NEW place was assigned to the women for their headquarters at the annual meeting of the Auxiliary but they, as usual, occupied a large place in the activities of the annual meeting. The alcove on the Thirty-ninth Street side of the building was a busy place on Monday morning, as the members of the various sections from New York to California greeted each other. The registration was conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Wolfes, Miss Georgene Davis and Mrs. Jennings, while Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Charlton Reynders, and others dispensed tickets to the various functions that had been provided for entertainment. There seemed to be the usual number registered, but when only one member of the District of Columbia Section made herself known everyone wondered why the large delegation of last year had so dwindled. The explanation appeared next day, when a number of others from that Section arrived, telling of a delightful reception on the night before, at the White House. Mrs. Hoover had honored the "Canaries"¬(the organization of Lone Girl Scout' workers) the officers of the Section, and their husbands, who for once became only "so and so's husband." Luncheon was served on the fifth floor on Monday, the hostesses for that day being Mesdames C. F. Ayer, Willis Burns, G. W. Farny, H. G. Moulton, and T. T. Read. THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other's lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.

CERTAINLY in point of attendance, and doubtless in several other ways as well, the 147th meeting of the A.I.M.E. was the best ever held. In times of depression, mining engineers and metallurgists have plenty of time to come to the Annual Meeting but money is scarce; at the height of industrial activity they have plenty of money but no time. "The current period of transition seemed to provide ideal conditions for' both the preparation of papers and attendance at their presentation. The weather made even the Californians present envious though the weather man gets no credit, for rain and snow was what he willed. Among the elevator men, the miners have the reputation of being the toughest crowd to handle, though the best natured, withal, of all the engineering groups that meet in the Engineering Societies Building. (New York Meeting, February, 1913) This old and well-known method of determining, silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its-ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a, description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, acid because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a determination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained.

MODERN advances in practically all lines of industrial development have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, we may trace the introduction and development of canal- and steamboat-navigation; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that furnished by candles and lard-oil; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of mining and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 and 1911. A complete resume would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitation has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals. Though the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more common types. No new investigational data are included, but the deductions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines'. Definition of Types There are three primary types of fuel beds: (I) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown .resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed horizontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

INSPECTION and test methods of great diversity have been used from the most ancient times to select raw material, control its manufacture, and appraise its finished properties and value. The "miller thumb," expert in grading flour, the vintner's sense of taste, the goldsmith's micro-wear test on a touchstone, the enquiring sniff over the doubtful egg -these are all nondestructive inspection methods, accurate and depend- able, but not readily reduced to numbers in the c.g.s. system. A horse trader inspecting a possible purchase is interested in more than age, size, weight, color. heredity, speed, or drawbar pull which can be reduced to figures. Behavior, temperament, stamina, health-past, present and future---are just as important as the numerically determinate constants.

? THE man is always greater than his work.? The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. THE PECULIAR NATURE OF MINERAL WEALTH. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while raining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

JUDGING by the progressive atmosphere prevailing in the nonmetallic mineral industries during the past year, postwar conditions were healthful though inflationary. Demand for most industrial mineral products has been exceptionally high and many new production records were attained. Severe shortages of some commodities existed, especially building materials and fertilizers. Production costs and prices increased and profitable operation was general. Under these conditions expansion programs were the order of the day. Ample funds were available to finance the purchase of good equipment; and, as wages and other operating costs were increasing, primary emphasis was placed on attaining maximum efficiency in new installations. These efforts were hampered by shortages and slow delivery of desirable equipment, so compromises in design were often necessary. However, on the whole, production practice improved.

WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.

Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. STATISTICAL evidence shows that continued efforts made by Government and industry to make mining safer during the last two decades have had most favorable results. In the copper-mining industry an accident frequency of 146 per million man-hours worked in 1925 dropped 71 per cent by 1945 to 43. This downward trend was relatively consistent except for a high period in 1937 which was probably due to a resumption of large-scale operation with many untrained miners. The iron-mining industry showed a similar trend, but at the relatively lower accident frequency of 66, which dropped to 24 in 1945. The close relationship between the steel and iron-mining industries may be one reason for the lower accident frequencies, because the steel industry is noted for its greater recognition of the fact that safe working conditions are an important part of labor-management relations.

As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

The Upper Freeport coal in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles, Pennsylvania, varies from a bony streak to a thick coal deposit often exceeding ninety inches, the "Double" or "Thick Freeport". Distinctive basal partings, a central bone layer, and a canneloid top bench may be present. The appearance of a sandstone roof, sandstone rolls, and bony coal at the top of the main coal bench can be anticipated in thin Freeport areas when basal partings are absent. When the two basal partings are present, a shale roof is normal. These effects are correlated with the original topography upon which the coal was deposited. The original depositional high areas tend to coincide with present structural highs. Preliminary data indicate that coal quality, in part, is affected by the deposi-tional setting. In "high" areas, a tendency exists for the main coal bench to contain higher percentages of fusain and mineral matter. Within limits, some-what higher ash fusion temperatures appear to correlate with paleotopographic highs. As a result of these findings, critical examination of the paleotopography and related sediments is indicated in other areas and other coals. The Upper Freeport coal is quite variable both in thickness and composition in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles of Pennsylvania (Figure 1). The coal horizon in these quadrangles is marked either by a thin carbonaceous shale bed or by a single bed containing a variable number of partings (binders). The complex coal zone known locally as the "Double" or "Thick Freeport" contains the Upper Freeport Coal Bed at the base; but in addition, it has an overlying bone layer and an upper coal bed occasionally capped with a canneloid layer. The "Thick Freeport" often exceeds 90 inches in thickness, whereas the normal Upper Freeport coal usually varies between 34 and 50 inches.
