and, until May 1997, was Chairman for 9 years of Geological and Mining Engineering, all at the University of Toronto. Steve also holds a cross appointment at the University of Western Brittany's European University Institute of the Sea in Brest, France. He was educated at the University of Western Ontario (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and at Penn State (Ph.D.). Steve is a geologist/oceanographer specializing in base and precious metal massive sulfide deposits which he and his students have studied on five continents and on the bottom of three oceans. He was the first ore deposits geologist and first Canadian to witness "black smokers" on the ocean floor. Since 1982, he has participated on 21 oceanographic surface and submersible expeditions, many of them as Chief Scientist. His research team is currently carrying out projects in the W and NE Pacific Ocean. Steve has published more than 150 research papers and lectured in more than a dozen counties. Popularized accounts of his work have appeared in various media.. He has been honored by several awards and distinguished lectureships. Steve is President of the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility, which operates the Canadian ROPOS robotic submersible, and is President of the International Marine Minerals Society.

"INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

"Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE).
