The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler's own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

INTRODUCTION The Chord property was acquired in 1975 from Roy Chord, an early prospector and miner of the area. He had staked numerous claims on the southern flank of the Black Hills in the early 19501s, and by the late 50’s, many small open pit and underground mines had been or were in operation. By the mid 1960's small tonnages of high-grade oxidized uranium ore had been mined from the property. Starting in 1975, Union Carbide conducted a series of exploration programs to determine the remaining economic potential. The previously mined areas were re-examined in order to define additional oxidized mineralization. Meanwhile, a wide-spaced drilling program was initiated to determine the potential for deeper unoxidized deposits. Through the exploration program of 1979, measured minable reserves in excess of two million pounds of contained uranium had been discovered. GEOLOGY The Edgemont District is located on the southern end of the Black Hills Uplift. A succession of pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous Formations is exposed within the core and across the flanks. The uranium host is the lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara Group which is divided into two formations, the Lakota and Fall River Formations (Figure 1). The basal Lakota Formation rests unconformably on the Jurassic Morrison Formation and consists of fluvial channel sandstones

Much has been written of late regarding the flotation of coal as a means of reclaiming the valuable portion of the fines encountered in nearly all methods of coal preparation. Whether the process be wet or dry, whether the dust be sent through the entire process or removed prior to the cleaning by some such method as screening or aspiration, one of the final products consists of a considerable proportion of — 48-mesh material. The percentage of this —48-mesh material depends upon the mining method, transportation, storage, and method of preparation. The tonnage of this dust material ranges from 1 to 10 per cent of the total output of the cleaning plants. Four methods of disposal are available for this coal: 1. Disposal with the refuse from the plant. 2. Addition, after being reclaimed from the wash water, or dust collectors, without cleaning to the larger sizes. 3. Separate disposal as a pulverized fuel. 4. Cleaning so that addition to the larger sizes benefits the product as a whole. It is also true that flotation in one form or another is the only known way to effectively clean this material. While some processes do a reasonable cleaning job down to and including +l00 mesh, by far the greater majority stop at or short of the + 48-mesh size. Much of the literature on coal flotation passes by the fred pulp density and size by merely stating that the feed varies from 20 to 30 per cent solids and that the size range is from — 1/4 in. or — 1/8 in. to 0. Small wonder then that some operators with entirely different conditions, and not knowing the machine capacity, throw up their hands in despair when flotation is mentioned. Too much parallel is drawn between flotation methods as applied to ores and as applied to coal, to the detriment of the latter. A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring in Florida phosphate rock products. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm), since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum contents of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clay balls. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vrede-fort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well-known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies. South of the line X — Y (see Fig 2 and 5) the gravity anomalies are smaller over the LWW beds and magnetic anomalies suddenly become weaker and even change signs by becoming positive. This peculiar phe- nomenon is explained by faulting which truncated the nearly vertical LWW shales at depth. In this manner the mass of the LWW beds has been reduced together with the weakening of the negative magnetic anomalies by positive poles which occupy the truncated end. Furthermore, by uplifting the beds between f1 and f2 (Fig 2) positive polarization becomes predominant, thus causing positive magnetic anomalies. General The Vredefort dome is one of the internationally known geological structures, which, among others, has attracted the attention of numerous American geologists. It was for this latter reason that our aerial magnetic results over this structure were selected by us for publication in the United States of America. A full description of the exposed geology has been published by Nell and readers are referred to this paper, which is subject to only slight modifications inasmuch as the subdivision of the Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as WW system) is concerned. The Vredefort dome is about 60 miles southwest of Johannesburg. The WW system, after being exposed in the vicinity of Johannesburg, plunges with southerly dips beneath the Vent-ersdorp and Transvaal systems. Along a section southwest from Johannesburg, as shown diagrammatically in Fig 4, we see no outcrops of the WW system until the Vredefort dome, where the Upper and Lower WW system are wrapped around an almost circular arc of a granite mass. Here the whole WW system is overturned around the perimeter of a huge granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. Less than half of the circumference of this dome is exposed; the rest is covered by Karroo dolerites and sediments. The determination of the exact shape of the concealed part of the dome has been a matter of considerable interest and obviously geophysical methods were eminently suited for obtaining this information. A good start was made with a gravimeter survey carried out by the Geological Survey of the Union of South Africa.2 Our own

AT the meeting on Engineering Education on Mon- A day afternoon E. A. Holbrook, of the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the Committee, presided as chairman with W. B. Plank acting as vice- chairman. About sixty members of the educational fraternity were present. Dean Holbrook, after a few introductory remarks, introduced the first speaker of the afternoon, Charles Y. Clayton, who then presented his paper, "Why Do So Few Elect Metallurgy?" in which he stressed the fact that ,one of the things the study of metallurgy ,now needs is publicity and public education on what metallurgy is and 'does. Another thing he brought out is that the study of metallurgy has been looked on for many years merely as a branch of other departments. He gave tables showing past and present enrollment in the course of metallurgy in various schools.

Mine production blasting is a process of destruction of rock masses in order that ore may be extracted. Many open pit operations are faced with the apparently conflicting requirements of providing large quantities of fragmented rock for the processing plant and of minimizing the damage inflicted upon the surrounding pit slopes. A reasonable compromise between these two conflicting demands may often be found by means of simple engineering of production blasts. Many operations tend to rely too heavily upon traditional wall control techniques to alleviate a problem already created by the production blasts. Various production trends including use of larger blastholes and patterns have tended to aggravate the situation. These practices only serve to emphasize the need for engineered improvements. Central to blasting engineering is the process of systematic trial and evaluation. Changes to the blasting system should be made singly, starting with the simplest. This paper discusses simple changes involving drill pattern control, effective use of blastholes and explosives, adequate delaying including use of down-the-hole sequential techniques, effective utilization of free faces, and avoidance of "choked" situations. By directing explosive effort where it is needed, such changes generally result in a significant improvement of slope conditions and of production blasting cost and performance.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and operation of open pits. The selection of slope angles is a critical decision that can have far-reaching effects on the accumulated cash flow and the overall profitability of a mining project. Slope failures can now be dealt with in a number of ways. Two methods - the total removal and the partial unloading of a failing zone-have been practiced for many years. However, with the refinement of monitoring techniques, open pits can now learn to live with a slide and even turn a potential loss into a gain. There are various techniques, such as presplit blasting, drainage systems, and artificial stabilization, which can be applied immediately in an existing open pit to improve the stability of the pit slopes. The technology of slope stability will play an important part in the future mining of low grade, previously marginal orebodies, which will have to be exploited if the mineral needs of the world are to be met.

Isobaric sections of the eutectoid region of the iron-carbon phase diagram have been exgerimentally determined at 35, 50, and 65 kb. The phase boundaries were located by metallographic analysis of specimens quenched after equilibriatwn at known temperatures and pressures. With increasing pres -sure a pronounced decrease in the solubility of FesC in austenite was observed together with a depression of the eutectoid temperature. These two effects resulted in a shift of the eutectoid composition toward a lower carbon content; at 65 kb the eutectoid was at less than 0.2 wt pct C. These results are in qualitative agreement with thermodynamic calculations. It has also been shown by calculations that Fe3C in contact with saturated austenite will be stable with respect to both graphite and diamond formation at all pressures above -3.5 kb. 1 HE investigation described in this article was part of a more general study of the effect of high pressure on transformations in Fe-C alloys. Thermodynamic calculations and exploratory runs made in 1959 at the start of the program indicated an appreciable change with pressure in the phase equilibria of Fe-C alloys. However, the calculations were not considered reliable enought to provide the quantitative information required for the interpretation of the effect of pressure on the kinetics of transformations. An experimental investigation was therefore made to determine a series of isobaric sections of the eutectoid region of the phase diagram at pressures up to 65 kb. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. Seven alloys with analyzed carbon contents of 0.10, 0.20, 0.38, 0.60, 0.77, 0.93, and 1.20 wt pct C were prepared from Ferrovac" iron and high-purity graphite induction melted in magnesia crucibles under argon. The ingots were hot worked and swaged down to 0.19-in.-diam rod which was then centerless ground to a final diameter of 0.125 in. Samples for chemical and spectrographic analyses were taken from each end of the rods. The prin- cipal impurities were found to be Ni, Al, Co, and Si which were present in amounts up to 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, and 0.01 wt pct, respectively. Specimens were prepared by slicing the ground rods into pills 0.06-in. thick which were silver plated to reduce decarburization during the equilibration. Silver was chosen for this purpose because of its very low solubility for carbon and its mutual immisicibility with iron. High-Pressure Apparatus. The high-pressure runs were carried out in the "Belt" apparatus.' As shown in Fig. 1, this consisted of a cylindrical cell compressed between two Carboloy punches loaded by a uniaxle press. Radial support to the cell was given by the "belt" which was a Carboloy die heavily prestressed by a series of steel binding rings. Laminated gaskets of lava and metal separated the punches from the inner surface of the "belt". A cross-section of the high-pressure cell is shown in Fig. 2. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I have seen this installation and I wish all those interested in the question of electricity as a mine pumping agent could see it. It is not only a model for mine installation, but might well serve as a model for any electrically driven pumping plant. I think I am correct in saying that the pumps are the largest electrically operated centrifugal pumps in mine service in America. I talked with Mr. Rumsey in Duluth just before coming here, and he told me that the actual tests of the equipment as installed checked very closely with the shop tests; that the water delivered by the pumps was slightly in excess of the guarantee, something like 3 or 4 per cent., and that no troubles except of a very minor nature had been experienced with the installation from the start. One point which has been brought out by Mr. Rumsey, and by others who have looked into this question, is the marked saving which' can be made by the application of electricity to pumps, especially to the main sump pumps. The pumps are always located a long distance from the boiler plant and the losses in the steam mains are large. While many of the steam pumps are of a very high grade, yet the tests seemed to indicate that the steam consumption is extremely large. The reduction in operating cost of one small installation which I. have in mind pumping against a head of approximately 2,000 ft.-which by the way was a reciprocating pump-reduced the pumping cost to the neighborhood of one-fifth of the previous steam cost. . The high steam cost was probably due to leakage in the engine and the loss in transmission in the mine, the pumps being located almost half a, mile from the boiler plant.

The solubility of oxygen in a iron has been determined in the range between 700° and 900°C. The solubility is a function of temperature and varies from about 0.008 pct oxygen at 700°C to atureandabout 0.03 pct at 900°C. The heat of solution is approximately +15,500 cal per mol. AS pointed out in a recent paper by Kitchener et al.,1 there has been a lack of agreement among many investigators even as to the order of magnitude of the solid solubility of oxygen in the various forms of iron. This lack of agreement is attributable in large part to the difficulties in the determination of a small oxygen solubility; but because the problem has remained so long unsettled, it also indicates a lack of interest which is rather surprising when the demonstrated importance of small amounts of soluble nonmetallic impurities in iron is considered. The work of Kitchener et al. apparently leaves the solubility of oxygen in iron in a satisfactory state, but no attempt was made to investigate the solubility in a iron. The solubility of oxygen in a iron is actually of greater interest, since it is in this form that iron and mild steels are employed ordinarily. That the effect of oxygen in iron is of more than theoretical interest has been well established by Fast,' and more recently by Rees and Hopkins," who demonstrated that oxygen in the range between 0.0008 and 0.27 wt pct has a pronounced effect upon the mechanical properties. Previous Work and Methods Used To report in detail the literature relating to the solubility of oxygen in a iron would require an inordinate amount of space. For those interested in reviewing this work, a bibliography4-13 of the more significant papers is appended. In general, two methods of studying this problem have been used. One is the gas-metal equilibrium method where the H2O-H2-Fe or the CO2-CO-Fe equilibria have been used. The other is the more direct approach of the oxidation of thin strips of pure iron by packing in mill scale or by air or gaseous oxygen at some desired temperature. In this method oxygen is allowed to oxidize the surface and then to diffuse inward until saturation is obtained. In the gas-metal equilibrium method the oxygen dissolved in solid iron at a given temperature is proportional to the ratio of the water vapor-hydrogen pressures or the CO2-CO pressures over the sample for small ratio values. If the ratio becomes higher than a critical value, then an oxide phase makes its appearance (the solution becomes supersaturated). In principle, it is possible to use a series of H2O/H2 or CO2/CO ratios and to find by analysis the corresponding amounts of oxygen in solid solution at constant temperature. At the point where a very small increase in the gas ratio (increase in oxidizing powder) produces a large increase in oxygen content, the solid solubility limit is reached. Alternately, if the critical ratio is known, it is possible to use the procedure of Kitchener et al.1 and to use a ratio which is near but below the critical one. The solubility corresponding to this lower ratio will not be the saturation solubility at the temperature employed, but the saturation solubility can be calculated by multiplying the measured solubility by the critical ratio over the ratio used. However, in the case where oxygen gas is the oxidizing medium, the saturation solubility is not a function of pressure, providing the pressure exceeds the dissociation pressure of FeO in equilibrium with iron. This is 1.2x10-16 mm at 800 °C, according to Dushman." As pointed out by Darken17 in discussing the FeO phase diagram, most of the possible errors tend to yield high values of oxygen solubility. For example, one circumstance which evidently caused the reporting of many high values was the use of finely divided or powdered iron in the gas equilibrium method. Because of the large surface area of such a sample, and the likelihood of some surface contamination if only by exposure to air, the results tended to be high. The direct oxidation method which was used in this work has the advantage in that it is simple and direct, but it suffers from one disadvantage: equilibrium can only be approached from the low oxygen side. The brittle fracture of a Tic-lnconel cermet at room temperature is shown to occur primarily as a result of the cracking of the larger carbide particles (at a tensile strain of approximately 0.3 pct), followed by cracking of adjacent, smaller carbides and, finally, by the rupture of the lnconel matrix between cracked carbides (at a strain of-1.2 pct). No evidence was found for separation at the interface between carbide and matrix at any point in the fracture process. MATERIAL used in this study was a Tic-Inconel cermet prepared by infiltration (50 pct Tic, 50 pct Inconel: designated as TC66-I). A thin section of this material was brazed to a piece of low carbon steel and then mounted in lucite for metal-lographic preparation." INTERNAL oxidation occurs readily in silver due to the rapid diffusion of oxygen in silver.' It has a marked effect on creep in polycrystalline silver2 and raises the critical resolved shear stress in single crystals of silver.3 However, the effect of oxygen on the work-hardening parameters of silver is not known. It is the aim of this paper to describe the effect of internal oxidation on the work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of silver and an Ag-0.1 at. pct A1 alloy. The materials used were: 99.99 pct Ag from Handy and Harman and 99.993+ pct A1 from Alcoa. Single crystals, 6 mm by 6 mm in cross section of silver and Ag-0.1 at. pct A1 of mo.5 orientation, i.e., the orientation with the Schmidt factor m = 0.5. were grown by the Chalmers technique.4 One set of specimens, referred to herein as oxidized specimens, was annealed at 940°C for 24 hr in a muffle furnace, in air, and furnace-cooled to room temperature. Another set of specimens, referred to as nonoxidized specimens, was annealed in oxygen-free helium at 940°C for 24 hr and furnace-cooled over a period of 7 hr to room temperature. The annealed single crystals were tested at room temperature in a floor-model Instron testing machine. The results are presented in Figs. 1 and 2. A

An equilibrium study was made of the distribution of chromium and oxygen between liquid iron, containing less than 1 pct Cr, and simple slags of the CaO(MgO)-Si02-FeO-Cr& type in the temperature range 1526' to 1734OC. The effects of slag oxidation, temperature, and basicity were observed. IN spite of the fact that chromium is one of the most important alloying elements in steel, and exists in almost all steels as a significant residual element, little research has been done to determine its behavior in basic steelmaking processes. Considerably more work has been done under silica-saturated acid slag conditions. Korber and Oelsen,' Herasymenko,' and others have generally agreed that in acid steelmaking practice the chromium in the slag behaved as if it were present as the chrom-ous ion (CrO). Work by Hilty- ir, high chromium slags also indicated that chromium may exist as CrO. In basic slag systems no equilibrium data exist. Based on individual studies of basic open hearth and electric furnace practice, Bardenheuer," Rock-rohr,% nd HauckQ oncluded that: 1—chromium recovery increased with decreasing basicity, and 2— chromium recovery increased with increasing temperature, although the effect was small. In similar studies Yavioskii and Dzemyen' concluded that: 1— slag FeO is the most important variable, 2—the basicity of the slag has no effect on chromium recovery, and 3—slag viscosity is not high even when 20 pct Cr,O, is present. Lapitskii\ oncluded that chromium recovery improved as the basicity of the slag decreased and increased with increasing manganese in the metal. Regarding the effectiveness of CrZ08 as a base or acid in basic slags, both Kristofferseno and Trojer" reported that Cr,08 was an acidic component requiring neutralization as 2CaO-Cr,O,. Experimental Procedure The experimental apparatus and procedure used for the present research were similar in most details to those used by Winkler and Chipman" and were described in detail by them. A magnesia crucible was used, holding 60 to 80 lb of Armco iron which was decarburized with hydrogen to about 0.010 pct C. Since all the metal samples solidified without gas evolution, this carbon level was assumed not to be significant. Synthetic slags made by mixing pure oxides were used throughout the study. Temperatures were measured by means of calibrated W-Mo thermocouples and were checked by Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouples. The range of temperatures covered in this study was from 1526" to 1734°C. The chromium content of the iron was in the range 0.032 to 0.82 pct, although the bulk of the tests showed 0.04 to 0.2 pct. The slags were of the CaO(MgO)-SiO,-FeO-Cr,O, type in which the Cr,O, content was from about 2 to 20 pct, although most of the slags showed from about 2 to 10 pct. The FeO range was from about 10 to 65 pct. CaO and SiO, were in the range of about 5 to 45 pct each, yielding a rather wide range of basicity values. The first 12 heats were made without a sulphur addition, and with only 30 min allowed for slag-metal equilibrium to be reached. In previous research it had been shown that less than 30 min was adequate to achieve equilibrium in slags free of Cr2O8.11,14.15 A study of the present data indicated that some of the tests may not have reached equilibrium in this time; accordingly four additional heats were made in which at least 1 hr was permitted for equilibrium to be reached.
