Microbial biofilms are essentially biologically driven, geochemically reactive interfaces between solid surfaces and aqueous solution. Field investigation of acid rock drainage (ARD) associated biofilms at the Onaping nickel mine (Onaping, ON, Falconbridge Ltd.) characterizing: (1) micro-geochemical gradients (pH and 02) (2) metal fractionation amongst biofilm solid components, and (3) microbial communities; over both seasonal and diel timescales, indicates biofilms are highly metal reactive. Results show that biofilms accumulate metals seasonally within two microbially controlled solid fractions: amorphous hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) biominerals and the organic biofilm matrix. The biofilm geochemical microenvironment, driven largely by microbial activity, dynamically impacts biofilm metal behaviour over diel timescales. These results indicate that microbes can play significant roles in bulk system reactive metal transport. On-going investigation seeks to characterize the microbial players and the microbial-geochemical linkages involved in Mn oxyhydroxide formation and subsequent metal sequestration, with the goal of engineering this microbial activity as a bioremediative approach. This approach will have utility beyond specific application to the Falconbridge Onaping site to ARD mine environments in general, as the likely microbes involved in these processes are typically common across ARD systems.

"Environmental problems encountered with the use of diesel equipment in underground mining operations are discussed. The concept and procedure o implementing the Health Effects Index equation as a means of quantitatively assessing an underground working environment is outlined and sample calculations are present ed. Advantages and disadvantages of utilizing this method are also discussed.IntroductionWith the introduction of diesel-powered mining equipment in the 1960s there arose several question s for the environmental engineer to consider. These included: 1. What are the constituents of diesel exhaust and how can they be detected and evaluated?2. What are the toxicities and long-term health effects of these constituents?3. What is the ventilating volume required to maintain the concentration of these constituents below toxic levels?Diesel engines are a class of reciprocating, internal combustion engines in which relatively high compression ratios are used to generate high air-charge temperatures, which cause ignition of fuel to occur spontaneously. Ideally, perfect combustion of the fuel would produce an exhaust consisting solely of nitrogen (N2), water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2). However, because no combustion process is perfect, relatively small quantities of imperfect-combustion products, or pollutants, are also generated. These include hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon (C) or soot, and sulphur dioxide (SO2).Currently, the Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants, made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Section 176), stipulate that weekly tests shall be made to determine the carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in the undiluted exhaust and at the operator's position, and the nitrogent dioxide (NO2) concentration at the operator's position. Also, the aldehyde (as HCHO) concentration in the atmosphere, at the operator's position, is to be measured at least every three months. Threshold limit values (TLVs) have been established for each of the three combustion products, and each is regarded as a separate entity. Consequently, this does not allow for consideration of interactions and possible synergistic effects between the various exhaust components."

With more and more industrial construction projects implementing RFID and other sensor-based technologies on fabrication and project sites, new innovative processes are needed to help automatically read and re-position RFID tags while reducing the cost to deploy RFID infrastructure over large areas. RFID tags are being used on construction sites to help identify the location of materials, equipment and personnel to aid in finding project critical materials and equipment required to construct the industrial facility on time and on budget. This research provides a cost-effective process for reading tens of thousands of RFID tags over large project sites from outdoor laydown yards, to warehouses to the workface where the materials and tagged equipment are installed. Based on the collected RFID and sensor data, localization mechanisms determine the most recent coordinates of the tagged components. The paper will cover analysis of RFID collected data and key lessons learned from a commercial deployment of the SiteSense® system with one Alberta-based industrial contractor, JV Driver Fabricators, at an 80-Acre module, pipe spool and structural steel fabrication site.

Building Information Modeling is a prevailing methodology in the building industry and half (by length) of the world's shield tunnels are in Japan. Accordingly, for shield tunnels from 2005 to 2007, we developed a product model called IFC-ShieldTunnel, which is based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), in order to meet the future demand for such a product model. IFC-ShieldTunnel was developed by adding new elements that are specific to shield tunnels and that are not included in the original IFC. The added elements include shafts, segments (A, B, and K types), waterproofing elements, segment joint elements, and ring joint elements. Furthermore, soil layers and void elements were created. Recently, we updated the product model by re-organizing the entities and correcting errors. We deployed the updated IFCShieldTunnel model in the construction of an actual shield tunnel in Tokyo for about a year from August 2010 in order to check its feasibility. In the verification process, first, segments were modeled using Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 and property data were assigned to each segment element. Next, a mapping between the original attributes of the entities of IFC and properties of IFC-ShieldTunnel segments was developed. Using this mapping and IFC?s IfcBuildingElementProxy function, we were able to convert the IFC data from Revit Structure 2011 to IFC-ShieldTunnel automatically. Segment data were also converted from Revit Structure to Google SketchUp by IFC-ShieldTunnel. Furthermore, the construction scheduling and cost data were converted from Revit Structure to EXCEL for 4D and 5D analyses of construction. We interviewed engineers who used IFC-ShieldTunnel and received positive comments about the utilization of the product model. Overall, our test demonstrated the feasibility of IFC-ShieldTunnel. In future work, we plan to apply IFC-ShieldTunnel to more projects and test its practicality.

The option to leach iron from low grade copper concentrates could reduce transport costs and significantly improve the saleability of the concentrate. In addition, it reduces smelting costs and can remove undesirable impurities. The trend to produce cleaner and higher grade copper concentrates is very appealing to the smelters. A recent copper project came on line and there were three serious deficiencies which were not identified in the feasibility study. This came as a surprise and resulted in a number of projects to investigate ways of rectifying the problems in the shortest timeframe possible and using minimal new capital. The first serious issued not identified when commissioning was the lower than expected copper recovery, which was 70% compared to a predicted recovery of 80% to 87% in the feasibility study. This required investigating new flotation reagents and incorporating controlled potential sulphidisation. The second serious issue overlooked is the presence of significant amounts of talc minerals (insol) in the ore which are naturally floatable. This leads to lower concentrate grade and attempts to remove the talc resulted in lower copper recovery. Smelters have limits on the amount of talc in concentrate because it produces viscous slags and difficulties for the smelter. It also incurs higher transport costs. The third serious issue not identified in the feasibility study was the high arsenic reporting to the concentrate. Arsenic is a penalty element for smelters and at levels exceeding 0.3% the smelters may reject the concentrate. Arsenic is a problem environmentally for copper smelters and penalties apply when it is high. This paper describes the options for penalty element removal and suitability to incorporate into the modified flowsheet. It also highlights where the geometallurgy was not properly addressed and how these surprises could have been avoided. INTRODUCTION From 1970 to 1985, a copper company undertook metallurgical testwork on the Peruvian project copper ore. The ores were mined underground and treated over many years previously. Various other groups undertook studies and work until Aker Kvaerner undertook a feasibility study in 2006. Three ore composites were tested and grind-recovery relationships were developed. The feasibility study testwork identified that talc was a possible concern and will have an impact on copper concentrate grade. This was to be managed by blending. The current operating reality is that there is so much talc in the ore body it is not possible to blend it out. There was far more emphasis on molybdenum recovery. No mention was made of arsenic issues other than blending. There was a Concentrate Leach Study and a Molybdenum Hydrometallurgical Plant Study but these options did not proceed to a final flowsheet. A Scoping Study in 2006 looked at a Heap Leach project. The heap leaching gave very poor copper recovery on the sulphide ore. Heap Leaching was evaluated and tested for the high talc and high arsenic ore but recoveries were poor. The Aker Kvaerner feasibility study opted for a simple primary crush SAG/ball grind followed by flotation and sale of a concentrate. This is the current flowsheet utilised and the scale of the project is very large based on processing 117,200 tonnes of ore per day. A feasibility study does not guarantee success and the deviations from the feasibility study suggest there is a lot of technical work required to improve the current metallurgical performance.

Cyanide leaching from fine milled ore or tailings, from upstream recovery operations, coupled with adsorption onto relatively coarse granules of activated carbon, concentrate the gold enough to be converted to bullion by time-honoured methods.The carbon granules are fragile. Size degradation in handling must be minimized not only to prevent loss of gold on fine fragments of carbon that could pass with the barren tailings, but to maintain adsorption efficiency. Besides, the granulated carbon itself is costly. Circular Vibroscreens are winning acceptance for dewatering carbon granules thanks to their gentle yet effective performance in gold recovery systems around the world. The system at Equity Silver is illustrative.BackgroundEquity Silver Mines Ltd., Houston, British Columbia, first began production in September 1980. In 1984, a feasibility study showed that additional gold and silver could be economically recovered through cyanide leaching of the flotation tailing.Although the carbon-in-pulp (ClP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) process is commonly used for extracting precious metals from slurries, the use of circular vibrating screens, and Vibroscreens in particular, for the carbon circuit is an innovation that cuts costs.Rectangular vibrating screens have been the conventional separation mechanism of choice across North America. In contrast, the use of Vibroscreens has been proven to be less costly for the initial purchase and installation. Also, these circular vibrating screens require less power and less space. A description of Equity Silver Mines' process shows how these screens have been successfully integrated into the system."

"Horizontal wells in coal seams, Qinshui basin, China are prone to wellbore instability problems induced by drilling, completion and production operations due to the presence of natural cleat network, anisotropy with regard to permeability, brittleness and mechanically weak property of the coal rock. The mechanism of wellbore instability in coal seams is very different from that in conventional formations, the traditional wellbore stability study methods therefore, are not proper for wellbore stability analysis in coal.In this study, the mechanism and controlling of wellbore stability of coal seams in the Qinshui basin was investigated through theoretical modeling, laboratory experiment and field operation. Firstly, a new physical model of wellbore stability for highly-cleated coalbed was proposed, considering the combined effect of mechanical mechanism and reservoir characteristics, specifically, taking the effect of reservoir pore pressure in the vicinity of the wellbore on the wellbore stability into account. Then experiments on the triaxial stress evaluation were conducted at laboratory where rock mechanical parameters such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, angle of internal friction and cohesion ability were measured respectively. The in situ stress at different depths in four wells of Zheng 1-303, Zheng 1-308, Zheng 1-309, and Zheng 1-310 in the Zhengzhuang were calculated, and the collapse pressure and formation breakdown pressure were predicted through the theoretical model we developed. Finally, by comparing the maximum collapse pressure and minimum breakdown pressure of the four wells in the coal as well as in the roof and floor of the coal seams, the fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams was determined, and appropriate approaches against anti-sloughing in coal seams, Qinshui basin were applied in the field operation.The wellbore stability was found not only related to the wellbore pressure, but also affected by the pressure in the reservoir through the theoretical model. The fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams varies with the coefficient of wellbore stability in the model. The laboratory experiment results indicate that the roof and floor of 3 # coal in Qinshui basin has high breaking strength, high heterogeneity, and are easy to collapse and breakdown. In addition, the whole rock mineral analysis shows that 3 # coal in the Duanshi block has high clay content, resulting in the phenomenon of hydration swelling as clay encountered water, and leading to unstable coal and extreme large drilling uncertainties. Due to the effect of the unstable rock mechanical properties of the roof and floor formation on the wellbore stabilizing, drilling parameters, drilling fluid performance and BHA were optimized during the drilling process according to the formation properties, rock mechanical properties and drilling techniques in the field operation."

More than seat-of-the-pants judgments and old-boy networks are required to anticipate these risks and to take actions appropriate to offsetting them. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risk s to a production of key minerals will be presented.IntroductionFirm s with extractive operations outside their home country do not have to be told that political stability and government decisions play a big role in the success o f their operations. The takeover of copper firm s in Chile during the Allende administration in 1971 and the recent decision by Venezuela to reduce Reynolds Metals equity share in a smelting operation from 50% to 28% are two examples of hundreds of events that have determined the profitability of extractive operations over the past decade. Both risks and opportunities for international firms seeking to produce and market raw materials are heavily affected by political conditions. While news of political events travel much faster than in the past and host governments are more clever in shaping the risks as well as the opportunities, politics has always been part of the mining business.What has changed is the need to be more systematic in approaching the assessment of political conditions and how it affects business. The increasing costs of extractive operations, the need for long-range planning, the importance of financial arrangements and the world-wide scope of man y firm s' activities require that the assessment be updated continuously and be comparable across different countries and different types of investments. Political risk analysis, the assessment o f macro-political changes and specific governmental decision s on the operations of extractive industries needs to become as systematic and integrated into corporate decision -making as economic analysis has become over the past two decade s."

"The stability of underground structures made (especially) in jointed rock mass is of the utmost important to designers, engineers and operators. Rock bolting is generally being practised to reinforce excavation walls and roofs by minimizing the movement of rock joints. This study proposes a new analytical model for the prediction of displacements, axial load and shear stress of a fully grouted rock bolt intersected by single or multiple rock joint(s). The governing equations for rock bolt are derived based on the assumption that shear force generated by slippage along the bolt-grout interface has a linear relationship with respect to the relative displacement at the interface. The proposed model is novel compared to the existing literature in the sense that it accounts for rock kinematics as an enriched sum of a continuous part (elastic) and a discontunous (jump) part due to the presence of joint planes. The complete solution of the bolt displacement, axial load and shear stress is derived as a function of the rock displacements, and, it comprises of Heaviside and/or Dirac delta functions in the solution space due to the jump at the intersection point(s) of bolt(s) and joint(s).Our novel solution is able to predict the elastic behavior of a grouted bolt, subjected to opening of the joint planes in pull-out test and also in excavated tunnel. These two cases also serve as benchmarks for grouted rock bolts with multiple joints and can be used for validation of numerical and experimental models. Further, the solution is applied to analyze the behaviour of grouted rock bolt as well as cable bolt installed in circular tunnel, with variations in rock joint(s) opening displacement, shear stiffness in the boltgrout interface and locations of the joint planes. Results indicate that for a specified grout stiffness, the maximum axial load developed in the bolt for discontinuous distribution of rock mass displacement is significantly higher than that of the continuous distribution of rock displacement. This paper provides an analytical interpretation of bolt beaviour considering multiple joint planes with variable joint opening displacements. The results obtained via the analytical method are in line with the corresponding investigation done by other authors. Thus, our analytical treatment can be used to understand bolt behaviour in realistic situations."

Specialist Machine Developments (SMD) is a design and manufacturing company involved in the design of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV?s), ploughs, trenchers and mining machines for use in submerged environments. Established in 1971, the company has made over 500 vehicles for subsea use. These range in size from small remotely operated swimming vehicles with a weight of less than a tonne to heavy duty seabed crawling machines with a weight of up to 310 tonnes (in air). Primarily, these machines have been designed for offshore vessel-based applications, but the machines are equally suited to other submerged mining applications onshore. Many onshore deposits can technically and theoretically be mined using currently available submerged mining ROV technology. Similar equipment to that in use subsea could easily be fast-tracked into use to extend the life of opencast mines facing severe hydrological problems. It could also easily be used to mine vertical ore-bodies where the stripping ratio has become uneconomical due to increasing depth. In some cases mining ROVs could even be suitable for use as the primary extraction method for a new mine. Exploration and extraction techniques used in oil and gas gradually developed and moved from land to offshore in the middle of the last century. Are we about to witness a similar shift with other minerals? This paper describes the design concepts of submerged mining equipment, targetted subsea mineral deposits, the suitability of submerged mining ROVs for onshore deposits, limits to their application and parallel research and development activities which will help to accelerate the use of such equipment in the emerging submerged mining sector.

"Mesoporous materials with large specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume have been widely used in many fields such as ion exchange, gas separation, adsorption, and catalysis. Mesoporous materials prepared using natural zeolite have the advantages of both acid and alkali resistance. In this work, mesoporous materials were prepared using natural zeolite as the starting material and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as a template. The resulting samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption-desorption experiments. The influence of the crystallization temperature and crystallization time on the specific surface area, pore volume, pore size, and morphology of the resulting mesoporous materials are also discussed. Our results show that for an increase in both the crystallization temperature and time, the average pore size first increases then decreases, while the specific surface area first decreases then increases. Based on this work, we concluded that the optimal crystallization temperature was 2003 and the optimal crystallization time was 60 h. These conditions gave an average pore size of 17.93 nm, a pore volume of 0.048 cm3g-1, and a specific surface area of 16.48 m2g-1.INTRODUCTIONMesoporous zeolite, as the name implies, is a highly porous crystalline zeolite. This material is of interest due to its high hydrothermal stability, its adsorption and diffusion properties for macromolecules, and its excellent selectivity and activity as a catalyst. In recent years, it has become a hot spot among research of porous catalytic materials and has been widely used in petroleum and natural gas processing, fine chemical processing, various adsorption and separation tasks, and other uses (Carvalho & Urquieta- Gonzalez, 2015; Teh, Triwahyono, Jalil, Mukti, Aziz, & Shishido, 2015)."

Inco Limited, Ontario Division is currently in the process of decommissioning the Whistle Mine site located near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The most significant component of site decommissioning involved relocating approximately 6.4 million tonnes of acid-generating waste rock to the open pit from two adjacent stockpiles. An engineered cover system was designed for the backfilled pit to reduce the long-term production of acid rock drainage. Geochemical modelling was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various cover options on the longterm water quality of the backfilled pit. Results obtained from performance monitoring of cover system field trials at the site and estimated full-scale construction costs were used to select an appropriate material for the cover system barrier layer. The two-dimensional soil-atmosphere model VADOSE/W was used to develop a calibrated model of covered waste rock based on field data obtained from the cover trials, which was subsequently used to predict net percolation and oxygen ingress through various cover system alternatives for site-specific climate conditions. Erosion and landform evolution numerical modelling was completed to assist in designing the runoff management system and final landform for the pit cover system. The potential impact of various physical, chemical and biological processes on the sustainable performance of the pit cover system was also considered in the design process. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction of the backfilled pit cover system.

Donald Cranstone holds B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He has worked as a mine geologist, a provincial geological survey geologist and as a senior exploration geologist. He joined what is now the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada in 1971, where he has been a commodity specialist for gold, for copper and another 28 metals. He is a senior mineral economist, currently engaged in analysis of mineral exploration and discovery success in Canada and of the future of the Canadian mining industry. Abstract This paper examines the history of Canadian non-petroleum mineral production. The outlook over the next 25 years, for mining in Canada and in each province and territory, is reviewed. The outlook for mining in Canada and in most provinces/territories is favourable, but problems seem likely in a few jurisdictions unless new orebodies are brought into production. In terms of exploration potential, Canada consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world. Over the last eight years, Canada has consistently been second only to Australia as a destination for exploration investment. For the first time, Canada is ranked in terms of total mineral production, including coal and construction materials, relative to all the countries of the world including countries of the former communist bloc.

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.

"Conventionally, direct reduced iron (DRI) mixed with char from rotary furnace discharge is cooled down before separating the char via magnetic separator. The DRI must then be reheated for further downstream processing (i.e. smelting). Outotec has developed the PyroMagTM specifically to conserve thermal energy during this separation process. DRI is cleaned by feeding hot particles directly after reduction onto a rotating surface just above a stationary magnet assembly. This allows hot feeding of the clean DRI to the downstream equipment which renders the entire process more energy efficient.Continuous testing of the PyroMagTM was performed to verify design and separation. Because the use of DRI/char was not practical for test use, the pilot plant testing was conducted using a magnetite/sand mixture heated up to and beyond the Curie temperature of magnetite. The separation was efficient for both cold and hot processing with recoveries varying from 98.6% to 99.74%. As expected, the recoveries decreased to as low as 83.99% as the temperature was increased beyond the curie temperature of magnetite (585°C). Long term separation was thermally efficient and sustainable.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic drum separators are widely used in the mineral processing industry. In a simplified fashion, which is more appropriate for mineral processing, the magnetic susceptibility of a mineral is used to define it as being ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or nonmagnetic. In this respect, minerals with varying degree of magnetic susceptibility can be selectively separated with different types of magnetic separation equipment in different stages of a process flow sheet. The lower strength magnets are employed early in the process to remove highly magnetic fractions. Later stages utilize greater magnetic fields for capture of less magnetically susceptible material."

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. Thirdly, examples of communications enhanced by the network communication note are shown. Finally, remarks are described.

Aurora College ? Yellowknife Campus, in partnership with the Northwest Territories Mine Training Society and industry partners, has developed a 6 ? week program on Underground Mining for delivery in Northern communities. The goal of the program is to inform and connect Northern residents to the career potential at existing and future mining operations throughout the Northwest Territories. The program content includes an introduction to the mine life cycle, basic underground mining methods, the use of technology in training via desktop simulators for underground mining equipment, safety in the workplace, and essential skills training (Ready to Work - North) and assessment. Students completing the short program may then choose to continue into a long (12-week) program to be offered at the Yellowknife Campus. This program expands upon the initial introduction and includes modules on NWT geology, environmental studies, underground mining processes and underground mining equipment operation using the larger enclosed cab simulator for a variety of equipment being used at northern mining operations. Success of both programs will depend upon a variety of factors, many of which are outside of the control of the developers of the training modules. These will be investigated throughout the presentation. Connecting northern employers with northern employees is a major concern. It is hoped that through the development and implementation of a program such as this, that the connection can be made and sustained allowing continued employment for the life of northern mining operations.
