It is commonly known that copper smelter terms include penalties if the concentrations of elements, such as arsenic, mercury and fluorine, exceed stipulated limits. It is less commonly known that the behaviour of these elements in the smelters can depend on the processes used to treat the concentrate. The principle behind the penalties is to compensate the smelters and refineries for additional costs caused by the presence of the penalty elements, but these costs will vary depending on the process used and the location of the smelter.The issues caused by the minor elements include effects on the occupational health of smelter workers, increased environmental disposal costs, increased operating costs and reduced cathode copper quality.The effects of minor elements can be surprising. High levels of arsenic in concentrate are considered undesirable, but some smelters add arsenic to anode copper to improve the performance of the refinery.Excess concentrations of some elements will result in rejection of concentrates by smelters. China has blanket import bans on copper concentrates with concentrations of lead, arsenic cadmium, fluorine and mercury exceeding specified levels.This paper will review the behaviour of minor elements in smelters and refineries, explaining the deleterious effects of each of them, to provide a greater understanding for people and organisations wishing to market copper concentrates.CITATION:Fountain, C, 2013. Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

JUDGING from the attitude of past and present Parliaments in Australia, it is a' reasonable assumption that encouragement of the principal industries has been adopted as a main principle in the government of the country, but while in most cases bonuses, subsidies, and other means have been proved successful and become recognized as established methods in the case of mining, which is undoubtedly one of the most important industries, the question is complicated by difference of conditions and variable quantities, and it can scarcely be said that any system has been proved generally successful. Indeed, it would not be a very extravagant statement to assert that problems connected with affording direct monetary assistance in aid of mining development, and at the same time devising a system adaptable to the varying conditions to be met, are, in every State of the Oommonwealth, matters continually exercising the minds of those concerned in providing and ailocating such assistance ie Parliament on the one hand, and the Department of Mines on the other.True, there are methods in vogue of granting State assistance to the mining industry which have undoubtedly been successful, but it is in most cases questionable whether the beneficial results following successful expenditure in one direction have compensated.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. The total Western Australian output to the end of 1962 is reported by the Mines Department as 110,013 long tons valued at úAl2,403,728..

Kumba Iron OreÆs Sishen Mine is one of the worldÆs largest iron ore mining operations situated in the Northern Cape, South Africa. It produces 29 million tonnes of iron ore products per annum using a dense medium separation (DMS) beneficiation process. Kumba is currently commissioning the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP) which will produce a further 13 Mtpa product through a jigging beneficiation process. The products from the Sishen Mine are highly sought after and consumed by domestic and various European and Asian customers. During beneficiation iron ore slimes are generated and discarded as waste material to the slimes dams. A study was initiated in 2005 to investigate processes to beneficiate these slimes to saleable products û prompted by the current high demand for iron ore products and the high grade in the Sishen slimes thickener underflow of approximately 54 per cent Fe. Initial laboratory scale test work indicated that a 66.5 per cent Fe iron ore concentrate could be produced from the Sishen slimes thickener underflow through a process of classification, two stage wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and five stage flotation. This process, however, did not produce the desired results during pilot plant testing and numerous alternative process routes were investigated. The process that did achieve the desired product grade of 66.5 per cent Fe at economically feasible product yields consisted of two stage WHIMS using SLON magnetic separators. Results achieved indicate that the thickener underflow slimes can be upgraded from 54 per cent Fe to 66.5 per cent Fe at a product yield of ca. 40 per cent. Product yield could be increased through the further beneficiation of the SLON tails. The Sishen slimes thickener underflow production rate is ca. 3 Mtpa û resulting in a potential concentrate production of ca. 1.2 Mtpa. The slimes concentrate will be fed to a pelletising plant that will produce 66 per cent Fe pellets destined for domestic and or export markets.

Direct seeding or regeneration of vegetation in Australia has been occurring in nature for about 400 million years! From the 1870's till the 1930's, direct seeding by man was used in the south-west of Victoria as a method of re-establishing native vegetation on broadacre farmland. The introduction of improved exotic pasture grasses and the wide-spread use of superphosphate from the 1930's lead to its demise as a farmland revegetation technique.

Drilling and blasting at Westside Mine near Wallsend, NSW, has presented a challenge for Orica Explosives, Australia. The colliery produces 600 000 tonnes of steaming coal per year from two seams using surface mining techniques. Tapping into underlying coal will greatly improve the yield, but there are many issues which make this an enormous challenge. Hunter Valley Earthmoving engaged Orica Explosives to supply the explosives products and to provide much of the blasting expertise that is needed on the minesite. Hunter Valley Earthmoving and Orica Explosives have proven to be an outstanding, unified technical team on this project. The success of the team is based on good communication, progressive attitudes, extensive expertise in blast design and most importantly, care and accuracy in implementing the agreed upon designs.

This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

During 2002, design and development of the worldÆs largest flotation cell was completed. The cell is the mineral industryÆs first 257 m3 flotation cell, and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells, with a 50 per cent increase in cell volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO« SmartCellTM flotation machine. It is anticipated, in the next few years, world-class copper sulfide concentrators will incorporate 257 m3 flotation cells in their rougher-scavenger flotation circuits. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No 250 SmartCellTM flotation machine is installed in Minera Los PelambresÆ existing rougher flotation circuit. The machine is located in front of the first cell in Row 1 and is followed by nine No 130 SmartCellTM flotation cells. The unit has been in operation since April 2004, and has proven itself in this duty. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No 250 flotation cell, and a case study will be presented on the in-plant testing of the equipment. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulfide concentrator.

Zircon is the second in abundance among the heavy minerals occurring in the beach sand along the coastal belt of Bangladesh. In this study a detailed characterisation of Bangladesh zircon extracted at the pilot plant of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission at CoxÆs Bazar has been attempted using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. From the chemical analysis it is found that Bangladesh zircon has a purity of 95.88 per cent. The main impurity in Bangladesh zircon is titanium oxide (3.01 per cent). This is followed by iron oxide (0.42 per cent). A number of other oxides are also found. Microscopic study revealed that Bangladesh zircon has an elongated, prismatic shape with pyramidal termination in about half of the grains while the rest are more or less rounded. Some fractured and irregular grains are also found. Bulk sample of Bangladesh zircon in the as-received condition shows a yellowish brown color. However, individual zircon grains are seen to be almost colourless and transparent under polarised light. XRD study confirmed good crystallinity in the sample. Under the microscope it is found that zircon grains constitute 94 per cent while total impurities amount to six per cent in Bangladesh zircon. This result agrees fairly well with the chemical analysis results. Microscopic study identifies oxides of titanium (both rutile and ilmenite) to be the main impurity, in conformity with the findings of chemical analysis. Further, monazite was also identified as an impurity under the microscope. An iron bearing coating is also found on a few zircon grains. Most of the impurities found in Bangladesh zircon exist as discrete minerals.

High ambient temperatures combined with high surface humidity in the north of Australia and, in particular, the northern areas of the Northern Territory can make underground workplaces relatively inhospitable at certain times of the year. . Woodcutters' silver/lead/zinc mine, situated some 80 km south of Darwin, would be the most northerly underground operation of any significance in Australia. As such, during the build up to the wet season, it has a particular problem of ventilating a deep underground mine with already high dry and wet bulb temperatures at the surface. The Mine Management Act and Regulations mention only that workplaces shall be 'in a fit state for a person to work in or occupy'. Woodcutters therefore set in progress a Heat Stress Program to endeavour to set standards which would be more measurable and justifiable. The aim of the program was to compile a record of ambient atmospheric conditions in the working areas such that areas and/or work activities generating high ambient temperatures and humidities could be identified, quantified and qualified. Once the analysis stage of this program was completed, Woodcutters compiled a set of recommendations for the continued monitoring for, and control of, heat stress conditions to ensure that no underground employee was placed at risk from 'heat stress'. These recommendations are discussed in this paper.

Extractive metallurgy in the mining industry in Western Australia has diversified and increased in the last 11 years. Before 1980, the industry mainly produced alumina, nickel, mineral sands and iron ore, with the gold industry restricted to five operating plants using Merrill-Crowe technology. In 1981 Carbon-in-pulp (C]P) plants were commissioned at Kambalda, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra.Currently, the gold industry has some seventy CIP plants in operation, production of synthetic rutile has increased tenfold to 500 000 tpa, alumina production has doubled and production of copper, lead and zinc concentrates has begun. Other extractive metallurgy plants recover tin, niobium and tantalum, silicon, titanium dioxide and zirconia. Current proposals include vanadium, steel and rare earths.

Running a successful reagent plant trial is not an easy task, especially when trying to achieve an incremental improvement in a highly variable process, such as flotation. Cytec aims to achieve one per cent recovery improvement with 90 per cent statistical confidence. Most concentrators experience large fluctuations in recovery and so the æmagicalÆ one per cent is difficult to detect. With the aid of statistical software, including REFDISTR (proprietary) and ECHIPR, Cytec have developed a unique approach to differentiate between daily operational variation and actual process improvement. This paper describes how Cytec runs a plant trial based on extensive laboratory investigation and detailed analysis of historical plant data using statistical techniques.

The Mount Morgan mine occupies a unique place in the mining history of Australia and although not as glamorous during the second phase of its existence, it made a significant contribution to the technical and financial history of the nation throughout its life. The stories of the intrigue surrounding its discovery and early operation, the enormous return received by its original investors in its first five years as a public company, its influence on the local, national and international scene to its final closure have been documented in many publications, the most recent and authoritative being by John Kerr (1982). Institute publications as far back as 1911 have documented details of the mining, metallurgical and engineering practices of the two companies which worked the 100 or so acres which were alleged to be `the richest single gold mine in the world'. Within the Institute records appear the names of Presidents, Institute Medal recipients and others connected with Mount Morgan who have played an important part in the Institute history.
