A flotation plant was placed in operation in 1945 at the Tamaqua colliery of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc., to recover fine anthracite which is discharged from the cleaning plant with the washery water.‡ In addition to the recovery plant, facilities were provided for the complete clarification of the washery water, recirculation of this clarified water for breaker use, and disposal of the refuse solids in a waste impounding dam. Fig I shows a view of the settling tanks and the flotation plant. Flow Diagram The flow diagram for the complete recovery project is given in Fig 2. All the waste water from the cleaning plant is collected in a sump A outside the breaker structure, from which a 7000 gpm pump B delivers it through a 16 in. line to a 75-ft diam hydroseparator C. The hydroseparator, acting as a classifier, is set to give a separation at approximately 200-mesh. The minus 200-mesh overflow is discharged by gravity into the 180-ft thickener D for final settling of the solids. The classifier underflow sludge is pumped to the flotation plant by a 6-in. quadruplex diaphragm pump E. A 10-ft diam hydroseparator F is used to make a second classification on the sludge solids at approximately 28-mesh. The underflow from this classifier containing the coarse particles is elevated by a 6-in. diaphragm pump G and is discharged on two 4- by 6-ft vibrating screens II. These screens are dressed with approximately 28-mesh cloth. Screen oversize product flows directly to the centrifuge that dewaters the cleaned froth. The screen underflow and the overflow from the 10-ft classifier flow to the flotation circuit. The flotation feed is conditioned in a 12 by 12-ft agitator tank J at a pulp density of I:2.33 (30 pct solids). Reagents are fed to the circuit by reagent feeder I. The conditioned pulp is then diluted to a pulp density of approximately I: 5 (18 pct solids) and is fed to two banks of four 100-cu ft froth flotation cells K for primary coal recovery and cleaning. Additional reagents from reagent distributor L are added to the feed weir-box of Nos. 2, 3, and 4 cells of each bank of flotation machines. Clean coal removed from these cells flows directly to the clean-coal sump. Dilute tailings from the primary cells is re-thickened in a 30-ft diam thickener M and is then retreated in a scavenger circuit for final recovery of coal. The scavenger circuit consists of a 6- by 6-ft agitator tank N and two banks of four 24-cu ft froth flotation cells 0. Coal froth from these cells flows to the dewatering equipment and the tailings flows to a vertical refuse pump which delivers it to the 180-ft diam waste thickener D. Dewatering of the coal products is accomplished in a 54- by 72-in Bird centrifugal filter P. The cake product is dropped onto a conveyor and is loaded

The 1947 output, which represented about one-sixth of the national total for that year, was approximately equal to production from Vermont, and was second in value to that from New York. New York has an annual output of about 130,000 tons. Three factors have been mainly responsible for the expansion of talc production in California. Smaller amounts are used as insecticide carriers, and in cosmetics, and various minor industrial applications. During World War I1 the principal steatite deposits were studied in detail by members of the U. S. Geological Survey; other sources of commercial talc in the state have in the past received but scant geologic attention. The following discussion is essentially a preliminary report based on research currently in progress by the California Division of Mines, and includes a brief outline of previous steatite studies by the U. S. Geological Survey. Distribution of California Talc Deposits: The principal talc resources of both California and Nevada are confined to an elongate belt that extends from the vicinity of Baker, in north-central San Bernardino County, northwestward to include the southern Death Valley region, the Inyo Range, and the Palmetto-Oasis district of western Nevada (fig. 2). This belt, of which all but the northernmost tip lies in California, is approximately 200 miles long and 30 miles in average width. Included in the belt are four contrasting areas. The deposits within each area are geologically similar and yield talcs that have characteristic properties and applications. Three of these local "talc provinces" lie within California's portion of the talc-

THE mechanical properties of an alloy under given test conditions are in the main determined by the grain size and the phases present, their distribution and temperature-time dependence. Alloys intended for use at elevated temperatures, especially multiphase alloys depending upon precipitation reactions for strengthening, are particularly susceptible to changes in the phases present. Unfortunately, for modern superalloys, very little published information exists which relates the mechanical properties to the basic structural variables. The present work is an effort to do this for an alloy widely used in aircraft gas turbines and related applications, Udimet 500.* The mechanical properties inves- two heats is within the normal specifications for the alloy. However, the elements which most strongly influence the phase reactions, C, Ti, Al, and Mo, are comparable in the two heats. There was no intentional addition of boron, but normal pickup is about 0.002 pct. The vacuum-melted material was received in the form of centerless ground wrought bar stock % in. diam. PHASE STUDIES A) Methods—Two methods were used to determine the phases present: X-ray diffraction measurements on electrolytically digested residues, and microscopic examination. No single commonly used electrolyte will reveal all the phases that may be present; therefore, two complementary acids were selected: HCl and H3PO4. The necessity for this will be shown below in the results. The acid concentrations used were 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3 PO4 in water. The current density was maintained below 0.1 amp per sq in. Residues were rinsed and separated by centrifuga-tion. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained in a 114 mm Debye-Scherrer type camera using cobalt radiation. A temperature of 2250°F was selected to obtain as complete solutioning of phases as possible without encountering incipient melting. Specimens were

Beads of metal frequently appear at the ends of cast-copper wire bars and on the sides of wedge cakes near the top. These are richer in cuprous-oxide than the rest of the casting. A micrographical study of these exudations has been made. It is suggested that the material is forced through the surface while the copper is solidifying. If not eliminated in process of manufacture, it shows on the finished polished sheet copper in patches differing in color from the main body of the sheet. FIGURES 1 to 4 show the copper exudations, at different magnifications, as they appear on the ends of cast wire bars, and on the sides, usually near the top, of wedge cakes. Sometimes the exudations are in fine "drops;" at other times, large masses of the material are found. Microscopic examination of the copper exudation indicates that it is high in oxide and of eutectic proportions. Because of the difficulty of securing a suitable sample, the protuberances have not been analyzed chemically; but the spectroscope shows no indication that there are any more metallic impurities present than in the balance of the copper. The lowest copper plus silver content of the coppers studied for this? paper was 99.914 per cent.; the highest, 99.966 per cent.; so the oxygen content of the whole casting would be well under 0.07 per cent.

MICROSCOPIC. rnetallography has been exploited quite well enough to bring about a very general understanding that the typical metal or alloy is composed of minute crystalline particles blended into a coherent microstructural mosaic. One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of 'particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atoms or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientations and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In order to throw some light on this interesting subject, a series of experiments were made with strips of mild steel, containing about 0.14 per cent. of C and 0.22 per cent. of Ma. These strips were thoroughly cleaned and brightened before use, salts were added to distilled water until it corresponded as nearly as possible to the analysis given by Mr. Lee, and in this water at different temperatures were placed four strips of steel; while four other strips, at corresponding temperatures, were placed in the water used at the Washoe Reduction Works. The latter plant has had no trouble from corrosion of furnace-jackets, pipe-lines or boilers. The analysis of the water used at the Washoe works is: Grains er U. S. Gallon. CaCO3........... 2.92 CaSO3........... 0.76 MgCI3........... 0.64 MgCO3........... 0.58 A1203........... 0.12 Fe2O3........... 0.12 SiO2........... 0.58 NaCl........... 0.35 Organic matter, etc.,........ 1.16 7.23 This water is neutral to litmus; while the artificial Copper Queen water was very slightly alkaline, which Mr. Lee informs us is also true of the water at Douglas. Both waters mere well aerated by pouring from beaker to beaker, and by blowing in air from the experimenter's lungs. The results of these tests, given in Table I., show that there is no significant difference between the effects of the two waters.

A formulation is given for describing the rate of expansion of spherical bubbles rising in liquids the freeboard of which is evacuated. The computer solution of the resultant differential equations has shown that, for low freeboard pressures (less than about 5 mm Hg), on approaching the free surface the bubbles expand much less rapidly than predictable from equilibrium considerations. In other words, in this region the pressure inside the bubbles will be significantly larger than the static pressure in the liquid corresponding to the position of the bubble. These theoretical predictions were confirmed by experimental work, using two-dimensional air bubbles rising in mercury. The important consequence of these findings is that the expansion of gas bubbles in vacuum degassing operations will be a great deal less than expected from hydrostatic considerations. This would lead to a significant reduction in the available interfacial area and may explain the apparent poor efficiency of many vacuum degassing units. VACUUM degassing as a treatment for liquid steel has gained widespread popularity in recent years; the number of known installations exceeds several hundred at the present time.' Although much information is available on both the thermodynamics of the system and the overall performance of various industrial units, much less is known about the fundamental aspects of the process kinetics.2-4 The basic physical situation common to virtually all vacuum degassing operations is the interaction between gas bubbles (swarms of bubbles) and the surrounding molten metal, held in a container, the freeborad of which is at a low absolute pressure. Once formed (or introduced from an external source) the bubbles will ascend, due to the buoyancy forces, and, during this ascent, a significant increase in their volume will occur. This progressive increase in the bubble volume is due to two factors: a) the continuous reduction in the static pressure acting on the bubble during its rise; and b) mass transfer into the bubble from the surrounding molten steel. In a recent paper Richardson and Bradshaw developed equations5 for describing mass transfer into gas bubbles from molten metals at reduced pressures. However, in deriving these expressions it was assumed that the pressure inside the bubble was identical to the static pressure in the adjacent liquid. In other words, the volume of the bubble was considered to be in equilibrium with the pressure of the fluid adjacent to it. This assumption, thus their analysis presented, was thought to be reasonably accurate for most of the bubble's ascent; however, it was unlikely to be valid in the immediate vicinity of the free surface, held at a low pressure. It was pointed out in the discussion6 that the region close to the surface may be of considerable importance as both the driving force and the interfacial area available for mass transfer are at their highest value here. The ' 'anomalous" behavior of gas bubbles when approaching a free surface at low pressures was recently confirmed in a preliminary investigation by Szekely and Martins. ?1 Here high-speed motion photography was used to study air bubbles rising in a column of n-tetradecane with a freeboard pressure of 0.1 mm Hg. It was found that significant distortion of the bubbles occurred on approaching the free surface; furthermore, the expansion observed was much less than what one could expect from hydrostatic considerations, i.e., factor a previously discussed. It follows from the foregoing that a detailed study of these phenomena would be justified both from fundamental considerations and because of their potential relevance to technology. The purpose of the paper is to present a more realistic formulation for the expansion of a gas bubble approaching a low-pressure region, together with a comparison of the theoretical prediction with experimental measurement. An inert bubble will be considered in the first instance; it is thought that the understanding of the fluid mechanics is an essential first step toward the realistic formulation of the mass transfer process. This latter problem will be the subject of a subsequent publication. FORMULATION The Physical Model. Consider a spherical bubble, of initial radius Ro, rising in a fluid, having a density pL. Initially let the bubble be at a distance H from the free surface, and at a pressure Pgo, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Morphological and electrical properties of GaAs epitaxial layers are influenced not only by changes in the nominal substrate orientation but also by small amounts of misorientation from the exact crystal planes. Deviations up to 5 deg from {11IA}, {11IB}, and (100) planes were investigated. Growth rates increase progressively with angle, approximately I u per hr per deg. Size and density of growth pyramids fall off with increasing angle, but other effects that are deleterious to the surface may occur which are heightened by increased misorientation. Carrier concentration decreases and electron mobility consequently increases as the angular offset increases, except in the case of strong compensation, where the mobility trend is reversed. It has long been known that changes in the crystallo-graphic orientation of the substrate may cause pronounced effects on the morphological properties of vapor grown semiconductor films. Reports of orienta-tion-dependent growth rates and surface characteristics are as old as the literature on epitaxy itself. shawl has recently published a comprehensive study of the dependence of growth rate on substrate temperature and orientation in epitaxial GaAs. It is also well-known that misorienting the substrate surface a few degrees away from the nominal low-index crystal-lographic plane often produces a much smoother epitaxial surface. This was reported by Tung2 for silicon, Reisman and Berkenblit3 for germanium, and by Kontrimas and Blakeslee4 for GaAs, and use is commonly made of this fact in the semiconductor industry to help guarantee smooth vapor deposits. The effects of substrate orientation on the carrier concentration and mobility of vapor grown GaAs were first documented by williams5 in 1964 and have been observed by several other authors since then,6,7 but no one has yet reported a careful study of how small changes influence these properties. We have made such a study and have found that sizable differences in growth rate, morphology, carrier concentration, and mobility can indeed be observed for epitaxial films grown on substrates that are oriented by progressive small increments away from the exact crystal plane. EXPERIMENTAL Early in the investigation an arsine synthesis system of conventional design8 was employed to produce growths on {111A}-oriented GaAs substrate crystals. In that early work, pronounced effects on carrier concentration and electron mobility were observed as a function of slight misorientation from this low index plane. That observation led to the more careful study that is reported here. An AsC13 system, differing in major aspect from those commonly in use today9 only in that the reactor is vertical rather than horizontal, was used for the detailed study. The gallium source was at 900°C and the substrates were at 750°C. The flow rate of pal-ladium-diffused H2 through the AsCl3 bubbler was 200 cu cm per min, and the flow rate of bypass H2 was also 200 cu cm per min. The substrates consisted of chro-mium-doped semiinsulating GaAs to facilitate elec-trical evaluation of the overgrowth by means of Hall and conductivity measurements on conventional eight-legged Hall bridges. They were misoriented by 0 to 5 deg from the {111A}, {111B}, and (100) planes, toward the (100) from the {111A} and {111B} and randomly toward the <111A> or <111B> from the {loo). The crystals were oriented for sawing by the Laue back-re-flection technique, which is good only to about ±1/2 deg; but after polishing or sometimes after epitaxial growth the wafers were checked by a diffractometer technique which is accurate to about * 0.1 deg. After lapping, the wafers were polished with NaOCl after the technique of Reisman and Rohr,10 and just before use they were cleaned in NaOC1, thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized water, and blown dry with nitrogen. Each run employed four wafers, each misoriented by differing amounts from one of the three major faces, and at least two runs were made for each orientation. The runs were continued long enough to provide at least a 15-µ or thicker layer. SURFACE MORPHOLOGY The appearance of all the films that were grown in a given run always changed from wafer to wafer as a function of increasing misorientation, but not always in the same regular fashion. It has been demonstrated that considerable bend ductility exists in bulk specimens of polycrystalline high-purity silicon. The possibility of hot-forming at 1200°C is suggested. EXCELLENT corrosion resistance in many media and low cross section for absorption of thermal neutrons (0.13 barn) would make silicon of interest to nuclear engineers were it not for extreme brittle-ness and the difficulty of fabrication by any reasonable means. The use of silicon for structural purposes also has been considered in view of its light weight and oxidation resistance. Johnson and Han-sen&apos; have investigated the properties of silicon-base alloys and concluded that there was no way of making pure silicon or silicon-rich alloys ductile at room temperature. In view of reports of appreciable ductility in germanium single crystals above 550°C&apos;." and some plastic deformation in single-crystal silicon above 900oC,&apos; the present investigation was undertaken to define more precisely the limits of high-temperature ductility in pure silicon. After this investigation was begun torsion ductility in both germanium and silicon was reported by Greiner." Through the courtesy of F. H. Horn, a small bar of cast extra high-purity silicon was obtained and small bend specimens were made from it by careful machining and grinding. All of the reported tests results were obtained from samples from this bar (bar No. 1) and one other of similar source (bar No. 2). No complete analysis was obtained but, based on analysis of similar semi-conductor grade material, metallic impurities were under 0.01 pct total. Vacuum-fusion analysis for oxygen showed a value of 0.0018 2 0.0003 pct for the first bar tested and metallographic analysis showed no evidence of a second phase. Bend tests were carried out on an Instron tensile machine using a bend fixture with a 1 -in. span loaded at the center. Supporting and loading bars were 0.250 in. round and the load was applied by downward motion of the pulling crosshead of the machine. Specimen thickness and width were approximately 0.10 in. and % in. respectively. Loading rate was controlled by holding crosshead motion constant at 0.02 ipm. In some cases a smaller specimen was used on a 5/8-in. span with a 0.129-in.-diam loading bar. The entire bend fixture was surrounded by a hinged furnace and all heating was done in air atmosphere. Temperature measurement was made with thermocouples fastened directly to the bend fixture within less than 1 in. from the specimen. Autographic stress-strain curves were recorded during each test, and breaking load, total deflection, and plastic strain could be obtained from these curves. Stress was calculated from the beam formula S = 3PL/2bh2, where P is the load in pounds, L the span in inches, b the specimen width in inches, and h the specimen thickness in inches. This formula is strictly correct only in the elastic range but has been used to calculate a nominal stress for convenience in the plastic range. The stress given is the maximum stress in the specimen. Results The results of the complete series of tests are shown in Table I. The first group of tests (specimens Nos. 1-6) showed the beginning of plastic flow at a test temperature of 900°C, so two additional tests (Nos. 8 and 9) were made at 950°C on small-size specimens from bar No. 2. Specimen No. 8 was tested in the as-machined condition, and No. 9 was heat-treated in hydrogen at 1300°C for 2 hr, cooled to 1200°C and held 1 hr, cooled to 1000°C and held 1 hr, cooled to 900°C and held 1 hr, and finally cooled to a low temperature before removal from the hydrogen. It is apparent that the heat-treatment had a significant effect on yield strength and ductility. In addition, the magnitude of the yield point was conslderably reduced in the heat-treated specimen as is shown m Fig. 1 by tracings of the stress-strain curves. After obtaining a furnace capable of reaching higher temperatures specimens Nos. 10 to 13 were tested at 1100 and 1200°C. Strain rate was increased by up to a factor of 10 to see whether the ductility observed was excessively strain sensitive. Specimen NO. 10, strained at 0.02 ipm and 1100oC, was still bending at a deflection of 0.322 in. when the load rate was increased to 0.2 ipm, resulting in immediate

H. H. Kellogg—There is one point that the author has failed to emphasize sufficiently in his paper. What is commonly called the equilibrium contact-angle (the author&apos;s "maximum contact-angle") can have only one value on a smooth, flat, homogeneous surface under a given set of conditions. The equilibrium contact-angle is defined, for such a system, as the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author&apos;s reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer&apos;s understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author&apos;s bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan&apos;s motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles. In the agitation froth process, according to Taggart, air is precipitated from the water selectively on to the collector-coated particles and these

InveStIgations into the possibilities of economically mining and concentrating low-grade iron ores of the Lake Superior region are attracting increasing attention. Among the organizations that are carrying on the work are the United States Bureau of Mines, the State of Minnesota (which spends about $80,000 annually on problems of the iron and ferroalloy ores of Minnesota), and the State of Michigan (which spends about $10,000 annually of its iron-ore research). Several of the mining companies are also financing research. Of the states in the Lake Superior district, Minnesota has done most in iron-ore concentration. In 1930, thirty-seven concentrating plants were in operation on the Mesabi Range, beneficiating about one-third of the total ore shipped. About one-half of these plants reduced silica; the others reduced moisture or improved the structure of the ore.&apos; Research into the possibilities of magnetic concentration of the Eastern Mesabi magnetite ores indicates that vast tonnages of that ore may be utilized at a profit in the not distant future. Magnetic concentration has also been tried at Sellwood, Ontario, on the Moose Mountain deposit, and at the Berkshire mine in Wisconsin on the magnetic ores of the Western Gogebic Range. There have been few attempts to concentrate Michigan iron ores. In order to determine the possibilities of such concentration, iron-ore research has been carried on at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology for the past few years. After a general survey of the iron ores of the state, a program of more detailed experimentation was outlined, starting with work on the Ironwood formation of the Gogebic Range. The results of this research led to the belief that gravity methods will produce fairly satisfactory concentrates from the parts of the iron formation that are made up of comparatively thick alternating beds of rather high-grade ore and lean chert. About 85 per cent of the iron and steel produced in the United States comes from ores of the Lake Superior district. The reserves of direct

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publi-cations of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photo-graphs are used on such scales as soon to 1/5,000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are inter-preted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.
