Numerical modelling is an effective aid for the planning and design of underground coal mines. With funding from the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Program, CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has produced a workstation environment which will allow the Australian Coal Mining Industry access to a wide range of numerical design models. The emphasis is on usability and simplicity and the long-term aim is that the techniques should be used routinely at the mine site, so that, in the future, design of a new underground mine will routinely involve modelling of each proposed layout.Each of the five numerical analysis programs, FESOFt, FLAC, MNLAY, FEBLK and UDEC has both strengths and weaknesses. Some analyses with each program demonstrate areas when; observed in situ behaviour in underground coal mines has been successfully modelled, and the results of site monitoring provide a basis for comparison with the predictions of numerical models.

Continuous improvement using six sigma methodologies commonly follows the DMAIC methodology of define, measure, analyse, improve and control. A key requirement in the use of this approach is to ensure that data is trusted, validated and contextual. In today’s production environments it is common to find disparate technology comprising the system architecture and highly customised interfaces between the various technology layers. This complexity often leads to inaccurate data presented at the operations management layer or worse, data that is not trusted. Identifying defects and making corrective actions cannot be efficiently carried out unless trusteddata can be easily obtained with a production context. It is also common to find that disparate systems of this nature present information in multiple ways and through multiple presentation systems. This paper discusses how the use of web-based technologies in an integrated technology stack can aid the accessibility, accuracy and trust of data used in decision-making and also how a unified visualisation environment can lead to greater operator efficiency.

The implementation, during recent years, of the concept of distributing chilled water to improve cooling at the working faces represents a very important innovation for the mining world. In a logical extension to that concept it has been recognized that distribution of the cooling water at high pressure would provide a potential source of energy for driving water powered hydraulic machinery such as rockdrills, water jets for moving rock, and support props, in the workings. With this in mind, the Research Organization of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is pursuing the development of such a dual system that will provide cooling in a deep mine and, at the same time, drive hydraulic machinery. A comprehensive design of such a system has been completed and has shown the concept to be entirely feasible technically using technologies currently available. A pilot system is working in a mine shaft 2000 m deep giving a pressure of 20 MPa at the bottom of the shaft and distributing the cold water into the workings at a pressure of 17 MPa. The system shows considerable potential for improving existing mining methods and will open the way for the development of new mining methods for deep mining operations.

Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. The Pasminco Century Mine (PCML) is located 250 kilometres north-north-west of Mt Isa in Queensland. As one of the worldÆs largest zinc mines, PCML comprises mining and milling operations at Lawn Hill, concentrate filtering and shipping facilities at Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a 304 km slurry pipeline connecting the two operations.Mineralisation at Century occurs in the upper part of the Lawn Hill formation and is comprised of siltstones, shale and sandstone. Pyrite occurs immediately above the mineralised sequence, and throughout the footwall carbonaceous shale forming the lower proportion of the deposit. Zinc predominantly occurs as sphalerite (ZnS) and lead as galena (PbS). These sulfides are very fine-grained and may oxidise rapidly upon exposure. The pyrite, sphalerite and galena are the main potential sources of acid rock drainage (ARD) or heavy metal leachate at the mine site.To minimise the generation of ARD in the waste rock dumps, they are constructed in a specific manner and waste rock is classified into the following three classes based on competence and acid forming/consuming capabilities:Class 1: Competent rock, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 2: Non-competent, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 3: Acid-forming material. The generalised Waste Rock Dump Design for current operations comprises an outer zone of Class 1 material and inner zone with Class 2 and 3 material. Limestone is the Class 1 material used for both its structural support and acid neutralising capacity. Reserves of limestone at the mine site are limited. Net acid generation (NAG) tests confirm that a mix of limestone and shales can be net acid consuming.Field based and laboratory based trials have been established at PCML to quantify blending levels of limestone and shale that will produce leachates both neutral in pH and low in metal/salt concentrations. This paper will discuss the first six months results (of a two-year sampling program) from the trials.

Prediction of large-scale underground opening stability in quite complex mining circumstances is being undertaken on a routine basis at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) Broken Hill, Australia. A three- dimensional numerical modelling technique has been developed that gives good correspondence with the observed behaviour in many stopes. New insights into the rock mechanics of under- ground mining are flowing from this work. The modelling practice can be taught to engineers in a reasonable time-frame. In-house computing facilities including graphics workstations are needed. The RMS software is designed to be user-friendly and very robust.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

Draglines have found wide application in strip mining coal seams down to 60m depth. A research Project funded through NERDDC has been underway during the past two years investigating the application of large draglines loading overburden into hoppers feeding into conveyor systems or off-highway trucks. This paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations and covers overburden characteristics, bucket spotting con- trol, bucket design, conceptual hopper systems, system application at representative mine sites, and broad process comparison. The studies have initiated new concepts in the extended use of draglines at deeper strip- ping depths. Alternate arrangements for dragline bucket rigging and bucket control aspects of dragline stripping operations offer productivity improvements. Extended use of existing draglines includes, draglines dumping into hoppers which feed large trucks or conveyors, trigger dump buckets rigging arrangements, and rear dump dragline buckets with integral grizzly bars. The paper details these suggestions, and points to specific areas where the most productive applied research is anticipated. Mine planning considerations detail the factors involved in selecting dragline bench heights in association with hopper operations.

As modern techniques of Petroleum Exploration and Development are rela-tively new in Australia,2 the alien terms "Mud Logging" and "Core Analysis" will bear explanation. Mud Logging and Core Analysis are two of the Petroleum. Industryts most useful "tools" in the successful search for, and development of, commercial oil and gas deposits. Modern Mud Logging could be more accu-xately termed "Drill Cuttings and Mud Gas Analysis". Presently, mud-logging has its greatest application in exploratory wells where subsurface geologic control is at a-minimum.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. A marked similarity existed between at least 7 of the 10 type seam sequences formed. The configurations of the vitrite-plus-clarite contents of the plies of 95 per cent of the seams could be formed from different arrangements of 3 basic sequences: (i) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-rich and an upper vitrite-poor ply; (ii) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-poor and an upper vitrite-rich ply; and (iii) a four-ply sequence of 3 plies with vitrite-plus- clarite decreasing upwards, terminating in a vitrite- rich ply. The third basic sequence was very similar to a succession described for some British Carboniferous coals. Eighty per cent of the Australian Permian coal seams studied began with the first (i) basic type of sequence and are interpreted as originating in peat- forming areas which became progressively drier. More than half the seams were formed in an area with a stable depositional surface level which was subject to oscillations of small amplitude.. Many (30%) were formed in an area with a steadily rising depositional surface level.

Biomineralisation is the process by which microorganisms mediate and catalyse inorganic reactions so as to form new mineral assemblages. The goal of biomineralisation as a remediation tool is to control microbial processes and their environment so as to sequester and immobilise specific toxic metals within exceptionally strong bonds of neo-formed mineral assemblages. In this way, the bound metals are no longer mobile within a geological time-scale. Applied biomineralisation uses microorganisms, which are isolated from a metal waste environment and are selected for their ability to rapidly catalyse neo-mineral development from dissolved or leachable metals. A typical waste environment will contain microbes that contribute to the mobilisation of metal contaminants as well as microbes that possess the potential for remineralising available metals. Selection and augmenting the correct combination of bacteria and eliminating the competing mineral degrading reactions are the key to applying biomineralisation as an in situ remediation process. Applied biomineralisation harnesses the microbesÆ ability to stabilise toxic soluble metals into non-mobile mineralassemblages. This paper will discuss and demonstrate the biomineralisation process through several case studies including the Summitville mine site in Colorado, the McCoy-Cove mine in Nevada, the Argonaut mine in California, and an historic lead site in Crooksville, Ohio.

The Dutwa Nickel Project is a nickel laterite atmospheric leach project located in Tanzania that has been under development by African Eagle Resources plc (2012). A bankable feasibility study (BFS) has been progressed to evaluate mining of the resource (107 Mt at 0.92 per cent Ni) followed by hydrometallurgical processing on-site to make a mixed nickel-cobalt intermediate product. The unique relatively high silica contents in the Dutwa deposits, as opposed to limonite, which is more commonly occurring in nickel laterites, presented the possibility for beneficiation of the ores to enhance the leach feed nickel grades and provide economic benefits in terms of operating and capital cost efficiencies.Geometallurgical relationships, based on the results of an extensive variability metallurgical test work program for beneficiation and leaching, were developed for the BFS, which resulted in an improved understanding of ore classifications within the deposit and their responses. The geometallurgical information obtained has been instrumental in making key preliminary techno-economic decisions, such as forecasting whether or not mined material should be beneficiated and was ultimately used to drive the mine plan towards the prioritisation of areas within the deposits that delivered the best cost efficiencies and overall project economic outcomes.CITATION:Elkington, T, Lorenzen, L and Czerny, C, 2013. Soil covers for mine waste are subject to changes in structure as a result of root development, and wet/dry or freeze/thaw cycling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the hydraulic conductivity of three non-compacted clay covers over time. The covers are located on a sodic/saline overburden fill (30-Dump) at the Syncrude oilsands mine in Fort MacMurray, Alberta, Canada. Monitoring of these covers for temperature, matric suction, and water content by the University of Saskatchewan has been ongoing for more than three years. The three covers (D1, D2, and D3) were constructed in 1999 and are 50 cm, 35 cm, and 100 cm thick. The covers are comprised of a surface layer of reclaimed peat/mineral mix over a secondary reclaimed mineral soil (glacial till or glaciolacustrine clay), placed over a sloping shale surface. Field measurements of hydraulic conductivity within the secondary layer were obtained using a Guelph Permeameter during the 2000, 2001, and 2002 summer field seasons. Repeated measurements were made within the D1, D2, and D3 covers at depths of approximately 40 cm, 30 cm, and 60 cm, respectively. The values of hydraulic conductivity for the covers were similar to each other during each of the field study seasons. The mean hydraulic conductivity of the secondary layer increased every year: 2.5 + 10-6 cm/sec to 2.1 + 10-4 cm/sec to 4.3 + 10-4 cm/sec from 2000 to 2001 to 2002. Soil temperature data shows that one freeze/thaw cycle occurred each year at the measurement depths.

Geotechnically massive strata may lead to a host of problems during longwall mining. These include windblast on initial goaf fall, sudden loadings on powered supports, periodic weightings, fractures that may propagate to surface, and extreme subsidence problems. It is essential to identify these problems prior to mining and to appropriately deal with them. The problem is essentially that the rock mass does not breakup evenly and when it does so it tends to produce large blocks which may suddenly move. The rock types that produce these problems tend to be massive sandstones, massive siltstones and sometimes igneous sills. The fundamental problem with these is that they do not breakup readily. This is because the ratio of stress they are subject to compared to their strength is low. Thus, the shallower mines with lower stresses are more subject to this problem than deep highly stressed ones with similar strength rock.

Trucks are the primary means of bulk material transport in Open Pit hard rock mines worldwide. They are considered to be the most- flexible system available. The large number of trucks used in some mines provides flexibility. Spare units allow for the reduced availability of the single units. Trucks have however very poor energy efficiency. Only 40% of the consumed energy is for transport of the payload, the remaining energy is required to move the dead load of the trucks. With the increase in cost, pressure, mine operators are now looking for alternative methods to make their operation more economical. Energy conservation and increasing haulage distances and uphill haulage are major factors in many well established operations. New methods have already proven themselves as more economical alternatives. Belt conveyors are an alternative means of transport with much higher energy efficiency. They use up to 80% of the consumed energy for transportation of the payload. Energy costs for conveyors are 30% of the energy costs for trucks on level transport and as little as 15% for elevating payloads. Belt conveyors require much fear spare parts and wear components than trucks. A factor of one to two times applies for level transport and ten to twenty times for uphill transport.

It is no longer possible to establish a quarry on the most convenient hill then abandon the site, leaving a scar if the stone or sand in the deposit is found to be unsatisfactory. Before approval is given to operate a new quarry, the relevant authorities require a detailed plan of operations from commencement to final rehabilitation. To prepare this plan, a thorough know- ledge of the quality and size of the deposit is required. To obtain this information, the industry must use the most modern techniques available. Many examples can be given showing problems which have affected the smooth operation of a quarry for many years because the initial exploration was poorly carried out. The factors which must-be considered when exploring a deposit are detailed in this Paper.

Conventional models, based on pulp kinetics, were regressed directly to steady-state data from a nine-stage platinum flotation plant, to provide a basis for optimisation studies. æFroth factorsÆ were used to characterise the froth in each stage and a ædepressant factorÆ was used for gangue minerals, to account for addition of depressant to the cleaners. These factors improved the fit, but differences between plant and model of up to 50 per cent were still present in a number of streams in the cleaning circuit. A new model was developed, which incorporated two rate constants for the recycle of particles from the froth. These parameters provided a workable approximation of the distribution of probabilities of particles being recycled in plant cells, depending upon where particles appeared at the surface. The feed streams were characterised by two pulp kinetic parameters and the above recycle parameters, for all minerals and all stages. The fit to the data was improved very significantly, when compared to the use of conventional pulp-based models with several pulp rate parameters. This relatively simple model did not require additional data from batch tests and it was suitable for plant simulations.Simulations of various strategies for plant operation were tested, allowing the simulator to vary the concentrate flows from all or some of the stages, in order to maximise platinum recovery. The simulator was imbedded in an automatic optimiser and constraints on chrome content or mass flow of final concentrate were used. The simulations of the existing circuits demonstrated that an improvement in recovery, (for a constant concentrate mass) of about 0.5 per cent was possible, by optimising all concentrate flows. A significant reduction in the flow of scavenger concentrate and an increase in the recycle flows in the cleaners were noted. The results of simulations of various changes to the circuit configuration are also discussed. An increase in recovery of 1.4 per cent (for constant concentrate mass) has been achieved in recent simulations, through circuit changes. However, it was necessary to keep the mass pull of concentrate, per unit area, within typical limits.
