On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

Distinguished guests ladies and Gentlemen. As many of you know, before I became a Labour Member of Parliament, I had an unusual career path for a politician, in that I spent quite a few years working in the business community. In other words, I was mainstreamed before I was institutionalised. Given that some of this time was spent working for the then Macraes Mining Company Limited, now Gold and Resource Developments NL, I feel that I may have a perspective on how things are seen, on both sides of the fence. In terms of public perception and esteem I am not sure which career option was the step up and which was the step down. So far what I have found very familiar, is that in both roles there is a gulf between the reality and the perception of that reality - a gulf that is both huge and hard to bridge. I think it is a point worth making here amongst another busy industry cluster, that we can all too easily get so embroiled in the day to day activities, that we lose sight of how this might look to those running on a different treadmill. I can still remember scratching my head at the beginning of some days, as I worked to get new mining projects started that I knew were going to bring real jobs and economic benefit to New Zealand, but ending the day feeling like I may instead have been proposing bringing back both strip mining and slavery. If I learnt one valuable lesson out of that time it was this: .... mining has become so publicly demonised on the road to ecological nirvana, that even attempting a lucid dialogue on mining issues, with some, is incredibly difficult.

Purification of Nickel and Cobalt from Heap Leaching Effluents Using Ion Exchange Resins A comparative study among several chelating resins for purification of a heap leaching effluent from a nickel laterite ore has been finished. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate (IDA) and bis-picolylamine (Bis-PA) functional groups, from different suppliers, have been evaluated for their selectivity and loading capacities for nickel and cobalt over impurities. The two evaluated IDA resins, Amberlite IRC 748 and Monoplus TP 207, showed very similar results for both loading capacity and selectivity. Better performance was obtained at 7 BV/h at a pH of 4. Evaluation of Bis-PA resin showed that XUS 43578 has better performance than TP 220, with a 30 per cent higher loading capacity and superior selectivity for nickel over impurities.

The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

Otago Schist in the Mount Patriarch, High Burn and Cameron Creek areas of northwest Otago grades from textural grade IIA in the east to textural grade III in the west. The entire region is of the actinolite-pumpellyite metamorphic facies. Lithologies in the area are interbedded turbidite sequences comprising pelite and psammite together with pebble conglomerate, greenschist and metachert horizons. The mineral assemblage of the schist is typically quartz-albite-epidote-actinolite-pumpellyite-chlorite-stilpnomelane-calcite. A good foliation is well defined in the area and is predominantly parallel to bedding, except in hinges of mesoscopic isoclinal folds. The structure of the area appears to be defined by a large southwest plunging isoclinal fold defined by bedding with a steeply dipping axial planar foliation. Kink folding and dextral strike-slip faulting in the area postdates the ductile phase of deformation. Pods of rhodonite, rhodochrosite, spessartine garnet, coombsite, caryopilite, Mnstilpnomelane and Ni-Cu-Zn sulphides were found in concordant metachert layers in the Mount Patriarch area. Metachert was also found in float in the Cameron Creek area. Malachite occurrences relating to copper mineralisation were also noted in a green metachert horizon on the eastern flank of Mount Patriarch. The coombsite, in only the third observation worldwide, is the most Fe-rich variety reported.

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. Strategy development by the minerals industry identified the fragmented management of mineral resources as a significant impediment to the discovery and development of New Zealand Æs mineral resources. The total gross value of New Zealand Æs potential resources of coal and minerals is estimated at about $400 billion, but their potential value is not being realised. The management of minerals is now largely under the control of 86 local authorities (regional and district councils) and the lack of recognition of the significance of the sector has lead to inconsistencies in the way minerals are managed. The industry strategy influenced science funding for minerals, with the result that the 'mineral wealth' component now includes research on making better use of resource data in minerals management. Initially this research has targeted Otago and Northland regions where a number of initiatives are now in progress.   In Otago the Regional Council has budgeted to contribute $1 million towards a regional geophysical survey to advance mineral exploration and the management of subsurface resources in the region, to work cooperatively towards improving public awareness of the significance of minerals to regional economic activity, and to better coordinate policy-making for minerals at regional and district levels.   Crown Minerals, and the Far North and Whangarei district councils are considering providing funding support for an economic study of the mineral potential of Northland, building on a mineral resource assessment undertaken by GNS Science. Enterprise Northland is adding minerals to their list of potential growth sectors, and is supporting the operation of a Northland region minerals focus group.   Regional development agencies and local authorities have shown that they are willing to include mineral resources in their development strategies and to provide for them in policies and plans when supplied with information and assisted with technical support.

Rehabilitation approaches, methods and outcomes have changed markedly over the last 100 years, and especially over the last 20 years. Alluvial gold dredges have moved from creating a legacy of boulder fields and ponds to radiata pine plantations and highly productive dairy pastures. The rehabilitated farmland has reduced flood risk, improved drainage and efficient paddock design. The next challenge is to include areas of environmental diversity in these projects, for example, shelter belts, patches of native trees, and wetlands that were part of the original landscape.   West Coast coal mines have also come from a legacy of leaving it to nature to rehabilitate damage by mining to establishing native ecosystems or plantation forests. Developments in techniques at Stockton Mine are used to illustrate the changes in approach to rehabilitation of native forest and tussock heathland ecosystems. The proposed Cypress Mine will adopt a full range of avoidance, remediation through rehabilitation, and off-site mitigation techniques in a æthree-prongedÆ approach.   We propose a coordinated extractive industry approach to mitigate for the impacts of mining on native ecosystems and achieve nationally important conservation benefits that individual projects cannot afford. This approach is particularly beneficial in New Zealand, as our native ecosystems must be actively managed to conserve native plants and animals. Currently, some important species and ecosystems are not being actively managed for conservation.

Geological information is essential for a diversity of public and other purposes, including land use planning, hazard mitigation, and the exploration and sustainable use of natural resources. This is especially important in New Zealand, where the complexity of the geology is due to its position on an active plate boundary - the ultimate cause of earthquakes, mountain building, subsidence and volcanic activity. The geological setting also controls the origin and distribution of New Zealand's varied mineral and energy resources. Providing information about the origin, quality and quantity of mineral resources has long been seen as a key function of national geological organisations such as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. Such information is essential for wise land-use decisions under the Resource Management Act. One of the major goals of the Institute is to quickly and effectively disseminate research results to interested users. The most effective and internationally accepted method of presenting geological data is by means of geological maps, which show the distribution of rock types and structural features at the surface. Most countries have ongoing gelogical mapping programmes, and in recent years the need for up-to-date, reliable information has led to a trend to accelerate basic geological mapping (eg US National Geological Mapping Act 1992; Australian National Mapping Accord 1990; Plan 2000 in the UK). Over the last 25 years, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences and its predecessors (NZ Geological Survey and DSIR Geology and Geophysics) have concentrated on detailed mapping of priority areas selected on the basis of economic and scientific interest. This has included remapping of Nelson-West Coast and Coromandel, regions with high mineral potential, for which 1:63 360 or 1:50 000 maps have been prepared.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

The dominant heat loads in a deep underground mine are the surrounding rock mass, autocompression and machinery. In addition heat can be contributed to by other sources. Many block cave, sublevel cave operations and coalmines utilise conveyors to transport broken rock out of mine, in some cases completely, in others in combination with other forms of transport. This broken rock can be loaded onto the conveyor at virgin rock temperature and can represent a major heat input to the ventilation airflow as it is transported out of the mine. The purpose of this paper is to review established knowledge regarding heat flow, from conveyed rock to determine the main factors influencing the heat flow and to develop a methodology for predicting heat flow from caved rock. Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

The analysis of equipment trends in The AusIMMÆs revision of Monograph 19 - Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) (in prep) in the paper by Graham Lumley raised some interesting, and in parts disturbing, trends in the Australian open cut mining industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the productivity of the whole mining industry is down by 34 per cent since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment, median output for draglines is down by 15 per cent since 2003, electric rope shovels are down by 41 per cent since 2003, hydraulic excavators are down by 39 per cent since 2008, front-end loaders are down by 39 per cent since 2007 and trucks are down by 41 per cent since 2006. Clearly e boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top ten per cent by annual output per unit of input) has declined, but not by as much as the median (eg shovels down by eight per cent, excavators down by 19 per cent and FELs down by five per cent). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins, pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one, will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.CITATION:Lumley, G, Trott, T and Lewis, M, 2012. Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017.
