The notch sensitivity of titanium alloys is affected by impurity content, microstructure, and heat treatment. Using notch tensile properties to evaluate notch sensitivity, three commercial titanium-base alloys were investigated over the temperature range of -320o to 390°F. The alloys studied were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo. Six interstitial levels were studied for each alloy in four mi-crostmctural conditions. The ff- 0 alloys were studied in both the annealed and heat-treated condition. All tests were conducted using 1/4-in. diam round tensile samples. The notched samples had a 50 pct notch with a notch sharpness (a/r) of 53, corresponding to Kt 6.3. Notch sensitivity was increased by increased interstitial content, low temperature, and acicular-type microstructures. The heat-treated, high-interstitial content - 13 alloys were more notch sensitive than the same alloys in the annealed condition. In addition, minima in the notch tensile-temperature curves were observed at temperatures near 32°F. These minima became more pronounced with increasing interstitial content. 1 HE increaseduse of titanium alloys in high strength applications at subzero temperatures requires that a better under standing of the low-temperature behavior of the alloys be obtained. At low temperatures, metals generally exhibit increased strength with lowered ductility and tohness. Notch sensitivity and the factors which influence it become more important as the strength level is increased and the temperature is decreased. Some of the factor s which affect notch sensitivity in ti- tanium alloys are composition, interstitial content, microstructure, and heat-treatment condition. In this paper, the results of a study of these variables on the notch sensitivity of three titanium alloys at temperatures from —320o to 390o are reported. The notch geometry selected for this program was chosen to provide a severe test of notch sensitivity. The ability of the metal to flow without initiating fracture under these severe conditions is reflected in the notch-strength values. Since notch strength is, in part, determined by the constraint exerted by the combined tensile stresses, the behavior of notch specimens reflects the properties of the material under combined stresses. For example, a material with a high notch-unnotch strength ratio may be expected to withstand the biaxial stresses encountered in a pressure vessel better than a material with a low ratio of notch-unnotch strengths. This implies that maximum strength alone is not a sufficient criterion for applications of this type. It further may be concluded that the various conditions that promote poor notch behavior also will affect adversely the performance of materials under combined stresses. In the alloys studied, these included low temperatures, high interstitial levels, and hasformed microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Three alloys, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo, were purchased from commercial producers as 2-in.-dam rod stock. Oxygen and nitrogen were added to these alloys by remelting to obtain a variety of interstitial contents as shown in Table I. Oxidation rates of single-crystal and poly crystalline zirconium in oxygen at temperatures from 307° to 815°C obey the parabolic rate law for short ex-posure time, 4 to 6 hr. The activation energy for the oxidation of single-crystal zirconium between 420° and 790°C is 42.6 ± 0.7 kcal per mole, and in the temperature range 307" to 600°C the activation energy for oxidation of poly crystalline zirconium is approximately the same. The high-activation energy is indicative that diffusion through the bulk oxide film is the primary mode of mass transport for both types of metal. The higher oxidation rates for poly -crystalline zirconium in this temperature range were attributed to differences in the orientation of the grains in the metal with respect to the oxidizing surfaces. Above 600°C, vain growth was observed in polycrystalline zirconium, and the oxidation rates approached those of single-crystal zirconium. ThE kinetic data of previous oxidation studies1-' of zirconium in oxygen have been interpreted by both parabolic and cubic rate laws. There is some evidence that there is a transition from the parabolic to the cubic rate law at prolonged exposures, but the question is still controversial. For the parabolic rate law activation energies are reported in the range 18.6 to 35 kcal per mole, and for the cubic rate law in the range 38 to 47 kcal per mole. So far as the mechanism of zirconium oxidation is concerned, inert marker studies10,11 have indicated that the oxidation proceeds by oxygen (anion) diffusion through the oxide film toward the metal-metal oxide interface. Pemslerl2 observed that the orientation of the grains in the zirconium metal substrate affected the rate of formation of the oxide film on the surfaces of the grains and that the orientation dependence of the corrosion rate persisted beyond the initial stages of reaction. The rate of oxidation was a minimum when the c axis of the grain was parallel to the surface of the sample, and rose to a maximum when the c axis was inclined at about 20 deg to the plane of sample surface, and decreased again at higher inclinations. cox13 observed that in 300°C steam a thin oxide film was formed initially on zirconium and that this oxide film, which exhibited interference colors, became dark first along the grain boundaries and then over the whole surface in an inhomogeneous manner as the film thickened. Cox proposed a mechanism in which oxygen diffused along preferred paths created by grain boundaries in the metal and formed a much thicker film at or near the grain boundary than on the central zone of the grain. In the present study, the oxidation rates of single crystals of zirconium were measured in oxygen and compared with the oxidation rates of polycrystalline zirconium of the same bar stock. It was felt that such a comparison would elucidate the role of grain boundaries in the metal substrate. SAMPLE PREPARATION Single crystals of zirconium were prepared by following the procedure of I3apperport,14 starting with 1/4-in. rod purchased as crystal-bar zirconium. Zirconium rods 2 in. long were wrapped in tungsten foil and sealed in quartz tubes at pressures of less than 10-6 mm of mercury. Large single crystals were grown by thermal cycling above and below the a-/3 transformation temperature, 862°C. Several specimens were simultaneously subjected to the same cycling procedure, heating to 1200°C, holding for 4 hr, then cooling in the furnace and holding at a temperature of 840°C for 5 to 10 days. This cycle was repeated five or six times for each set of specimens. The grain size of the crystal-bar zirconium before thermal cycling was between 10 and 30 p. Fig. 1 shows the microstructure of an end section of as-received crystal-bar zirconium. A longitudinal section of each zirconium rod after thermal cycling was polished and examined under polarized light, see Fig. 2, and the largest single crystals were selected for this study. Zirconium rods 1/8 in. in diameter and 1/2 in. long with spherical ends were machined from the single crystals and from the as-received bar stock. An X-ray examination showed that the c axis of the single crystals made either a 34-deg or an 89-deg angle with the rod axis. The specimens were chemically etched for 2 min in solution consisting of 15 parts hydrofluoric acid (48 pct), 80 parts nitric acid, and 80 parts water. Hall measurements have been made on three groups of silicon samples, which were implanted with boron, aluininunz, and phosphorus ions. Boron and phosphorus implants show essentially bulk properties when annealed under previously determined conditions, i.e., 15 min at 80O°C for boron and 10 mirz at 600°C for phosphorus. Bulk properties were also observed in alu?rrilzum-implanted samples when ion concentrations were below 1015 cm-'; however, strange low- terrzperalure behavior and a falloff in cavrier concenlralion was observed for sarnples with ion concenlration abozle loL5 ern-'. This can be attributed to solid-solubility effects since the average bulk concentration f0.r the sample exhibiting bulk properties was below the reported solubility limit for aluminum, while the other samples were above the limit. A detailed study of the annealirzg process indicates that mobilities reach bulk c~alues in phosphorus implants at 250DC, in alutninurn ivnplanls a1 500°C, and in boron implants at 700°C. A simple rnodel has been proposed to fit the annealing data. THE technique of semiconductor doping by direct injection of energetic ions is being actively investigated at this Center. Previously published results from this laboratory have been concerned with the investigation of implanted profiles in silicon and the electrical properties of the resultant p-n structures.1'2 Diode properties have been reported for junctions produced by implantation of boron ions and aluminum ions in n-type silicon and phosphorus ions in p-type silicon. Reverse current characteristics, as well as electron diffraction data, have indicated that the damage to the structure produced by the energetic ions during the stopping process can be minimized by a gentle anneal. The time-temperature conditions for this process have been determined by sheet resistivity studies.3 Electrical profiles of implanted phosphorus ions which have been determined by a differential sheet conductivity technique are based on the assumption that the carrier mobilities and activation energies for ionization are the same as in bulk silicon. These assumptions have been substantiated experimentally by measurement of Hall constants and resistivities of these implanted structures and the results are presented herein. After establishing the bulk property equivalence of the annealed layers, a more detailed examination of the annealing process was undertaken. The sheet resistivity technique initially used to determine anneal conditions has been broadened to include Hall constants and mobility behavior with anneal conditions. PROCEDURE The three groups of samples prepared for Hall measurements were implanted with mass-separated beams of boron, aluminum, and phosphorus ions. Ion concentrations are equivalent surface concentration and they have been determined from beam current measurements during implantation. Implant conditions for the samples are shown in Table I. In all cases, the samples had previously been angle-lapped on one edge and the junction delineated with an HF-copper sulfate solution. The surfaces of the implanted regions of the samples were exposed to the delineating solution and in the case of the "n"-type phosphorus-implanted areas it was later discovered that a finite amount of surface could be etched by this solution. This is discussed in the section on results. The implanted samples were ultrasonically cut into the conventional six-probe configuration shown in Fig. l.* In the annealing studies, for which the meas- urements were taken at room temperature, the sample holder was a Bakelite jig incorporating tungsten mechanical probes. The other measurements were taken using a conventional liquid-nitrogen cryostat, in which the temperature could be varied from 77" to about 400°K. For these measurements, 10-mil aluminum dots were evaporated onto the samples and alloyed with the silicon at 530°C for 15 min. The samples were then mounted in flat-packs, and gold wires were bonded to the aluminum dots. The electrical measurements were made with either a Leeds & Northrup K-5 Potentiometer, a Keithley 147 Nanovolt Null Detector, or a Keithley 601 Electrometer. No external bias was applied to the substrate. There is an inherent self-biasing arrangement at one or the other of the current contacts (depending upon the polarity), and this suffices to limit the current flow to the implanted layer. THE purpose of this paper is to relate briefly the development of magnetic separation and its extension from the separation of iron into its present use in the nonmetallic field, to suggest possible future exten-sions of its field of usefulness and its possible cooperation with other separating methods. The engineering design of separating machines, and statistics as to the number of machines in operation, types, their location and production are outside the scope of this paper. Specific data will be given, however, on certain selected applications. A large part of human endeavor consists in separating one thing from another; the good from the bad, the desired from the undesired. In fact, a philosopher might plausibly claim that separating things into categories and choosing between them is the object of thought itself. In dealing with matter, separation is nowhere more inherently necessary to attain our objects than in mining and metallurgy. Both our desire and our ability to make separations are results of the physical differences between things. Gross separations such as removing ore from worthless rock or coal from slate are usually made visually and depend upon form and color, which are physical properties. When the desired and the undesired things are intimately mixed, however, it becomes impractical to select visually even if the individual particles are readily recognizable to the eye, and some automatic way of making the particles separate themselves on the basis of their own inherent differences in physical properties must be resorted to. Some of the physical properties which have been used as a basis of separation are: color, shape, hardness, size, density, elasticity, surface properties (surface tension in contact with liquids, etc.), electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and magnetic susceptibility. Differences in these properties are used in the following methods of separation: color sorting, sifting, settlement in air and in liquids, floatsink methods, flotation, electrostatic and magnetic separation.

The attraction is rather the devastation the mine has brought to the surrounding countryside which has made Queenstown literally the most colorful mining town in Australian history.

PROSPERITY of the gold miner has continued with attendant construction of numerous plants, many of them small but some of good size. Many new mills have been erected in Canada and in the Philippines, end one should mention the new mill at Cripple Creek, Colo., a custom plant allowing a choice of flotation, cyaniding, or roasting and cyaniding. Flotation is a feature of many of the new plants and some existing mills have been remodeled to use flotation in place of amalgamation and cyaniding. The Utah Copper Co. has re- opened its Arthur mill and operations are being resumed in the big Ray, Chino, and Inspiration copper mills. Examples of new construction are the Mountain City 300-ton copper flotation mill in northern Elko County, Nevada; the Star zinc mill and one or two other mills in the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho; and the 500-ton mill for the Buena Vista mine at Stewart, B. C. The last-named is to be installed underground, following the example of the zinc mill at Gilman, Colo., and he small Doyle jigging plant in the Wisconsin zinc fields.

The Kerr Addison process involves the cyanidation, flotation, and roasting of graphitic gold ore. The grinding and treatment section of the present mill has at the present time a capacity of 1400 stpd and the precipitation section has a capacity of 6000 stpd. The grind is maintained at 80%, -200 mesh, and a gold recovery of 92% is obtained in the cyanidation circuit. With flotation and roasting, the overall gold recovery is increased to 98%.

AMONG electrical manufacturers, interest in the outlook for copper supplies has not diminished despite signs of a healthier market following price decontrol. Reason: Electrical utility industry output is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6 pct for the next 15 years. A more graphic description of the growth ahead is given in the Eighth Quarterly Report of the Director of Defense Mobilization as follows: "Power generating capability, which amounted to 63 million kw at the time of Korea, now stands at more than 81 million. The established goal for installed capability at the end of 1955 is 116 million kw. Orders already on the books of power equipment manufacturers, if fulfilled on schedule, will bring installed capability to over 123 million kw by the end of 1956-and more orders for equipment are yet to come." These statistics portend an impressive requirement for copper, not only for power plants and distribution lines themselves but for the multitude of industry and domestic end-uses.

The magnetic concentration of iron-ores has been so often and so widely studied and discussed among the members of the Institute that any remarks concerning its general importance, from an economic standpoint, would be superfluous; but it is thought that a description of the Ball and Norton ore-separator, designed for cobbing and separating magnetic iron-ores, indicating its essential differences from other machines and the advantages claimed for it, together with some account of recent results obtained in its application to the concentration of such ores, will prove of interest. This machine is the joint invention of Mr. Sheldon Norton, of Hokendauqua, Pa., and the writer, and has been patented in the United States, Canada, and other countries. Of the accompanying illustrations, Pig. 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the perfected ore-separator, adapted for separating fine ore, and Fig. 2 the same, adapted for cobbing ore of the size of stove- or chestnut-coal. The two designs are identical in principle, and vary from each other in minor details only. In a recent paper' I took exception to the opening paragraph of Mr. Hill's paper, in which he says:— " In endeavoring to interpret the geological occurrence of oil, the geologist is confronted by the fact that science has not yet solved the problem of its origin, which lies at the root of the subject.... For the present we must consider oil as a material in the rocks, the origin of which is still unexplained." I take this occasion to repeat my objection to the above statement, as well as to the similar statement of Mr. C. W. Hayes and William Kennedy in their recent bulletin2 on the same oilfields :—" The origin of petroleum is one of the most obscure problems by which geologists are confronted." I do not hesitate to say that these statements, which claim we know so little to-day of the origin of petroleum, are not warranted in the present state of geological science, and that, on the contrary, geology can to-day most clearly prove the origin of oil to be inorganic and the result of solfataric volcanic emanations. It has been so long assumed that oil or bitumen is due to the decomposition of the organic remains of the sedimentary rocks, that the words organic and bituminous are used synonymously and, accordingly, without attempt at explanation, the origin of oil is in every case ascribed to some bituminous-shale horizon, more or less full of organic matter. To obtain a negative determination for prime farmlands in its approved lignite surface mine permit application, Phillips Coal Co. conducted a soils mapping effort and a historic land use survey. In addressing the justification for topsoil substitute materials, the company relied on results of a geochemical evaluation to demonstrate improved drainage, trafficability, and fertility. It also relied on results of field test plots. Post-mining land use was determined through the use of overlay maps considering existing land use, vegetation, and historic prime farmland. The reclamation plan incorporated these elements plus indicator species, existing vegetation, and wildlife needs.

The third special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, in joint session with the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society, in conjunction with the Third National Exposition -of-Chemical Industries, at the Grand Central Palace. The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, and President Colin G. Fink of the American Electrochemical Society, Mr. C. S. Newcomb presented his paper on "Chrome Mining and Concentration."

PRIOR to 1912 the only rail outlets for a large part of the coal regions of Carbon and Emery Counties. Utah, were over single-track lines of the Southern Utah R.R. and Castle Valley Ry. Companies, forming a route extending from Mohrland and Hiawatha, Utah, to a point of connection at Price, Utah, with what is now The Denver and Rio Grande Western R.R. Co. These two tap lines were poorly and inadequately constructed, with impracticable grades, lacking in equipment, and incapable of being put into condition to serve this region and handle the output of the mines, to say nothing of making possible increased production and new development. Any plans for the new development and increased output necessarily involved new and adequate railroad service. It was essential, not only that additional facilities be provided but that these facilities be in the form of an efficient and up-to-date railroad providing an independent through operation from the coal mines to a point of direct connection with the lines over which the product would be distributed to consumers. What is the economic basis for direct, continuous particle size measurement and control? First, precise grinding control is necessary to achieve and maintain a specified recovery and throughput. Second, throughput and recovery are direct functions of particle size-and these two factors control the economic performance of the ore concentration process. Third, only size-based control using a particle size and percent solids monitor (PSM) has achieved the necessary precise control. Recovery, throughput and cost can be accurately measured for various concentrator operating conditions if particle size is closely controlled. From such data the economic results of different particle size grind points can be analyzed. This will reveal the best combination of recovery and throughput to meet objectives established by financial management. Predictable, repeatable response to set-point selection is essential if the projected profitability of the mill is to be reached.

A new mechanism of crystal growth involving oapor, liquid, crnd solid phases explains many observations of the effect of implurities in crystal growth from the vapor. The role of the impuuitq is to form a liquid Solution with the crystalline tnalerial to be grown from the vapor. Since the solution is n prefevred site for deposition firorti the uapor, the liquid becorrles supersaturated. Crystal growth occurs by precipitatzon from the supersaturated liquid crt tlie solid-liquid zntevfnce. A crystalline defect, such as a screw dislocation, is not essetztial for VLS (vapor -liquid-solid) growth. The concept of the VLS mechanism is discussed in detail with reference to tire controlled growth of silicon crystals using gold, platinum, palladium, nickel, silver, or copper as an implurity agent. RECENTLY a short communication' described a new concept of crystal growth from the vapor, the VLS mechanism. In this paper we present a detailed description of the process and its application to the growth of silicon crystals and we discuss its relevance to existing concepts of .'whisker" crystal growth. Crystal growth from the vapor is usually explained by a theory proposed by Frank2 and developed in detail by Burton, Cabrera, and Frank.3 In this theory a screw dislocation terminating at the growth surface provides a self-perpetuating step. Accommodation of atoms at the step is energetically favorable, and is possible of much lower supersatu-ration than required for two-dimensional nucleation. Crystals of a unique form resulting from aniso-tropic growth from the vapor are "whisker" or filamentary ones. Such crystals have a lengthwise dimension orders of magnitude larger than those of the cross section. For most filamentary crystals both the fast-growth direction and directions of lateral growth have small Miller indices. The special growth form for a whisker crystal implies that the tip surface of the crystal must be a preferred growth site. sears4 proposed that, according to the Frank theory. a whisker contains a screw dislocation emergent at the growing tip. Such an axial defect provides a preferred growth site and accounts for unidirectional growth. The hypothesis was extended by Price. Vermilyea. and Webb," still implying the presence of a dislocation at the whisker tip. They postulated that impurities arriving at the fast-growing tip face become buried while those arriving on the surface of slow-growing lateral faces accumulate and thereby hinder growth. These considerations led to a whisker morphology. There is increasing evidence that most whisker crystals grown from the vapor are dislocation-free. Webb and his coworkers6 searched for an Eshelby twist7 in zinc? cadmium, iron. copper, silver, and palladium whisker crystals. They found unequivocal evidence for an axial screw dislocation in only one element, palladium. However, not every palladium crystal examined contained a dislocation. Observations with the electron microscope have failed to show dislocations in whisker crystals of zinc, silicon.9 and one morphology of AlN.10 Since many whiskers are completely free of dislocations, an axial dislocation does not appear to be required for whisker growth of many substances. A significant advance in understanding whisker growth has been a recognition of the need for impurities. This requirement has been clearly demonstrated for copper,11 iron,13 and silicon9-1 whiskers. For silicon, detailed studies proved conclusively that certain impurities, for example, nickel or gold, are essential. Another pertinent phenomenon which has received little attention is the presence of a liquid layer or droplets on the surface of some crystals growing from the vapor. Crystals in which this has been observed include p-toluidine,14 MoO3,15 ferrites,16 and silicon carbide.'" The liquid layers or globules were considered to be metastable phases, molecular complexes, or intermediate polymers originating from condensation of the vapor phase. The possibility has been suggested that the halide being reduced is condensed at the tip18 or adsorbed on the surface11 of a growing metal whisker, for example copper. The literature on whiskers discloses illustrations of rounded terminations at the tips. These appear. for example, on crystals of A12O3,19,20 sic,21 and BeO.22 For BeO, Edwards and Happel suggested that during growth of the whisker the rounded termination consisted of molten beryllium enclosed in a solid shell of BeO. A recent paper9 on the growth of silicon whiskers contains many observations pertinent to an understanding of the mechanisnl of whisker growth. These observations are summarized as follows. 1) Silicon whiskers are dislocation-free. 2) Certain impurities are essential for whisker growth. Without such impurities the silicon deposit is in the form of a film or consists of discrete polyhedral crystals.

H. L. HAMMERSLEY, B. C. Dept. of Mines. I would like to ask Mr. Brawner if the direction that he measured in the boreholes with the camera was referenced to magnetic north? MR. BRAWNER. Yes, it was. However, there is one problem that you may encounter if the ore body is magnetic; the borehole compass will give erroneous results. Three procedures are available to overcome this. The first one involves the use of a gyro compass instead of a magnetic compass. The second technique developed by Christiansen in Salt Lake City, is to orient the core with the use of scribing knives. The third method is to remove the compass needle and place a steel ball in the compass case. The hole must be drilled at a slight angle off the vertical. The location of the steel ball, which will roll to the underside of the hole is photographed. A borehole directional survey is then made, from which the bearing of the steel ball relative to the axis of the compass can be determined. It was stated this morning that there have been some recent developments that give us the ability to drill horizontal drainage holes and install drainage pipes more cheaply than in the past. Would Mr. Brawner tell us some of the new developments and methods of installing these horizontal drain holes? MR. BRAWNER There are two zones in which you may be concerned about installing drains; the first is in the overburden soil, the second is in the rock. Each area requires a different installation method. If the rock is fairly massive and the holes will remain open, the simplest procedure is to use standard air track equipment or a percussion drill. At one of the mines in the Highland Valley, drains up to 300 ft. long have been installed with a percussion drill at a rate of one drain per day. The costs were in the order of $2.30 and $2.40 per foot. If the rock is quite soft, such as in a serpentine, it will be necessary to install a casing in the hole. The least expensive casing that will not deteriorate within the life required should be used. Plastic pipe or black iron pipe are commonly used. MAGNESIUM and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitional point has been set at 225°C by Schmid1 for single crystals, and at 250°°C by Morell and Hanawalt2 for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on polycrystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional temperature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheett over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig r. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Hargreaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Hargreaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors5 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformational loads. These findings have been applied

It is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unexpected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one's interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one's expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one's satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumination in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,' until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid substances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthusiasm of the collector that kept me going.
