Geological maps, data, and prospectivity analysis relevant to mineral exploration in New Zealand have recently been released. Regional-scale geological mapping is increasingly available for the country through the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand programme. Published QMAP sheets Greymouth, Wakatipu, Waitaki and Dunedin cover large areas of interest for mineral exploration companies. The QMAP geological data are also available in digital form for use with other digital datasets using GIS software. Crown Minerals, in cooperation with GNS, have completed two gold prospectivity studies; the first covering mesothermal gold in the South Island, and the second encompassing epithermal gold in northern New Zealand. These studies have defined areas of interest for these two mineralisation types and assembled geological, mineral occurrence and production, geochemical, geophysical, topographic and cultural data into projects for use with GIS software. Included are the results of prospectivity modeling for gold using these data and specific mineralisation models. The prospectivity studies and relevant data are freely available on CD through Crown Minerals and are intended to encourage mineral exploration in New Zealand.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. The Mahakipawa gold deposit is located 21 km northwest of Blenheim. It became the site of a small hardrock gold rush in 1889 following nearby alluvial gold discoveries in 1888. The study investigates the geology of the area of hard rock mining in the vicinity between Cullens and Waikakaho Creeks. The Marlborough Schist which hosts the gold depos, it consists of polydeformed greenschist facies quartzofeldspathic psammitic, pelitic and volcanigenic schist.

Sluice box operating practices in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and published work on sluice boxes are briefly reviewed. Some recent work on sediment entrainment mechanisms occurring in sluice boxes have also been described. In the light of this information, some drawbacks in the commonly adopted sluice box operating practices in PNG, and ways of overcoming them, are also highlighted.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research program being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the construction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipeline crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research program is discussed.

In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. The past twenty years have witnessed:-(a) The establishment of a flourishing iron and steel industry, with its attendant coking and by-product plant at two centres in New South Wales, namely, Newcastle and Port Kembla.(b) The establishment of an electrolytic zinc process at Risdon in Tasmania.*Presidential Address, Melbourne, 20th August, 1936.

IN a mine with any considerable output the economical handling and transport of ore underground is a matter of prime importance, and in the design or lay-out of a trucking system the question of what form the points and crossings are to take should be one of the first considered. Trucks may be moved from one line of rails to another by the following means: by flat sheets, with which may be coupled turn-tables, or by points and crossings. The latter class may be further divided into fixed and movable points.Flat sheets and turn-tables, owing to the time and skill needed by the trucker in using them, are seldom of great value with large tonnages, unless for purely temporary work, and the choice narrows down to one between fixed and movable points andcrossings. Both systems have their disadvantages - movable points being liable to jamb with dirt and get out of order, whilst with fixed points trucks may sometimes run over the points and capsize, or go on to the wrong line, though this is not of frequent occurrence. On the other hand. the fixed points are simple, easily laid, and strong, and there is no necessity for the trucker to work any levers, the truck being guided on to its new direction by screwing.Cast-iron points and crossings were first introduced into the North mine during the opening-up of the 950-ft. level, and the first arrangement was designed for a double turn-out in the main crosscut. Since then both the points and crossings have beenmodified several times, and it may be interesting to briefly outline the various forms through which they have passed, showing the reasons for the retention of some features and the rejection of others.

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

For low density materials such as coal, density-based fractionation of particles via the sink-float method is relatively simple due to the availability of liquids of suitable density; however, for high density minerals, suitable heavy liquids are less available and those that are available are expensive and pose significant hazards. At best, sink-float separation can be performed up to densities of 4400 kg/m3 with the use of Clerici’s solution at elevated temperatures. Hence the direct measurement of grade-recovery and density-partition curves is problematic. Therefore, in most cases, beneficiation plants must rely on methods such as QEMSCAN, density tracer particles or very limited information to guide them in the design and optimisation of their plants.This paper describes a density-fractionation method utilising laminar flow through a system of parallel inclined channels to generate a series of overflow fractions at different flow velocities. Here the particles are subject to precise hydrodynamic forces with minimal dispersion or mixing. The size distribution of each overflow fraction at a given flow velocity is obtained using a laser particle size analyser, and combined with a laminar flow model to deduce the corresponding density distribution. The paper describes the application of the method to measure the separation achieved using a REFLUX Classifier to obtain the corresponding feed, product and reject ‘washability curves’, and in turn the full partition surface. The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity. Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer. Having concluded that steaming coal in particular is likely to become even more important as a generator of base load electricity, the paper looks at the opportunities this presents for exporters such as Australia, and touches on some factors that could prevent development of those opportunities. This paper will concentrate on electrical energy. For the purposes of this paper, the Pacific Basin refers essentially to Australia, New Zealand and the Asian countries bordering the Western Pacific. As a supplier, Siberia is not included because, although it has great potential, it is thought that problems of climate, infrastructure and political restructuring will delay the realisation of that potential until the next century. Although it deals with the Pacific Basin region, where many countries are industrialising rapidly from a predominantly agricultural base, it looks at the experience of mature industrial DECD economies where their experiences seem relevant.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

In gold ores, the range of value disclosed by ordinary mine sampling is very wide, and the number of 'samples required for a reliable average is correspondingly great. Even where a large number of samples is available the weighted mean value of the samplesalmost invariably exceeds the true gold content. In operating mines this disparity is overcome by arbitrary reduction of high assays until reconciliation is achieved, but it is frequently necessary, especIallyin exploration, to base an estimate or to reach a decision on a relatively small number of samples from underground openings or even on a few drill hole intersections. In these circumstances, a decisive influence may be exercised by the weight allowed to high assays and to low grade intersections, both of which events are, of course, dependent on the metal distribution in the ore. Where sufficient data are available, statistical analysis will measure the risk involved, but as this information is seldom to be had, the final choice becomes largely a matter of personal judgment.With this problem in mind, a study was made some years ago of the distribution of values in four Western Australian gold ores, with the primary purpose of learning from actual ore-bodies of differing types, something of the metal distribution in the smallquantities of ore involved in individual routine mine samples, and of the importance in each case of high assays. Adequate and suitable data were available in .four cases, in three of which high assays were of frequent occurrence due to the presence of free gold. The results give concrete expression to well known differences of metal distribution, and it is proposed, firstly to record the observed distribution; secondly to examine some of the consequences of the differences in the distributions limd thirdly, to comment, in the light of this data, on the vexed question of the treatment of high assays. Standard statistical procedure was employed in the compilation of the data. The assays were classified by value into groups, each group covering a range of value of 1 dwt. per ton. Assays of less than 1.0 dwt. per ton form the first group; assays equal to or greater than 1.0 dwt. and less than 2.0 dwt. comprise the second group; those equal to or greater than 2.0 dwt. and less than 3.0 dwt. appear in the third group; and so on. Where the number of samples is large, it can be assumed that the mid-value of the group is the mean value of all the samples in the group, thus the mean values of the first three groups are 0.5 dwt., 1.5 dwt. and 2.5 dwt. respectively.The number of samples in the group is the frequency of the group, but for convenience of plotting this frequency is converted into percentage of all the samples in the series. It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. The Scanning Electron Microscope – Mineral Liberation Analyzer (SEM-MLA) laboratory, as part of the Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training (CREAIT) network of laboratories at Memorial University, NL, Canada, has recently published efforts towards increasing the throughput of automated mineralogy systems by producing single-step trans-vertical moulds, rather than traditional 30 mm polished epoxy moulds. Due to the small particle size of iron ore grains in the -200 mesh size fraction (<75 µm), not all of the surface area on a mould is needed for measurement in achieving good statistical representation. In a new study, trimming of the excess area of a mould results in a smaller sample and increases the quantity of unique samples that can fit in a newly designed trans-vertical adapter for a FEITM MLA 650 field emission gun (FEG) scanning electron microscope. The complete analysis, using a newly designed sample block holder capable of holding 98 samples, required 57 hours of running time where each sample had an average of 33?400 particles measured and identified. The analysis was calibrated to allow for off-line discrimination of hematite/magnetite. The calculated Fe-assay values derived from MLA results were compared to those from bulk sample chemical assay. This shows the Fe assay having a correlation coefficient of >0.99 when the particle count is greater than 20?000. This study represents the most expedient method yet reported to prepare well-polished samples and analyse them in a timely manner that can allow for quicker results in process mineralogy.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J and Baird, E, 2017. Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.
