Currently there is considerable interest in the production of DRI in Western Australia to take advantage of intense interest from the Asian market. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. This paper critically examines the technical and economic issues of various gas-based DR processes available today and recommends the most effective and attractive processes suitable for Western Australian iron ores.

This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.

In South African gold mines, the types of material requiring transportation to the stoping areas include timber packs, explosives, hydraulic rock props, scrapers, scraper winches, pipes, pumps and backfill material (in areas where backfill is being used). Currently timber packs are broken down to their basic components (log and brick) and are transported into the stope by means of either monowinches or a combination of monowinch and scraper winch. Other materials, such as explosives, hydraulic rock props, scrapers, scraper winches, pipes, pumps and backfill material must be transported by other means, usually by hand or, in the case of heavier items, by chain blocks. With the drive to increase stope advance rates and the rise in the number of miners with HIV/AIDS, there is a need in the South African gold mining industry for an improved material handling system. To meet future requirements, material handling systems should assist miners to transport materials quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, it must be financially viable and economically competitive with current material handling systems. This paper looks at the in-stope material handling efficiency of current monowinch systems and provides solutions to improve efficiency. In addition, the use of in-stope monorails are reviewed and the possible scenarios that will substantiate the use of monorail systems are discussed.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.

Preliminary petrographic investigations of eight Upper Permian coal seams of the Muja sub-basin, Collie Coalfield, reveal that the coal is high in inertinite and relatively low in vitrinite and exinite contents. The exinite content of Collie coal is relatively high when compared to other Australian coal of similar age. In addition the mineral matter content of the coal is very much lower than comparable Permian coal of Eastern Australia. The higher exinite content could be attributed to the type of Glossopteris flora, and the lower mineral matter content to the environment of deposition postulated for the Collie Coal Measures.

Methods of measuring the frictional properties of rock surfaces, both by direct sliding and in triaxial apparatus, are described. It was found that for some rocks the coefficient of friction remains reasonably constant as sliding is continued but for others it increases considerably.The effect of fluid pressure in the surface of sliding was found in all cases to be adequately represented by the effective stress criterion. Some observations on sliding on two conjugate planes showed that the motion on the two planes may be very different, depending on small differences in the constraints.The coefficients of friction of natural open joints in bore core were found to lie in the comparatively narrow range 0.32 to O.68 although surface coatings were very diverse.A set of diagrams on the equal area projection is given which enables a rapid determination to be made of those planes on which sliding is possible in a given three-dimensional stress field. The influence of the intermediate principal stress on this is of considerable importance.

Removing the interference of latter events, the data of geophysical (such as gravity and aeromagnetic) anomalies may indicate whether the mobile belt exist and whether the adjacent terrains of the mobile belt originally belong to one single unit. The petrotectonic assemblage can provide informations about the tectonic setting where it was generated from. The structural style can exhibit the kinetic and kinematic processes. The form of ancient isogeotherm may reflect the ancient geothermal regime which is related to the tectonic mechanism. In general, the early Precambrian terrains suffered polymetamorphism and multiple structural deformation. The researches must be carried out for the distribution of paleogeotharm and m.tamo'phic facies and zones on the basis of recovering the early structural style with structural analysis method; then a relatively correct conclusion may be geined on the ancient geothermal regime. This method can be known as "Ancient Thermotectonic Analysis". Through the sythetical research, a real knowlege about the tectonic setting of early Precambrian mobile belt can be obtained.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. Tyre cost at Mount Morgan Limited had been 24% of the truck operating cost. Comprehensive tyre testing resulted in a reduction in tyre costs of about one third. A record of the evaluation techniques may enable the selection of tyres that are most suited to particular conditions. Rubber characteristics, rubber quantity, tyre design, road conditions, dump conditions and inflation pressure were found to be sig- nificant variables. Measurements of tyre temperatures at the breaker strip were used to select the tyre design and inflation pressure required for Mount Morgan Limited's conditions. Relugging of tyres was discontinued as a result of tyre testing.

The HYC mineral deposit at McArthur River is about 1.5 kilometres long by 1.0 kilometres wide and 55 metres thick, and contains 227 000 000 tonnes of ore of average grade 9.2% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 41 g/t Ag. Major studies have been carried out continuously since 1955 over the deposit and in the general region. This work is continuing. A small underground mine was developed by driving a decline tunnel to intersect the mineralization 80m below the surface. This provided a fully representative sample of the total deposit unaffected by weathering or oxidation, and was available for the major test program carried out in a pilot plant built to determine the full metallurgical charac- teristics of the ore. The pilot plant operations followed investigations by research institutions, both in Australia and overseas, into the problems of this ultra-fine grained ore. The ultra-fine grained nature of the ore required grinding to an average size of 95% passing 37 micro metres or 400 Tyler mesh. A major feasibility and environmental report was submitted to the government covering all aspects of a development program. The geological, engineering, metal- lurgical, economic, cultural and environmental submissions contained in this report were studied by external consult- ants employed by the government, who agreed with the conclusions that the McArthur HYC deposit is at present Uneconomic.

The use of coal as a fuel for heat and power generation has a long history. During the nineteenth century most of the present combus- tion technologies were pioneered, as shown in Table 1, This period was associated with the "golden age" of coal and its contribution of almost 80% of the world's energy demands in the early,1900s . The decline in the use of coal has been due to the transfer of the heavy transportation area to diesel power, the elimination of coal as a household fuel and the substitution of oil for coal in power plants. Coal remains the major fuel for the electric utility industry and the present paper will be concerned primarily with that application. Table 1 outlines the development of coal tech- nology with the parallel understanding of coal as a material and its behaviour during combus- tion. Clearly many developments in combustion technology have occurred in this century, although most of the processes had been invented in the nineteenth century. Also, the great expanse in coal research of the past few decades has led to a greater understanding of the coal combustion process.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a "telescoped" overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 401an length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation. A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has 25 rod and ball mills of various sizes installed in two Concentrators at Mount Isa. A continuing investigation into installation, design and materials of liners for these mills has been in progress since the early sixties. Both manual and mechanical methods of liner installation are used and described. Materials for the various applications have been evaluated, mainly by field trials. Design of liners has also been evaluated by field trials and the history of trials in No.4 Concentrator is given. The purpose of the investigation has been to reduce the cost of mill lining and the life of many linings has been greatly increased as a result of this work.

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has developed a facility for the static testing of full-scale ground support elements (Morton et al, 2007). The test facility consists of several stiff steel frames used to support the sample and a screw feed jack is used to load the sample. A large-scale punch test method has been developed to load various shotcrete configurations. The shotcrete is sprayed on to a rock substrate containing a centrally located circular disc. The rock and shotcrete sample is placed on to the sample frame and restrained on all sides. The circular disc is displaced at a constant rate by the screw feed jack which in turn loads the sample. Instrumentation measures the displacement and the load being applied to the sample through the loading disc. The testing method is described in detail and the results from the testing program are presented. The results show that it is possible through laboratory testing to simulate some of the mechanisms of shotcrete support reactions better than conventional beam and panel tests.
