Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

Although auriferous beach and fore-dune sands at Five Mile Beach south of Okarito township had been intensively mined by hand and primative mechanical methods drilling of the sandspit by the Gold Development Corporation in 1929 indicated that the grade and quantity of undisturbed black and grey sand below the water table was sufficient to support a mining operation. Worked sand above the water table also contained fair prospects. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co Ltd, was formed and an hydraulically powered, bucket ladder, sluice box dredge built. In 13 years of operation (1931 - 1943) the dredge returned 556.39 kg (17 890 oz) of gold at a recovered grade of 225.4 mg/m3. A total of ú42 000 was distributed as dividends on the ú30 000 capital investment. Recent drill and bulk sampling at the northern end of the beach has confirmed that reworking of the historic tailings by a modern gravity recovery plant would not be economic.

A new porphyry copper gold district has been discovered at Goonumbla near Parkes in central New South Wales. Endeavour 26 North is the largest deposit known to date with a possible resource of 166.4 million tonnes at 0.74% copper, 0.12g/tonne gold and 1.7g/tonne silver, using a cut-off grade 0.3% copper. Mineralisation is primarily bornite in the higher grade zones and chalcopyrite in the peripheral lower grade zones. Most of the copper, gold mineralisation is associated with potassic alteration. Two mineralised quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive stages have been identified and these are related at depth to a large monz- onite stock which may have been the source of some of the mineralisation. On the basis of detailed paragenesis studies, the potassic zone can be divided into three symmetric subzones. The low grade inner potassium feldspar subzone is confined to the later intrusive porphyry. The outer potassium feldspar subzone is the most highly mineralised alteration halo due to the focussed superimposition of two hydrothermal cycles which have overprinted intrusive and volcanic rocks. The fringing biotite potassium feldspar subzone reveals alteration minerals which are developed early in the paragenesis. Fracture controlled quartz sericite alteration with low sulphide content, fringes and, in part overprints the potassic zone. The restricted pipe-like nature of the alteration zones and related mineralisation suggests that Endeavour 26 North is repres- entative of a multiphase focussed porphyry copper gold system.

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

The exploitation of primary ores using cave mining caused new challenges at the El Teniente mine that required changes to a number of conventional cave mining practices. For example, in the 1970s and 1980s, panel caving was introduced to manage certain geotechnical and operational conditions. Today, El Teniente mine is facing new challenges associated with deep cave mining and establishing its New Mine Level (NML) project, which is located 240 m below the Esmeralda operating cave.The engineering and development phases for this new project have been largely based on experience and lessons learned throughout the history of primary ore exploitation at El Teniente mine, particularly knowledge about seismicity control, the management of collapses and operational practices. For example, previous experience demonstrated that seismicity could be managed by preconditioning using large-scale hydraulic fracturing (HF). HF has been systematically applied in the column of ore above the undercut planned for the NML project and below the production or extraction level, where the main ventilation and haulage infrastructure are to be located.This paper discusses how this has been achieved and is based on previous experience of preconditioning using HF, which has been applied in the selection and management of exploitation techniques and associated planning strategies and design parameters for the NML project.CITATION:Pardo, C and Rojas, E, 2016. The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

Development of New Comminution Testing Methodologies for Geometallurgical Mapping of Ore Hardness and Throughput The emerging discipline of 'geometallurgy' is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Constrained sampling that reflects and defines inherent ore body variability is a key geometallurgical requirement. This requires use of larger numbers of low-cost physical testing which can be applied to small sample volumes suitable for defining natural variability. The AMIRA P843 'GeMIII' project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major industry-supported research initiative designed to develop new tools, methods and protocols to support geometallurgical integration. As part of this integrated research a new more rapid low-cost comminution test (GeM Comminution index) has been developed which can be employed as a front line tool for geometallurgical mapping purposes and predictive throughput modelling. The test has been designed to be inserted into routine assay sample preparation and is based on constrained jaw crushing protocols linked to analysis of resultant size distributions. Extensive validation and modelling has shown the GeM Comminution Index (Ci) is correlated with the Drop Weight index A*b and Bond Mill Work Index (BMWi). Large scale trials have been conducted within a commercial assay laboratory to demonstrate and optimise incorporation of the Ci test into routine sample preparation protocols. While Ci based estimates of A*b and BMWi are not as precise compared to larger volume more expensive test-work, the ability to undertake large numbers of tests typically in a systematic down-hole manner, provides a high level of data support through adjacency. A Ci based approach is highly suitable for variability mapping, domaining and selecting large composite samples for more precise testing. Within the context of the AMIRA P843 project this forms part of an integrated work flow designed to support geometallurgical integration. The development of a comminution test linked to routine assay sample preparation represents significant value adding to a process that in most cases is already going to be carried out. The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.
