Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce wrought microstructures at the surface of sand-cast aerospace grade magnesium alloy ZE41A-T5. It is found that the microstructure is significantly refined in the stir zone and the flow arm. The stir zone is largely comprised of equiaxed magnesium grains of approximately 4.5 pm compared with about 50 µm in the base cast material. In the stir zone, however, abnormal growth of some grains is also observed. Vickers microindentation hardness tests indicated that the stir zone experiences some increases in hardness. Single surface passes with low distortion, lack of pores and cracks were successfully obtained indicating the great potential of the FSP technique for modifying, improving and repairing magnesium alloy castings. This will probably open new opportunities to apply magnesium alloys in aerospace industry.

It is recognized that within life cycle assessment that the eco-toxicity potentials (TPs) derived for metals require additional research to improve their reliability. Current models used to develop TPs do not include important fate process for metals such as speciation and bioavailability. Toxicity potentials are standard values used in LCA to enable a comparison of potential toxic impacts between substances. Huijbrechts (2001) calculated toxicity potentials for 181 substances utilizing the USES model for six impact categories, i.e. freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity, freshwater sediment ecotoxicity, marine sediment ecotoxicity, terrestrial ecotoxicity and human toxicity (not considered here). Marine ecotox potential for metals is typically high using this approach, whereas most open ocean metal concentrations are very low. A sensitivity analysis of the USES-LCA model was undertaken using copper as an example. Results indicate: fate processes on the global scale are driving the marine water and sediment TPs for copper most; the second most important fate parameter is sedimentation from the water and burial in deep sediment layers; inclusion of speciation and bio-availability processes would be very beneficial; more accurate estimates of input parameters should be used, and the PNECwater and PNECsediment and all partition coefficients for metals should be updated in the model.

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

The bionic non-smooth surface has the characteristics of anti-wear, and reducing resistance. Based on bionic non-smooth surface?s characteristics, a bionic drill bit was developed. When the bionic drill bit is used, a bionic non-smooth surface forms on the crown of bionic drill bit. This surface can be used to extend the life of drill bit and improve drill efficiency. The bionic unit diameter and arrangement were researched in this paper to determine the optimal bionic non-smooth surface for further improving the life and efficiency of drill bit. Four bionic samples having the same structure size, materials and arrangement were designed and manufactured. After being sintered, the abrasion ratios of the four bionic samples were tested, and the results show that the abrasion ratio of Nos. 3 and 2 were similar (only 2% difference) and higher than that of No. 1 and 4. Therefore, the optimal diameter of bionic unit is 1.5 and 2.0 mm. Small diameter bionic drill bits were designed and manufactured, and tested in the laboratory. The results show that not all bionic structure bodies are better than normal diamond bits, except the bionic unit arranged in a reasonable range. When the angle was 24° and 30°, the arrangement of bionic unit were more reasonable, which shows the superiority of the bionic coupling bit.

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. Le présent article traite de ces questions, discute de la géologie du manteau, des principales roches-mères des diamants et de l’impact des processus dans le manteau, compare les propriétés et les caractéristiques des micro- et des macrodiamants et définit les étapes pour identifier et mitiger le risque de résorption des diamants et son impact sur la relation entre la taille et la qualité des diamants."

"Construction, equipping and planned operation of a new laboratory for engineering-teaching and research in coal and mineral processing is described. This facility will provide approximately 1860 m2 (20,000 ft. 2 ) of laboratory space with nearly half devoted to a new venture in coal preparation. Two high-bay, overhead crane-accessed areas will accommodate major unit operations for each of the ""coal"" and ""mineral"" laboratories. COAL PREPARATION FACILITIES:The coal facility provides three main functional areas:(1) Sample preparation (drying, blending, crushing, screening) and sink-float washability testing.(2) Unit operations U1igh-bay, serviced by crane).(3) Analytical laboratories.(l) Sample Preparation and Sink-Float TestingBreaking or comminution of coal will be accomplished using a rolls crusher, a hammer mill, a jaw crusher, or a pulverizer. Capacity to prepare coal at rates of up to approximately 4 tph will be provided by some of these units. Large diameter (~0.5m) baths of heavy organic liquids will be available for sink-float washability tests on coal samples of several kg. Particle sizes of up to 25 mm can be tested in these baths. Smaller scale washability tests on finer samples will be accelerated by centrifuges."

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. Cependant, les données de MEGATEMII démontrent que le dépôt de New Insco a une haute valeur de la constante de décroissance, ce qui reflète une plus forte conductivité. Reducing agents can be applied to leach metal values from natural and secondary resources such as laterite ores and deep sea manganese nodules and recycled materials such as spent batteries / catalysts which contain high-valent metal oxides of manganese, cobalt and iron. Selective leaching of some metals can be achieved by selecting conditions to control the saturated solubility and dissolution rates of metals from oxides or mixed metal/oxide matrices. The leaching results are rationalized on the basis of chemical species, Eh-pH diagrams and heterogeneous kinetic models. The role of reducing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, sulfur dioxide and iron(II) sulphate, in acid, alkali and in the presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia for the improvement of the leaching of metal oxides and metals is discussed. Previous studies on acid leaching of metals from nickel laterites, manganese nodules and spent catalysts/batteries in the absence or presence of reducing agents show that the rate controlling step involves the diffusion of protons through a thickening product layer on the particle being leached. It is shown that the leaching of nickel and cobalt from manganese nodules and zinc-carbon batteries in ammoniacal sulphur dioxide solutions also obey shrinking core kinetics.

Our recent studies revealed that the sulfide minerals in contact with water during grinding produced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) where the amount of H2O2 production by the minerals found to be in the order of pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. The H2O2 effect on the oxidation of pulp components and its influence on the concentrate grade and recovery in flotation have been studied and the results have been presented and discussed in this paper. Studies have also been carried out to build correlation between percentage of pyrite in the concentrate, grinding conditions and concentration of OH•/H2O2 in the pulp and as well of controlling the formation of these species through known chemical means for depressing the generation of the oxidant. Flotation tests using a complex sulfide ore with the same reagent scheme that is being used at Boliden concentrator in Sweden but with the addition of i) collector and depressant, ii) Na2S reductant and iii) inorganic (EDTA) and organic (TETA) surface modifiers, during grinding stage have been performed to judge the beneficial or detrimental role of H2O2 on the selective flotation of sulfides. The results demonstrate that the selectivity of metal sulfides against pyrite increases with increasing generation of H2O2 in the pulp liquid. H2O2 is also found to be a better oxidant in chalcopyrite-galena flotation separation than the commonly used K2Cr2O7.

THE bituminous sand of northern Alberta has already an extensive literature, and most of the reports dealing with the subject are still available (see Selected Bibliography at end of paper). A phenomenon so striking and, as regards its extent, so unique, as the deposit in the vicinity of McMurray settlement could not fail to attract the notice of the early explorers, and we find references to it as far back as the latter part of the eighteenth century. However, scarcely a thought had been bestowed upon the possible economic value of minerals in the the remote northern parts of Canada before the second decade of the present century, and practically no detailed mapping had been done north of the town of Athabaska. The late Wm. Ogilvie made a track survey of Athabaska river in 1884, and surveys of certain lines-including the 23rd base line-had been completed by 1911. Between this base line and lake Athabaska, nothing had been attempted. Actually, no definite information at all was available regarding the character and extent of the bituminous sand when, in the earl y summer of 1913, a reconnaissance party set out from Athabaska for McMurray. At that period, the journey was made in summer by scow or canoe. No telegraph line had been laid, and a casual mail service by canoe or dog team once in three months formed the only means of communication with the outside world. The investigation has begun by the Mines Branch was continued during several subsequent years. The sand deposits were studied and sampled, the bi rumen was extracted from the sand and studied chemically and physically, and the economic significance of the deposit was given exhaustive study.

Metal losses in discard slag are the main factor determining overall recovery. The metals are present both in dissolved form and as matte or metallic inclusions, varying in size from 2 to 1000 µm. Pyrometallurgical slag cleaning usually consists of heating the slag, reduction of oxides and settling of matte/metal droplets. Heating the slag decreases viscosity and accelerates reactions. Reduction of magnetite liberates inclusions and facilitates co-reduction of dissolved metal oxides. A significant amount of the matte and metal is present as very fine metallic inclusions, too small for settling. The coalescence of these matte or metal inclusions is required to remove them from the slag. The developed new concept of slag cleaning combines DC furnace technology with an extra magnetic field for vigorous slag stirring, enhancing mass transfer to the reductant surface, accelerating the rate of reduction, and destabilizing the emulsion of matte or metal inclusions. Intensive slag stirring increases the probability of collision of inclusions, will accelerate their growth and will therefore improve settling. The process is carried out in a patented DC channel furnace, where the liquid metal or matte layer acts as a cathode and the floating coke bed on the slag surface is the anode. In the first part of the furnace, a superimposed magnetic field induces a Lorentz's force causing the slag to start an intensive circular motion. The next furnace zone does not experience any stirring and is dedicated for quiet sedimentation of the inclusions. A mathematical model of gravitational coalescence combined with forced slag motion showed the possibilities of effective removal of copper matte inclusions. The results of laboratory pilot scale tests of continuous slag cleaning showed fast slag reduction and confirmed the improved matte removal from the slag. Conceptual analysis shows the potential use of the technology in various other non-ferrous industries, like for example nickel plants. It is also possible to use this technique batch wise.

Transportation of fluid and slurry (fluid and solid particle mixtures) in a pipe and annulus space has been the focus of numerous studies. There are different parameters to be considered when studying slurry transportation. These include slurry velocity or flow rates; fluid properties such as density and rheology; and solid particle properties including concentration, density, shape and size. Also the angle of the flow conduit, rotation of the pipe and possible eccentricity of the annulus are other factors which influence slurry transport characteristics. Although a number of analytical, numerical and empirical equations as well as numerical simulations have been developed for studying the flow and slurry transport characteristics, the results need to be validated against either field or lab data. As performing field tests is costly and time consuming, conducting simulations at the laboratory scale appears as a good alternative. Different flow loops have been designed to study slurry transport behaviour in different science and engineering disciplines including oil and gas and mining. However, few of these consider, in particular, cuttings transportation in small size annulus space. The flow characteristics appear to be very different when slurry travels within a small size annulus, in particular when the fluid velocity is high. In this study, a review of some of the existing slurry flow loops will be conducted. Then the details of a slurry loop, which has been designed and commissioned for the purpose of studying cuttings transport in a small size annulus space for applications in drilling mineral exploration wells using coil tube technology, will be presented.

"The Scully Mine deposit lies within the group of metasediments that together comprise the rocks of the Labrador Trough. The ore itself still retains the bedding characteristics of the parent rocks and on this basis has been divided into three main members, namely: Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper and Lower both show many of the bedding characteristics of the cherty taconites of the northern U.S.A.; the Middle member is a coarse-grained friable specularite rock. The ore minerals are hematite (normally present in the specular variety) and magnetite, although the latter rarely occurs in concentrations greater than 20 per cent. Gangue minerals are quartz and the hydrated iron oxides. Manganese oxides also occur as accessory minerals. The outcrop area of the orebody is in excess of 2 square miles, displaying a complex pattern of faulting and folding, which has been formed as a result of at least two orogenic periods."

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. New "clean technologies" to treat mining and metallurgical effluents containing dissolved metals have been successfully applied at mine sites in North America and Asia, treating water flows up to 24,000 m3/day. These clean technologies offer significant benefits compared to conventional alternatives and provide a sustainable solution that eliminates residual waste sludge, improves water conservation, generates revenues from wastewater, and delivers overall improvements to the environment. This paper will profile these technologies, and provide best practice case study examples of their application at mining operations, including data for water chemistry, flows, water quality, capital and operating costs, and life cycle costs of treatment.

PROGRESSIVE industrial organizations have recognized the importance of maintaining an adequate reference library of volumes covering all phases of their particular branch of industry, but it has been the experience of the writer that few engineers know how to use to the best advantage this store of extremely -valuable information which has been accumulated for their service. Nor does the average engineer appreciate the fact that it is only through the current technical literature that he can keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering. The present-day ramifications of the engineering field are of such wide scope that the human mind is not capable of storing away more than a small fraction of the information available on any particular topie; yet, from time ? to time, such information would prove invaluable. An engineer can know intimately only a small part of his own branch of engineering; but he cannot afford to neglect to take the fullest possible advantage of all that is already known in his own particular field. Technical information may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: (1) by enquiring of the individual who knows; (2) by performing the experimental investigations necessary to ascertain the facts; (3) by consulting the technical literature, where a record may be found of the work of others. This last method is the one we wish to examine. Our main consideration is the question of how to use the library, but first it is necessary to give some attention to the kind of enquiries one takes to the library, and to the nature of the sources of information available.

Introduction The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B. C., Limited, is located in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia, on Cadwallader creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. Milling by the present Company was commenced in 1924, a small amalgamation plant, consisting of a crusher, Bryan mill, and plates being operated until 1928. Tailing from this plant was impounded and later treated in the 100-ton continuous counter-current decantation cyanide plant which was erected during 1927-28 and placed in operation during May of 1928. A second cyanide plant, employing continuous counter-current decantation, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons, has been erected during the past few months and was put into operation during September of the present year. The ultimate capacity of the combined units of the present mill has not been determined, but it is expected to be much in excess of the rated capacity. The Ore The ore, as received at the mill, consists chiefly of quartz carrying free gold, with small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite in evidence, though probably amounting to less than one per cent of the total. Some gold is very closely associated with the sulphides. The country rock is a basic igneous rock, probably an augite diorite. Near the vein it is highly altered to sericite, which slimes readily on grinding, and does not settle very well. The quartz is of two types, clear and ribbon. In the latter, the ribbons, which are not much thicker than paper, consist of shattered sulphides. In crushing this ribbon quartz, breakage is often along the streaks, exposing these shattered faces to advantage in subsequent treatment. While gold is the metal for which the ore is mined, some silver is also present and is paid for by the mint. It is, however, unimportant from a commercial viewpoint. From the standpoint of crushing and grinding, the ore might be termed 'medium 'hard'.
