THE CHALRYAN.--I think that we have set the stage for the balance of the sym- posium. Most of the emphasis has been placed on the immediate value of every- thing we can do and everything we can learn for the furtherance of the war effort. I believe that ought to be first, but I also believe that this is the time for us to con- sider very seriously not only what these improved methods and techniques do to form a closer approach to ideal segregation but what effect these great quantities of scrap metals and alloys that are going to be produced this year and next, are going to have-what their impact will be-on post- war industry in general and in particular ,, on the primary metals fields. In some cases we have been hearing in the last month or two of the law of diminishing returns coming to the fore. We find alloy simplification growing and certain alloys being produced in great quantities, which will perhaps drop out of the picture some- what as the war ends but never to the lower ( stage they had before. We have I think a pretty good cross- section of the producers, the refiners, the reclaimers and ingot makers, the ultimate users here, and there ought to be some good and helpful discussion. Self-diffusion in iron has been measured during rapid a-r transformations using a variant of the Kryukou and Zhukhovitskii diffusion method. The study was performed by thermally cycling iron foils (1 to 6 cpm) through the transformation (=910°C). Some foils have been subjected to over 1000 cycles and some have spent more than 15 pct of their total diffusion time in the process of transformation. The experimental results show that the a-r transformation has no measurable effect on self-diffusion in iron. The study is completed by a quantitative analysis of mechanisms which can affect the diffusion rate during the transformation. The analysis confirms the experimental results. SINCE diffusion is an important factor in many solid-state transformations, it is of interest to study how it is affected by the stresses generated during these transformations. Clinard and Sherby1'2 were the first to make a study along these lines. They measured diffusion coefficients in Fe-FeCoV couples subjected to slow thermal cycling (1.5 cph) through the a-r transformation range. They found an enhancement of diffusion by a factor of about two. The purpose of the present paper is to report measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient of iron during much more rapid thermal cyclings (1 to 6 cpm) through the a-r transformation (-910°C). These more rapid cyclings produce higher strain rates during the transformation and should emphasize any possible influence of transformation upon diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL Iron foils, 25 to 35 µ thick, were cold-rolled from 99.92 pct pure iron and annealed in pure helium for 2 hr at 870°C; the resulting grain diameter was about 150 µ. Specimens 0.5 by 8 cm were cut from the foils and I7e55 was vapor deposited on one of their surfaces. A 38 gage alumel-chrome1 thermocouple was spot welded in the middle of one of the specimen long edges, Fig. 1. Two 38 gage chrome1 wires were also spot welded along the same edge on each side of the thermocouple; they were placed 2.5 cm apart and used for electrical resistance measurements. In order to prevent twisting and crumpling, the specimens were pinched between two quartz plates 0.1 by 1 by 7 cm and the assembly was close fitted into a 1 cm ID quartz tube. Four holes were drilled through the tube to let the 38 gage wires out: these were connected to the recording equipment by means of extension wires. 20-gage nickel wires fixed at both ends of the specimens were used to thermally cycle the foils by Joule heating. The above described device was placed in a 2.7 cm ID quartz tube which in turn was placed in a tubular furnace. Either a pure helium atmosphere or circulating hydrogen was used during the experiments. Specimens were subjected to thermal cycles between a minimum temperature To and a maximum temperature Tm at rates ranging from 1 to 6 cpm. This was obtained by maintaining the furnace at a constant temperature near the minimum temperature To and periodically passing an electric current through the specimen. Cooling was achieved by heat losses to the surroundings. The forms and periods of cycles were varied from one specimen to another; however, each specimen was subjected to one type of cycle only. The temperature and electrical resistance variations of the specimens were recorded as a function of time. The temperature curves were used for diffusion calculations while the electrical resistance curves were used to monitor the transformation and to determine its starting point and its approximate duration. Diffusion was measured by the method developed by Kryukov and zhukhovitskii3 and modified by Angers and Claisse.4,5 In this method a metallic foil is coated on one side with a radioactive isotope and the activity is measured periodically on both sides during the diffusion anneal. Although there was a very great increase in drilling activity along the fault line of south Texas during 1937 as compared with the previous three or four years, and although seven new fields were discovered, it cannot be said that any major development of importance took place. There were slightly over 550 completions during 1937, of which nearly 350 were oil wells as compared with some 275 the preceding year, of which 169 were oil wells. This increase in drilling activity was occasioned almost entirely by the greater interest in and development of Austin chalk production, principally in Caldwell, Guadalupe and Bastrop Counties. Seven fields were found, of which a brief description is given in Table 3. None has as yet assumed anything of major importance, and it is doubtful whether any will be classified as major discoveries through further development. Two were producing from the Edwards limestone, one from serpentine and the other four from the Austin chalk; the latter may be classified as extremely erratic in nature. The major discouraging feature of the year was the rise and subsequent fall of interest and importance of Austin chalk production. Many new operators came into this district to drill and produce Austin chalk oil toward the first of the year, but in the latter months the production decline from this formation was so rapid and the production so erratic that drilling operations fell off materially and interest largely abated. This was particularly true of the Branyon field in Caldwell County, and the same statement is applicable to the Pearsall field, Frio County. The latter field, covering some 5000 acres and owned and controlled entirely by the Amerada and Rycade, had early completions from the Austin chalk as high as 22,000 bbl. per day. The decline was extremely rapid and the maintained production from 17 wells is only around 700 bbl. per day after a total recovery of less than one-half million barrels. Present estimates of recoverable oil from Chalk vary from 2000 to 5000 bbl. per acre. A new process for the completion of producing wells from the Edwards limestone, particularly applicable to old producing areas, was developed, in that the penetration of the Edwards lime in drilled wells is now only 1 or 2 ft. as compared to between 15 and 75 ft. in wells drilled several years ago. AMONG the large number of deep mines in the world there are several which do not differ much in depth. The St. John del Rey mine, in Brazil, has reached a vertical depth of 6726 ft. below the top of its shaft; miners enter it, however, through an adit which intersects the shaft 324 ft. below its top, wherefore it might be said that the mine is really only 6400 ft. deep. In the Kolar gold field of India there are a number of deep shafts, one of which reaches to a vertical depth of 6140 ft. below surface. In South Africa also there are a number of deep shafts, the Village Deep being 6100 ft. early in 1921. The City Deep, Ltd., proposes to sink to a depth of 7000 ft. but pre-sumably by the time it does so the St. John del Rey will be deeper than that, since it has been increasing in depth at an average rate of about 150 ft. per year. The deepest shaft in the United States, the Tamarack No. 5, although it is only 5308 ft. deep, actually approaches nearer to the center of the earth (4100 ft. below sea level, as against 3958 ft. , at St. John del Rey). The deepest workings in the Calumet & Hecla go down to 4600 ft. below sea level. The St. John del Rey is not only the deepest, mine in the world, but it also is worked by the oldest registered English mining company, which was organ-ized in 1830 to work a mine at a considerable dis-tance from this one. That mine proved unprofitable, and in 1837 operations were transferred to the. deposit now under discussion, where operations have been prac-tically continuous ever since.

A process for recovery of lead and silver from high-grade lead sulfide concentrates by dry chlorination and fused salt electrolysis was developed by Hazen Research, Inc., for Cyprus Metallurgical Processes Corporation (Cymet). A pilot plant was designed to handle mixed sulfide concentrates and to produce high purity lead in a 2,000- ampere capacity fused salt cell. Design of the dry chlorinator and fused salt cell is discussed. Integration of modern chlorine caustic cells for reagent generation was evaluated in the pilot plant program. Also included in the paper will be process chemistry; pilot plant flowsheet, equipment and data: by-product and impurity removal: and scaleup and economic considerations for the process.

PHYSICAL metallurgists interested in the alloying behavior and phase transformations in rare-earth metals and alloys require a strain-free polished and etched surface for both metallographic and X-ray examination. However, the rare earths have presented a problem in this respect since they are difficult to polish free from strain and are very reactive to the atmosphere. Their tendency to oxidize readily even at room temperature necessitates careful preparation and rather elaborate protection if their surface is to be examined for any length of time. The "light" lan-thanides (i .e., atomic numbers less than 63), especially lanthanum and cerium, are particularly bad in this regard; they oxidize very rapidly at room temperature. To eliminate the problem of plastic deformation remaining on the surface after mechanical polishing, electropolishingl and chemical polishing techniques2 have been developed. The electropolishing technique requires the specimen to be immersed in an electrolyte at -77°C and thus obviates a metallographic study of, for example, the fcc —double-hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) transformation in cerium which begins at -10°C. The chemical polishing solution has been used only on several of the "heavy" rare-earth metals. However, a convenient method for protecting the polished and etched surfaces from atmospheric corrosion has not been available. Our interest in the superconducting properties of lanthanum, and in the phase transformations in lanthanum and cerium, has led us to develop a technique for the metallographic preparation of lanthanum and cerium which clearly reveals the microstructure and preserves the etched surface for days. The specimens are chemically polished and anodized. The chemical polishing is performed at room temperature, the anodic oxide film provides the required protection from the atmosphere, and colors produced in the film provide a simple positive technique for phase identification. Lanthanum and cerium metal ingots obtained from Johnson Matthey and Co., Ltd., were remelted to suitable shapes and heat-treated to produce various microstructures. An historical review and a survey of current practice in the application of fine dry grinding in the iron ore industry are given. Both closed and open-circuit applications are reviewed, and the advantages, disadvantages, and process considerations for these two systems are discussed. The ground ore temperature rise, and the cool-ing of ground ore and mill ventilation are also discussed, along with the agglomerating characteristics of dry ground ore. Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast-furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date. Others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. In almost all cases some grinding is required prior to pelletizing. Most of these ores occur in the weathered state which may result in difficulty in the thickening and/or filtering stages when ground in a wet system. The resulting filter cake would probably require partial drying to provide a product suitable for the subsequent balling operation; however the partial drying and subsequent material-handling steps often produce random agglomeration. Normally, these agglomerates will cause problems in the green ball formation process. Thus dry grinding has developed as a solution to this problem. Most of the dry iron ore grinding installations utilizing the standard-type rod or ball mill are grinding high-grade natural ores that do not require beneficiation. Although power consumed per ton of final product is 120% or greater in dry grinding as compared with wet grinding, the additional power required for dewatering and handling a wet ground product can easily exceed the initial power savings. Dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades but its major application to the iron ore industry has taken place only within the past ten years. The successful application of dry grinding to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore for pelletizing and to discuss the various designs and operating parameters involved.

The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

INTRODUCTION A small, independent mining enterprise (SIME) is an independently owned and operated business concern engaged primarily in mineral development, from the exploration to the production stage. A SIME may or may not be listed on stock exchanges. By definition, a SIME is not dominant in its field and has no long-term financial backing. As such, it is not a major producer of minerals, nor is it a petroleum company, a government organization or a subsidiary of such organizations. The survival and growth of a SIME is most often controlled by an independently minded entrepreneur, who not only conceives and carries out new projects, but is materially affected by the success or failure of these projects. Usually, a SIME does not have a large or constant cash flow. Such a lack of long-term financial backing forces the SIME to meet the challenge of finding capital for its activities on a step-by-step basis. Its survival strategy is thus based on finding funds at the right time, of the right type and in the right quantities. The purpose of this paper is to show that the type of venture in which a SIME is involved affects the difficulty of raising new capital and the choice of possible sources of funds. The Small, Independent Mining Enterprise The SIME, also called small miner, junior mining company, speculative mining company, and pennystock mining company, is not a figment of the imagination of financial speculators. In Canada, there are more than 1,800 small mineral enterprises which spend on the average less than $1,000,000 per year on activity which is directed at bringing forth new mineral supply. In the United States, 64 percent of the non-fuel mining operations are conducted by nine or fewer men, and the coal industry is characterized by several thousand smaller independent producers, still predominantly family-owned or controlled. In Chile, 80 percent of the mines can be classified as small mines. In the Philipines, approximately 60 percent of metal mining operations are classified as small mines. The SIME is actively engaged in mining all over the world, and very much so in the Pacific Rim. The Mineral Supply Process The whole process of bringing forth new mineral supply involves a dynamic sequence of activities, ranging from the initial exploration for a mineral occurrence to the production of a marketable product. A typical sequence is outlined in Figure 1. At the grass-roots exploration stage, a series of geological, geophysical and geochemical tests is aimed at locating a mineral occurrence. Especially in the early phases of such activities, the uncertainty (risk) surrounding a venture is high, since only general geological information exists on which to base a judgement of the economic viability of the venture. Such risk is attractive to few investors.

This article presents a series of guidelines by which the geologist can evaluate the likelihood of surface faulting and its probable extent at any given site in Southern California and Nevada. The information is intended primarily for geologists concerned with establishing design criteria for proposed nuclear plants. The geologic problems involved in the location of a nuclear power plant are fundamentally no different from those for other types of installations. They fall into four main categories: foundation stability, landslides and slope stability, shaking due to earthquakes, and surface faulting. For problems in the first three categories the foundation engineer, the geologist, and the seismologist can provide criteria for plant location and design, and these problems can generally be economically handled by appropriate design measures for a project of the magnitude of a nuclear plant. However, problems in the last category — surface faulting — are more difficult to handle and require a unique evaluation. Accordingly, this paper will deal primarily with the problem of establishing design criteria for surface faulting, particularly as it affects nuclear facilities. A nuclear reactor is a power source that for greater safety is contained in a heavy, air-tight structure, just as gas, oil, water, and other power sources must be contained. Surface faulting is significant in that it may reduce the integrity of the containment by affecting critical exterior piping or by breaching of the containment. A similar significance exists relative to dams or tanks for the storage of water, gas, or oil, except that in these latter examples the breaching of the container automatically releases the fluids to do their damage. This is not necessarily the case with the rupture of a reactor containment structure because the function of the containment is totally protective, i.e., it is necessary only in the event that radioactive products are released from the reactor, and there are many other safeguards to pre- vent this release even if the containment is ruptured. At the present time, nuclear power plants must be located near large sources of water for cooling the steam generated. The construction of an industrial facility of any kind on the coast line is esthetically distasteful to most people since, unfortunately, there is not enough coast to fulfill all the needs and all the desires of all the people. In most cases where industrial facilities encroach on the lives of citizens, there is no mechanism other than zoning laws by which a person can effectively protest. But in the case of a nuclear facility, the public hearing required by the Atomic Energy Commission provides a forum for dissent, as in recent case histories, and the question of safety provides objectors with a weapon for fighting the construction of the plant. The nature of a public hearing for a nuclear plant is such that the prospective owner and operator must prove that there is no undue hazard, whereas the objectors need only demonstrate that there is a reasonable doubt. It is in this situation that geology becomes the Achilles Heel of nuclear power plant location. For his investigation, the geologist has natural exposures of rock at the ground surface and a limited number of trenches and drill holes to give him a fairly complete picture of the distribution of the various rock types. From the surficial data, he must infer three more dimensions — depth below the surface, past time, and future time. Unlike many problems faced by engineers, the geologist has only this one set of data from which to reach a conclusion — he is unable to reproduce the natural sequence of events in order to obtain another set of data for comparison. Hence, by the very deductive nature of a geologic conclusion, it is difficult to prove a geologic conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt even to other geologists — and perhaps one should say especially to other geologists because the experience and background of a geologist will strongly influence his conclusion, and no two geologists have exactly the same experience and training. The engineer and the public official would like the geologist to conclude that faulting cannot occur at a given site or to assign a numerical value to the probability of its occurrence — but no responsible geologist can do either of these things. Sampling methods for feasibility studies are dependent on geological characteristics of the deposit being evaluated. A preliminary geostatistical study is required, taking into account autocorrelation aspects of variables under study in order that sample plan design can be optimized to produce grade and tonnage estimates within stipulated error limits. In general, regular sample distribution is to be aimed for, and regular sample lengths (from drill core or cuttings, for example) are preferred in order to facilitate statistical analysis. Sample plans are modified and improved (either technically or economically), as a sampling program proceeds and additional information is obtained. Bulk samples for metallurgical testing can be evaluated in terms of the variance shown by all such samples in a deposit and the internal variability of grade. Attention to these sources of variability will ensure proper evaluation of pilot test results from bulk samples. In addition, a general mineralogical study of a deposit is an important, often ignored, requirement in a more general but semi-quantitative evaluation of the representativeness of a bulk sample; and, moreover, provides information useful in optimizing plant design.

The structure of flotation reagents is important for their adsorption on mineral surfaces and thus for their flotation effectiveness. The influence of the structure of organic depressants on the flotation of fluorite and barite with anionic and cationic collectors was investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. In addition, adsorption, desorption, and electrokinetic results were employed to further elucidate the role and the correlation of the structural parameters for adsorption and the depressing effect. As hydrophilic reagents, different aliphatic and aromatic compounds capable of forming chelates with alkaline earth materials were used. For the depressing effect, the kind, number, and position of the polar groups in the molecule, as well as the structure of the reagent films play decisive roles.

THE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydrothermally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CEMENT AND CONCRETE LININGS During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, however, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 1 ½ pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with I2 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concrete and precast blocks. Experimental data 1,2 on the energy dissipation in polycrystalline materials over a large frequency spectrum (10-2 cps to 106 cps) suggests that the quality factor [(e= Q )] is independent of the frequency providing both fluid-saturated and ferromagnetic materials are excluded from the test data. Additional data 3 suggest that the quality factors are less at high pressures than at low pressure, i.e., Q increases as the pressure increases. Observations on the dissipation of single quartz crystals with their polycrystalline counterparts indicate that the energy dissipation is less for the single crystal than for the aggregate .2 Both of the above observations, particularly the latter, are indicative of the fact that the dissipation increases with increasing surface contact within the polycrystal, i.e., a frictional attenuation scheme may be operative. Knopoff and MacDonald 4 have shown that a friction model gives rise to a quality factor frequency independence property. A partial listing of some values of Q, observed for both metals and non-metals, is given in Tables I, II, and III. In Tables I and II, the data all show Qs>Qp, i.e., the energy loss per cycle for compressional body waves is greater than that for shear waves of the same frequency. Most samples in Table III show the same effect. It is objective of this paper to suggest: (1) a frictional attenuation scheme may account for the observed losses incurred during the propagation of low amplitude stress waves in dry brittle rock and, in particular, that such a scheme can account for the observed relative magnitudes of the quality factors for P and S wave motion; (2) a friction scheme can readily explain the difference between the dynamic and static moduli in dry brittle rock; (3) a friction scheme, while in itself an intrinsically

Environmental constraints can both delay and raise the cost of a major plant addition, often requiring a complete reevaluation of the plant site and the proposed project. In this case history, steps are presented which were followed in applying for environmental permits for a major addition to a lime plant. Methods are described for determining expected emission increases and for selecting the best control technology for each source. The description progresses through pre-application conferences with control agencies, the formal application procedure, computer modeling the air quality impact, and the methods followed in obtaining a favorable determination.

PRESENT-DAY processing in many industries, calcining, sintering, briquetting, beneficiation and nodulizing, increasingly calls for the handling of large volumes of hot bulk materials. Various types of conveyors have been employed. This discussion will cover the factors governing their selection. For temperature ranges up to 400°F, or approximately 200 °C, a wide range of conveyors is available. Special constructions of rubber conveyor belts, steel conveyor belts, vibrating and shaker conveyors, apron conveyors, and drag chain conveyors, all are used successfully. As temperatures go well above 400 2F, however, choice of conveyors is narrowly limited. This paper will consider the problem of handling bulk materials only where the temperatures exceed 400°F. The arbitrary selection of 400 °F as a dividing point undoubtedly can be challenged, as special conveyor belting constructions are available which are suitable for temperatures in excess of 400°F. However, when the relatively short life of such belts and the cost of their replacement, with the attendant down time, are balanced against the reliability and long service life of the properly designed steel constructed units to be discussed, there is little question in any operator's mind that the special belts are more expensive to use. Because the conveyors under study are for the handling of bulk materials, inevitably including a high proportion of fines, obviously wire mesh belts cannot be included for consideration. Even though this type of conveyor is widely used at high temperatures, i.e., for carrying glassware through a lehr, it is unsuited for the conveying of bulk materials, and therefore will be excluded from further discussion in this paper. Preliminary to the study of the conveyor itself is the determination as to whether the material is to be cooled while it is being handled, or whether the processing requires retention of all heat and the maintenance of a given temperature range. In the majority of cases cooling is incidental to or part of the handling process, when the handling, for example, follows completion of sintering, roasting, calcining, refining, or some other process. To meet such operating conditions successfully, the conveying medium used must have: 1—a construction capable of withstanding maximum initial temperatures of the material being handled. 2—a construction providing efficient heat transfer for cooling. 3—a construction providing dependable operation and long life with minimum service requirements, and 4—a construction providing controlled and efficient conveying. Under the usual conditions of cooling during the handling, the construction selected to withstand the initial maximum temperatures does not necessarily involve using alloys, as excellent results can be achieved with normal carbon steels and cast irons, when they are properly applied and proportioned. The earliest and simplest type of conveyor for handling very hot materials is the cast steel drag chain conveyor, still widely used for handling hot cement clinker, as illustrated by Figs. I and 2. Because of the rugged and generous proportions of the chain link design, low carbon steels are entirely suitable for the links. The pins, however, must be alloy steel. The simple, rugged construction of this type of conveyor makes it readily capable of withstanding high initial temperatures, even though the chain is operating buried in the material. The drag-chain type of conveyor has advantages and limitations. Although the efficiency of the heat transfer is relatively poor, the life of the conveyor is reasonably long, and because of its crude simplicity it does not require much servicing. However, as a conveyor, it is limited in capacity, and largely limited to horizontal runs. Furthermore, because of the crude design, heavy weight, and the chain operating at the temperature of the material, greatly reducing permissible operating chain pulls, this type of conveyor is limited to relatively short centers. Another type of conveyor that has been used for very hot materials is the cast pan conveyor. Because of its very generous proportions the cast pan, which is made of either cast iron or malleable iron, can withstand initial maximum temperatures. It also provides efficient heat transfer for cooling. Further, it is on efficient conveyor construction, which can be used for inclines. Because the chain employs rolling friction instead of sliding friction, and is not in the maximum temperature zone, much longer centers are possible. It is this type of conveyor that is frequently used in the casting of various metal pigs, pig iron, and aluminum; it is obvious, therefore, that very high initial temperatures are being handled. With this kind of conveyor the return run is frequently sprayed with water to accelerate heat transfer. The build-up of residual heat in the very heavy cast pans is thus overcome. The outboard roller steel pan conveyor is an improved pan conveyor' which provides high rates of heat transfer and substitutes formed steel pans for the heavy cast pans. It is a very efficient conveying medium. The details of this particular construction are clearly shown in Fig. 3. An early application of this type of conveyor is shown in Fig. 4. In this case the conveyor units are handling roasted phosphate rock at average temperatures of 1000" to 1500°F, and frequent maximum temperatures as high as 1900°F. Several widths are used. The capacity of the unit at a speed of 50 fpm is approximately 30 tph per inch of width at peak loadings, average capacity being about 1/3 of peak loading. The assembled conveyor is shown in Fig. 5, with views of both the top and the underside to show all the construction details. First attempts to apply computers for the modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing unit operations date back to almost twenty years. Since then substantial efforts have been directed to the development of computer software for mineral processing. Current literature indicates considerable activities in the development of computer packages for interactive and batch simulation of individual unit operations and integrated plant operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various simulation systems that have been described in the literature along with a discussion of present trends in the development of mineral processing simulation software. Finally, the paper includes a detailed discussion of the desirable features in future simulation packages.
