The Ti-C phase diagram exhibits a peritectic point at 1750°C and 0.8 pct C, and a peritectoid point at 920°C and 0.48 pct C. The maximum solubility of carbon in a titanium is 0.48 pct. The 6 region containing the Tic compound (20 pct C) extends to 11 pct C at the peritectic temperature. THE interest in the Ti-C alloy system stems from the fact that carbon occurs as an impurity in titanium alloys when graphite electrodes or graphite crucibles are used in their melting. Since titanium-base alloys are still in the development stage, some virtue may be found in carbon addition to titanium. The Tic compound is currently emerging as an important powder metallurgy base constituent similar to the WC compound. Ehrlich' identified the phases and structures present in the Ti-C system. The peritectoid region of the phase diagram was investigated by Jaffee et al." A preliminary diagram based on theoretical considerations was proposed at the outset of this research." The Tic compound has been investigated extensively and has been reported on in a large number of papers. Experimental Procedure Arc-melted alloys of 24 compositions in the range 0 to 20 wt pct C were investigated using metallography, X-ray diffraction, and, for the liquidus and solidus regions, incipient and complete melting. All alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (New Jersey Zinc Co., 99.95 pct Ti minimum) and spectroscopic grade carbon (National Carbon Co.). To prevent carbon spattering during arc melting the carbon was encapsulated in titanium. For alloys containing less than 1 pct C the powder was inserted into a capsule formed by drilling a hole in the as-received rod. For higher compositions, capsules were formed from titanium sheet. Arc Melting: The charges were melted in the copper-hearth cold electrode furnace shown in Fig. 1. The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. Northbound traffic, toward downtown Pitts- burgh, is confined to the east tunnel and southbound traffic to the west tunnel. In Mr. Weed's interesting paper, frequent reference is made to the Cananea copper-deposits, which are said to have been so vigorously exploited that they produced 14,000,000 Ib. of copper in 1901. The ore-bodies which yielded this large quantity of metal are described as a product of contact-metamorphism, and in Mr. Weed's genetic classification of such deposits, they receive a place under the sub-heading, "Deposits impregnating and replacing beds of contact-zone."* They are considered by Mr. Weed to represent a special type under this head, and are further classified as: " l. Chalcopyrite deposits: (a) Pyrrhotite ores; (6) Magnetite ores, Cananea type." In condensing much information into a comparatively small space, the presentation of a subject may be so abbreviated as to detract from its clearness. The situation at La Cananea, considering its importance from an economic as well as scientific standpoint, may he worthy of more detailed description. As Mr. Weed rightly remarks, " structural differences are so important, and have SO marked a bearing, not alone on the theory of their genesis, hut also on the working of the deposits and a determination of their value as mines, that they merit a full discussion."† It is my present purpose: (1) to show that it is doubtful whether the copper of La Cananea is mined, except to a limited

Samples of coal from an adit in the Fording River District of British Columbia showed hydrophilic properties between depths of 0-24.5 m (0-80 ft) and was naturally hydrophobic at greater depths. Laboratory experiments indicated that weathered samples (i.e., those mined at 0-24.5 m) could be upgraded by froth flotation at pH32 following slimes removal. The i.e.p. of samples varied regularly between pH = 1.6-4.1, the weathered fractions being at the lower end of the pH scale. These values followed a pattern comparable with the flotation behavior of samples. A patchwise structure for coal surfaces determining the resultant disjoining pressure which in turn determines flotation-non-flotation relationships is postulated.

ArcHodrilling (Arcuate Hole Drilling) of short radius overhead curved holes from within the working level with a new, small-diameter in-the-hole drill produces tangible, assayable chip samples from the entire height of the projected mine level where the hole arcs down immediately in front of the working face. Drilling through the projected level with diamond coring tools produces samples showing the competence of roof and floor strata as well as the geological and economic characteristics of the ore. Hand-portable solid state electronic surveying instrument has been developed to survey the ArcHole and a convenient nomograph plotting record sheet converts survey digital readouts to hole inclination in degrees, to radius of curvature in feet, and to attitude of the plane of curvature from vertical in degrees, all without calculation. The ArcHodrilling system offers a tool with which the exploration geologist can more nearly assess the true potential of old mining properties being reexamined and to reduce the number of surface diamond drill holes needed to secure development data about new ore bodies. It gives the mine geologist an opportunity to secure those data at a fraction of the cost of drilling from the surface. The mining supervisor has a convenient, cheap tool to look ahead to know what he will be mining tomorrow. The mill supervisor has an opportunity to reduce his mineral loss in tailings by being able to anticipate the grade of his mill feed.

THE more familiar compositions of iron-carbon-chromium1 and the iron-carbon-tungsten2 systems have been investigated with a degree of thoroughness which has permitted the construction of their three-dimensional equilibrium diagrams; and it is probable that these equilibrium diagrams are sufficiently accurate for the present metallographic needs. Strangely enough, in spite of their importance, the alloys of iron, carbon and manganese apparently have not been investigated in the same systematic manner, and so far as is known, no three-component equilibrium diagram for this system is available. Even iron-carbon-nickel alloys3 have been studied rather more thoroughly; for these the solidus and liquidus surfaces have already been determined, but the solid transformations in this, as in the manganese system, have not been reported systematically. The present paper deals with the constitution at equilibrium of a series of 36 iron-carbon-manganese alloys of commercial purity limited by 1.5 per cent carbon and 15 per cent manganese, a range of compositions including most of the manganese steels. The temperature range of melting has not been determined, nor has the high-temperature (delta iron) ferrite equilibrium been included in the study, it being considered that the more important characteristics of the manganese steels are their ordinary transformations in the solid state. The delta iron region is almost certain to be a small tetrahedron not very different in magnitude or contour from that in the iron-carbon-nickel diagram. It is probably true

Austenite grain size has long been recognized by metallurgists as an important property of steels because of its influence on toughness, hardenability, ma-chinability and creep strength. Much research has been carried out on wrought steels to develop methods for disclosing austenite grain size, and to, provide knowledge of the grain-size characteristics of steels produced and heat-treated in various ways. Much less work in these fields has been done on steel castings; partly because, owing to the variable and complex microstruc-tures of cast steels, it is frequently very difficult to obtain results that are not questionable. The object of this investigation, therefore, was to establish, for a wide variety of carbon and alloy cast steels, suitable methods for disclosing austenite grain size and some knowledge of the grain-size variations to be expected. The steel foundryman is interested in austenite grain size at two different stages in the manufacture of his products; one is just after the steel is cast, and the other is after any reheating operation carried out above the critical temperature range. In both, it must always be kept in mind that the grain size being sought is actually a previous austenite grain size, and that the austenite no longer exists once the steel has cooled to room temperature. The prob-lem of the investigator is always to use evidence obtained from the structure at room temperature to deduce this previous austenite grain size, which was established the last time the steel existed at a temperature above the critical range. Since most steel castings today are at least annealed or normalized, the measurement of austenite grain size established by heat-treatment will he considered first. More than 50 commercially produced cast steels rcpresenting a wide variety of compositions and melting practices were used in the study. For each steel, grain-size determinations were made after each of three widely varying heat-treating schedules namely, one hour at I550'F, one hour at I700°F, and six hours at 1700 F. The list of steels and results obtained on them will be found in the appendix. (See page 530.) A discussion of the knowledge gained on the applicability of various test methods and on grain-size characteristics of cast steels in general follows. THE third year of Government exploration f or potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and-the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief preliminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliff side near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to `secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

ChillaQoe is situated in latitude 17" S., about 138 miles from the port of Cairns, with which it is now connected by rail. A township has been established on the banks of Chillagoe creek, a perennial stream of irregular volume crossing the field almost at rightrangles, nearly midway between the mining-camps of Calcifer and Mungana, which have been formed at the southeastern and western extremes of the field respectively. This situation was selected because of the water-supply and its proximity to the site most suitable for the erection of reductionworks. By its central position it commands the whole of the mines. The altitude above sea-level is about 1200 ft., whereas that of Calcifer and Mungana is 1400 ft.—a difference sufficient to account for a materially higher temperature at Chillagoe. The surrounding limestone bluffis add by radiation to the heat, and, at the same time, prevent the cool breezes from passing freely through the town; consequently, the temper* ture, which is high throughout the year, and especially so during the summer months, is here ge~ierally very oppressive also. The general trend of the field is southeast and northwest, and its length about 18 miles, with an average width of 5 miles; the approximate area is thus 90 sq. miles. The surrounding mineral-district is, however, much more extensive, and numerous other mines, sprcad over wide areas and producing a variety of minerals, exist in the same or parallel belts of mineralized country, of which Chillagoe proper covers but a very small portion. Immense bluffs of limestone, wollastonite and conglomerate, rising in places to nearly 300 ft., and so~netimes nearly a quarter-mile across, give the field a very picturesque and interesting appearance. Want of knowledge on the part of experts from abroad respecting the amalgamation-system, known as the Mexican or patio process, has been the cause in this country of trouble to many foreign mining companies. This process has not been looked upon by their managers as a satisfactory method of treating silver-ores, and they prefer to employ others, which, although more modern, and often more profitable in other countries, have not proved to be so under the exceptional conditions of this country, where labor is cheap and paid in silver, while fuel is very dear. The cause of this error of judgment is probably the inexact information which has been furnished by several authors respecting the economical results of the patio process. This treatment is not suitable for silver-ores of every kind. Simple sulphides of silver are best adapted to it, and, next to these, the combinations of complex sulphides, viz., pyrargyrite, polybasite, stephanite, proustite, etc. Chlorides, bromides and iodides of silver are considered rebellious ; argentiferous galena, blende, bournonite, as also argentiferous arsenical pyrites of iron and copper, are absolutelg unsuited to this treatment. Experience has proved that high-grade ores do not give as satisfactory results as those of mediurn grades, as, for instance, carrying from 1 to 2 kilos of silver per metrical ton. The patio process, as actually practiced in this district, comprises the following operations: 1. The ore is crushed in a dry state in a roller-mill, reducing it to pea-size, from which uniform samples, and, in consequence, correct assays, can be obtained. 2. It is then thrown into the arrastra, and pulverized with water, so fine that it will pass through an 80-mesh screen.

A conceptual model (MAGSEP) is described to simulate the beneficiation characteristics of a drum magnetic separator in terms of the probability of an individual grain being recovered in the magnetic concentrate. This probability is determined as a function of particle magnetic composition and magnetic field strength and is modified by particle size and the separator operating conditions. The model predicts the size, magnetic grade and distributions of magnetic and gangue minerals in the concentrate and tailings produced by the drum separator. The configuration of the magnetic concentration circuit may be altered to permit single or double drum units in parallel or series operation. The characteristics of the feed material, in terms of a magnetic parameter, are essential in permitting the determination of individual grain recovery probabilities upon which the model is based. Thus the model requires input data relating to the distribution of composite grains in terms of magnetic grade and particle size. To illustrate the use of the conceptual model an example is given for the beneficiation of New Zealand iron sands.

When the writer first began his search for the early history of coal he was amazed at the paucity of information in literature about it, and while after six years many of the reasons for such a scarcity are understood, there are still many cases, even within the last two centuries, when one who can appreciate the tremendous part coal has played in the development of modern times, finds it hard to realize how little attention was paid to this material in those early clays. Occasionally a traveller or observer is found who foresaw how valuable coal was to be when industries were developed, but these were few and to most of those recording its occurrence it was just another mineral. George Washington was farsighted in his view of the development of this country and the need for means of transportation across the mountain barrier, but it was at least sixteen years after he must first have known of coal before he made any reference to it in his journals. He did, however, knowingly or not, select some valuable coal properties in the lands lie obtained in the West. This was then almost entirely an agricultural country, and what industries there were found a great abundance of wood fuel within easy access, there were no steam plants, and all iron was made with charcoal; in fact, the "captive mines" of the iron industry then were large timber "plantations," and when these were exhausted the furnace usually was abandoned and another one built elsewhere, as transportation of charcoal was quite expensive. Along the seaboard the cities and industries began to import coal from England and Nova Scotia early in the eighteenth century, but until the war of the Revolution began the total quantity of coal used yearly in this continent did not exceed nine thousand tons. In 1800 only two places, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia, were using coal to any extent for domestic purposes and it was much later. than this that the amount of coal used in Philadelphia, New fork, and Boston exceeded that of wood. Practically all of the early travellers and writers mentioning coal are noted in the following pages. Several Englishmen who were evidently familiar with its use and value at home, mention its presence as being of great future promise to the young nation, but to nearly all it was more or less of a curiosity and the smoke caused by its use an abomination, and it

It seems to the writer that no very important improvements require to be made in order at least to keep up the present production for many years to come. Efforts have been made for many years to observe pore structure of sedimentary rocks on a microscopic scale. A better description of the pore structure in reservoir rock would aid in the development of relations between flow through tube network models and flow in consolidated reservoir rock. The unique qualities of the scanning electron miscroscope (SEM) make it the ideal tool to use in a study of pore structure. Previous methods of studying pore structure included plastic casts of pore space and optical microscopy.l-7 There is now available a new method to observe three-dimensional flow channels in reservoir rock: a scanning electron microscope having variable magnification from X20 to X20,000 and approximately 1000 times the depth of focus of the conventional light microscopes. This microscope also can obtain stereoscopic images and can measure and diagram flow channels so that it is possible to construct a network of tubes that will model consolidated reservoir rock. THEORY OF THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE The scanning electron microscope (SEM) functions by projecting a beam of electrons through magnetic focusing lenses at a specimen and recording secondary electrons excited by the primary beam. The amount of secondary electron emission portrays the topography of the specimen because more secondary electrons are emitted from high points than from low points.
