The effect of various methods of conditioning on subsequent flotation performance was reviewed, where complex interactions involving attrition, aggregation, dispersion and surface cleaning were discussed. The present study focussed on the influences of standard laboratory cell conditioning, ultrasonic dispersion and high intensity conditioning on copper mineral flotation characteristics. The effect of substituting demineralised water for the WMC plant water was also examined. It was found that higher copper concentrate grades were often obtained using demineralised water, however the use of high intensity conditioning in mill water gave the highest copper recovery and highest flotation rate constant. This process should be considered if copper grade and recovery in this section of the plant drops, especially if the drop is due to surface oxidation of the copper minerals. Other methods of conditioning (cell and ultrasonic techniques) improved the rate of copper flotation above that obtained in the virtual absence of conditioning, showing the importance of conditioning on subsequent flotation operations.

The primary objective of most mining projects is to maximise the value delivered to the companyÆs shareholders. Achieving best practice performance and maintaining competitive advantage through low-cost production and high productivity is essential to achieving this aim. Benchmarking is an essential tool for the identification and implementation of best practice performance, and to realise continuous improvement by ensuring best practice becomes common practice. But to be successful, that is to deliver long-term value creation, benchmarking must be holistic and align operational performance with strategic intent. This paper outlines a rigorous and structured approach on how to conduct a successful benchmarking program that aligns operational performance with the businessÆs goals. Further it investigates the benefits that benchmarking can provide throughout the project life cycle and provides some key learnings from some of the worldÆs leading miners.

The mining industry represents a small part of the international economy. Comprising few large companies, the industry exhibits volatile returns and over the past 25 years has failed to produce a long-term return that meets its cost of capital. It is not surprising, therefore, that the minerals extraction and processing industry is under considerable pressure from the investment community to lift its game. Management and boards are responding to this pressure by implementing more exacting cost control measures, capital management programs and through the process of consolidation. However, the cost of capital to the industry appears to have increased in recent years and investor attention seems to be preoccupied with the ænewÆ economy. Both of these influences will conspire to raise the bar for acceptable industry economic performance. This paper provides a useful snapshot of the minerals and extraction industry as it enters the 21st century. It remains cautious about future performance other than to conclude that single digit returns are likely to prevail, albeit at higher levels than over the past 25 years.

I am sure that you are- all familiar with Airborne Magneto-meter Surveying so I shall-spend only a brief moment describing the instrument and techniques and the remainder of the allotted time-on-modern-application-of the instrument.The Airborne Magnetometer used by Aero Service in AUstralia-was designated by Gulf Research and implements the saturable-core flux-gate--principle. The first magnetometers developed'weremagnetic-balances and depended on the counter-torque principle but these required a stable platform and hence are not applicable to airborne surveying. Other methods include the induction methods, the Hall Effect methods, magneto-striction methods., Deflectioh. of,free.electrons, the proton-precession methods.Some: of these are applicable to airborne surveying. As a matter of-fact the nuclear precession magnetometer is the one generally used in the Satellites because it has been miniaturized most successfully.The Gulf Magnetometer is the one most generally used in mineral and petroleum exploration because its sensitivity is sufficient for the problem and-data and instrument techniques have been worked out and standardized.

"This paper details the many improvements possible in narrow vein mining from the use of treated mining/milling waste as mine fill. Such fill can be: treated mill tailing, cemented or uncemented; development muck, treated or untreated, cemented or uncemented; andsome combination of these materials, or surface sands/gravels. Treatments involved may be both physical (optimisation of particle size gradings) and chemical (neutralision of potentially harmful milling chemicals).Potential benefits include a reduction in: back stress; vein closure; alternate ground support requirements; mining dilution; potential for surface subsidence; and extent of surface disposal of mining/milling waste, resulting in reduced environmental impact. Considering the usually small production tonnages involved, preparation and placement of a highly applicable fill material can be economically accommodated.Emphasis is placed on steeply dipping orebodies being mined overhand, although practice in the much less steeply dipping RSA gold/platinum-type orebody is also considered.CITATION:Thomas, E G, 2012. The Filbara region of northwestern Western Australia contains several known occurrences of mafic/ultramafic rock assemblages which may host platinum group element (POE) mineralisation. This paper deals with occurrences at Munni Munni and Andover. The Munni Munni complex is of particular interest because it is known to contain PGE mineralisation and is currently undergoing active exploration. The US/Australia Joint Scanner Project of October 1985 collected airborne scanner data for the BMR over Munni Munni. Such an ultramafic-mafic complex had not been previously researched with advanced remote sensing instrumentation. Extensive investigation of data from the NSOO1 (Thematic Mapper Simulator) scanner resulted in successful differentiation of gabbroic and ultramafic rocks, and also subdivision within the ultramafies. Similar differentiation could not be achieved using conventional Landsat MSS imagery and aerial photography. Encouraged by those results and in support of BMR field research into the mafic-ultramafic suites of the region, data from the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument were investigated to attempt differentiation of the ultramafic and mafic rocks in the Andover complex some 50 km to the northeast of Munni Munni.

From December 1994 to November 1997 Odin MiningÆs Estero Hondo alluvial gold mine in western Ecuador washed almost 3.2 million bank cubic metres of gravel to produce just over 2600 kilograms of pure gold at a recovered grade of about 0.8 grams per bank cubic metre. The operation was a simple open pit. Draglines stripped the overburden, backhoes mined the gravel, and trucks transported the ore to a stationary, gravity-based wash plant for processing. At start-up the planned throughput was 55 000 bank cubic metres/month, but a year later this had been increased to 100 000 bank cubic metres/month. From April 1993 to July 1997 a total of 440 churn drill holes and 15 pits were sunk to test the property. The methods used to prepare the resource and reserve estimates from the raw field data are described, and seven sets of completed estimates are used to track the evolution of the projectÆs resource/reserve base through the exploration, feasibility and production stages.

Since 1960, the Dongchuan Copper Mining Bureau, Yunnan Province, China, has treated copper oxidised ores by sulphidisation - flotation technique only to recover copper. In order to improve the metallurgical performances and economics of flotation, extensive development work has been carried out during the past 30 years: several specific flotation flowsheets have evolved from the originally selected `stage - grinding and stage - flotation' flowsheet to suit various ores; the overall grinding size of the ores has been increased from 80 per cent - 200 mesh to 90 per cent - 200 mesh, resulting in significant increase in copper recovery; the substitution of CaS for NazS proved to be successful in sulphidisation of copper oxidised minerals, and also in avoiding the depressing effect of Na2S on copper sulphide minerals; the application of a number of activators of copper oxidised minerals, especially ethylene diamine phosphate, has considerably improved the flotation performance and decreased the consumptions of other reagents. Finally, the combined use of sodium hydroximate with butyl xanthate has been shown to be effective in enhancing the floatability of both copper oxidised and sulphide minerals.

Confidence in Yakabindie becoming a truly cost competitive nickel project has risen recently because of: ò the emergence of an economically effective contract mining climate; ò the delivery of cheaper energy via the Goldfields Gas Pipeline; and ò the development of the Yakabindie Process for production of nickel cathode and cobalt by-product directly from sulphide concentrates at site, dramatically cutting capital and operating costs compared to the conventional route. Development of the Yakabindie Process was a result of 'necessity being the mother of invention'. Yakabindie can now break out of the trap of relying on existing downstream processors to treat an intermediate, and instead the project can gain direct market access. The very attractive cost advantages demonstrate that hydrometallurgical processing of sulphide concentrates is a worthy prize. Improved cobalt recoveries, and tolerance of higher levels of magnesium and arsenic than allowable by smelters, are further advantages of this approach. Leach residues are combined with much larger quantities of naturally alkaline flotation tailings and remain at site. As a result the process is more environmentally sensitive than the conventional smelt/refine route, with no sulphur dioxide gas emissions and 'metal only out the gate'.

The present till now practice of averaging of ore by metal content at mining-dressing enterprises does not allow evaluating objectively really existing regularities of dressing process. The processing of large statistical data by specially designed methods has revealed the relationships of extracted mass of metals into concentrates when processing of ore at preparation plants. The analysis of the obtained relationships points to necessity of timely control by flows of ore with due account of different sorts of metal. For this problem solving it is offered to use specially designed methods on carrying out of calendar planning of a mining and shipment of ore at open casts, based on ranked arriving of flows of different sorts ores to preparation plant. The given methods includes economic-mathematical model forming and its implementing by worked out method. The formed model allows taking into account different technological and organisation limits, typical operation conditions of open cast and preparation plants. Using this methods of control of mining operations and designed on its basis the complex of software allows increasing volume of metals, extracting into concentrate, up to two per cent without any additional costs and saving of the existing technological schemes at preparation plant.

Potential areas for improvement in flotation performance were identified during JKTech model development surveys in October 2003. Subsequent implementation of the JKTech recommendations in consultation with flotation cell manufacturer Outokumpu have resulted in gold flotation recovery increases of more than four per cent over a two-year period. One of these recommendations was the installation of High Shear Stators in the Cleaner and Recleaner flotation cells. The High Shear Stator installation project was justified based on simulations completed using JKSimFloat. Bubble size measurements completed before and after installation of High Shear Stators showed a reduction in mean bubble size of approximately 50 per cent in the Cleaner cells. Both Cleaner and Recleaner banks showed a significant narrowing of the bubble size distributions following the installation. Plant gold recovery increase resulting from the installation of High Shear Stators was 1.1 per cent, with a 1.9 per cent increase in flotation gold recovery and 5.4 per cent increase in flotation sulfur recovery. Based on the 1.1 per cent recovery increase and total project cost of less than $200 000, the High Shear Stator Project NPV was $8 200 000 with a 0.25 year payback period.

The control of spontaneous combustion in spoil piles is an area of concern for a number of open cut coal mines. Spontaneous combustion in spoil may occur when carbonaceous waste materials are exposed to air. In large piles, the relatively high voidage within the pile may allow sufficient movement of air through the pile to sustain oxidation and heat generation. Over the past decade, ACARP and CSIRO have funded a number of projects aimed at providing a better understanding of the causes of spontaneous combustion in spoil piles and the development of control strategies. Work has focused on prevention measures but has also considered measures available to deal with well-developed fires. Field, laboratory and numerical modelling methods have been brought to bear on the issues. Individual projects have addressed: causes of spontaneous combustion including the relative reactivities of mine waste materials; the use of cover layers to prevent spontaneous combustion; the use of flyash grout to control an active fire; the emissions of air pollutants; and the emission of greenhouse gases. This paper provides a description of the work carried out to date with an emphasis on the major findings of the research and its application to open cut mines.

Although inherent mineral matter appears to have no effect of the reflectivity of inertinite in the reflecting light microscope, it has a marked effect on the grey levels resulting from the backscattered electron response in the scanning electron microscope. Inertinite with a high inherent mineral matter content has a high grey level response but not as high as that of mineral matter. The highest grey level response is with inertodetrinite which at times could be mistaken for mineral matter. Fusinite has a higher grey level response than semi-fusinite. The backscattered electron grey level response corresponds to average atomic number and hence approximately to density. If a porous structure develops and becomes filled with mineral matter such as S, Cl, Ca, Si, and Al the grey level will be higher. Micrinite has an unusual response in that it behaves like an exinite maceral in the SEM rather than an inertinite maceral. It either has a low grey level when relatively free of inherent mineral matter, or a low grey level background with high level granules corresponding to Si and Al dominantly. Similar structures have been found in exsudatinite and resinite. It is thought that micrinite results from the migration of hydrocarbons out of exinite giving a porous structure which usually accommodates inorganic matter.

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. When Australian voters elected a Labor Government in March 1983 the value of the Jabiluka uranium deposit as an asset of Pancontinental Mining Limited effectively evaporated overnight. The day before the election, Jabiluka was Pancon's principal asset, with the Company's 65% stake in the deposit having a market value of the order of $US1 billion. This value had been set by an agreement reached with a potential customer, who was prepared to pay $US150 million for 10% of Jabiluka. The months before the election had been the culmination of ten years of unremitting effort to bring what was then the world's largest reserve of high'grade uranium ore into production. These efforts had included two and a half years of negotiations with the local aborigines, as well as exhaustive environmental studies and conceptual mine planning. All domestic approvals required to develop the Jabiluka deposit had been given to Pancontinental and marketing efforts had successfully placed about 50% of the expected uranium production with overseas utilities. It appeared that Jabiluka was about to emerge as one of the world's great mining enterprises. The election of a government with an anti-uranium policy stopped Jabiluka dead in its tracks. Pancontinental's largest asset had effectively become worthless and the Company appeared to be facing a bleak future.

Early efforts to control the dust necessarily produced during dry crushing operations, took the form of venturis at loading chutes and other places where dust was most evident. These venturis discharged to the atmosphere and for obvious reasons were not very satisfactory.Attempts to collect the dust drawn off by the venturis, using dry cyclones, were not successful, the cyclones catching only the coarser particles. Further, no satisfactory method of continuously discharging the dust catchment was evolved. Water sprays were also used, and will be referred to later.In 1940, a single discharge fan of 3,000-4,000 cu. ft. per minute capacity, was installed to draw the dust-laden air from the Symons crushers and ·screening sections with their attendant conveyors. Suction was through two 15 in. ducts which branched off into 10 off-takes situated over the conveyers at points of discharge from crushers and screens.A dry cyclone was installed in front of the fan, which exhausted into a bag-house.The cyclone suffered from the defects of the smaller units mentioned earlier. When the collected dust reached a certain level in the cone, no more collection would take place until the cone was emptied. This objectionable feature was overcome by introducing a jet of water ahead of the cyclone. The water and dust collected overflowed a weir and were pumped to the mill.

The deformation resulting from the presence of a tunnel may signifcantly affected, nearby structures and need to be considered during design of both tunnel and structure. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of different factors which may affect the interaction between the tunnel and the str- ucture. These include; the depth of both tunnel and foundation level of the structure ( z and t ), distance between C.L. of tunnel and loads, breadth of the loaded area, Diameter of tunnel and lining of the tunnel. The problem is studied as a two dimensional plane strain model by the boundary element technique. The results of this study indicated that the presence of a cavity/tunnel increases, in general, the vertical displacement on the ground surface and at the foundation level as well as the horizontal and vertical stresses in the cavity/tunnel level. The effect of eccentricity is increasing as e/D decreasing. For pile foundation there is a quite different- influence of the presence of cavity/tunnel in both cases of friction pile and end bearing pile type of foundation.

The history of the discovery. and successful development of the offshore Gippsland Basin oil and gas fields has been well docu- mented in contemporarary and more recent industry and profes- sional literature. The various articles, papers and books record fairly balanced views and comments as to the nature and results of the explora- tion effort, and factual data concerning the subsequent develop- ment of the fields and facilities concerned with petroleum production in the Bass Strait and Gippsland environment.
