The thermodynamic properties of arsenic in metal, speiss, matte, slag and gas phases are first summarised in this paper. Arsenic associates with sulphide minerals and generally has compounds of high volatility, but it has a weak affinity for sulphur and a strong affinity for metals, especially copper and iron. In the initial stage of the oxidation of sulphide concentrates arsenic is volatilised easily prior to the oxidation of FeS, although it tends to be fixed in the condensed phase as FeAsO4 if the concentrate is over-oxidised. Thermodynamic simulation of oxidative copper smelting reveals the distribution of arsenic between matte, slag and gas, and the possibility of condensation of arsenic from the resulting waste gas is discussed. In reductive smelting more arsenic remains in the metal or matte, and is sometimes concentrated as a separate speiss phase. The phase relations and thermodynamic properties of speiss are also summarised briefly. Arsenic refining from smelted copper metal is shown, from an examination of the basic principles of arsenic removal into slags, to be difficult. Owing to its weak affinity for lead however, arsenic refining from lead bullion is seen to be much easier.

A large open pit is planned at the site of an existing underground mine. Strategic planning work has been undertaken to investigate the project value associated with an expansion of underground operations in conjunction with the proposed pit. Previous analysis determined that any depletion of the available pit resource that changes the optimum pushback sequence has a significant negative impact on overall project value. Therefore, to investigate the viability of an underground expansion requires a system to identify the stope resource that would add value to a combined operation if mined ahead of the pit. The key solution to this problem was to generate a resource model variable that defines the blocks, which have greater discounted value if mined by stoping rather than by the open pit. A key assumption was that the open pit is the main driver of overall project value. From the identified potential underground resource, series of mineable stope shells were generated at a range of cut-offs. This stope reserve data formed the input to a mixed integer program based software tool that was developed and used to optimise the underground mining plan, at conceptual level, for various project configurations. A dynamic programming tool was then applied to evaluate the optimum value of a combined open pit and underground operation. The overall objective of this project was to determine the strategic plan that yields the optimum value for a combined undergroundûopen pit operation. The results provided a clear focus and direction for more detailed design and planning.

Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data û especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment. However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model. An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance. It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together û in a single step. However, the success of the Mine to MillTM project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from orebody model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling. However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements û not on the business model. This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies. Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning.

Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The key elements required to maintain final wall integrity and hence slope reliability are discussed. Failure modes and mechanisms in highly structured rock slopes are then reviewed. The impact of blast disturbance on rock masses in general is discussed and the relationships between the slope failure mode and blast disturbance is then explored. The question of how designers can incorporate such impacts into the slope design process is then addressed. This necessarily involves rock mass strength consideration and two case studies are used to demonstrate a recent dilemma in this regard. Some progress regarding this dilemma has also been reported for the second case study. The major conclusions are that: Slope reliability can be severely compromised if the slopes are damaged by blasting and this impact is not often incorporated into the slope design process. The location and extent of the blast damage will impact some slope failure geometries and failure mechanisms more than others. The concept of failure mechanism specific vulnerability needs to be further developed. The evidence indicates that this aspect is even more extreme for weak ground conditions. The quantification of the reduction in rock mass strength due to blast damage is not well understood and limitations exist with some recent guidelines. The use of the Hoek-Brown criterion for slopes in blocky rock masses requires considerable judgement. Further applied developments in this regard would be very beneficial to the industry. Some promising methods to incorporate blast damage estimates into the slope design process are emerging. It is good business to minimise final wall blast damage otherwise a whole range of issues relating to reduced slope reliability emerge.

Until the early 1960s the world aluminium industry was dominated by six principle pro- ducers with integrated activities from bauxite mining to aluminium production. The growth in consumption of aluminium since that time and the emergence of additional producers has broadened the market for bauxite. In addition the increase in the optimum size of alumina refin- eries has influenced competing metal producers to unite in large joint ventures to minimize alumina costs. From these bases the paper examines present and likely future markets for Australian bauxite; differing marketing phil- osophies for serving those markets; factors influencing successful marketing; and the sources and relative strength of competition which Australia faces.

The reasons for using SFRS, including the way a SFRS performs in comparison to plain shotcrete as a support element in mining tunnels, are discussed. The mechanisms by which steel fibres reinforce shotcrete and the need for specifying performance criteria are highlighted. A description of current testing procedures, including an overview of æquantitativeÆ design recommendations provided from various international authorities, is provided. A summary of international recommendations on suitable æqualitativeÆ performance classifications is also reviewed, including a critique of their suitability. Finally recommendations on the practical considerations necessary to ensure good quality, in-place SFRS, are made, including a calculation method for determining minimum steel fibre dosages.

Just as Australia is part of the Pacific Rim, so the Pacific Rim should be viewed as part of the whole world. That applies in particular to that scarce commodity û money. There are five main factors of production in any mining development û mineralisation, materials, manpower, management and money. LetÆs focus on the upstream input û mineralisation, and the downstream input û money, especially in the area of communications. Unknown to many, the Competent Person reporting on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves has a direct and unavoidable impact on the companyÆs financial statements û the profit and loss account and balance sheet. With respect to reporting of the major asset of most mining companies û the resources/reserves û investors are getting a better deal now than at any time in memory as regards flow and adequacy of information. Australia has been a world leader in this regard. The outlook is for even more informative and useful reporting. The more rigorous reporting requirements for Exploration Results and Mineral Resources/Reserves, which have become a worldwide phenomenon over the last five years, will continue. This will be positive for the mining industry as a whole and for Australia in particular. However competition for the scarce investment dollar will also increase. Put simply, mining has many competitors, unconnected with mining, for the capture of the investment dollar. It behoves all participants to recognise that there are three investment factors which influence strongly the willingness of investors to put money into mining. These are Confidence, Credibility and Consistency. AustraliaÆs investment image stands high in these three respects, but the competition will continue to grow. AustraliaÆs lead must be maintained. However, some investment decisions should not necessarily be based on fundamental, quantifiable facors. Some of these are outlined.

Taxation is a major factor in evaluating mining project developments. The availability or otherwise of effective tax relief for project expenditures can have a crucial bearing on the decision to proceed with a project. The special position of the mining industry is recognised within the Income Tax Assessment Act (the "Tax Act") by special legislation, namely Divisions 10, 1OAAA and 10AA. The legislation both extends the scope of items which are eligible for deduction and affects the timing of deductions. Generally, the legislation separates expenditure into 3 categories: 1. Expenditure on exploration 2. Capital expenditure on the development and the running of the mine; and 3. Facilities used in the transport of minerals. Companies evaluating a project should carefully analyse their proposed expenditures, allocating them between these categories so as to identify potentially non-deductible expenditures and to determine the period over which tax relief will be Obtained.

The Chigirishima Smelter of Toho,Zinc Co., Ltd. is the largest independent custom lead smelter in Japan and produces about 60,000 tonnes/yr of electrolytic lead. The quantity of slag produced by blast furnace is approximately 65,000 tonnes/yr, 30,000 tonnes/yr of which is sent back to the sintering plant for mixing with lead concentrates. The remaining slag used to be piled up at the yard until the operation of the fuming plant started in July 1977. We examined the slag fuming process with the purpose of achieving: 1) Improvement of the operating results by recovering zinc and lead from blast furnace slag. The lead content in slag at Chigirishima is slightly high, because the height of blast furnace shaft is low and consequently the quantity of sinter smelted per area at tuyere level is rather large. 2) Production of a salable slag as raw material for cement by lowering zinc and lead content in slag.

HISTORY OF PROCESS DEVELOPMENT The manufacture of coke from coal commenced at the beginning of the 17th century by heaping coal into circular mounds in the open, covering with earth, clay or ash and slowly burning the coal in the mounds to produce a heap of coke. Naturally the process was slow in production rate with low coke recovery due to the loss of that part of the coal which was completely burnt to ash. As a natural consequence of this initial carbonisation method, a coke oven design was developed so that the coking chamber, which was constructed of brick, was circular in plan, cylindrical in section with a dome shaped roof - similar in shape to the original coal mounds. As the shape of the chamber was similar to the old dome shaped beehive, the ovens were called beehive ovens. The ovens were built in long single or double rows with retaining walls between each oven and as such were known as a battery of beehive coke ovens. In these early beehive ovens, coal was charged from hand wheeled tubs into a hole into the top of each oven, hand- levelled with a rake and the oven side opening sealed with bricks and clay except for some small holes in the opening to admit limited quantity of air for combustion. Coking commenced by the heat retained in the brickwork from the previous charge. The gases evolved from the coal, together with the admitted air, were partially burnt inside the oven to supply the heat for carbonisation and the surplus gases were burnt to waste at the top charging hole. The heat from this gaseous combustion inside the oven together with the reflected heat from the brickwork of the arched roof of the oven allowed carbonisation of the coal charge to proceed from its surface slowly downwards to the floor of the oven. At the end of the coking cycle (usually 4 or 5 days) when there was no more evolution of gases, as indicated by diminishing gas flame and a drop in oven temperature, the brickwork of the oven opening was removed. The coke was then quenched by inserting a pipe with spray holes to spray water over the coke charge in the oven after which the coke was raked from the oven. The work of charging and levelling the coal, bricking and removal of oven opening, quenching and raking out the coke all required manual labour. As these ovens only carbonised a 5 to 7 ton charge of coal per cycle of 4 to 5 days, to produce 3 to 41/2 ton of marketable coke, the labour required per ton of coke was high.

æZero waste steel making productionÆ has already been the subject of several studies and also the successful result of some companies. Regarding waste and by-products, slags are the largest in terms of weight, although among the least hazardous. All steelmakers around the world are presently looking into profitable solutions, according to their local conditions: environment constraints, available markets, and mode of operation. Today the major technical methods of slag value capture include different levels of magnetic separation and screening to remove entrained steel, for production of aggregate in civil works. A survey of different retrieval processes shows that pyrometallurgical processing of steelmaking slags will increase the recovery ratio of iron and other metals. In the process, the remaining part of the material, a mixture of metallic oxides, can be easily transformed into hydraulic binder such as cement. Can steelmakers consider the slag as a co-product, and not only a waste or by-product? The ability of pyrometallurgical processes to treat other wastes and by-products generated in the steelplant is an opportunity for the steelmakers to reach the æzero waste productionÆ status. A technical survey of the experiences and possible solutions of pyrometallurgical processing is presented as well as technical descriptions of technological, economical and profitability analysis in relation with foreseeable markets.

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

Complex processing plants present a myriad of safety issues to the design engineer. The extent to which the design engineer manages to lay the foundations for a safe plant ultimately sets the stage for life long safety performance. Industry traditionally measures engineering safety performance by indicators such as Lost Time Injuries, Restricted Work Case Injuries, Overall Incident Frequency Rates, etc. While these measures are useful indicators of performance for the construction, commissioning and operations phase of a project, they do not necessarily drive the most appropriate behaviours for Safe Plant Design. Achieving an inherently safe design requires a diligent focus on low frequency, high consequence events. First and foremost the engineering team needs to have a design culture and methodology which leads to a plant which is as close as possible to being inherently safe. Such a culture might come from an organisation that has æmindfulnessÆ about safety, and which is nurturing a culture where warning signs are recognised and addressed. This paper explores the development of mindfulness and warning signs in design.

The evaluation of risk is becoming more important in the siting of mining operations in the United States as well as the rest of the world. The determination of environmental, economic, as well as health and safety risks is an important step in the planning of any mining operation. Hydrogeology plays an important role in pre-mine planning and in the determination of these risks. The mine operators must determine if ground water would inhibit mining in any way. Factors which are important to consider include mine dewatering economics, slope stability, and other adverse hydrologic impacts. This paper presents methodologies for the characterization of hydrogeological risks for a mining operation. First of all, the term risk analysis is defined and its utility is addressed. Then, stepwise methods for performing a typical risk analysis are presented. Finally, the application of risk analysis to hydrogeology in mining is given. With slight modification, it is believed that these methodologies can be used to evaluate the hydrogeological risks for any mining operation.

The rapid crushing technique for the measurement of gas content of coal consists of accelerating the rate of gas desorption from coal by crushing. This technique allows the determination of gas content in the space of hours rather than days or weeks as required for the traditional slow desorption technique. The crushing technique is used particularly when gas content determinations are urgently required for mine safety purposes. The method is now routinely used in underground coal mines of NSW and to a lesser extent in QLD. Despite the rapidity and efficiency of this method, concerns have been raised upon the reliability of the method to deliver accurate results. Experience in Australia has shown that there is in fact some discrepancy in results between gas laboratories using the rapid crush technique. The development of rapid crushing techniques for seam gas content measurements in Australia and the main causes of variability in the gas content test results were investigated. The gas laboratories participating in the gas content testing were CSIRO Division of Coal and Energy, BHP Technical Services and GeoGas Pty. Ltd.

The use of secondary desliming cyclones ahead of froth flotation cells to reject ultrafine (-45 ¦m) particles has become a popular option in the United States for preparing fine coal feeds for froth flotation circuits. In light of this popularity, several experimental studies have been performed at industrial plant sites to develop a better understanding of the impacts of ultrafine desliming on froth cell performance and, ultimately, overall plant performance. These studies included an evaluation of various circuit configurations incorporating different flotation technologies (conventional machines and column cells) as well as different dewatering systems (disc filters, screen-bowl centrifuges, and thermal dryers). The data obtained from these studies indicate that deslime circuits offer several important benefits including lower product ash, reduced product moisture, better froth handling characteristics, and lower capital and operating costs. In addition, case studies conducted as part of this investigation have been used to develop generic guidelines for how deslime circuits may be successfully applied to improve the overall profitability of fine coal flotation circuits for both the metallurgical and steam coal markets.

In cases where coarse gold is present in a deposit, it is usual to use the screen fire assay (SFA) method to analyse the samples. There is no doubt that this method is more accurate than the standard fire assay (FA) and reduces the risk to have a systematic bias. Nevertheless, the difference between the analytical errors of both methods can be glossed over when the overall sampling error is added to obtain the measurement error. In that case, the advantage of the SFA cannot justify its higher cost.The current paper attempts to address this question in the case of a gold ore deposit with visible coarse gold in various sampling situations (drill core sampling in exploration, blasthole or chip sampling in mining exploitation). The overall measurement error is estimated taking into account the analytical error and all the sampling error components following the Pierre GyÆs theory of sampling.Firstly, only the last sampling stage is considered when the pulverised sample is processed either to obtain one analysis sample for a FA or to be screened and subsampled for a SFA. The calculated measurement error clearly shows the advantage of the SFA specifically in presence of coarse gold. Secondly, the half core sampling is studied to explain the observed discrepancies when controlling the second half core. Finally, the blasthole sampling is treated using in situ heterogeneity models to show that the relative advantage of the SFA is hidden by the large overall sampling error.In conclusion, the choice of the assaying method is discussed at the light of the overall measurement error and in accordance to the analysis objective.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012. An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. There are many different challenges when sampling mineral commodities. Sampling is part of many decision-making processes, from control of the number of drops of a reagent to all aspects involved in determining how much to pay for a mineral consignment. However, if all decisions must be supported by correct assumptions, or at least agreed terms, how can this be guaranteed? The main approach is to emphasise the importance of continuous surveying of sampling practices. If they are based on non-recommended protocols, this raises concerns. In addition, safety failures and lack of appropriate behaviour from the technical perspective can lead to disasters, both from the human and business perspectives. Impacts on safety and health are clearly unacceptable. It should be noted that imperfect safety and health practices in sampling operations have a strange correlation with incorrect sampling techniques. The commercial interface can also be affected. Companies have studied extensively the various aspects of measuring quality parameters for mineral commodities to understand the risks for investors and owners, and they take decisions that fundamentally respect the interests of parties in contracts and not result in losses. Every result should be obtained in defensible ways, and neither losses nor profits taken in indefensible ways. Most of such situations are related to bias; a significant systematic difference between a measured value and a reference value for a contractual quality parameter. Bias is always undesirable, because it always implies an incorrect advantage for one party and without doubt an undesired disadvantage for the other party. These situations are solved financially through a third-party arbitrator becoming involved in delicate situations, such as a commercial claim, but the outcome is always tangibly or intangibly bad for one of the parties. Another possibility is a permanent or temporary loss of precision. Poor precision, due its nature, generates reasonably balanced losses and profits, but it may hide out-of-control situations, generate instability and induce financial losses due to actions taken towards clearing commercial disputes involving interlaboratory programs, sample exchanges and duplicated sampling and sample preparation procedures, in the end wasting time and resources and creating a permanent source of commercial tension. While bias situations demand immediate adjustments for correctness, poor precision has to be understood as something that cannot be just calibrated out and is a situation that demands investment of time and effort. Precision optimisation has to take into account best practice for obtaining the required precision as well as cost/benefit analysis studies. Purchasers, engineers, salesmen and all personnel need to recognise that sampling is a major area to understand when taking decisions. The aim is to spread concepts that can really help, such as simple in-house actions to improve productivity and completion of surveys on commercial sampling operations, in order to ensure correct results are obtained and assertively take corrective actions, thereby establishing a healthy relationship with investors, suppliers and purchasers and in the process optimising the business.
