"This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

"Certain northern Saskatchewan uranium ores have a high content of nickel and cobalt which offer the potential for recovery as a by-product to uranium. A nickel/cobalt recovery process has been developed as a viable method of recovering a marketable concentrate from typical uranium raffinate solution.Impurities are first removed from the raffinate and the pure solution is then treated with sodium carbonate to recover a bulk nickel/cobalt carbonate precipitate for sale to a primary nickel producer. All contaminants of concern are removed to very low levels and the product is free of radioactive contamination with gamma emissions significantly below natural background. Cost estimates have shown that installation of a nickel/cobalt recovery circuit within a uranium process plant is economically feasible.The testwork that led up to the selected process is described along with recommendations for further investigations such as additional testing of hydroxide precipitation as a possible viable alternative to carbonate. The selected process is described and project economics are briefly reviewed.PROCESS TEST PROGRAMBackgroundExtensive metallurgical research has been performed over the years to develop a process for recovering uranium from the Midwest deposit in northern Saskatchewan. During the course of this research, a certain amount of information became available which suggested that recovery of nickel and cobalt from uranium raffinate could be economically feasible. It was decided to undertake a test program which would investigate methods of separating nickel and cobalt from radioactive and other metal contamination to permit production of a saleable product.Available technology suggested that three general approaches could be taken to recover nickel and cobalt. The first and simplest approach would be to selectively precipitate the impurities of concern, primarily arsenic, iron and radium, and then recover a bulk concentrate from the purified raffinate. The second approach would be to purify the raffinate and then remove cobalt from solution by solvent extraction producing pure nickel and cobalt solutions for further treatment. The third approach would be to precipitate all metals from solution and then selectively re-dissolve nickel and cobalt in ammoniac solution which would be further treated by solvent extraction for nickel recovery, leaving cobalt for further treatment."

"The majority of Ontario's limestone and dolostone production comes from a few Paleozoic carbonate units. In eastern and central Ontario, Ordovician rock units, which are the main sources for production, include the Oxford, Gull River, Bobcaygeon, Verulam, and Lindsay Formations. They are predominantly utilized for aggregate and cement manufacturing, with the Bobcaygeon Formation being used as a source of building stone. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the Silurian Lockport, Amabel, and Guelph Formations are sources for the limestone industry. The largest tonnage of rock extracted by the industry comes from these Silurian units, especially the Lockport and Amabel Formations. These units are used primarily for aggregate, although they are also a source for lime. In southwestern Ontario, the Silurian Bertie Formation and Devonian strata, represented by the Bois Blanc Formation, Onondaga Formation, Detroit River Group, and Dundee Formation, contribute to Ontario's production of lime, cement production and crushed stone. The Detroit River Group (Lucas and Amherstburg Formations) is the main source of the lime and cement produced in the province.Northern areas, which may become significant sources for the industry, include Manitoulin Island, the Lake Timiskaming area, and the James Bay Lowland. IntroductionThe Engineering and Terrain Geology Section of the Ontario Geological Survey has undertaken a geological inventory of all active and abandoned limestone and dolostone quarries in Ontario. This report will follow the format and style of D.F. Hewitt's Ontario Department of Mines Industrial Mineral Reports and Circulars (Hewitt, 1960, I964a, 1964b, 1964c; Hewitt and Vos, 1972). Examinations of the quarries were carried out by geologists in the Paleozoic I Mesozoic Geology Subsection of the Engineering and Terrain Geology Section, and include, in addition to the authors, R,R. Wolf, V.A . Mazur, and D.K. Armstrong in the summer of 1986."

"Construction of the first stage of the tailings disposal facility for the Montana Tunnels Project was completed in October 1986. The project is located 37 km south of Helena, Montana, and involves mining of42 million tons of weathered diatreme are at a rate or 13 500 tpd to produce a gold/silver dore, as well as lead and zinc concentrates. The tailings disposal facility for the project includes a fully drained tailings impoundment for storage of the tailings solids, and a process waterpond for storage of all decanted water prior to recyling to the mill. The over-all facility is designed to achieve the basic objectives ofminimizing seepage to the environment in the short- and longterm, and achieving a fully drained stable tailings mass suitable for immediate reclamation on completion of mining. Specific features of the design include a soil bentonite seal and drainage system within the tailings basin, a free draining embankment with a design flow-through capacity of 4000 US gpm and an ultimate height of 230 ft (70 m), and a soil bentonite lined make-up water pond with a capacity of 420 acre-feet (530 000 m'). The tailings will be discharged in a rotational sequence through multiple spigot offtakes to achieve a thin-layer low energy laminar flow. This 'sub-aerial' deposition results in higher stored densities and maximizes liquid-solid separation on the tailings beaches. The over-all design played a major role in the successful permitting of the project, and was significantly cheaper than a conventional wet disposal system, with overall unit costs for tailings disposal of less than US$0.36 per ton.This paper outlines the site characteristics and the tailings material properties and their influence on the design. Extensive use was made of naturally occurring free draining materials as well as bentonite modified soil liners within the tailings basin, embankment and retention ponds. General construction procedures for the various components are described, as well as on-going construction requirements utilizing materials from the open pit. Finally, the over-all costs and unit costs for tailings disposal are presented."

Printed circuit boards of discarded personal computers, televisions, mobile phones and so on contain a significant amount of valuable metals. For the recycle of valuable metals contained in the printed circuit board wastes (P CB W), the effect of temperature on chlorination-volatilization of metals under chlorine gas flow was studied. The experimental sample used was powder of two types: crushed PCBW (Sample 1) made from PC and industrial machines, and crushed-combusted PCBW (Sample 2) made from Sample 1. The principal element in Sample 1 and Sample 2 was copper, about 13 wt% and 20 wt% respectively. Sample 1 was composed of pure metals such as copper, tin and lead. In comparison, Sample 2 consisted of oxide metals such as copper oxide, tin dioxide and silicon dioxide. The two samples were heated at predefined temperatures (ranging from 300 °C to 900 °C) in chlorine gas. The chlorine gas flow into the furnace was set at a rate of 100 mL/min. As a result, copper in Sample 1 began to volatilize at 600 °C and completely vaporized at 700 °C. While in Sample 2, copper started to volatilize at 600 °C and reached 100% vaporization at 800 °C. For Sample 1, zinc finished volatilizing at 500 °C, while for Sample 2, zinc volatilization reached only about 80% (maximum). Also, lead, nickel and titanium showed similar results. Consequently the volatilization rate of Sample 1 is higher than Sample 2 and the temperature dependency was verified for copper, lead, zinc, nickel, antimony, titanium and chromium. In fact, the volatilization rate of these metals increased with the temperature. This result reflects the difference between pure metal and metal oxide, as Sample 2 was combusted before the chlorination-volatilization test. Moreover, the chlorination reaction may be accelerated by a reductive atmosphere because Sample 1 contains carbon. In this study, the volatilization behavior of some valuable metals in PCBW by chlorine gas was observed. Further improvement in the rate of volatilization can be achieved by optimizing the experimental conditions.

"The better the information on the rock mass and its fracture system, the better is the basis for any rock mechanical decision that is required during the excavation process. While in conventional tunnelling free view to the tunnel face is available, possibilities are limited for mechanised tunnelling using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). An approach, already formulated in 2005, is used that produces digital photographs through openings in the cutting wheel of a TBM and merges them into a circular three-dimensional image. The 3D image is then used for geometric rock mass characterisation purposes including geological mapping, for example to measure spatial orientations or determine joint spacing. In the paper the basic concept is described together with first results from a pilot test.INTRODUCTIONA three-dimensional image unites digital photographs with spatial information on the objects/surfaces it shows. Since they combine geometric and visual information they are a straightforward source for geometric rock mass analysis and geological mapping. Their obvious benefits among others are: (i) they allow spatial measurements even in inaccessible regions, (ii) they provide objective and reproducible records of the rock mass conditions, and (iii) they increase working safety (Gaich et al. 2004).Pre-requisite for the generation of 3D images is the acquisition of at least two photographs from the region of interest. From the photographs the imaged object surfaces are reconstructed by means of image analysis using methods from photogrammetry (Slama, 1980) and computer vision (Hartley & Zisserman, 2001). "This paper discusses the changing nature of reserve/consumption ratios, using data from Canadian operations and focussing particularly on copper.IntroductionStudies in world metal consumption and world metal reserves are done regularly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Raw Materials, and other institutions. Formerly, on the basis of these data, the following figures were calculated:• a static lifetime of reserves-reserves at year end divided by the consumption of the previous year;• a semidynamic lifetime of reserves-reserves at year assumed constant growth rate.These figures were severely criticized because they were purely theoretical and did not consider the availability of the raw materials.Recent practice is to calculate reserve/consumption ratios (R/C ratios) for periods(1) or for different years(2,3) and to interpret the trend. For base metals, these R/C ratios are increasing (Table 1). This had led to the conclusion that today the relative availability of base metal reserves has increased as compared to 10 or 15 years ago(4,5) As there are normally numerous deposits for each commodity, the anticipated production rates of deposits are irrelevant to this conclusion as long as the statistical distribution of possible production rates does not change significantly.The above conclusion is only justified if the quality and the nature of the data base remain the same. This is certainly the case for the consumption data. It is also assumed for the quality of the reserve figures, which usually take into account only proven and probable reserves. For the nature of the reserve figures, however, this does not seem to be true.Undoubtedly, the reserves increased in absolute terms between 1966 and 1978. To put the absolute reserve figures into perspective, it is common, as said above, to compare them with the mine production, which increased in the free world between 1966 and 1978; e.g. for copper by 40%, for Pb by 17% and for zinc by 36%. However, the reserves are also influenced by other factors, such as average size of the mines, changes in the grade of the mined ore, price-to-cost relationships and the like.The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of the reserve figures in more detail. Because the completeness of mining data published in Canada is rather exceptional, Canadian .data serve as an example and it is assumed that the conclusions can be extrapolated to other mining countries or at least to those with free market systems."

Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

"IntroductionThe purpose o f this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder's history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordinance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

The target of this study was to clarify the role of lead on the dissolution of gold in the (NH4)2S2O3-Cu leaching system via chronopotentiometry, linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry. It was found that the dissolution of gold was significantly increased with lead concentration up to 10 mg/1 Pb in the system of 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 and 50 mg/1 Cu. \/oltammograms suggested that the anodic dissolution of gold was virtually independent of lead concentration in the range of 1-10 mg/1 in 0.1 M (NH4)2S2O3 solution while in solutions containing copper as well, addition of lead increased the anodic dissolution of gold.

We investigate the technical feasibility of bioleaching of metals from low grade sulphidic ore. Experiments were conducted with an adapted consortium of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans and Thermoplasm acidophilum in batch bioreactors (1.5 L), small columns (10 kg ore load, 8 % S0 sludge) and large columns (80 kg ore load, 12 % S0 sludge). Approximately 83 % Ni, 85 % Cu, 55 % Fe and 81 % Zn was leached out in batch mode while 93 % Ni, 89 % Zn, 81 % Cu and 65 % Fe was leached out in column reactors. Bioleaching potential improved by acid pre-leaching, adaptation of microbial consortium and periodic bleeding of effluents.

"The gravimetric dust sampler is one of the tools now available to the industrial hygienists for determining the worker 's exposure to the numerous types of particulate matter that may be present in the workplace. The paper ' reviews the different sampling trains that can be used for the two major criteria for respirable dust and some of the sources of error in this dust assessment technique.IntroductionIt may be stated simply that the measurement of airborne dust in the working environment is done for one or two reasons: namely, for engineering control purposes and! or to evaluate the potential for toxicological insult arising from the inhalation of dust particles.This paper reviews the progress made in the development of dust-assessing instruments, particularly the gravimetric types designed to meet British and U.S. dust criteria , and discusses the limitations in their use for this purpose."

"The need to make repairs is seldom a major consideration in the design, fabrication and installation of major components of electrical generation plants. Repair welding, however, is a fact of life in the electrical generation industry, for restoration of degradation in service, from cavitation of hydraulic turbine runners, to corrosion and fatigue damage in pressure vessels. In making weld repairs to carbon and low-alloy steels, the largest source of trouble is hydrogen embrittlement and related post-weld cracking. Various strategies have been developed to control problems from this source, including post-weld heat treatment, the use of nickel-base alloy filler metals and the temper bead welding technique. Each of these basic strategies is being applied as circumstances require; each strategy must, however, be implemented in a manner that reconciles weldment structure and hardness, degree of restraint and service environment with the consequences of unsatisfactory performance of the repaired component.IntroductionMajor working components of electric generating plants are specified and installed on the basis that, wherever technically and economically feasible, they will retain functional capacity without major repairs for the twenty-five-plus years of normal plant lifetime. Nevertheless, repairs are often required, and welding is usually an essential feature of the work. Remedial welding may be performed to correct design or fabrication errors which become evident only at the time of component installation. The most common causes of requirements for repair involve corrosion, fatigue or related processes which prove more aggressive than expected during service. Increasingly, our planning for future repair requirements is related to continual improvements which are occurring in nondestructive evaluation technology. As components are periodically reinspected during their service life, fabrication induced defects may be revealed for the first time quite late in the life of the component. When this occurs, repair must be considered wherever inaccessibility of a flaw makes it impossible to prove its inactivity. Finally, there are certain components, for instance in hydraulic turbines, which cannot be economically made or used without the expectation of service induced wear. Here, periodic maintenance welding must be regarded as a normal event."

The main importance of acicular ferrite microstructures arises from their desired combination of mechanical properties in comparison with the bainite and ferrite-pearlite microstructures. Several factors affect the microstructural transition from bainite microstructure into the acicular ferrite one. As is well established any factor corrupting the prior austenitc grain boundaries nucleation potential, such as the thin layer of allotriomorph ferrite and the austenitc deformation inhomogenities may promote the acicular ferrite formation instead of bainite. Accordingly, this study deals with the effects of the aforementioned features on the acicular ferrite formation in low carbon microalloyed steel. The results indicate that the formation of strain-induced ferrite at the prior austenite grain boundaries accompanied by deformation inhomogenities in the austenite grains change the effectiveness of allotriomorph ferrite on acicular ferrite formation from active to inert one.

The process modules available are:• crushing by jaw and cone crushers;• pre-concentration by the Dyna Whirl Pool dense media system;• grinding by wet rod or ball mills;• separation by gravity, magnetic, flotation or leaching-CVP adsorption methods;• dewatering by lamella or conventional thickeners and vacuum filters.To form complete plants, auxiliary equipment is also available, such as:• bins, feeders and conveying systems;• power generator units;• water tank and pump for process water;• interconnecting piping and cables;• erection and service tool kits;• set of spare and wear parts.For mine sites with rainy or winter conditions, a plastic tent with air heater can be supplied to cover the ore dressing equipment. "This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from electric arc furnace baghouse dust at a mini-steelplant. Recent studies and literature are referenced briefly as they pertain to the formation and characterization of dust, toxicity considerations and alternative dust treatment and disposal options.Laboratory testwork results, published data, pilot plant experience and anticipated influences resulting from recycling residues are used for the purpose of developing a conceptual design for a caustic leach - electrowinning plant to treat 15,000 tonnes/year of dust at a one million tonnes /year capacity steelplant in Canada.Target economic studies, comprising preliminary estimates of capital and operating costs, revenues and rate of return are presented. Economic and commercial considerations concerning the relative merits of dust treatment at a centralized facility compared with an on-site plant are discussed.IntroductionThe treatment or disposal of mini-steelplant electric arc furnace (EAF) baghouse dust has been given increasing attention in recent years for two principal reasons. Firstly, the dust is now classed as a hazardous waste material under V.S. EPA regulations which prohibit its disposal in dumps other than controlled landfill sites. Secondly, the dust contains certain metal values, notably zinc and lead, which may be economically recoverable, depending on the costs associated with disposal resulting from enforcement of the EPA regulations. Other metallurgical dusts and waste materials, from both ferrous and non-ferrous operations, may require the same considerations as EAF baghouse dust.Several studies have been carried out to examine various aspects of dust treatment but few commercial plants are in operation. Technology employed uses pyrometallurgical techniques. Commercial-scale hydrometallurgical plants are not known to exist although small-scale plants are frequently more economically attractive than their pyrometallurgical counterparts which generally require economies of scale to be viable.The concentration of mini-steelplants in northeast V.S.A. and southeast Canada merits study to determine whether or not dust treatment for metals recovery is a commercially feasible alternative to disposal.This paper examines the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from EAF baghouse dust at an on-site ministeel plant processing carbon steel scrap and discusses economic and commercial considerations pertaining to dust treatment at a larger, centralized facility."

Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

Annual oil production from the Canadian Oil Sands in Northern Alberta has been rising for several decades, and more ore and overburden are excavated each year from an increasing number of open pit mines. Overburden meeting certain specifications will be used to dam tailings and fill open pits, but the remaining material must be stored in overburden storage structures (OBSS). Well-designed overburden storage structures are more stable and cost less in the short- and long-term. The purpose of this paper is to explore OBSS designs that will be stable yet economical in the short- and long-term. The geological background of the site is briefly discussed, including the effect of each of the main geologic layers (recently deposited till and muskeg, Clearwater Formation clay shales, McMurray Formation oil sands, and the Devonian limestone) on the slope stability of the OBSS. Cost is considered in the analysis when balancing between minimizing costs (steeper slopes) and acceptable factors of safety (flatter slopes), all the while considering the financial consequences of failure. Potential failure planes are identified and probabilistic analysis is conducted on the critical failure surface. The variations in the factor of safety caused by varying pore water pressure, friction angle, and cohesion, are plotted and discussed.
