This paper discusses basic practices of operation applied to raise drilling. It draws attention to critical areas that tend to be neglected. A brief history covers development of raise drills. The elements of the equipment, derrick assembly, drill string and reamers are ex- amined. Particular emphasis is on the drill string. Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrrhotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineralogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulphides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second; pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulphur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, while having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilisation, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-microscopic gold in the second stage.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

The longwall panels at Clarence Colliery have experienced intermittent sudden weightings on the face that have caused some production delays. These weightings have typically been more severe on the wider faces. A program of surface subsidence and extensometer monitoring was undertaken above Longwalls 4 and 5 to investigate the behaviour of the overburden strata during longwall extraction on two faces of different widths.The monitoring indicated that a dome shaped zone of large downward movement extends up into the overburden strata to a height equal to about the panel width.

Magmatic-related low sulfidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.   Low sulphidation systems in the south-west Pacific region exhibit a vertical zonation in deposit types: from porphyry copper-gold at deep levels, quartz-sulfide-gold at mesothermal to deep epithermal levels, carbonate-base metal gold at mainly epithermal levels, and epithermal quartz silver-gold at shallow levels. It is interpreted that the characteristics of each of these styles of deposits is produced by mixing with circulating waters of different physio-chemical compositions.

The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. At the present stage of the Rundle oil shale project planning, with depressed world oil prices, early development of the resource is unlikely. However, this postponement is being used to carry out technical studies required to evaluate alternative rehabilitation strategies and establish a sound environmental planning basis. Major technical data from the following studies are reviewed: Resource: - mine planning; material characterisation; retorting; geology; Environmental: - meteorology; surface water management; laboratory and field leachates; revegetation; waste characterisation; hydraulic and chemical modelling; dust suppression; plant/water interactions; and impact evaluation. These studies have shown that topsoil replacement, seeding mixtures, fertilizer application rates, subsoil quality and handling, waste pile slope and most importantly soil water storage are key factors in successful rehabilitation.

This paper discusses the implementation of an underground rail haulage system during a major expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in 1998. The factors affecting the selection of rail haulage are discussed and details are provided on the rail system, which is designed to transport more than 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The reliability of the system during commissioning is discussed, including the decision to manufacture a ædummyÆ locomotive in order to keep the system operational. Finally, reliability improvements made both during and after commissioning are discussed with comments provided on the effectiveness of the system as it operates today.

The association of graphite with a fine grained pyrite in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore was investigated from mineralogical and metallurgical standpoints. The pyrite has been partially or completely replaced by galena and to a less extent by sphalerite, pyrrhotiteand chalcopyrite with the retention of graphite films or inclusions. During lead flotation the graphite imparts a spontaneous flotability to all associated minerals, resulting in a low grade fraction, which we call the carbonaceous fraction, floating with and diluting the lead concentrate. In times of low metal prices this fraction seriously reduces the economic value of the lead concentrate. A flotation procedure was developed to upgrade the carbonaceous fraction separately, producing an economic concentrate and a tailing.INTRODUCTIONThe lead concentrate produced from Mount Isa ores can vary from 20 to 50 per cent lead, depending on the locality in the mine from which the ore is obtained. Variations of this order are independent of ore grade and lead recovery. The large variation is related to the presence in the ore of a variable fast floating low grade fraction known locally as the carbonaceous fraction because of its association with graphite. During conventional lead flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate the carbonaceous fraction floats rapidly and unselectively with normal Mount Isa galena.The paper discusses mainly the examination and treatment of an average carbonaceous fraction, defined here as the fast floating material in the mill feed of late 1956. The recovery of molybdenum at Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) has become increasingly important as its demand and price have risen dramatically in the last few years. Consequently, the flotation behaviour of the molybdenum bearing mineral, molybdenite, has received a significant amount of attention. The flotation performance of molybdenite generally lags that of the copper sulfide minerals and is much more variable. There are many factors including particle size, liberation, surface slimes and oxidation that contribute to this and also much speculation as to the relative contribution of each of these factors. This paper discusses the morphology of the molybdenite found at KUC, the mineral associations in the different lithogical ores types and the effect that each of these has on flotation performance. Quantitative mineralogical analysis and an assessment of particle shapes are used to explain that flotation behaviour does not necessarily follow expected trends and that some behaviour is counter-intuitive. This unique behaviour can be explained by the morphology and anisotropic nature of molybdenite.

The 1100 Orebody is the main copper production area of Isa Mine with an output of 390 000 tonnes per four week period and a work force of approximately 260 men per shift. Currently a total of 56 nippers work a three shift, five day week roster to-service crews spread over a strike length of 1000 m and a vertical height of 220 in. A variety of rail and diesel equipment provides shaftto cribroom and cribroomto sublevel work place transport of men and materials. Overall eficiency and safety has been improved with a selected group performing supply, storage, clean-up and "bus runs" throughout the orebody - activities which are further co-ordinated by an FM radio system linking units with a control clerk.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

Portable crushing at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit mine has proven both the economics and operability of large, hardrock, portable systems. In-house expertise was utilized to create a system incorporating both operational and maintenance features requested by operating personnel. The monitor/control system involves over 400 channels of information and is based on a DEC 1SI 11/2 microprocessor communicating with seven microprocessor-based data acquisition systems over a 4-wire, multidrop link. The year and one-half successful operation affirms the design philosophy and the hardware/software implementation.
