I have read with particular interest that portion of the discussion by Anton Eilers referring to the high-lime (and also high-alumina) slags made by August Raht in 1881, while smelting the Horn Silver ores at Franklin, Utah. The two analyses of such slags, furnished by Mr. Raht to Mr. Eilers are: (a) Not determined in this analysis. (b) Not given in Mr. Eilers' paper. Oxygen ratio, A1 as base. Peru produced approximately 17,466,620 bbl., of oil during 1937, or slightly less than the record high of 17,593,700 bbl. established during 1936. As in 1936, the entire output of the country was derived from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin and Zorritos fields in the northwestern part of the country. Outside of the proven areas, drilling was 'continued by the Peruvian Government in the northern province of Tumbes on the reserved zone at Zorritos. Drilling was carried out on three locations, two of which are understood to have been abandoned during the year. In southern Peru, further attention was given by Government engineers to the Pusi and Saman districts and plans are being worked out for the commencement of drilling operations in the near future in the vicinity of Pirin. Activities in the montaiia region in eastern Peru were continued by the Compafiia Petrolera El Ganso Azul. This company acquired the interest of the Selden Breck Co., and holds some 90,000 acres along the Pachitea River a few miles above its confluence with the Ucayali. During the year, the preparation of a landing place, the cutting of a 12-km. (71/2-mile) road from the river to the drill site, and the construction of a camp were undertaken. Equipment for drilling on this company's concessions has already arrived in South America. La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production of crude oil on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company Limited amounted to 14,722,754 bbl. during 1937, a decrease of 403,736 bbl. from the all-time high reached during 1936. The total production from 1890 to Dec. 31,1937, was 178,390,767 bbl. During 1937, a total of 141,653 ft. was drilled, 129,516 ft. in new wells and 12,137 in deepening existing wells. In all, 57 wells were completed, 47 of which produced oil, 2 were gas wells and 8 dry. holes. Twenty-nine wells were cleaned out or deepened during the year. The average depth of new wells completed during 1937 was 2367 ft. compared with 1984 ft. for the new wells completed during 1936. There was an increased use of rotary tools during the year and this method is now used to a greater extent than the cable-tool method, which formerly predominated. Many flotation plants practicing pyrite depression, mills leaching gold and silver ores, blast furnace facilities, and many metal plating shops share at least one common waste-water constituent of particular environmental concern-cyanide. In free or complexed form, cyanide ion is an emotionally and technically problematical reagent whose removal from water deserves attention. The initial consideration of the fundamental nature of soluble cyanides is followed by a discussion of decomposition or removal options for simple cyanide species. Complexed cyanide reactivity is discussed as it relates to ongoing or proposed methods for the decomposition or removal of soluble cyanides. New approaches to cyanide removal are discussed.

In the South Island of New Zealand an unusually favorable opportunity is offered for the analysis of the older crystalline rocks, underlying the sedimentary rocks which form the "country" of the gold-deposits. The Manipori formation of this island, comprising the greater part of the mountainous district west of lakes Manipori and Te Anau, in Otago, consists of an enormous thickness (estimated by Professor Hutton1 at 160,000 ft.) of crystalline schists, gneiss, syenite, and syenitic gneiss, with associated masses of granite; the whole forming the most picturesque fart of New Zealand. The famous West Coast sounds occur in this formation. No paying auriferous lodes have been discovered in it; and for this reason an examination of the rocks is specially interesting here. Stelzner, Posepny, and others, who have criticised the conclusions of Sandberger, have laid great stress on the fact that all the silicates analyzed by him were taken from the vicinity of orebodies containing those heavy metals which he notes as occurring in the silicates of the country-rock; their contention being that these metals, supposed to occur as silicates in gneiss and other crystalline rocks, were really contained as sulphides, and were therefore impregnations from the neighboring orebodies. The same objection, whatever be its weight, might be urged with equal justice against Mr. Becker's derivation of the mercury and gold of the lodes of the Pacific Coast from' the granite underlying their country-rock. This paper describes a numerical mathematical model of the steamflood process that depends on fewer restrictive assumptions than models previously reported. The solution, however, is obtained economically. Example calculations are presented that, on comparison with experimental results, tend to validate the model. Results that expose certain process mechanics are discussed. The model describes the simultaneous flow of three phases — oil, water and gas — in one dimension. It includes the effects of three-phase relative permeabilities, capillary pressure, and temperature- and pressure - dependent fluid properties. Interphase mass transfer of water-steam is allowed, but the oil is assumed nonvolatile and the hydrocarbon gas insoluble in the liquid phases. The model allows heat convection in one dimension and two-dimensional heat conduction in a vertical cross-section spanning the oil sand and adjacent strata. The hydrocarbon-steam gas composition is tracked, but the effect of gas composition on water-steam phase behavior is neglected. The model is solved numerically in three separate stages. The three-phase mass balances are solved simultaneously using Newtonian iteration on nonlinearities occurring in the accumulation terms. The energy balance is solved separately by noniterative application of the alternating-direction implicit procedure. Separate solution of the composition balance is accomplished by straightforward solution of the finite difference equations. The method of effecting nonsimultaneous, stable solution of the mass and energy balances is the key to the success of the model. INTRODUCTION Mathematical tools as well as laboratory and field experiments are necessary to help us understand the complex steamflood process. A mathematical model can expose process mechanics and show the relative importance of process variables, but this ability is often limited by restrictive assumptions. Most known models of steam processes,l-5 with the exception of the model of Gottfried,6 are "simplified" in that they involve analytic approximations and require many restrictive assumptions. The primary utility of these methods lies in the routine use as an aid in engineering design. By contrast, the comprehensive model presented here is numerical and requires far fewer restrictive assumptions. It finds its primary utility as a research tool. It serves as an aid in understanding the nature of the process, in interpreting laboratory experiments and in evaluating and developing simpler mathematical models for engineering design. The major reason why previously presented models have been confined to the "simplified" class is evidenced by the one published exception. In 1965, Gottfried6 presented a numerical model for the combustion process of which the steam process is a subset. The result is a comprehensive tool (though it neglects capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction) that is troubled with convergence problems and that requires 2 to 3 hours of IBM 7094 time to complete a calculation. Though our present model does not simulate combustion, it does consider capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction and it overcomes the convergence and computer-time problems. MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF STEAMFLOODING FLUID FLOW The equations employed to describe three-phase fluid flow are of a familiar form. Single crystal Mo-Re alloys (99.99+ purity), grown by electron bombardment floating zone heating, were deformed in tension at temperatures from -196° to +200°C. At -196oC, Mo-6 pet Re and Mo-20 pct Re alloys deform by slip on systems of the type (101) [1ll]. Above-78oC, the operative slip system is of the type (112) [111], (101) [1ll], or (211) [1ll], depending upon orientation. Mo-39 pct Re alloys deform by twinning and slip at all test temperatures with a (112) [111] type twinning system. Critical resolved shear stress for slip and twinning is calculated as a function of composition and temperature, and the mechanical properties compared with those of less Pure polycrystalline alloys. HEXAGONAL close-packed rhenium, c/a = 1.615, is highly soluble in molybdenum. The bee molybdenum-rich solid solution extends to approximately 42 at. pet Re* at 2500°C,' Fig. 1. Recent work on polycrystalline alloys has shown conclusively that the addition of rhenium to molybdenum improves both the fabricability and the low-temperature ductility.2"5 Similar behavior is observed for W-Re and Cr-Re alloys.5 Initially, Geach and Hughes2 found that the Mo-30 pct Re alloy could be cold rolled to approximately 90 pct reduction before the onset of cracking. The remarkable effect of the rhenium was later confirmed by Jaffee et al. 3-5 with an optimum condition of maximum strength combined with maximum ductility at the Mo-35 pet composition. At higher rhenium contents, the ductility was severely impaired due apparently to the presence of brittle tetragonal s phase, Fig. 1. In the Mo-35 pet Re alloy, at least 110 ppm (parts per million) oxygen could be tolerated before cold workability was reduced. By comparison, the corresponding tolerance figure in unalloyed molybdenum is ~ 10 ppm. The effect of rhenium was considered in terms of: 1) a reduction in oxygen solubility in the lattice; 2) a redistribution of intergranular oxide from grain boundary films to isolated spheres; and 3) the promotion of twinning as a further mode of plastic deformation. Paradoxically, twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron and the silicon irons.6'7 Work to date has been restricted to are-melted and powder metallurgy polycrystalline material of ~ 99.9 pet purity. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of determining the mode and crystallography of plastic deformation of a series of bee Mo-Re alloy single crystals over a wide temperature range from -196o to +200°C. Using high-purity zone-melted material (~ 99.99 + pet purity), the specific role of rhenium in the molybdenum lattice may be understood more fully since effects due to grain boundaries and oxide redistribution will be absent. At the same time, the study provides a comparison of single and polycrystalline deformation behavior. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A) Preparation and Purity of Single Crystals. When two grains in a polycrystalline specimen meet at a point in the course of grain-boundary movements, and the new boundary created at the point is one of relatively low specific free energy, a nonequilibrium boundary condition occurs. The nonequilibrium is enhanced if the other grain boundaries involved at the point of meeting are relatively high in specific free energy. The nonequilibrium results in a correction by growth of the complex grain (two subgrains) to a large size, sufficient in many cases for it to become a self-propagating unit, i.e., a recrystallization grain. This mechanism, herein called "geometrical coalescence," is proposed as a logical origin for recrystallization nuclei, particularly for secondary recrystallization. RECENT publications1-' indicate that considerable progress has been made toward a complete understanding of the three microstructural processes in metals: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. However, a major problem persists, namely, the origin of recrystallization nuclei. It is generally accepted that once a recrystallization nucleus, a secondary recrystallization nucleus particularly, has reached a certain size, it will continue to grow at the expense of its neighbors, simply as a consequence of grain-boundary free-energy considerations. What has remained obscure, however, is the mechanism whereby such a nucleus comes into being and grows to the self-propagating size. Recrystallization Nucleation in a Two-Dimensional Grain-Boundary System In the left portion of Fig. 1 is shown schematically the meeting of grains 1 and 4 on disappearance of boundary 2-3, i.e., the boundary that existed between grains 2 and 3, as might happen in the course of normal grain-boundary migration. If, by chance —and the probability is not necessarily small— grains 1 and 4 are close together in their mutual orientations, or in some other special way mutually oriented so that the new common boundary has relatively a very low specific free energy (hereinafter referred to by s), then the grain boundary arrangement as depicted in the figure is highly unstable. This is particularly so if boundaries 1-3, 3-4, 4-2, and 2-1 are high in their s values. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that boundary 1-4 has a s equal to zero, and the s's of all the other boundaries present are equal to each other and constant, then the boundary arrangement on the right in Fig. 1 will be

The dry cleaning of coal is a relatively new art and, as might have been expected, a number of unforeseen problems have been brought to light in the few years that dry methods of treatment have been in commercial use. The pneumatic concentrators that were first adapted to the cleaning of coal had already been developed to a fair degree of efficiency, although at low ratings, in the field of ore dressing. The concentrating machines, therefore, were in a relatively more perfected state than the general technology of dry cleaning and, for this reason, the major difficulties encountered in the early plants were in the accessory operations involved in the servicing of the cleaners rather than in the functioning of the cleaners themselves. The crudities of a new technology were further aggravated, in some cases, by meagerness of appropriations which precluded even the provision of adequate storage bins and such other facilities as had been long recognized as indispensable to the proper functioning of older types of cleaning plants. The practice of dry cleaning is now sufficiently established so that we may examine critically auxiliary equipment and operations. The cleaning processes have been so simplified, with respect to presizing of the raw coal required and the quantity of air circulated, that stinting of expenditures for auxiliary equipment is not necessary to keep the per ton cost of installation in line with complete and well designed plants of other types. Furthermore, sufficient operating experience has been accumulated to ascertain the conditions most conducive to effective operation of dry-cleaning machines; at least the essentials of a definite technology of dry cleaning has been established. Early Operating Problems The problems that have occupied the builders and operators of dry-cleaning plants from the beginning have been relatively few, but difficult of solution. The principal difficulties have been: 1. The proper sizing of the raw coal to suit the cleaning process. 2. The handling of raw coal when it is delivered wet from the mine. 3. Dust collecting. 4. The maintenance of uniformity in cleaning performance.

IN the silicothermic reduction of magnesia, burned dolomite is treated with high grade ferrosilicon in an evacuated steel retort at temperatures between 1150° and 1200°C. The following reaction is assumed to occur MgO + CaO + 1/2 Si (Fe) - Mg(g) +- & Ca,SiO, + Fe with the equilibrium constant on the basis of thermodynamic data for the substances involved and assuming unit activity for all solid constituents, Kubaschewski and Evans' calculated the magnesium pressure as a function of temperature logp,, (mmHg) = 15.06-1.61 T- log T- 13,16O/T. Pidgeon and King," who measured the magnesium pressure by means of a flow method, found values about three times the calculated ones. This may be caused by uncertainties in the thermodynamic data, but may also be caused by the formation of other reaction products, such as Ca,SiO,, which is known to be the stable silicate in equilibrium with lime. Whatever the exact reaction may be, it is evident that as long as all other factors are maintained constant the magnesium pressure will vary with the silicon activity, viz: p,, = &,. (p,,) ", where (p,,)" is the magnesium pressure by the reduction with silicon of unit activity. In the present investigation, p,,, was therefore measured for various grades of ferrosilicon and their silicon activities were calculated. The experimental method was similar to that used by Pidgeon and King. Briquettes of burned dolomite and Fe-Si alloys were placed in a 1 in. heat resistant steel tube and were heated to 1200°C. By means of a flow of purified hydrogen, the magnesium vapor was swept into a condenser filled with steel wool. From the amounts of hydrogen used and magnesium condensed the magnesium partial pressure was calculated. First a tube of 28 pct Cr steel, and later a tube of Kanthal D (a ferrous alloy with 22.6 pct Cr, 2 pct Co, and 4.5 pct Al), was used as a heat resistant tube. The latter tube showed the best heat resistance. The dolomite used had the following composition: 43.6 pct MgO, 55.5 pct CaO, 0.2 pct K,O + NalO, 0.2 pct Fe,O,, and 0.3 pct insoluble. The ferrosilicons were prepared from 98 pct Si of technical grade (0.7 pct Al, 0.3 pct Ca, and 1 pct Fe) by melting with various amounts of electrolytic iron of high purity. The alloys thus obtained were analyzed on their iron and silicon contents, which added up to between 99 and 100 pct. The amounts of reactants were chosen so that there would always be an excess of the oxides, and the average decrease in silicon content during the experiments would be about 1 pct. Most of the reaction occurred in the part of the reaction mixture facing the gas flow. The change in the silicon concentration in the part facing the condenser was, therefore, negligible. THE direct process for the manufacture of iron which is principally used in the United States, in New York and New Jersey, is called the Jersey forge, the Champlain forge, the Catalan forge, the Bloomary forge or fire, and sometimes a Forge fire. Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, who has discussed the process as applied to the beach sands of Canada as well as to ores, in the Report of the Canadian Geological Survey for 1867-69, has shown that the name of Catalan forge is incorrect, as this process in no way resembles the Catalan, but is really the old German bloomary modified by long use in this country. Dr. Hunt gives the probable history of the introduction of the process into the United States, and a series of historic citations of great interest relating to it. Not¬withstanding the improvements which have been made in the construction of the furnace and its greater output, the process to-day, in all its essential features, is carried out as Karsten described it. It should now be known as the American Bloomary. The name of Jersey or Champlain forge or fire is not sufficiently distinctive. The name of Bloomary, by which the process is usually distinguished, is objectionable, not because it is incorrect but because it is indefinite, as the Knobbling fires, which are a very slight modification of the Walloon process, for making blooms either from pig iron or by sinking scrap, are also called Bloomaries, and although Knobbling fires are only used in a few localities where charcoal pig is made, and special grades of charcoal-refined blooms are required, one does not, without an explanation, know whether the blooms are being manufactured from ore or pig. The name Forge fire is equally indefinite, as it might just as well apply to any of the five direct methods of making blooms which have been in use in Europe, but which have now mostly gone out of date. The Dame of American Bloomary, however, is the one which most completely describes it, and is the one least open to objection. The names of German, Jersey, and Champlain bloomary are too local, and these adjectives are thought unnecessary by those who use the process, and we shall not therefore describe it under any of these names, but as the American Bloomary process. * Read at the Montreal meeting, September, 1879.

Interesting results were recently obtained in geophysical prospecting at the Questa mine of the Molybdenum Corpn. of America in New Mexico. This paper describes that survey, which was carried out during October and November, 1927, by the Swedish American Prospecting Corpn. It is hoped that the paper will make it possible for the mining man to form an opinion of the applicability of geophysical prospecting under difficult conditions, showing, as it does, the results when prospecting for small small orebodies with comparatively poor conductivity, in a region of rough topography. Some principles underlying electromagnetic prospecting not known to be published previously will also be given in an elementary way, with special attention to the general structure of the electromagnetic field. Geological. Conditions at Questa The property is situated in the Taos range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. About this region, L. C. Graton says:' The main range is made up of Pre-Cambrian granites, gneisses and schists but in the vicinity of Red River igneous rocks of later age are present almost to the exclusion of the older series. These younger rocks are divisible into two groups. The older of the two, probably Pre-Tertiary age, is represented by large intrusive masses of monzonite porphyry, usually containing considerable quartz. The more recent group comprises intrusive and probably effusive dark-colored andesites and coarse andesitic breccias, some of which contain fragments of the monzonite; there are also flows of rhyolite and beds of rhyolite breccia. The evidence regarding the relative age of the andesite and the rhyolite is not wholly satisfactory, but there is little doubt that the andesite is the older. The ore deposits, although occurring more commonly in the monzonite porphyry than in the rhyolite, nevertheless are believed to be genetically related to the rhyolite. They certainly cut the rhyolite or andesite in places, and hence fall in the late Tertiary. The molybdenite at the Questa mine occurs in veins in the alaskite granite porphyry belonging to the older part of the Pre-Tertiary eruptives. IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. Use of the Tables Fig. 1 shows the meridians and parallel which have been designated as zero longitude and latitude. The tables themselves are self-explanatory. The

Bethlehem Steel's Cambria Division coal cleaning and preparation plant, operated by Bethlehem Mines Corp., is located in Cambria County, Pa., about 2 ½ miles southeast of Ebensburg. Here, above ground, is the most modern coal preparation plant in the world. Below the surface is a new coal mine also referred to as "the most modern that could be built today." The preparation plant has a capacity of 1370 tons of clean coal per hr. It serves three Bethlehem mines, Heisley No. 31, Revloc No. 32, and the new Cambria Slope No. 33.

Present methods of roof support require that first a hole must be drilled, and then a toggle belt or grouted resin bolt be set. Automating this system is very difficult. Therefore, we decided to develop a system which would insert pins into the roof in one step. We think that this type of system can be automated much easier. It would then speed up the roof bolting operation and eliminate the need for a man to work under unsupported roof, making roof bolting a much safer job. There are two ways that a pin can be inserted in a mine roof without drilling a hole. It can either be pushed in, using a very high, constant axial force; or it can be hammered in like a nail. The former method involves very high compressive stresses in the pin, and requires complicated machinery to prevent buckling. Since hammering the pin does not require high axial forces buckling is not as likely. Also, experiments have shown that there are no problems associated with getting the pin to go in straight. We chose to develop the second method. While investigating methods for hammering a pin into a mine roof, we learned that piles were being driven 10 times faster than by conventional methods with a method called "orboresonance." We decided to turn the pile driver upside down, and drive pins up into the mine roof. Sonic Pin Setting Machine The machine consists of a steel bar supported at the nodal points of its first mode of transverse vibration (Fig. 1). A mechanical oscillator, driven by a hydraulic motor, is attached to one end of the bar. This provides the forcing function for the vibrations in the bar. The hydraulic power is supplied by a portable unit. When the forcing function is near the natural frequency of the bar, large amplitudes of vibration occur and require little power input. An anvil is attached to the bar at a point of maximum deflection, providing a means for striking the pin. Since the bar is being driven near its natural frequency, it takes little energy to accelerate the bar back and forth between each hit. This means that most of the power being put into the bar is going into driving the pin. This is unlike conventional pile drivers which use most of their power to accelerate the hammer back and forth between hits. The resonant frequency of the bar we used is about 250 Hz, which is in the audible range, hence the term "sonic pin setting machine." The system benefits are: (1) elimination of the two-step drilling and pin-setting roof bolt operation, (2) increased speed, (3) more intimate contact between the formation and bolts, (4) less expensive roof bolts, (5) higher integrity, (6) potential for automatic operation. Modifications During the months from Oct. to Dec. 12, 1974, under U.S. Bureau of Mines grant No. 00144104, "Projects on Coal Extraction," six members of the senior class at Carnegie Mellon University designed and built the experimental machine. They drove three pins into the Safety Research coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., and determined that the project was worth continuing. In January 1975 we began making modifications and repairs in preparation for a more extensive program of testing at Bruceton. The major items were: 1) Design and build a collapsible pin guide to keep the pin parallel with the line of travel of the lift table. 2) Move the anvil to the center of the bar. 3) Refinish the nodal holes and install new node pins and bushings. 4) Realign the bar in its frame. 5) Install a relief valve on the lift unit to control the upward force. The upward force that we exert on the pin is relatively small, so there is no tendency for it to buckle. This means that all we need to do is hold the pin straight during its initial penetration. Proper control of the moisture content of natural gas is essential to reliable operation of gas transmission and distribution facilities serving northern markets. The moisture content of natural gas is usually determined by dew point measurement at the existing pressure. For any gas of constant moistrire content. the dew Point varies with the pressure. A correlation of the data of several investigators is prezented in graphical form by the authors. These data were correlated by the authors and F. M. Townsend, C. C. Tsao. M. I). Rogers. Jr.. and J. A. Porter. graduate students in chemi(.a1 engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Of articular interest are the hitherto unpublished low temperature data observed by Wickliffe Skinner. Jr., which are included in this correlation. PRESENTATION OF DATA The problem of interpreting water dew points, or saturation temperatures. of natural gas in terms of specific moisture con-tent has increased in importance during the past decade bec.arl.;e of extensive development.; in the transmission and petro-chemical phases of the natural gas industry. Virtually all gas transported to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low water vapor content to prevent hydrate formation in transmission and distribution lines and resultant interruption.; in gas deliveries. Complete dehydration is required in certain phases of tile petro-chemical industry involving low-temperature operations. It is a well-known fact that the water vapor content of pure hydrocarbon vapors and their mixtures at superatmospheric pressures cannot be predicted with accuracy by assuming validity of the ideal gas laws." Earlier interest in the general problem was concentrated on the water vapor content of pure hydrocarhons and hydrocarbon mixtures in the pressure and temperature ranges common to gas and oil producing reservoirs in order to obtain fundamental data for the improvement of production techniques and the furtherance of reservoir studies. Excellent data are published for pressures ranging from atmospheric to 10,000 psig and for temperatures ranging from 100° to 460° F4,9,10,11 and are found to be in close agreement. However, experimental data at high pressures and temperatures below 100°F are comparatively limited in scope. Experimental data in the lower temperature range have been reported by Laulhere and Briscoe.8 Deaton, et al,2,3 Hammerscllmidt,5,6 and wade," In general, the pressures employed in these investigations ranged from atmospheric to 1.000 psig while temperatures ranged from 32° to 120°F; i.e., the usual conditions encountered in gas transmission line operations, Additional data were reported by Russell, et al,12 at pressures as high as 2.000 psig and covering a rather narrow atmospheric temperature range. In 1947, Hammerschmidt published a correlation of all available data,' in which the water vapor content of gases at saturation. under high pressure and low temperature. was predicted by extrapolation. In 1948, Wickliffe Skinner. Jr.. presented data on the moisture content of a low nitrogen content gas at low temperature and at pressures ranging upward to 1.500 psia.1-3 Comparison of Skinner's experimental data with the extrapolated data of Hammerscllmidt revealed an appreciable variation in the lower temperature range. emphasizing the need for a new correlation which would rely on Skinner's data at lower temperatures. Careful scrutiny of available data suggested that presence of an appreciable quantity of nitrogen in a gas mixture may affect its saturated moisture content so that data obtained from gases with more than three per cent nitrogen were not used in this correlation. CORRELATION OF DATA Data employed in this correlation are presented in Table I. The data of Dodson and Standing.4 McKetta and Katz,9 and Olds, Sage and Lacey10 were compared and found to be in close agreement so that the data of Olds. et al, re-plotted in a more convenient form by the Humble Oil and Refining Co.,' were used for temperatures of 100°F and above. Skinner's data were used for temperatures below 40°F. Between these intermediate temperature limits, the data of Hammerschmidt.7 Wade" and extrapolated data of Olds. et al.1 were tabulated

IT IS to be. read in Western newspapers that Hon. S. S. Arentz who introduced H. R. 7736, 'has repudiated it, that certain mining men in Utah and Nevada say that they will fight it "until hell freezes over." It is to be read in more temperate expressions that "the eminent engineers who drafted the bill exhibited a woeful misunderstanding of Western sentiment and opinion." Furthermore, it is averred that there is no need for revising the mining laws, that we have got along pretty well under the existing laws, etc. Such statements are so surprising in view of, the facts of record that it is hard to believe that the oppon-ents of the bill, who make them, are well informed, or that they represent general opinion. It will be useful therefore to review the record of the case. Our GOOD OLD MINING LAWS We have indeed got on well in our mining industry, but that has not been by virtue; of our good old mining laws. Rather has it been in spite of them. Ever since the Richmond-Eureka case in the '70s there has been litigation arising from them. Early in the '80s the apex law was discarded by common consent in Leadville, and it has been ignored in every district of flat-lying ore deposits ever since. The great mines of the present time are the porphyry copper deposits. At Bingham, Ely, Ray, Chino, Miami, Clifton and Ajo the apex law is simply inapplicable. A law that is inapplicable to the modern conditions of mining may be an old law, but it can not properly be characterized as a "good" law. For such reasons, and many others of weight, there has been a demand for revision of the mining laws; dat-ing ,back at least three decades. President Roosevelt appointed a commission to advise respecting the question, said commission comprising. Dr. James Douglas (chairman), John Hays Hammond, D: M. Barringer, Walter B: Devereux, and William B. Mather. This committee was unanimous on the following points:

The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that required more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture. (Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to "qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of. counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were. engaged on both sides ; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton ; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose.
