As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M. The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.

This paper deals with some innovations and current proposals for the treatment of gold ores and considers the possibilities of incorporating new developments in new or revised ore treatment flowsheets. The main topics considered are I. typical practice in relation to the size of gold particles, 2. concentration of coarse gold, 3. leaching reagents, 4. in situ leaching, 5. heap leaching, 6. carbon-in-pulp adsorption, and 7. treatment of complex ores (gold in pyrite, gold tellurides, and carbon-containing ores).

For many crushed aggregate producers will the finest fraction minus 4 mm represent a problem. The fine material will fetch a much lower price than the coarser products, and may even be difficult to sell in some markets. The blasting operation will strongly influence the generation of fines after both blasting and crushing. Drill hole deviation together with the drill hole diameter, powder factor and velocity of detonation are the most important blasting parameters with regard to the generation of fines. Drill hole deviation is often ignored, and many operators will just reduce the drilling pattern in order to avoid hard bottom and an excessive number of boulders. The paper presents a technical and economic analysis of how drill hole deviation will lead to an increased generation of fines in crushed aggregate production. The analysis shows that the loss of sales revenues will be much higher than the extra costs for drilling and blasting caused by compensating for drill hole deviation by putting in more holes.

Alternatively are they a necessary evil'? Exploration geologists are a much higher profile group but then again the higher they are the bigger they Bill. At a mine site they are reluctantly being accepted as equals by mining engineers given the requirements of the `Code' in the reporting of Ore Reserves. How best can mining geologists service their customers? Are more revealing questions to be answered in who are their customers? In the past mining geologists lived isolated existences pouring over plans and sections, now with user-friendly software packages available and the use of LAN, mining geologists and mining engineers talk electronically - God forhid what the future might hying - they might even talk to accountants and metallurgists!

Structural Controls Interpretation of regional aeromagnetics, radiometrics and satellite image data has identified three structural domains (fig 2): The Fairyland Domain: a general N - S structural trend. The Cracow Domain: a general NW - SE structural trend. The Bald Mountain Domain: a general N- S structural trend. Known mineralisation is confined to the Cracow Domain in which there occurs two major NW - SE trending fault zones. The Cracow Fault Zone (CFZ) and the Immy Creek Fault Zone (ICFZ). Enhanced detail of the CFZ (fig 3) shows three main structural trends within it: NW-SE structures which include the mineralised White Hope South fault zone and the Golden Mile fault zone. NE-SW structures which have an influence on mineralisation in the Orange Creek, Fernyside and Golden Plateau areas. N-S structures comprising several major structural zones.

To the layman or the casual in- vestor, the critical problems in the mining industry appear to rest on the questions of finding and developing an orebody. The high cost of finding a major orebody suggests that the search is the only matter of real concern. However, the resulting operations which hopefully will provide a profit- able return, depend very heavily on the quality of the servicing that the particular industry receives. Once the mining venture has been established with the necessary plant, equipment and infrastructure, the routine servicing becomes an important function of the operations.

Three major phases of sedimentation have been recognised; one related to the development of the Tasman Geosyncline froi'n. The steeply dipping Mammoth orebody is mined by Gunpowder Copper Limited using a sub- level uphole bench stoping method at a mining rate of 350 000 tonnes per year. of three per cent copper ore. Access to the mine, is provided by 1 in 9 decline which spirals in the footwall connect-, ing all the sublevels, thus maximising mobility and accessibility of trackless mining equipment Sublevels are driven in ore off cross- cuts from the decline every 15 metres vertic- ally. Sublevel drives are stripped out to widths up to 18 metres before cutoff slots are mined at each end. A two boom fan drilling jumbo is used to drill inclined rows of holes to the floor of the sublevel above. Two or three rows are fired at a time which allows broken ore and remnants from the level above to be mucked out by rubber tyred LHD equipment to the brow. Ore widths of up to 80 metres are en- countered at lower levels where ring drilling from longitudinal drill drives will break ore to a draw point system below. Development is carried out with three boom rubber tyred jumbos. All haulage from the mine is in 20 and 35 tonne rear dump trucks. All aspects of the mining operation are discussed including ventilation, pumping and drainage, services and future planning.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

An exploratory study has been carried out on the applicability of pre-nucleated feed in pelletising operations. Measurements of the pellet quality parameters showed that iron ore pellets prepared in the above manner, generally meet the specifications required in international pellet traffic. Several potential economic advantages, such as reduced grinding power requirements, increased line productivity and shorter start-up periods, became apparent during the study.

The Water Act 2000 includes provisions to manage the take of overland flow water. Overland flow water is water that runs across the land after rainfall either before it enters a watercourse, after it leaves a watercourse as floodwater, or after it rises to the surface naturally from underground. To ensure adequate environmental flows and long-term security for water users, it is necessary to balance the amount of water taken as overland flow water and the amount left to flow into watercourses. A water resource plan made under the Water Act 2000 establishes the basis for the sustainable management of this type of water. Of the water resource plans that have been prepared for Queensland catchments, six include provisions to manage the take of overland flow water. This paper discusses some of the common features of these plans and the management approaches adopted. The paper identifies and explains key aspects of the Water Act 2000 framework for managing the take of overland flow water by the mining industry. In particular it explains key concepts of this framework, such as the ability to take overland flow water using existing works, uses of overland flow water that a water resource plan permits, situations where a specific entitlement under the Water Act 2000 is required, and the means for controlling works that take overland flow water. Future initiatives for the regulation and management of overland flow water are then identified and particular challenges for the mining industry associated with using overland flow water highlighted.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". If my story has such a message, it could perhapsbe construed as reinforcing the oft-repeated dictums, true or false, that "history repeats itself" or "man never learns".Coal mining is by far our oldest major Australian industry except for agriculture. Hoisting ropes are constructed of wires and strands positioned helically around the axis. This helical positioning causes that, in the rope loaded at the end with the weight Q, the longitudinal displacement u, axial force P, torsional displacement v and constant torsional moment M are generated. More over, the proper weight of the rope q gives the force acting along the axis of the rope. This force changes its value from 0 at the bottom to qL at the top. This force gives, along its length, a variable torsional moment making the rope rotate. During the movement of the conveyance downwards the falling part of the rope rotates, which makes it untwist on the section up to the half-depth of the shaft and twist on the other half-depth. As the result, the twisting lay of the rope changes increasing in the upward direction and decreasing downwards. The angle of twist of the strands changes in an apposite way. When moving upwards, the uplifted rope does not twist and retains its state of deformation up to the moment when it passes over the pulley. Next, the cycle of untwisting and twisting repeats during the movement of the other conveyance downwards. This phenomenon is known from mining practice. It was also analysed, in the works of Glushko (1966) and Popowicz (1963).

Mark Westfield, writing in The Australian on 16 May 1994 stated: The role of the independent expert is crucial to Australia's investment system. When it falls down, there can be very dramatic consequences. The scope of these consequences was dramatically illustrated in the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v. Hutcheson (1983) 8 ACLR 123 when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million, well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be sought in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for the result of the appeal rested on whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered, rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability. Thus: Those who prepare experts' reports in company cases carry a heavy moral responsibility, whatever their legal duties may be... Unless high standards are observed by those who prepare these reports, there is a danger that systems established for the protection of the investing public will, in fact, operate to their detriment through reliance placed on those reports and on the reputations of those who furnish them. In lending his name, the expert will often, as in this case, be lending a name to conjure With.

Natroalunite is one of colouring minerals in kaolin. In this investigation, natroalunite, on which Ca(II) was adsorbed, was flocculated by HPAM and kaolin was depressed in suspension. The adsorption of Ca(II) on the natroalunite surface was studied by zeta-potential measurement and Auger Electron Spectroscopy analysis. Ca(II) was adsorbed more on the natroalunite surface than on the kaolin surface. The mechanism of Ca(II) adsorption was considered to be chemical adsorption on natroalunite and to be physical adsorption on kaolin. It has been found that Na6P6O18 and Na2Si04 can strongly affect Ca(II) adsorption on the surface of kaolin, but weakly on the surface of natroalunite. The effects of degree of hydrolysis and the molecular weight of HPAM, the effect of pH and the effect of Ca(II) have been studied. The kaolin ore, containing SO3 1.05 per cent has been processed with this method. The products only containing S03 0.36 per cent and the weight ratio of concentrate 52.27 per cent were Obtained.
