Acidic reductive leaching is one of the best known and most widely employed chemical processes for beneficiating minerals of industrial interest. Conventional acidic leaching with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), employed to bleach industrial minerals used in the production of ceramics, glassware, paper etc, does not always allow products of high quality to be obtained. In the work reported here two reducing agents, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid, have been employed in a medium acidified by means of sulphuric acid. Continuous systematic tests have been performed on a kaolin sample containing 0.8 per cent Fe2O3, adopting various operating parameters such as, leaching time, temperature and reagent concentration. In each case the total quantity of bi- and trivalent iron dissolved was ascertained. Removal of 80 per cent and 100 per cent of iron with ascorbic and oxalic acid respectively was obtained, while less than one per cent of iron was dissolved in the presence of sulphuric acid only. Products having a very good degree of whiteness (92 - 94 per cent) were obtained, whereas with sodium dithionite the degree of whiteness was in the 85 to 88 per cent range. The best conditions identified were applied to a sample of quartz for the removal of ferric impurities.

Declines for both access and rock haulage are replacing shafts for mining relatively shallow deposits of down to 1000 m below surface. Where the orebody does not outcrop and where surface access may be restricted, it is often necessary to drive long dead end headings before a connection can be made back to surface and a ventilation circuit created. In hot tropical areas and where large diesel powered equipment is used for mining, heat may also be a problem at these relatively shallow depths. The normal design criteria based on statutory limits and good practice used to evaluate ventilation and cooling requirements in terms of air velocity, dust, gases, diesel exhaust dilution, re-entry after blasting and heat stress are described in this paper. These are then used to design and cost alternative auxiliary ventilation systems that include leakage based on general fan performance curves and typical duct systems. The implications of the current European Community recommendations regarding nitrous fumes are also briefly considered. The actual problem relates to a 2100 m long decline that may have to be extended to 3000 m long without a connection to surface or through ventilation and is located in a hot tropical area where the surface wet bulb temperatures may exceed 25¦C for more than a third of the summer period. Once the preliminary ventilation design is completed, the auxiliary ventilation system can be modelled and simulations undertaken that incorporate heat and moisture transfer routines with the objective of determining the cooling load and amount of refrigeration required. Cognisance is taken of cyclic diesel operations and the thermal flywheel effect of the surrounding rock on the wet and dry bulb temperatures resulting from these operations.A suitable modular cooling system located at the portal is described and optimised with capital and operating costs of both the ventilation and cooling systems provided.

Vertical crater retreat mining is being used at Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated, Limited for pillar recovery between previously mined and filled stopes. In order to increase productivity in the older lead lode areas of the mine, particularly in the lower grade sections around the keel of the orebody, score form of longhole stoping was considered necessary.Due to poor ground conditions in the country rock surrounding the ore and the requirement to provide sane wall support during mining, primary VCR mining has been utilised in these areas.At Zinc Corporation, several stopes have thus far been mined by a hybrid longhole stripping - VCR method.

There are many compelling reasons why correct sampling schemes should be standard practice in the mining industry, yet there are numerous examples where poor sampling practices are known to exist in the business yet permitted to continue. It is not just technical issues that can be ascribed to the reasons for the continued use of incorrect methods. This paper proposes non-technical reasons why incorrect sampling practices continue, and identifies potential ways to overcome them.

"Estimation of stress state as well as elastic modulus is important for the prediction of a rock slope deformation in an open pit mine since it can strongly influence the mining-induced deformation of the rock slope. This study applies a method to evaluate regional stress state and Young’s modulus by analysing the mining-induced deformation of ground. The effect of changes in regional strain state due to tectonic plate motion can be accounted for using the proposed method. Mining-induced deformation can manifest itself as changes in ground surface geometry resulting from mining activity. There are three underlying factors that can contribute to the deformation: displacement induced by the effect of gravity displacement induced by the effect of horizontal regional strain incremental change in the horizontal regional strain. The relative displacement arising from the mining excavation at the Torigatayama limestone mine in Japan has been measured by Global Positioning System (GPS). Both the regional stress state and Young’s modulus were estimated by back analysis of the change in distance between GPS stations using a 3D finite element method. It was shown that the reliability of the estimation improved with an increase in displacement due to mining progression. It was also shown that values for Poisson’s ratios of less than 0.10 are reasonable estimates with values for Young’s modulus between about 5?GPa and 10 GPa. The magnitude and direction of the maximum compressive stress in the district surrounding the Torigatayama mine were estimated to be between -6.4 MPa and -4.4 MPa and around N25E respectively.CITATION:Kodama, J, Sasaki, T, Fukuda, D, Kaneko, K, Fujii, Y and Kudo, R, 2014. Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

Times are changing for the mining industry. Civil society is demanding that miners pay more attention to the ways they impact on, and engage with, communities around their mines. Miners, in turn, are being forced to adapt and learn new social skills for which they were not originally trained. They are doing so in the middle of a broad resources boom, which is adding short-term operating challenges at the same time as miners need to be developing thoughtful solutions to longer term community issues. This paper examines a number of the issues that now loom on the horizon of mining companies. These include: human resources challenges and the crisis in minerals education; continuing community and social expectations of the resources industry and the impacts they will have, for example, on product stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions and the use of increasingly precious water resources; and current impediments to mineral exploration spending.It is concluded that the greatest challenge for the minerals industry is to develop a stronger cadre of local leaders and for the larger global miners to empower their local management to take on stronger public leadership responsibilities. There is a need for executive leadership to remember both the longer term and shorter term cyclical nature of the mining industry in developing solutions to community problems. Above all there is a compelling case for mining industry leaders to be more actively engaged with the wider community in the resolution of these issues.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. THE area of the State of New South Wales is not great, nevertheless it has very large and important Mineral Resources. This is the more noticeable when the values of the annual mineral production from the individual States of the Commonwealth arecompared with the value of the New South Wales production. The principal minerals mined now are not gold, copper, and tin, as they were in the early years following the gold rush of 1851, the centre of gravity of commercial mineral activity having moved to coal and "oil-shale," water, limestone (with cement), silver-lead-zinc cadmium, sulphur, slate and other building and ornamental stone, road materials, and clays.From small areas totalling only 650 sq. miles, coal to the extent of 311,000,000 tons, valued at £151,000,000, has been won.The estimate of actual and probable reserves by the Mines Department within an area of less than 1000 sq. miles is about 14,000,000,000 tons, while the potential reserves within the remaining 15,500 sq. miles of concealed coal fields must be enormous. Even taking into account only the actual and pI:obable reserves in the 1000 sq. miles known, and assuming a depletion at the rate of 350,000,000 tons a year, or somewhat greater than that of the British Isles at present, and assuming an average value of £1 a ton, with money at 5% compound interest, then the present value of this coal (40 years of depletion) would be £5,575,000,000 approximately: truly an enormous present value for a business of 40 years, dealing only with 1000 sq. miles of country. The location of the main coal basin in New South Wales is one of great strategic importance. It lies almig and near a seaboard, with excellent facilities for anchorage; the coal is of very high quality, and is readily accessible; the climate is admirable. Were this same coal at Port Darwin, its commercial importance would not be be pronounced.

China has been producing gold for more than 4000 years with gold production increasing substantially since the 1980s, from about 25 tonnes in 1980 to some 160 tonnes in 1998. More than 80 per cent of the gold production is from East China. However, complete information on eastern China gold has been rarely reported internationally. This is a general overview on the tectonics and metallogeny of gold deposits in East China. The geology of these gold deposits is compiled mainly from data and information reported in China, and is also based on the authorÆs work in China from 1974 to 1986 and a recent visit to China.

A research and testing facility has been developed at Simtars to allow the spontaneous combustion testing of coal on a large scale. In this adiabatic reactor, the coal particle sizing is closer to that which could be found in the goaf and therefore the reaction is more likely to simulate the underground situation. This allows aspects of the spontaneous combustion process and methods for detecting a heating to be investigated which cannot be done in an operational mine. Up to 18 tonnes of run of mine or crushed coal is loaded into the reactor and allowed to self-heat while the temperature and gas profiles within the coal pile are monitored. The gases evolved from the coal are analysed using a fixed gas monitor system and gas chromatography to determine which of the common mine fire indicators and ratios can be used to predict the onset and progress of coal heatings. Benchmarking of the inherent propensity of a coal to spontaneously combust at both the large- and laboratory-scale is also possible by comparing the sample against previously tested samples. It has been found that the coal particle size affects both the time it takes for the coal to react and the location of the developing heating. The heatings generate approximately one metre from the inlet but in the crushed coal case do not progress to an advanced heating stage until the æhot spotÆ migrates towards the coal surface where there is an increased oxygen supply. Physical properties such as the compressive strength of the coal also affect the heating size and the time it takes for a heating to develop. Higher strength coals appear to oxidise more slowly and therefore take longer to self-heat as oxidation of the coal is the heat-generating step in the spontaneous combustion process. The best indicators of the state of the heating were found to be CO make and GrahamÆs ratio which are independent of air flow. Investigation of a potential spontaneous combustion should begin as soon as the CO make or GrahamÆs ratio exceed the background levels. The results from the tests undertaken on a number of Queensland and NSW coals are reported here together with the implications for the mining industry.

An empirical method of estimating dense rock (D.R.E.) equivalent volumes erupted as airfall tephra, described in a companion paper in this volume, is elaborated, and its accuracy discussed. Estimates obtained from a single eruption can be classified as to whether they show positive, negative, or constant relative dispersion. For positively dispersed tephras (estimated volumes increasing with distance), this procedure improves the accuracy of the method. The technique is applied to selected andesitic tephras erupted from Egmont Volcano, New Zealand, during the last 28 000 years, which are found to range in volume from about 1.5 x 107 m3 up to about 2.4 x 108 m3 D.R.E. With a factor of about 16 between the smallest and largest volumes, this contrasts sharply with the rhyolite volcanoes in New Zealand, where the difference factor is usually of the order of 100. The largest tephra eruptions at Egmont are small compared to the largest debris avalanches, which have exceeded 1010 m3 (10 km3) in volume.The magnitude versus frequency relationship, calculated using a maximum likelihood method, establishes the limits of eruption magnitude at Mt Egmont as 107 to 109 m3 D.R.E. For some volcanoes, the magnitude-frequency relationship changes with time, owing to clustering of eruptions, separated by long dormant intervals. Ngauruhoe Volcano, New Zealand, is an example. Within eruptive episodes, the mean interval between eruptions of >_ 105 m3 is about 0.9 ¦ 0.65 years. The mean interval between eruptive episodes in which >_ 106 m3 is erupted, including episodes in which this volume is erupted gradually, is about 25.8 ¦ 6.6 years, and the mean dormant interval between all episodes is about 5.2 ¦ 3.0 years. At present Ngauruhoe is in an unusually prolonged dormant period, 50% longer than any in the historical record, since 1839.

Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. Block caving is an important mining method for the future economic exploitation of large, low-grade, steeply dipping orebodies. While block caving is not a new method, there are still many unknowns surrounding the mechanics driving the process, particularly as we are forced into deeper, higher-stressed and stronger ore deposits. The caving industry is desperate to provide some explanation behind the myths of caving geomechanics to better predict and manage current caves and caves of the future. Large amounts of data are collected to help understand caving, but it is not fully utilised and current approaches for analysing the data are capacity limited. The application of virtual reality and scientific visualisation (VRSV) technology to visualise and analyse block caving is a critical future component in the assessment toolbox. VRSV enables large, complex, multidimensional data sets to be analysed and the power of human visual problem solving processes to be utilised. Block caving is a complex system and needs to be analysed as a system, rather than looking at individual factors one at a time. A software module has been developed at UNSW Australia for use in the advanced visualisation interactive environment for analysis of the block cave mining system (BCMS). This fully immersive, 3D virtual assessment tool shows exciting potential and is used to analyse the BCMS with a close linkage to time (ie the chronological occurrence of data). This tool will enable a true investigation into the cause and effect relations within the BCMS. Current research is investigating Newcrest Mining Limited’s Ridgeway Deeps operation and is aiming to turn some of the cause/effect relationships into increased geomechanics understanding to provide improvements to ground control management. Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

There are many physical factors that can affect the self-heating rate of coal. The presence of seam gas has often been referred to as inhibiting coal self-heating due to the limited access of oxidation sites created by the presence of the gas adsorbed on the coal pores. Similarly, the presence of bed moisture in the coal also acts as an inhibitor of oxidation by blocking access of air into the pores. Gas drainage of a coal seam prior to mining removes both gas and moisture from the seam. Bulk coal self-heating tests in a two-metre column on both gassy, as-mined and gas-drained, dried high volatile bituminous coal show that removal of gas and moisture from the coal accelerates the rate of self-heating to thermal runaway from 8.5 days to 4.25 days, from a start temperature of 30¦C, with an airflow of 0.25 L/min. The corresponding gas evolution pattern for each of these situations is different. Therefore, it is necessary to take this change in coal condition into consideration when developing a spontaneous combustion management plan.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

In order to shorten the time taken to com- plete shield tunnel excavation work, reduce labor costs and to improve safety, an automatic assembly robot system for the segments used has been developed. It was developed in the three years from 1982 until 1984. An experimental assembly system for concrete segments (outer diameter:.3.55m) has been thoroughly tested to confirm that these segments can be fed and assembled automatically (Fig. 1, 2). This report outlines the robot which will be put into practical use in the near future. The robot senses the position of already assem- bled segments by means of position sensors, controls the position and the attitude of the segment to be assembled to allow bolt hole positioning, and completes the automatic assembly of a se;nent by automatically tighten- ing bolts. The six segments which make up one ring can be automatically assembled in about 25 minutes.

Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.
