The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 µm in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some inillioils of tons of rich, copper-gold ore, averaging about 45% to 50% silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux.were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap, limestone, were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting operations started, with one' furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore fro:m. the mine, containing very little silica. When the second, furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from, small aeposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Eabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required viz, 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

Building the Unified Comminution Model The Unified Comminution Model (UCM) was formulated with the vision of bringing all comminution models onto a common base. The structure of the model relies on knowledge of the mechanical environment in the comminution devices to predict the modes and rates of collision in a device. A detailed understanding of the breakage modes and an ability to correctly test these modes for the ores in question is then required to feed into the UCM. A model structure has been developed that has the capability of dealing with multiple modes of breakage, such as low energy impact surface damage, chipping, sliding abrasion, cumulative impact body breakage and the transition of rock between modes. A critical review is presented on the shortcomings and limitations of utilising the discrete element method (DEM) to provide the mechanical environments. The assumptions and applicability of utilising DEM in milling models are presented and proposed routes to building a realistic mechanistic model are proposed. Based on this more realistic measures of collision energy have been derived from the DEM simulations, which better mimic the real breakage tests. Generic forms of the collision energy distributions have been observed and developed into functional forms for use in the simulation environment. The method of application of this model to a pilot SAG mill is presented.

Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. At the end of the recent war, reports became available from Europe of the use of tungsten-carbide inserts in percussion rockdrill bits. These bits were used with small size rockdrills, so that the only advantage gained from the use of the harder, abrasion resistant, tungsten-carbide appears to have been the greater life of the bit. Larger machines, such as used in Australia in conventional practice, had to be discarded to protect the relatively brittle tungstencarbide inserts and the vulnerable bonding with the bit body.As it had been found in machine shop practice that some grades of tungsten-carbide had been produced with considerably improved toughness, it was decided by Gold Mines of Australia Ltd. that drilling practice with tungstencarbide bits warranted detailed examination under Australian conditions, and that drilling tests should be undertaken at Morning Star (G.M.A.) Mines N.L., for which it acts as General Manager and Consultant.These investigations progressed through three stages:1. Uranium ore at Sleisbeck, N.T., occurs as lenticular bodies associated with zones of bleached carbonized schists lying between walls of closely folded quartzite. The ore consists mainly of uranium micas with Borne pitchblende.INTRODUCTIONThe Sleisbeck uranium prospect is about 70 miles E. of Pine Creek, and 160 miles S.E. of Darwin (Fig. 1). The prospect consists of a well-defined, E.-W. trending line of hills, about I! miles long. The line is composed of 3 major hills called the Eastern, Central and Western hills, with minor interconnecting hills and outcrops (Fig. 2).

Olympic Dam has been investigating mine design options for the South Mine Area (SMA), which will continue using the existing sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method. The SMA is an undeveloped mining area, located south of the existing underground mining areas currently in production at Olympic Dam. The SMA study reached the stage where geotechnical inputs were required for stope design, infrastructure location and ground support forecasts. A large database of geotechnical data was collected to inform open pit designs for the ODX (Olympic Dam expansion) project (resulting from 659 drill holes). This geotechnical data has since been reprocessed to align with design inputs required for the SLOS mining method. The result has been the construction of a preliminary three-dimensional mining rock mass model (MRMM) that has been incorporated into preliminary stope mine design and infrastructure layout assessments, which have taken into account the predicted prevailing ground conditions.As with any model, it is necessary to improve the confidence in its predictability; therefore the model must be calibrated. The preliminary SMA MRMM was no exception. First pass calibration was possible with results from underground geotechnical window mapping from exposed rock mass conditions in the lateral development and surface geotechnical holes for ventilation shafts.The SMA project continues to advance and has started a program of resource drilling. Selected holes have been identified that target data limited areas. This will ensure that the data gaps are infilled in order to maintain the required data density required to improve the model confidence. In addition, further underground window mapping in the SMA will provide ‘mine scale drill hole’ data that can be used to either update the MRMM or as part of planned future calibration. Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

These include: The solving of many complex sampling optimisation problems with the simple approach of the worst case policy (WCP). A simple approach to single-stage sampling problems will be mentioned at continuation. Gas management practices across the Australian underground coal industry have evolved significantly since the early nineties with the introduction of hazard management plans, directional drilling techniques, surface gas predrainage methods, and the widespread use of ventilation and gas reservoir simulation software.The improvements are evidenced by a substantial reduction in the occurrence of outbursts and gas related delays during a period where coal production rates have increased three to four fold. The development of effective gas predrainage strategies have been afforded by the use of reservoir simulators and a significant increase in the availability of measured gas reservoir data, in particular gas content and composition, adsorption isotherms and permeability. That said significant opportunities remain to optimise gas drainage designs and increase certainty in the gas predrainage design process through an enhanced understanding of coal seam permeability and how it is applied in the gas drainage design process.This paper describes the discrepancies between measured and actual seam permeability found during the recent assessment of two pilot predrainage programs executed in the coal measures of Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The results of those programs illustrate the need to better understand the validity of measured permeability data. The history match method employed in the pilot well assessments is proposed as an integral step in the routine gas drainage design processes that will ultimately lead to increased certainty and flexibility in gas predrainage practices.CITATION:Blanch, M, 2017. The majority of SAG and ball mill design methodologies are applied using a single design value for mill selection, such as the 80th percentile ball mill work index or SMC value. Inherent in the selection of this design value is a desire for the mill to accommodate unfavourable, but not absolute worst case, feed conditions. It has been observed in numerous “post-mortems” of unsuccessful designs and also in many optimisation studies, that the selection of the design value has been poor. Statistical analysis of testwork data sets shows that inherent variability in the data can, by itself, lead to design errors. Metallurgical testing is an attempt to measure the characteristics of millions of tonnes of ore using only a few kilograms of sample. In this paper some realistic but synthetic test work data sets are used to explore old and new methods of defining the design envelope and subsequently selecting a reliable point. The aim of the paper is to provide practitioners with tools that reveal the adequacy (or otherwise) of metallurgical test programs intended to support various levels of project design. It also provide guidance as to how it is possible to statistically justify a comparatively high design point in the absence of adequate test data.CITATION:David, D, 2015. Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

"The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model. This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.
