Its production ham increased amt will continue to increase, in comparison with its pre-war position further than that of any of lie other important critical metals except magnesium. Compared with the 1939 production of tons of primary ingot coming from four plants, all owned by the Aluminum Company of America the 1942 figures are more than three timer as large. Including, recoverable scrap and contracted ingot from Canada the 191,, supply of aluminum for the United States will be over siren times dial of 1939- A substantial part of this increase has been achieved during the past year as total production in 1941 was only some 307,500 tons. During 1942 six great new ingot plants sponsored and owned by the Government have come into production and three others are nearing completion.

THE accompanying chart was devised to provide a rapid and simple method of correcting for temperature and compressibility (deviation from Boyle's law) of gas under relatively high pressures and temperatures, such as are encountered in many deep reservoirs. The chart was prepared by interpolating for the desired values in the experimental data of Burke and Keyes1 and Kvalnes and Gaddy2 on the compressibility of methane, after adjusting their results from 0°C. to 60°F. and combining the correction factors for compressibility and temperature into a single multiplier, which, applied to the product of pressure and reservoir volume, gives at once the volume at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs.) and 60°F. The relationship 0f this multiplier to the compressibility factor Z, as used in most discussions, is simply: [Multiplier = 460° + 60°ZT –] where Z is the compressibility factor and T the absolute temperature (Rankine). Fahrenheit temperatures are shown on the vertical axis and pressures in pounds per square inch absolute on the horizontal axis. Correction factors or multipliers at intervals of 0.05 from 0.55 to 1.40 have been plotted on the chart and are calculated t0 give volume of gas at one atmosphere pressure (14.7 lb.) and 60°F. The operation is as follows: The reservoir volume, times the number of atmospheres pressure, times the multiplier, gives the volume of gas measured at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and 60°F. For example, a reservoir is estimated to have a volume of 10,000,000 cu. ft., bottom-hole pressure is 2940 lb. per sq. in. and temperature is 184°F To make the correction for methane, follow the 184° line horizontally to the 2940-lb. pressure line. The intersection lies between the 0.85 and 0.90 correction lines, and by interpolation we may estimate the multiplier at 0.863. The computation is simply: [ ] Using the chart for methane prepared by Prof. G. G. Brown3 and his associates, the multiplier is found to be 0.867. COMMENCEMENT exercises this year have a peculiar significance because the graduating students are entering upon their life's work at the most critical time in the history of the United States. We are engaged in a great struggle the outcome of which is none too clear even to the best informed students of international affairs. We are starting late in a vicious world conflict where it is generally recognized that our adversaries have distinct superiority over us in armament on the land, on the sea, and in the air. We have the gigantic task of building up our armed forces and armament and at the same time supplying our allies with equipment which they must have. We can do this job if we are given sufficient time, but there is a possibility that the war will be over before we are ready. Few realize the seriousness of this situation. If this fight is to be won-and we dare not try to visualize the future of this country if it is lost-all dissension and bickering between Congress, capital, labor, and agriculture must cease. When and where voluntary co-operation proves inadequate for the successful conduct of the war effort, laws must be enacted or strengthened to achieve our purpose.

The isothermul section of the Nb-Ti-Zr-O system at 1500°C was investigated using X-ray dzffraction and metallographic techniques. UP to 66.7 at. pct 0, the system contains nine four-phase regions. Tsopleths at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 55 at. pct 0 weye constructed. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the general shape of the quaternary equilibrium phase diagram of niobium, titanium, zirconium, and oxygen at 1500°C. The system was truncated at 66.7 at. pct. O., PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The Ti-Zr-O system was investigated in this laboratory.' The binary systems of interest have been compiled and discussed by anssen2 and Levin, McMurdie, and Ha11. Elliott4 has determined the Nb-O system by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. He shows the existence of three oxides, namely NbO, NbO2, and Nb2O5. At 1500°C the solubility of oxygen in niobium is about 4 at. pct. No solid solubility region is shown for either NbO or NbO2. EQUIPMENT The same equipment as that for the study of the Ti-Zr-O system was used. The X-ray diffraction patterns were analyzed with the help of the ASTM card set5 and NBS circulars.6 MATERIALS The niobium powder (99 pct pure), the titanium powder (99.6 pct pure), the niobium pentoxide, and the zirconium dioxide used in this study were purchased from the Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J. The zirconium powder (99.4 pct pure) was obtained from the Charles Hardy Co., Inc., N.Y. Reagent-grade titanium dioxide was purchased from the Matheson Co., Inc., Norwood, Ohio. The oxides were dried in air at 700°C for 24 hr before use. Though the materials used were not "hyper-pure," the impurities present do not affect the results (lattice parameters, phase boundaries), within the experimental accuracy. PROCEDURE Samples of the desired compositions were made up, in mole pct, from the materials listed above. In some cases the intermediate binary compounds, such as NbO and TiZrO4 were prepared beforehand and used in the preparation of the samples. This technique enabled equilibrium to be reached from two sides. The components of each sample were mechanically mixed in a mortar and pestle and pressed into 3/16-in. diam pellets. The pressures used in compacting were of the order of 50 to 100 x 103 psi. Sintering was accomplished by heating the samples in a tungsten crucible (3/4-in. high, %-in. diam, 1/8-in. wall, lid with XB-in. hole). The pellets were separated from each other and from the crucible by means of small spiral coils of tungsten wire placed between the stacked pellets and on the bottom of the crucible. The sintering time was from 4 to 12 hr at 1500°C under a vacuum of 6 x 101-5 to 1 x 10-6 mm of Hg. All samples were reground after the first or second heating repressed, and reheated. In most cases: equilibrium was obtained after the first heating, as the X-ray diffraction pictures after each heating remained unchanged. Quenching of the samples from 1500°C was at first only possible by allowing the crucible and its contents to lose heat by radiation. The temperature dropped from 1500° to 900°c in approximately 1 1/2 min, which was considered adequate when compared to the times used by other investigators to reach equilibrium in the temperature range of 1000°c and lower. Later, a new technique for faster quenching of the samples was cleveloped. This technique involved the removal of the samples from the crucible, whereupon they were quenched by coming in contact with the water-cooled copper base of the furnace. This manipulation was performed without breaking the vacuum. The sample pellets were placed on a tungsten wire rack inside the crucible. The wire rack passed through the hole in the crucible lid, where it was connected to a small nonmagnetic chain. The chain was fed to the side of the furnace by means of a brass rack which fitted between the body and lid of the furnace. FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

WITH a brilliance undimmed by hard times, the annual dinner on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, was a complete success. More than 600 members, friends and ladies gathered early and filled the anterooms of the grand ballroom of the Commodore Hotel, while the president's reception was in progress, and then at the sound of the gong and with the music of the orchestra, rising above the happy din of conversation thronged to their seats at the tables. Following the "potage Ambassadeur"-probably to eliminate a very real hazard-the usual toy balloons appeared and a gay and lively scene, punctuated by multitudinous explosions, ensued, as the hundreds, of variously colored spheres bounced yon and hither until their gaseous existence was ended on the glowing end of a cigar or cigarette. In 1941 Illinois produced 134,139,000 bbl. of oil, or 9.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the states. The production for 1941 declined 9.2 per cent from the previous year's total of 147,647,000 bbl. Daily average production for 1941 was 366,000 bbl. At the beginning of the year daily production was slightly more than 326,000 bbl. and it remained at appoximately that amount until June, when there was a slight increase. The increase continued until the peak of 431,260 bbl. daily was reached for the week ending Oct. 4. Daily average production at the end of the year was approximately 387,500 barrels. The increased production during the last half of 1941 was largely due to the rapid development of the Johnsonville field, Wayne County, the Rural Hill field, Hamilton County, and the Benton field, Franklin County—new fields discovered in the current year (Fig' 1)—and the Woodlawn pool, discovered in 1940. Discoveries In 19 counties in southern Illinois, 44 new fields were discovered in 1941 (Fig. 2 and Table 2), and extensions to 40 fields were successfully completed (Table 3). At the end of the year there were 10,496 wells in the fields discovered since Jan. I, '937, as compared with 71965 wells at the end Of '940. The area proved for production in the new fields increased from 78,040 acres at the beginning of 1941 to 97,483 acres at the end of the year (Table I)—an increase of 19,433 acres, of which 9,955 acres are in the fields discovered during the current year, and the remainder of 9,478 acres in extensions to pools discovered earlier. Drilling During the past year, 3838 wells were completed in Illinois (Table 4), of which 2912 were oil producers, 13 were gas producers and 913 were dry holes; 76 per cent of the wells drilled were producers. Of the total number drilled, 591 wells are classified as "wildcat" and of these 84 (1 in 7) were successful in obtaining production. The results of an investigation to ascer-tain the reason for the locations of the wildcat wells are set forth in Table 5. Of the 591 wildcat wells, the 292 known to have been located by scientific methods were 21.6 per cent successful. The total footage of wildcat wells drilled in 1941 was 1,341,743 ft., of which a total of 216,995 ft. was drilled in successful wells. Exploration MEthods Subsurface geology and geophysics, largely the reflection seismograph, are still the principal methods used in exploration and development in the state. The number of seismograph parties operating throughout the year was as follows: seven parties on Jan. I, 1941; five on Apr. I; four On July I; eight on Oct. I; fifteen on Jan. 1: 1942.

The atomic ratios of oxygen to iron in zlarious corn-posilions of wustite in the vicinity oj the reported p to n transformation were determined in the temperalure range between 950" and 1250°C. For these conditions, equilibrium vacancy concenrations have also been determined at vatious mixtures of C0,-CO. The data show a continuos introduction of iron vacancies as oxygen is introduced into wuistite. No phase change is observed with in the wuustite field. However, the value of n in the isothermal oxygen pressure dependence, the weight change shifts to 1ower values as the concentration of oxygen increases. WUSTITE is a metal deficit semiconductor with the majority lattice disorder being cation vacancies. Using the notation similar to that of Kroger and ink,' the dissolution of oxygen into wiistite using C02-CO mixtures is represented by, WHere v+! denotes a cation vacancy with k effective negative charges and kh • denotes k electron holes, h -. Applying the law of mass action and assuming a dilute solution of defects in the wiistite yields Where the square brackets denote concentrations. Furthermore, when k = 2 the cation vacancies are completely ionized, and both the concentration of cation vacancies and the concentration of electron holes are proportional to the third root of the ratio, PC /PCo. This analysis is valid for one particular mael based on an ideal solution at elevated temperatures (in this case t > 1000°C). At lower temperatures, it has been shown2 that the pressure dependence of the electronic conductivity changes in a manner which suggests that vacancies interact with or "trap" electron holes. At the very high concentrations of defects, 10'' to 10" per cu cm, these simple models no longer hold. Recently Tannhauser,3 Geiger et a1.' Bransky and Tannhauser; and Hillegas' have found an apparent p to n transformation in wiistite in the temperature range of 950" to 1300°C. This junction was found by thermoelectric and electronic conductivity measurements. Geiger eta1.' found that the electronic conductivity became almost independent of the oxygen pressure at high temperatures and oxygen concentrations within the experimental error. In addition, Vallet, Raccah, and coworkers6'7 have reported the existence of several "varieties" of wiistite which were reported to exist within what was heretofor presumed to be a

AN intermetallic compound, Ni3A1, has an ordered fcc structure of type Ll2, and shows peculiar dependence of the yield stress upon temperature; i.e., the yield stress increases by a factor of six upon raising the temperature from 77" to 900K1, 2 This compound is technologically important, since many nickel-base superalloys owe their high-temperature strength to the peculiar yield stress behavior of Ni3Al. The only study of the elastic behavior of this compound was made by Davies and Stoloff,1 who determined Young's modulus of poly crystalline Ni3A1 between 300" and 730°K. The determination of single-crystal elastic constants of Ni3A1 is therefore of interest in connection with dislocation dynamics and is reported in this paper. A single-crystal specimen, 1 by 1 by 3 cm, was cut from an ingot generously supplied by Dr. B. H. Kear of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Following initial machining with a Servomet and a surface grinder, the specimen was etched and annealed at 1100°C for 5 hr in vacuum followed by furnace cooling. Two parallel faces were oriented normal to within ±l deg of a [I101 crystallographic axis by the back-reflection Laue technique. The parallel faces were hand-lapped, etched, and polished by the usual metallographic procedures. Final thickness along the [I101 axis was (0.9325 * 0.0005) cm. Chemical analysis gave an average composition of 87.35 pct Ni. Total impurity content is esimated to be no more than 0.1 pct. The elastic constants were calculated from measurements of ultrasonic waves which were propagated along the [110] axis. A longitudinal wave and two shear waves whose displacements are aligned along the [ 110], [li~], and [001] directions, respectively, are necessary in order to completely specify the three elastic constants. Two 3/6-in. quartz transducers were bonded to the parallel faces of the sample with ~ac-seal.3 Although this bond was sensitive to thermal shock, it performed satisfactorily over the entire temperature range for both longitudinal and shear wave propagation. A frequency of 5 mHz was employed in the method of Williams and Lamb4 in order to measure the absolute value of the ultrasonic velocity. The pulse-overlap technique of Mcskimin5 was also used at this frequency in order to determine the shift in the ultrasonic velocity

THE sinking of a new shaft at the Newport mine, Ironwood, Mich., was started in May 1931 and completed on Aug. 3, 1932. During this period, 2665 ft. of shaft in granite was completed, at, an average advance of 6 ft. per 24 hr. In November of 1930, experimental work was con-ducted oil 65 ft. of shaft through 22 ft. of overburden where ledge was encountered, and this work convinced the operators that all drilling could be clone with vertical holes with the blasting relief to a 4 ½ -in. hole drilled vertically in the center of the cut. The reason for not adopting the conventional V-cut was to get away from damaging the shaft steel. The blasting in a V-cut naturally tends to throw the broken material upward, but with the cut as adopted the relief was in a horizontal direction to a large extent. The scheme of mucking employed made it necessary to keep the steel shaft sets within 511 ft. of the bottom at all times. This could not be clone without serious damage with a V-cut when blasting in granite. The cut as drilled also broke 10.53 ft. per round of drilling, which was considerably more than the experience with a V-cut in the sane material. The extended cut reduced proportionately the delays for charging, blowing smoke and handling drilling equipment in the shaft. Another advantage was the ease in drilling vertical over inclined holes, and the preservation of the proper spacing of the drill holes at the bottom of the cut.

THERE is a constant reiteration in some quarters that technical societies are autocratic and that democracy is utterly lacking and that members would welcome democratic societies in which they had full, control of affairs. While we may not speak for other societies, than our own, in so far as th's Institute is concerned such charges- can only come from people uninformed as to the circumstances. It. is no curtailment of the democratic privileges of the members that a -slate is prepared by the Nominating Committee to be voted on at the annual meeting. The Constitution of the, institute stipulates how the nominating committee shall; be chosen and who shall compose it, which prevents anything like- a- clique controlling- the situation. The Constitution further provides how the nominees shall be distributed geographically and the by-laws specify geographical boundaries: for-these nomination districts. Further more, any man or complete ticket can be placed in nomination by means of a petition signed-by only; twenty-five members,- and three or four times such an independent slate has been so nominated and elected.

INTRODUCTION Three major plant processes control the operation of an uranium in-situ mining plant. The three pro- cesses can be categorized under the headings termed - loading, elution, and precipitation. All other plant processes can be subcategorized under the three. In summary, the major plant processes in an in- situ mining plant are: 1. Loading - The pregnant lixiviant from the production wells flows through anion exchange resin. The loading of the uranium on the resin is controlled by various factors, such as ionic strength, valence, functional groups, etc. 2. Elution - The uranium-loaded resin is eluted or regenerated by a high ionic strength solution. The effluent from this process is de- fined as the pregnant eluate. 3 . Precipitation - The pregnant eluate is chemically treated to attain the ideal conditions for the selective precipitation of uranium. Hydrogen peroxide is an ideal precipitating agent under URI conditions. This paper will focus on two of the major processes: Elution and Precipitation. For the most part this relatively young industry has grasped the theory of liquids in continuous flow for the operation of the plant processes. Likewise, URI initially operated the two processes of interest with the continuous flow concept. Through laboratory experiments, URI has abandoned the flow concept and operates the eluting and precipitating stages with the concept of "batch" processes, whereby only one container, filled to a specified liquid level, is chemically processed. In the proceeding sections, each of the two pro- cesses will be discussed in detail, from their original concept to the present operation. Only minor modifications were made to the existing circuits for the conversion with results revealing a greater level of efficiency. ELUTION The elution of the loaded anion exchange resin can be achieved by different high ionic strength solutions. The selection of constituents is dependent on both chemical and economic considerations (i .e., efficiency and operating/restoration factors). The regenerant presently used is a pH 9.5 solution containing 7.5% NaCl and a mixture of Na2C03/NaHC03. expressed as 2.5% NaHC03.

Selection of an alloy steel for a heat-treated article has been facilitated by methods for the calculation of harden-ability,' as-quenched hardness and tempered tensile strength.2 Ductility and toughness may also be estimated if the steel is completely hardened on quenching, 5,6 and the present study was carried out in order to develop a basis for estimating the Izod impact strength of partially hardened steel. The investigation was directed toward the prediction of Izod impact strength in steels of normal commercial quality without consideration of special compositions or heat-treatments that might produce abnormal brittleness. It was found that Izod impact strength of alloy steel is controlled by hardness, degree of hardening on quenching, and grain size. In finegrained steels the impact strength for any given degree of hardening is inversely proportional to the tempered Rockwell C hardness, and the relation of impact strength to hardness is lowered by incomplete hardening. Calculation of the tensile strength and impact strength of heat-treating steels has shown that, except at very high strengths, tensile strength is raised by alloys without loss of impact strength whereas the tensile strength gained by higher carbon contents tends to be accom- panied by a disproportionate loss of toughness. Plain carbon steels give relatively low and unpredictable impact strength. The calculation is sufficiently accurate to be helpful in the selection of alloy steel, and common grades of alloy steel have been evaluated with respect to combinations of tensile strength and impact strength attainable after heat-treatment in sections from I to. 4 in. in diameter. Procedure The study of the relation of hardness to impact strength was based on test data derived from 24 heats from four producers. The steels included the following SAE and AISI compositions: 1020, 1030, 1040, 1340, 3310, 33167 4320, 43.30, 4340, 8620, 8630, 8640, 8720, 8730, 8740, 931°, 9317, 9440, 9917 and three high-alloy chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels. As far as is known, the steels tested were of normal commercial quality. They were supplied in 4-in. sections, which were forged to smaller sizes, prenormalized, and machined to final dimensions. Heat-treatment was carried out by heating to the usual austenitizing temperature for the grade of steel, holding for one hour per inch of thickness and quenching in still oil at room temperature. Previous work had indicated that this quenching treatment approximates a severity of H = 0.3; The bars were tempered as follows: 34 in., I in., and 1% in., 2 hr; 235 in., 3 hr; 4 in., ; hr. Previous inuestigators have repovted unusually low H* and Do values for self-dzf@szon in certazn bcc metals, e.g., chromium nnd y -uvanium. It has been postulated that this is nn experimental crl -tetion for the existpnce of a four -atom ring meclzanzsm, mid there could be. zmpovtant theoretrcal Implicatlons. By utilizing a precise sectioning technique with Cr51 as the tracer, self-dzffi-lsion measurements in large grains of 99.99-pct Cr were extended from 1200° fo 1600"C. A least- squares analysis of the data yields that D 0.280 exp (-73,20U/RT) cm2 sec-'. These AH* and Do unlues are not anomalous; there is little reason to believe that n vacancy mechanism is not opevatiue. Apparent differences at lower temperatures may result from preferential diffusion along short-circuititing paths and/or sample contamination. WITH continued technological effort, chromium and chromium-base alloys should ultimately become useful high-temperature structural materials. Accurate measurements of self-diffusion coefficients in the pure metal are necessary for a quantitative understanding of sintering, grain growth, creep, and other related rate processes. However, two conflicting determinations have been reported.* Using an Since careful diffusion studies normally yield Do values ranging from 0.1 to 10 cm2 sec-l, the Paxton-Gondolf results require independent experimental corroboration before an undue amount of speculation arises to explain the apparent anomaly. As discussed by Nowick6 and clearly shown by Hoffman and Turn-bull7 for self-diffusion in silver, a low AH* and Do can arise from preferential diffusion along grain boundaries or other short-circuiting paths. The most reliable data come from high-temperature measurements where volume effects predominate. Following a precise sectioning technique developed for determining silver diffusion in the intermetallic compound AgMg8 and cation diffusion in the corundum oxide Cr2O3,9 the purpose of this study was to measure true volume diffusion in high-purity, large-grain samples at higher temperatures than considered previously. Another point of interest is the frequent proposal10-12 that chromium undergoes an allotropic transformation between 1375" and 1800°C where the diffusion data might then show a discontinuity. I EXPERIMENTAL 1) Sample Preparation. The highest purity (99.997 pet) Cr currently available is produced by reduction of chromium tri-iodide. FOR the second consecutive year, attendance at the Coal Division sessions far exceeded exoectations. Those in charge were continually faced with problems of finding seats and space for attending members. 115 seats were set - II~ for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division and approximately 175 members showed un. Since the hotel management would not serve more than the 115 it meant that 60 members were forced to eat elsewhere. This created hard feelings with some members. How- ever, officials of the Division were not able to obtain in advance any indication of this overflow crowd, but are suggesting to the New York Office that some means other than ticket sales be adopted to obtain an estimate of Division luncheon and dinner attendance. Members could be circularized prior to he meeting or they could be checked when registering as to the events they expect to attend. Under the inspiring leadership of Cadwallader Evans, Jr., Chairman, the Coal Division had a phenomenal growth during the year. Reporting at the luncheon meeting, Newel1 Alford stated that approximately 190 new members had been obtained. A few more years of continuing increase at this rate will make the Coal Division one of the largest Divisions in the Institute.

A study of the rate of dissc5lution of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in acidic solutions under oxygen overpressures was carried out by measuring the rate of formation of cupric ions in solution. Effects of temperature, oxygen partial pressure, surface area, and concentration of sulfuric acid were evaluated. A sized batch of chalcopyrite was leached in the temperature range of 125° to 175°C and in the pressure range of 75 to 400 psi of oxygen. In 0.5 N H2SO4 all products of reaction went into solution except for trace amounts of elemental sulfur. The dissolution of chalcopyrite followed linear kinetics and was essentially independent of hydrogen ion concentration for H2S04 concentrations between 0.2 and 0.5 N. The oxygen dependence indicated adsorption approaching limiting values with increasing oxygen pressure. The linear mechanism was explained in terms of steady-state adsorption of oxygen at the chalcopyrite surface followed by a surface reaction. The enthalpy of activation for adsorption of oxygen was found to be approximately 33 kcal per mole. An activation enthalpy of approximately 9 kcal per mole was observed for the surface reaction. Charge transfer reactions are not rate controlling in the process.
