The Kennecott-Outotec Flash Converting technology has been proven as an advanced and mature process in 5 individual plants during the past 2 decades. High grade copper matte (65–72%) produced in the flash smelting, or other smelting technologies is granulated to 3-5mm granules in a water torrent, and further crushed to fine powder (≈50µm) and dried to contain less than 0.3% H2O. Oxygen enriched air, together with fine copper matte powder and lime flux are injected into the reaction shaft by a matte burner. The copper making and slag making reactions will happen in very short time and distance during the particle falling and settling. However, industrial practice has found negative effects caused by sodium contamination. Na is introduced in the copper matte granulating process, and appears as Na2SO4 on particle surface. When Na content was high, scaling problems in the boiler will be worse, and the processing air will be blocked by the growing accretion around the matte burner, and as-produced blister copper is always high in S and O. In this present study, an industrial matte sample was used in the experimental work. Na was introduced into the matte powder by Na2SO4 solution soaking. The burning behaviour of the doped copper matte powder has been investigated as a function of the impurity concentration and processing temperature. Morphology and composition of these samples explained how Na2SO4 converts and reacts in the oxidizing atmosphere, and how they or their converting species influence the burning behaviour of matte particles. Cross-sections of as-prepared samples were analyzed with SEM-EDS, and the reaction mechanism has been carefully interpreted. Results from the present study can benefit both academic and industrial people. INTRODUCTION "Flash Converting" technology was developed jointly by Kennecott Utah Copper Smelter and Outotec (Finland) OY in 1992. The first industrialization of the technology was in Utah Smelter in 1995. Since 2006, it has been successfully applied in Xiangguang Copper, Tongling Jinguan Copper Branch, Fangchengang Jinchuan Copper, and Ningde Southeast Copper. The technology has also been further developed in those smelters. At present, roughly 2 million tons blister copper is produced annually through the Kennecott-Outotec Flash Converting technology, accounting for more than 10% of global primary copper production. The technology has advantages of high efficiency, high sulfur capture rate, good in environmental issues, mature equipment supporting, high automatic control level, low comprehensive energy consumption and flexible connection with the smelting unit, which make the technology to be one of the best choices in investing a new large-scale copper smelter or updating an old copper project in the world.

Blasthole stoping methods were introduced at Birchtree Mine as an alternative to the original cut-and-fill and shrinkage stoping methods. The object was to take advantage of the ore structure and conditions, and achieve increased productivity. This paper outlines the design, operation and economics of three areas which utilized blasthole stoping. The 108areafrom 2300 level to 1500level was converted from cut-and-fill to sublevel blasthole stoping based on a block mining-and-filling sequence. The second area, the crown pillar of 110 mechanized cut-and-fill stope below 500 level, was recovered using horizontal rings drilled from raises within the ore zone. The third area, the 83 orebody from 1300 level to 1100 level, used the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method with large-diameter blastholes. Blasthole stoping has increased productivity and improved operating conditions.

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 60,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill. This paper will highlight the impact of a pre-detox thickener on the cyanide consumption in a gold leach/CIP circuit. While the pre-detox thickener was built with the intention to reduce the cyanide consumption, the opposite effect was observed when the thickener was put temporarily offline. It will show how the re-circulation of a dilute stream of cyanide into the grinding circuit, increases the overall slurry temperature and by the same effect, increases the dissolved copper concentration in the leaching circuit which subsequently increases the cyanide consumption.INTRODUCTION The processing plant is using a conventional gravity, cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processing facility currently operating at approximately 60,000 mtpd. The comminution process is based on two parallel SABC lines, each fed from an individual reclaim tunnel. Cyclone overflow from the two ball mill circuits is directed to the pre-leach thickener. The thickener underflow is distributed to two (4) parallel leach trains of 5 tanks each, each leach train providing 29 hours of leaching retention time. After leaching, the gold in solution is recovered in a carrousel CIP circuit consisting of two (2) parallel leach trains. Tails from each CIP circuit are combined and sent to a pre-detox thickener to recover as much cyanide solution as is economically practical before being diluted and fed to a cyanide destruction system. The detoxified tailings are sent to the Tailing Management Area (TMA) for settling and retention. The excess water from the TMA is reclaimed and recycled back to the processing plant. The pre-detox thickener is designed to thicken the leach tails slurry to 64% solids with the overflow being recycled to the grinding circuit. It is estimated that the pre-detox thickener will recover 60% of the cyanide in the CIP discharge solution. It is also designed to reduce the SO2 consumption by diluting the thickener U/F to 50% solid using the tailing pond reclaim water which has very little cyanide content."

Orovalle Minerals S. L. operates a copper/gold mine in the Asturias region of northern Spain, with the operation dating back to December 1997. The feed to the El Valle mill, consisting of oxide/sulphide (skarn) mineralization, is highly variable, even on a shift by shift basis and presents challenges to the mill operating staff on a daily basis. The mineralogical characteristics of the ore are quite complex with copper present as native copper and sulphides as well as copper minerals with deleterious elements. Gold is present as native gold and electrum. The mill circuit includes SAG/ball mill grinding, gravity recovery of native copper and gold, flotation of copper concentrate, carbon-in-leach gold recovery and SO2/air cyanide destruction. The paper will provide a description of the different unit operations and present operating data of the mill operation.

Moisture effect has been studied for the CO oxidation over Au/TiO2, Au/Al2O3 and Au/SiO2, in the range of H2O concentration over four orders of magnitude. It has been found that the catalytic activity is generally enhanced by moisture in the reactant gas. The enhancement is as large as two orders of magnitude. Response to the moisture concentration, however, depends on the support oxide, indicating different contributions of the support to the reaction steps. The moisture effect is reversible and the activity is mainly determined by the amount of moisture absorbed by the catalyst. The apparent activation energies are not significantly influenced by moisture for Au/TiO2 and Au/Al2O3. On the contrary, non-uniform conversion curves versus temperature observed for Au/SiO2 are drastically changed, which indicates that the reaction over Au/SiO2 does not take place at low temperatures without moisture. The moisture effect may be probably attributed to the decomposition of carbonate species accumulated during the reaction, while the ?OH group might directly participate in the reaction pathways as a promoter.

ABSTRACT The effect of a low4emperature stress relief at 232.2°C. (450°?F.) on the fatigue properties of shot-peened SAE. 1080 steel has been investigated. Specimens of the steel were first annealed. One half of the steel bars were then normalized and the other half were water-quenched and drawn. Specimens of the steel with each heat treatment were tested in tensile, notched bar impact, and fatigue. The fatigue specimens were test in air and water in R. R. Moore high-speed rotating bending machines in the following conditions: un-peened, peened, and peened-and stress-relieved at 232.2°C. ( 450°F.) The 'endurance life' and fatigue properties of specimens given a stress relief heat treatment after shot peening were superior to those of specimens given a smooth machine finish or shot peened. INTRODUCTION THIS investigation was initiated to obtain preliminary information on the effect on the fatigue resistance of shot peening the machined surface of a high-carbon steel similar in composition to that used in hollow drill steel. The data obtained in this investigation could be applied in analysing the application of shot peening hollow drill steel shanks. It is well known that the 'endurance life' and fatigue limits of steel are greatly ?improved by shot peening. References to this in the literature are numerous.

"After an extensive period of University research and field trials, large scale reclamation of the Waite Amulet tailings discharge areas commenced in the spring of 1978. The Noranda program consists principally of sampling the complete dam to determine the vegetation potential of the various areas, addition of the required amelioration materials, and the use of good agricultural practices. This paper describes the development work that led to the establishment of the Noranda-Guelph Contract and the subsequent findings concerning the revegetation of tailings dams. Current revegetation procedures are presented. INTRODUCTIONThe Amulet Mine Ltd. was staked in 1924 and by 1930 had constructed a small 300 ton per day flotation plant. During the late twenties and early thirties, Noranda Mines Ltd. increased its equity in the company to gain a sixty percent share of this small mine. In 1933 the mine was amalgamated with another small producer, the Waite Ackerman Montgomery Mine Ltd., which was more than eighty per cent controlled by Noranda to form the Waite Amulet Mines Ltd.An interesting historical side point to the story of the Waite Ackerman Montgomery property is that a concentrator was never constructed. In fact, the first ore to go through the Horne mill of Noranda Mines Ltd., built in 1928, was not from the famous upper H and L ore bodies but custom shipments from the Waite."

The measurement of dust concentration in Ontario mines since 1926 has been accomplished by konimetry, based on South African experience and methods. The introduction of a voluntary program of semi-annual surveys of air conditions at all operations throughout Ontario mines created a need for an instrument that would assess konimeter spots rapidly and accurately. The development of the Electronic Scanner, it is felt, answers this need. A program whereby all konimeter spot samples taken at Ontario mines will be counted at the MAP AO field offices in North Bay is described.

The western part of the Hauy Formation of the Opemisca Group, occurring near the town of Chapais, is described in this paper. As it has been defined previously, the Formation is composed of a succession of subaerial andesi tic lava flows with some interbedded proximal volcaniclastic sediments. Towards the East, these volcanics yield to coarse grained fluviatile sediments having similar composition to the interbedded lavas. Further east, the composition of these sediments is more arkosic with dioritic and tonalitic fragments. It is proposed that these arkosic sediments are a part of the Stella Formation which has been described by Dimroth et al. (1982).

Efforts were made to develop newer alloys without selenium for plumbing applications. Recently a new copper alloy, C89836, was introduced. "The wet part of the Hollinger mill is housed in two buildings, the grinding plant and the treatment plant. In the grinding plant there are four 7xl5 ball mills which grind the ore to 60 per cent through 200 mesh. There is also one 7xl5 ball mill which grinds table concentrate to 9 5 per cent through 200 mesh.The primary classifier overflow is pumped to the treatment plant where it passes over shaking tables, producing a concentrate and a tail. The concentrate pulp is pumped to the grinding plant for secondary grinding. The secondary classifier overflow is pumped back to the treatment plant where it is thickened in two 40xl 5 tray thickeners and agitated in four 20x24 mechanical agitators arranged in series of two (with 2 spares).The table tail pulp is thickened in nine primary 40xl5 tray thickeners (with 2 spares). The thickened table tail pulp and the concentrate agitator discharge pulp are mixed and pumped to four rows of 15x45 pachuca agitators, arranged in series of five tanks.The pachuca discharge pulp is divided. The smaller part goes to two rows of 3-step decantation using 40xl5 tray thickeners (with 2 spare rows). The larger part goes to six 14xl6 drum filters. The repulped primary filter cake and the thickened pulp discharged from the decantation rows are fed to eight 14xl6 drum filters. The secondary filter cake is mixed with water and pumped to the tailing line."

Podsol soil horizons developed on Pleistocene glacial sediments overlying the Coronation Mine orebody were analyzed for copper and zinc spectro-photometrically, using biquinoline-isoamyl alcohol and dithizone carbon tetrachloride reagents. Copper and zinc are concentrated in the A. and C horizons, whereas the A1, A2 and B horizons are leached. Of economic significance is the fact that the C horizon contains a copper anomaly, in excess of 100 times back-ground, directly over the orebody. Due to the erratic distribution of high copper concentrations in the Ao horizon with respect to the orebody, that horizon is not considered as a reliable prospecting datum. U NDER certain conditions, metallic ore deposits are accompanied by primary halos of trace elements in unweathered rock surrounding the orebodies or by secondary halos in weathered rock, alluvium, soil, or vegetation above or near the mineralized zones. Where such halos occur, chemical analysis, as applied to the detection of trace elements, is a valuable prospecting aid, permitting the detection of mineralization of possible economic value.

Copper Mountain is the third largest copper mine in British Columbia, and is now producing close to 20 million pounds of copper per year, with which is recovered also 4,000 ounces of gold and. 13,800 ounces of silver. After a long and checkered career, during which the ownership and management changed several times, this deposit finally came into the possession of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company in 1923. It was not, however, until the end of 1925 that the mine, under the management of Charles Bocking and C. H. Smith, was successfully placed on a basis of profitable production. It is a low-grade deposit of the contact-metamorphic type, with refractory ores consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite in a gangue of altered andesitic and basaltic breccia. The ore is concentrated to a product carrying over 30 percent copper, which is smelted in Tacoma. The deposit is 12 miles south of the town of Princeton, which is on the Kettle Valley railway, 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International Boundary line. Princeton is served also by a branch of the Great Northern railway, which leads clown the Similkameen, Okanagan, and Columbia valleys. Copper Mountain mine and camp are connected to Princeton by a good mo tor road extending up Wolf Creek valley, while the haulage level of the mine, which emerges on the steep side of the Similkameen valley 1,000 feet below the camp, is connected with Princeton by a spur of the Kettle Valley railway leading up the Similkameen canyon and passing en route through Allenby, where the concentrator is situated.

ALBERTA has been generously endowed with oil, natural gas, coal and water power, thus giving power producers a wide choice in the type of plant and fuel which can be used. Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. Power is fed into a 5,100-mile high-voltage transmission grid from eleven hydroelectric plants and from the Wabamun steam electric plant. "Grinding mills are infamous for their extremely low energy efficiency. This paper reports the results of an investigation that characterized energy outputs in industrial grinding mill circuits. It identifies and discusses the potential for recovering energy from grinding circuits. Agnico-Eagle Goldex Division, Mine Canadian Malartic, and New Gold New Afton Mine participated in the study by providing operating data for three semi-autogenous grinding mills and four ball mills. Results showed that on average, 79% of the supplied electrical energy was converted to heat absorbed by the slurry, 8% was lost through the drive system, and approximately 2% was transmitted to the ambient air. Only 9% of the input energy was actually used for grinding. The remaining 91%—wasted as heat—could potentially be recovered using suitable technologies or integrated energy management systems. La mine Goldex d’Agnico Eagle, Mine Canadian Malartic et la mine New Afton de New Gold ont participé à l’étude en fournissant des données de fonctionnement pour trois broyeurs semi-autogènes et quatre broyeurs à boulets. Elemental sulphur occurs as aformational sedimentary deposit in Upper Devonian Wabamun evaporites near Coronation, Alberta. The deposit developed in a stratigraphic jacies-change lrap; it is assumed that petroleum reacted with anhydrite to form sulphur, calcite, hydrogen sulphide and other reaction products. The deposit contains about 362,800 tonnes of sulphur and lies at a depth of 1200 m. The Coronation deposit is expected to be geologically typical of such other native sulphur deposits as may be found in Wabamun Group sediments. Widespread sour gas sulphur production f rom the Wabamun suggests the possibility that additional native sulphur deposits will ·be found.

The Eastern Townships and Asbestos Hill areas are the current asbestos-producing districts of Quebec. Mining in the two areas began in the /are 1870s and 1972 respectively. Production from the Eastern Townships is derived from rhe Serpentine Zone of ulrramafic rocks, specifically from basal serpentinized peridotite members of what are now considered to be allochrhonous ophiolitic material that was abducted onto the Early Ordovician continental margin. From south west to northeast, the rhree allochthonous asbestos-producing sections of the Serpentine Zone are designated the Asbestos Ophiolite Complex, the Thetford Mines Ophiolite Complex and the Pennington Dyke; the Pennington Dyke is considered to represent a segment of serpentinized Alpine peridotire that was fragmenred from a larger, more complete ophiolire complex. The Asbesros Hill deposir on the Ungava Peninsula lies in what apparenrly is an inrrusive sill found wirhin rhe Chukorar Group, the uppermosr group of Precambrian-aged Cape SmithWakeham Bay Belr of volcanic-sedimentary rocks.

This work concerns the identification of weak zones in the structure of a rock mass endangered by outburst of gases and rocks in the Rudna copper ore mine at greater depths (approximately 1200 m). A special methodology has been undertaken for the recognition of that threat in the wake of an outburst in the mine in 2009. No similar phenomena have been previously recorded in KGHM Polska Miedz copper ore mines. The research described in this paper was carried out in the new part of the deposit prepared for mining. Geophysical methods were used: seismic tomography and borehole ground penetrating radar (BGPR), along with particular identifications using geological engineering methods. In the researched area, Permian layers of sandstone and shale clay (Weissliegendes formation) and of Zechstein dolomite (top of Rotliegend formation) and anhydrite occur in the copper ore deposit. The rock layers are characterized by variable thickness and intensity of mineralization, varying internal structure, and local fracturing containing different gases and water. It is assumed that accumulation of gases occurs in the tectonically fractured dolomite. The study was focused on the recognition of the structure and properties of the dolomite layer lying directly within the roof of excavations. The first tests were performed with seismic tomography for the recognition of anomalous changes in the elastic properties of the rock mass. The results of these studies were used to design a control borehole for a detailed geological engineering assessment and BGPR surveys with 100MHz antennas. Seismic tomography enabled the identification of changes in Pwave and S-wave velocity, the Vp/Vs ratio, dynamic Poisson&apos;s ratio and dynamic Young&apos;s modulus. It was clear that seismic anomalies required verification by other methods. The BGPR survey was performed in a specially designed borehole, passing through the selected seismic anomalies. While the borehole was being drilled, the outflow of gases was identified, with varying amounts of CH4, CO2, and H2S detected, as well as water outflow. The results of BGPR confirmed the location of a reservoir of water and gases, about 30 m in length, found in layer of dolomite. The direct cause of the BGPR anomaly was assumed to be intensive fracturing, a greater content of clay material in the dolomite, and the presence of water in the fractured zone. The BGPR image was correlated with information on lithology, fracturing based on the RQD index and additional information acquired during drilling about water and gases surveys and other symptoms. The achieved results also showed a very strong correlation between the location of the zone containing gases and water and the anomalous S-wave velocity and field of dynamic Poisson?s ratio, and to a lesser extent other seismic parameters. It was found that the other measured seismic anomalies may be of the same nature as those identified in the control borehole and accordingly will require the implementation of detailed identification. The performed tests have also shown the usefulness of geophysical methods to identify geodynamic hazards under the geological and mining conditions of the copper ore deposit in the Rudna mine.

Introduction The International Nickel Company have been pioneers in mine rescue work in Ontario. Following the fire in the Hollinger mine in the spring of 1928, the Company purchased ten self-contained oxygen breathing outfits, ten all-service gas masks, an oxygen high-pressure pump, life line, inhalator, ten cap-lamps with batteries, and a complete stock of spare and accessory parts. An instructor from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, came to the Creighton mine for one week and trained twenty men in the use and limitations of all equipment. Monthly training courses were commenced in the fall, and have continued to the present time. Of the original twenty men trained, ten are still on the Creighton mine rescue teams. In the meantime, and as an aftermath of the Hollinger fire, the Work-men&apos;s Compensation Board of Ontario and the Ontario Department of Mines established a central mine rescue station at Timmins. This was completed in the spring of 1930. It was then decided, in view of the great expansion in mine development in the Sudbury district, to build and equip a similar station to serve all the mines there, namely, Creighton, Frood, Garson, Falconbridge, Sudbury Basin, and Errington. An extensive survey was made and a central location selected opposite the Frood mine. The International Nickel Company donated a site, and the station was completed in the fall of 1930. The station is a two-storey brick building, 27 ft. by 47 ft., with a large garage adjoining it. The ground floor is used for equipment and for training the crews. On the second floor are living quarters for the superintendent and his family. The garage houses a closed truck, in which all necessary equipment can be taken to any desired point for training purposes or for actual mine rescue work, if and when necessary. The garage is also used as a gas room, where the men are trained in an irrespirable atmosphere. A gas-tight observation window between it and the training room enables the superintendent to see and direct the men undergoing training, weight exercisers and other devices being used.

"Colloidal silica in Key Lake’s Solvent Extraction (SX) feed solutions has presented an operational problem for the mill throughout its history. The colloidal silica stabilizes aqueous continuous emulsions, resulting in elevated solvent losses and operational downtime. Through the years, many attempts have been made to solve this problem, but no viable solutions were found. By revisiting an idea dating back to the 1979 feasibility study and re-evaluating it under current operating conditions, a practical solution was achieved. This paper discusses Key Lake’s history around colloidal silica removal, starting with coagulation using a polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO), and ending with coagulation using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. The results of a mill trial using POLYSIL® RM1250 introduced at doses up to 300 ppm into the counter current decantation (CCD) circuit to clarify SX feed solutions are discussed with a focus on the benefits to SX.INTRODUCTION Colloidal silica has historically been a significant operational problem in the Key Lake mill. Silica originates from clays in the ore as well as concrete backfill intermixed with the ore resulting from the mining method used at Key Lake’s ore source, the McArthur River mine. The silica is dissolved as silicic acid into solution in the mill’s sulphuric acid leaching circuit. Once in solution, silicic acid polymerizes (Hearn, Smethurst, & Boskovic, 2016) forming a fine suspension of stable colloidal particles.
