Oil development continued active in Wyoming during 1937, with much of the interest centered on prospecting for new pools, following a rather intensive seismograph play in 1936. The new fields of Lance Creek, Medicine Bow and Quealy were the centers of intense development in proved areas, but routine drilling occurred in most old fields. A new and deeper producing horizon (the Leo sand) was opened up in the Lance Creek field, which materially extends the producing area and will probably account for continued active development during 1938. The discovery in 1936 of oil in the Eocene Wasatch formation at Powder Wash, northwestern Colorado, tended for a time to stimulate prospecting in the deep Tertiary basins, but this interest as rapidly declined after drilling several failures on similar structures and the discovery that the productive area at Powder Wash itself was very small. A most interesting test of an Eocene structure was drilled by The Superior Oil Company of California on the South Baggs structure, in Carbon County, Wyoming. South Baggs is one of the best developed structures in the Red Desert Washakie Basin, which also includes the Hiawatha gas field and the Powder Wash gas and oil field. The Superior Oil Co. started the well according to contract but apparently had lost interest in the prospects, for it abandoned the well at 2138 ft. without testing the oil-bearing and gas-bearing horizons of the Wasatch. The Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. drilled a deep test in the Muskrat gas field to the Madison. This well discovered oil in the Embar formation, which was considered noncommercial because of depth. After the Embar was abandoned the hole was plugged back and the various sands tested by shooting through the casing with the Lane-Wells gun. The Lakota sand was found to contain high-pressure gas and the well was completed as a 24-million-foot gasser at 2175 lb. rock pressure. This is a new sand in an old field. The Italo Petroleum Co. drilled a flank well on the Hamilton dome structure and found oil in the lower Embar formation. IN 1943 the U. S. Bureau of Mines undertook drilling in an effort to develop new reserves of coking coal in an area near Paonia, Colo., as a part of an attempt to alleviate the shortage of known coking coal of good quality in the western United States. Geologic mapping of the area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey with the purpose of first furnishing guidance in location of drillholes and later aiding in interpreting the results of the drilling. The drilling program was under the general supervision of A. L. Toenges of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. J. J. Dowd and R. G. Travis were in charge of-the work in the field. Geologic mapping was started by D. A. Andrews of the Geological Survey in the summer of 1943 and was continued from the spring of 1944 to 1949 by the writer. The first few holes drilled failed to locate coking coal, but in the summer of 1944 coking coal was discovered by drilling 6 miles east of Somerset, Colo., the site of present mining. In the succeeding years, 1945 to 1948, 100 to 150 million tons of coal suitable for coking were blocked out by drilling. The ensuing discussion of the geologic controls on the distribution of coking coal in the area is based on the geologic mapping as well as the drilling done in the Paonia area, more complete descriptions of which have appeared or are in process of publication.1-5 In order that the possible geologic controls affecting the present distribution of coking coal may be considered, it is necessary to discuss briefly the indicators. of coking quality coals. Coking Coal Coal that cokes has the property of softening to form a pastelike mass at high temperatures under reducing conditions in the coke oven. This softening is accompanied by the release of the volatile constituents as bubbles of gas. After release of the contained gases and upon cooling, a hard gray coherent but spongelike mass remains that is referred to as coke. This substance varies greatly in physical properties and, to be suitable for industrial use, must be sufficiently dense and strong to withstand the crushing pressure of heavy furnace loads. Western coals have a generally high volatile content and therefore form a satisfactory coke only when they attain a rather high fluidity during the process of heating and distillation in-the coke oven. When this high degree of fluidity is developed, the volatile constituents escape and leave a finely porous coke. On the other hand, when the degree of fluidity is low the product is an excessively porous and therefore physically weak mass that is called char.6 Small quantities of oxygen present in coal are believed to decrease the fluidity of the material during the coking process and to favor the development of char rather than coke. In consequence, coal chemists have for some time considered the possibility of developing an index to coking. qualities by inspection of chemical analyses of coals.7 A formula has now been developed that does permit a rough preliminary estimate of the cokability of coal on the basis of the analysis on an ash and moisture-free basis. Coals may be eliminated as possible coking fuels if the oxygen content is greater than 11 pct. Similarly the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen must be greater than 0.5 and the ratio of fixed carbon to volatile constituents must be greater than 1.3. If the coal, on the basis of these limiting factors, appears to have possible coking qualities, the following formula permits determination of the coking index: Coking index =[ a+b+c+d 5] a equals 22/oxygen content on ash and moisture- free basis, . b equals two times the hydrogen content divided by oxygen content on moisture and ash-free basis, c equals fixed carbon/1.3 x volatile matter, and d equals the heating value on moist, ash-free basis/13,600. Coking indices higher than 1.0 suggest that the coal will coke, and indices above 1.1 indicate good coking tendencies. Although generally usable, this formula is not completely satisfactory because the percentage of oxygen shown in ultimate analyses is derived only by difference; i.e., by subtracting the sum of the percentages of the constituents determined analytically from 100 pct.8,9 Although the coking index indicates the coking tendencies of coal, it is necessary to make physical tests of coke before its industrial value can be determined. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed a standard procedure for determining the approximate strength of coke that would be formed from a given coal. In this test one part of ground coal, mixed with 15 parts of carborundum, is baked to form a standard briquette. The weight, in kilograms, necessary to crush the briquette is termed the agglutinating index. This test determines the relative fluidity attained in the coking process by measuring the cementing strength of the coal in the briquette. A

The price of crude oil in Kentucky did not change very much during 1935 until the latter part of the year, but more stabilized conditions and an increase in consumption of natural gas made the year a more profitable one than the year 1934. The production of crude oil in 1935 amounted to 5,175,054 bbl. as compared to 4,814,904 bbl. in 1934. The fields of eastern Kentucky, producing from the Weir sand of the Waverly group of the Lower Mississippian series, in Johnson, Magoffin, Lawrence and Elliott counties, produced 826,001 bbl. of oil in 1935 as compared with 902,247 bbl. in the previous year. No new wells were drilled in this area during the year, except those for use as intake wells in repressuring. What has been done in the few small areas within these fields in the way of repressuring has produced results sufficient to a great extent to offset the natural decline of all the field. It is probable the drilling of new wells and construction of new plants will be such as to cause these fields to produce more in 1936 than was produced in the past year. This is based on the fact that the sand is highly favorable for repressuring and the results obtained show from 300 to 500 per cent increase in production. TOWARD the close of 1925, a British geologist, T. Landell Mills, brought to the notice of .A. Chester Beatty and selection Trust Ltd. certain mineral areas in southern Yugoslavia. Mills' data, which included rough maps and preliminary reports by' a Yugoslav engineer, Jules Draskocy, appeared interesting to Reatty, and early in 1926, I, with three British assistants, proceeded to Serbiaand commenced the investigation of several groups of ancient mine workings. They were found to be extensive and the geological conditions-schists, limestones, and andesitic intrusive-favorable for mineral deposits. At Stan Trg, on the Trepca Concession, five rniles east of Kosovska Mitrovica, an ancient filled adit was found, a shelter-hut erected, and work started in reopening this adit.

The Getchell area in the northern Osgood Range, Humboldt County, Nevada, was first prospected in the late 1800s for silver, copper, and gold; the first recorded mention of mining activity concerned a silver discovery. The September 17, 1874 edition of the Winnemucca Silver State notes that the Crystal Mining District was newly organized in the Fremont Range (as the Osgood Range was then called) to include discoveries of silver, lead, and antimony made on the Louisa claim. The name Crystal was derived from the plentiful quartz crystals found in-cavities near the prospects. This same area, occurring on the northwestern margin of the Osgood granodiorite stock, was later mined as the Richmond tungsten property, and crystals may still be found there in cavities in a massive garnet tactite. By 1878, how-ever, the name Crystal had been abandoned in favor of Potosi. The next flurry of activity in the Osgood Range was reported in 1899 when a copper strike on Granite Creek in the southern portion of the range received attention. The copper occukences were in a granite contact zone on the southeastern edge of the Osgood stock and, in 1916, the first tungsten in the district was discovered in the same deposit. During the last part of the nineteenth century, cattle and sheep were brought into the Kelly Creek Valley east of the Osgood Mountains by various ranchers. Alphonso and Adrian Bernard were among these ranchers, and in the first decade of the twentieth century, one of them recognized the altered rock where the Getchell Center it is now located. A 3-m (10-ft) deep prospect pit was dug on the outcrop, but the highest assay ran about $11/t ($10 per st). No further work was done on the gold-bearing rock. In 1934, Emmet Chase of Battle Mountain and Ed Knight of Golconda prospected in the area of the Bernard prospect pit and located several lode claims. At this time, Noble H. Getchell, a state senator, was looking for new mining opportunities to develop. He held interests in the Gold Circle Consolidated at Midas, which was becoming a losing venture. Chase and Knight brought their discovery to his attention, and he grubstaked them to prospect further in the area. In need of financial backing, Getchell solicited the help of George Wingfield, Sr., who held a minor interest in the Gold Circle. Wingfield was a successful banker and mine operator during the heyday of Tonopah and Goldfield, and he had become good friends with Henry C. Frick and Bernard Baruch. Wingfield let Baruch in on several very successful mining ventures in Goldfield, and Baruch returned the favor by underwriting the financing of the Getchell mine. Eleanor Roosevelt and Jack Dempsey were early stockholders in the Getchell operation. George Wingfield brought his brother-in-law, Roy A. Hardy, a consulting engineer who had constructed the American Flat mill near Virginia City, to look at the property. Upon inspecting the Chase-Knight claims, Hardy declared the whole area to be mineralized. A crosscut was driven to check the extent of the ore, and the results were better than anticipated. The locators were reportedly given $50,000 for the claims. The Getchell Mine, Inc., was organized on November 5, 1936. A small railroad that ran from Battle Mountain to Austin was purchased, and the ties and rails were moved to Getchell to be used in underground exploration. Enough reserves were found in the Center and South pit areas to construct a 40 t/d (44 stpd) mill. The financial and engineering help for the mill was provided by the Newmont Mining Co. for a 17 1/2% interest in the corporation. Newmont set about trying to solve the metallurgical problems with the sulfide ore, and also directed the early development work. DETERMINATION OF SILICA OXIDE iron ores usually are found in intimate association with silica and phosphorus compounds. Their quantitative separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the chemist. Silicic acids may represent various degrees of dehydration. They are exceedingly weak, but combine with metallic acids and form some of the most stable oxides in nature, the silicates. When iron ores are treated with hydrochloric acid, they yield practically all their iron. However, apart from rare exceptions, varying amounts of insoluble residues of silica, alumina, lime, magnesia and compounds of phosphorus, sulphur, titanium, chromium and others will be left. If the oxides of silicon, aluminum and titanium are present in small quantities, the insoluble residue is generally very small, but the presence of these oxides more usual in larger quantities. Therefore, only a special treatment can break the bond between these elements. Ore Residues Acids remove the soluble constituent of the ore, leaving the insoluble residue, which chemically is rock or gangue and must be treated accordingly. Alkali carbonates are used frequently to break up the residue, but other fluxes have also been recommended, such as a number of lead and boron salts. The introduction of these salts, which offers certain advantages, requires, however, their removal before the other constituents can be analyzed, and this elimination is sometimes difficult. Usually in quantitative analysis silicates are dissociated by fusing them in a platinum crucible with sodium carbonate, thereby forming sodium silicate, Na2SiO3, sodium aluminate, Na2A1204, sodium titanate, Na2TiOs, and carbonates of other elements. All the carbonates are soluble in hydrochloric acid, but also some silicic acid is formed that must be rendered insoluble. To this end the solution is evaporated several times, as the first evaporation still leaves as much as 5 per cent of the silica soluble. Even after a number of evaporations, minute quantities of silica may be found with the iron and alumina present. Perchloric Acid as an Agent for Dehydrating Silicic Acid Perchloric acid, HCI04, (60 per cent), has been used for years as a solvent, but few chemists have used it to dehydrate silica. It is derived from anhydrous perchloric C1207, which is most unstable and dangerous. Perchloric acid is a strong oxidizing agent, which boils at 203°C. It is more effective in rendering silica insoluble than any other known agent, and most rapid in action. An improved acid for the treatrrzent of sulfate-con-raining limestones and dolomites is described. The acid is designed to reduce he reprecipitation of dissolved calcium sulfate and the possibility of plugging permeable flow channels. In addition, this improved acid has a much lower reaction rate than that of regular acid; the advantages of a "retarded" acid are obtainable. Field testing of the acid has shown it suitable for use in sulfate-containing formations. Substantial improvements in productivity generally resulted. INTRODUCTION Acid treatments of limestones, dolomites and other formations bearing carbonate deposits are frequently unsuccessful when the calcareous formation contains sulfate, either as anhydrite (CaSO,) or gypsum (CaSO4. 2H2O). Preliminary dissolution in acid followed by redeposition of calcium sulfate appears to be a major factor contributing to poor well performance after acidizing. The precipitate is usually the gypsum form of calcium sulfate, but in higher temperature formations it may be anhydrite. The freshly precipitated crystals are nearly always very small and needle-like. They may occupy a gross volume many times that of the original anhydrite crystals and will obviously constitute an impediment to flow through newly enlarged flow channels. It is believed that the redeposition problem is most severe when anhydrite lines the fracture systems and large pores which supply the effective permeability of a formation. Microscopic inclusions of calcium sulfate also present large sulfate surface areas for dissolution in acid. In either case, great amounts of calcium sulfate may dissolve before the acid can be spent on formation carbonates. For regular spent acid (originally 15 per cent hydrochloric acid) the precipitate could be as much as 270 Ib gypsum/1000 gal acid. Two techniques have been applied by the industry for reducing sulfate plugging during acidizing. The method'.' commonly employed in the field is the attempted removal of a quantity of regular treating acid before it has reacted completely with the formation. This is practiced because the solubility of calcium sulfate is greater in a solution that is still acidic than in one which has been largely spent on the formation rock. The chance of precipitative plugging is therefore reduced if the withdrawal is successful. However, it is often impossible to get the acid out of the formation before precipitation occurs. A second possible method, which at first glance appears practical, involves addition to the acid of sequestering agents which form strong soluble complexes with calcium ions. These chemicals do increase the "solubility" of calcium sulfate in fresh acid, but to a lesser extent in spent acid. The sequestering agents have, therefore, proved unsatisfactory because the amount of sulfate eventually deposited from the spent acid may be greater than that from regular acid. Another logical approach to the problem of calcium sulfate reprecipitation is the prevention of the initial dissolution of calcium sulfate by the common ion effect. This may be accomplished by adding a soluble calcium salt to the fresh acid. The use of calcium salts in treating acids is not entirely new. An earlier suggested use of a soluble calcium salt in hydrochloric acid apparently failed to recognize the full extent to which the solubility of calcium sulfate could be suppressed. The present study extends this earlier work and adds certain improvements toward the development of a practical anti-anhydrite acid. LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT Calcium Sulfate Solubility Table 1 shows the results of a laboratory study performed to establish the effect of calcium chloride concentration on gypsum solubility. Because of the strong tendency of calcium sulfate to form supersaturated solutions, accurate solubilities are difficult to determine. These solubility data probably are reliable to within ± 15 per cent. The solubility of calcium sulfate in 15 weight per cent hydrochloric acid increases with increasing temperature. This trend is also followed in hydrochloric acid which cantains calcium chloride. This is contrary to the solubility behavior of calcium sulfate in water, wherein the solubility decreases with increasing temperature.

Michigan reports another record year. Its production of 18,605,000 bbl. exceeds any previous year's total and is 2,000,000 bbl. over 1937, the previous record year. Production in 1938 brings the accumulated total for the state to a little over 100,000,000 bbl. It has taken 14 years to reach this accumulative figure, which would meet the needs of our country for about one month. Twelve new oil and gas fields were opened in 1938 and 978 tests for oil and gas were completed, of which 566 were oil wells, 25 gas wells and 387 dry holes. The new oil discovered is probably about equal to the oil produced during the year. Activities in 1938 The Temple field, Clare County, was the discovery of the year. Since July, 46 wells have been completed, and although not yet outlined it appears that more than 2000 acres have been proved for production from the Monroe of Devonian age, at a depth of 3900 ft. This discovery is the result of a wildcat test along a trend northwestward from the older fields of the central basin. The Edenville pool, Midland County, ranks second among the new fields. Thirty-five producing wells have been drilled to the Dundee at 3800 feet. The surprise development was in southwestern Alichigan, Allegan and Van Buren Counties, where six new Traverse lime pools were opened with a daily production of about 8000 bbl. at the end of the year. This is the first consistent Traverse production in the state and is about 100 miles southwest of the producing areas of the central basin. These fields have had a rapid development because of the shallow depths, which range from 900 to 1500 ft. Bloomingdale, Van Buren County, had a town-lot boom, and 72 wells have been drilled there since August 1938. Small operators from many states have been attracted to this shallow territory, and the coming year will see much drilling in these and surrounding counties. The Buckeye field, Gladwin County, led the state in amount of oil produced. Its total of over 7,000,000 bbl. was far ahead of that of any other pool.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. WITH the great expansion currently being made in the aluminum output of the United States, not only by the company that has heretofore been the sole producer but by a now organization in the field it is only natural to wonder to what degree the; ore reserves of the United States can contribute to the growing consumption. For the three-year period 1937-'39 the U.S. Bureau of Mine's figures indicate that the annual domestic production of bauxite averaged about 370,000 long tons, compared with average, annual import of about 194,000 long tons. About 85 per cent of the imports came from Surinam, nearly all of which went into aluminum manufacture. Not all of the or -kipped from mines in the United States is used to make alumimun however as Bureau figures indicate that in these three years an average of only 48 per cent of the domestic ore shipment were so used the abrasive chemical and other industries taking respectively 27, 21, and 4 per cent of the output. Less than a decade ago the consumption of coal in Alaska was practically limited to the salmon canneries and the few ode-mines and settlements along the Pacific coast of the The-itory. The thousands, who have sought and mined gold on the Seward peninsula since 1898, have much impoverished the long-accumulated supply of driftwood, and at the same time the constantly increas-ng demand for fuel, on the part of the placer-camps and steamers, has resulted in heavy inroads being made on the accessible timber of the Yukon and its tributaries. While, on the one hand, the immediately available store of wood has decreased, on the other, the consumption of fuel because of the rapid expansion of the mining and fishery industries, and the attendant growth of population has much in-creased. Alaska, therefore, offers a constantly growing market or coal and other fuels. As the local coal-production has been nsignificant, the demand has been met by importations from Washington, British Columbia, and even from Pennsylvania and Australia. Fuel- Consumption. Mr. D. H. Jarvis, Collector for Alaska, has kept systematic records of the trade of the Territory since 1903. The statis-ics of the coal-importations of the past two years are shown n Table I. If data were available for a longer period of years, he increase of coal-importations would be much more striking.

G. Edmunds—Solid solubility is considered to be of either the interstitial or the substitutional type. Is it possible, in a binary alloy as the simplest case, that some of the solute atoms are present in the normal lattice sites (substitutionally or filling lattice vacancies) while simultaneously others are in interstitial positionss One might even ask whether a distribution of the two types may be the normal situation. H. M. Meyer—Metastable states of interstitial atoms occupying vacant lattice sites possibly occur as well as of substitutional atoms squeezed in between regular matrix positions. However (as we know since Hume-Rothery), the solute atoms choose between the two kinds of solutions; consequently, every solute will be unequivocally either substitutional or interstitial in the equilibrium state of the solid solution. M. Balicki—In view of the fact that the authors apparently correlate the analysis of the alloys at the ingot stage with the properties exhibited at the testing stage, I would like to ask whether this is a fully justifiable procedure. In other words, how good are their determinations of solute concentration for correlating them with the mechanical properties. The answer to this question may explain some of the divergencies. Assuming good enough homogenization of the samples and exact determination of mechanical properties the position of the plotted experimental points will depend solely upon the accuracy of composition determination. If this is not accurate, say due to loss or pickup of elements during processing from the ingot to the testing stage, or due to a systematic error in the method employed for obtaining solute concentration data, the points will deviate from their true position and may align themselves along a different curve than the one expected. H. V. Kinsey—We have been studying the creep-rupture properties of titanium-base alloys at 1000°F. In the course of this work, anomalies in behavior of the alloys that would suggest that the material under test was becoming stronger as the test progressed have been observed. If this was so, the most likely explanation that we could think of was that the test bars were absorbing oxygen and nitrogen from the air during the test and were thereby becoming strengthened. In an attempt to determine the strengthening effect of absorbed oxygen and nitrogen the following experiment was conducted. A length of cold-rolled titanium was supplied by the E. I. du Pont Co. Two test bars, having a 1/4 in. diam gauge length, were prepared from this material. One bar was tested in the as-received condition. The second bar was heated in air at 1550°F for 100 hr and subsequently air cooled prior to testing. A testing temperature of 1000°F was employed. The results of these tests are tabulated in table 11. In the author's opinion, is it reasonable to assume that the bar that was exposed to air at 1550°F for 100 hr was stronger because it absorbed oxygen and nitrogen from the air during this heat treatment? W. L. Finlay (authors' reply)—Direct experimental evidence for or against Mr. Edmunds' interesting suggestion will probably never be available. It seems possible, however, that mixed interstitial-substitutional solid solution might well occur with interstitial elements. During the war years the drilling activity in Canada has been steadily increasing and still further increase is expected in 1945. The production of oil, which in the past has come largely from the Turner Valley field in Alberta, shows a decline since 1942, the peak year. New discoveries made in 1944, however, give promise of replacing the decrease from Turner Valley where the crude-oil production in 1944 was nearly 1,800,000 bbl. less than in 1942, but with an increase of 145,000 bbl. in natural gasoline, a product of great value to the war effort. A very considerable part of the decline in Alberta has been offset by new production of more than a million barrels in 1944 from the Norman Wells field, in the Mackenzie River area of the Northwest Territories. It should not be forgotten, however, that this is largely due to the Canol development, a war project, the future of which is dependent on many factors not connected with an ordinary commercial operation. The year 1944 has been the best in new discoveries in Alberta for all time. The discovery of a new deep field at Jumping-pound, 20 miles west of Calgary, with the hopc of a type of product similar to that of Turner Valley is the culmination of many years of effort to interpret the subsurface structures in relation to the complicated surface foothills faulting and folding. In this case the subsurface structure on the Paleozoic limestone was inferred from geological investigations but precisely defined by seismograph. In addition to Jumpingpound the discovery of oil of 34.5 gravity at a depth of less than 5000 ft, in the Devonian of the Plains at Princess, 125 miles east of Calgary, is of great significance since this is the first substantial production from the Devonian in Alberta, although previously some oil had been obtained at two places from the Devonian in the foothills. The effect of this discovery is already apparent in the number of wells now drilling to the Devonian in the southern Plains. In southern Alberta a new producing area has been found in a Lower Cretaceous sand at Barnwell, a few miles west of Taber. Also, at Conrad, 20 miles southeast of Taber, an important new discovery has been made at a depth of about 3000 ft. in a sand in Jurassic shales, in a strali-graphic trap on the northeast flank of the Sweetgrass arch. In northeast Central Alberta an important extension has been found in the Lloydminster area, where only a few wells have so far been drilled. A new well 3 1/2 miles south of the previous producers found a coarser sand at the productive horizon and as a result will have an increased daily yield. At Blackfoot, 9 miles west of Lloydrninster, a new producing area in the Lower Cretaceous may have been discovered at a depth of 2004 ft. At the end of 1944 the well was being tested. Forty-four unsuccessful wildcat wells were drilled in Alberta in 1944. The decline of Turner Valley, the major producing field, was anticipated at the beginning of the war and in an effort to offset this and encourage new development the Dominion Government put into force tax concessions and other measures that,

CONTROLLED cold work is used between solution heat treatment and precipitation heat treatment for producing certain tempers of the commercial aluminum base alloy 2219 (designation of the Aluminum Association, U.S.A.) which contains 6.3 pet Cu as the major ingredient responsible for the age hardening. The complete composition limits for this alloy are listed in Table I. The alloy has been described in detail,' and the control of the heat treatment has also been published.2 Beneficial effects of such cold work in other alloys have also been pointed out.3'4 NO data have been published on the effects of varying amounts of cold work under fixed aging conditions. In connection with an investigation of the possibility of providing the desired cold work by explosively generated shock waves, it became desirable to investigate the effect of variable cold work, and to compare the re -sults with those obtained from explosives. An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. The revised program-written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State's Computation Center-is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following: 1) Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all airways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2) Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3) Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values. The basis of analysis used is the Hardy Cross method of successive approximation for solution of any fluid network, explained in detail in the earlier article. In brief, corrections to assumed air flows are computed for all the loops of a network; following distribution to the airways of each loop, the process is repeated until acceptable accuracy is attained. When a hand or desk-calculator solution is used, there is advantage to close approximation of the actual flows in the original assumption of air-flow distribution in the network. Since publication of the previous paper, in which assumption of initial quantities was also necessary in the computer solution, the program has been modified to make the first distribution itself, assigning the total quantity to one specified path in a split and then proceeding to correct the flows. The number of iterations required for a high-accuracy solution is little affected, at least in networks of few loops, 10 to 15 being sufficient to reduce the error to 1 pct or less. The principal limitation of the original program was that it contained no provision for handling a fan. Further, it did not determine the overall head loss in the network and was not designed for multiple parallel openings, such as occur in coal mines. The revised program was written to overcome these disadvantages and also to print out the adjusted flows for all airways, corrected for the system operating point. At the present time, the program can handle only an external fan. The procedure employed in solving a ventilation network is now as follows: 1) Input data consisting of airway characteristics and loop designation along with assumed direction of flow, for each branch of the network and any trunk airways, are fed into the computer. 2) Employing the resistance relationship, where R is resistance, K is friction factor, P is perimeter, L is length, A is area, and n is number of airways (where multiple intakes and returns are employed); values are computed for all airways. 3) An arbitrary, continuous route of flow through the circuit—from beginning to end—is selected and the path identified by airway numbers and read in. 4) Based on a total assumed quantity of flow Q (usually 100,000 cfm.) the computer employs the procedure described in the previous article in distributing quantities of flow among all the airways until a satisfactory level of accuracy has been attained (in the current program, the machine is turned off when the cumulative corrective error in cfm, is reduced to five times the number of airways). 5) Airway head losses H are calculated by the relation H = R Q2 and cumulated along the original designated flow route to find the overall head loss for the network. Trunk airways are then included to obtain the mine head.
