Regarding the results of preferential flotation at Cananea, Weinig has stated that "The concentrating mill of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, furnishes an excellent example of modern flotation practice. The complete figures are given because they present so forcibly the advantages of modern selective flotation."l L. 0. Howard notes that "Perhaps the outstanding example so far published of improverrients in results through the use of selective flotation is that at Cananea, Mexico."" The following notes indicate the conditions under which the results were obtained at Cananea; also the effect of preferential flotation at the concentrator and at the smelter. In the majority of cases the full benefit of selective flotation is not fully realized, as the concentrates are shipped from the mill to smelters owned by other companies. The saving made at a certain concentrator by this method of flotation may be well understood but the saving resulting at the smelter from the results of preferential flotation at the mill is not so apparent, as the data are contained in the smelting records of some other company. Even at the smelter the great gains following preferential flotation may not be noted, as a variety of ores and concentrates from various sources are received and the difference from the changed concentrator operations of a certain mill may be obscured. As noted by Professor Weinig and Professor Howard, the results obtained at Cananea brought about a veritable metallurgical revolution at the smelter. There are probably plants at which a better preferential separation is being made than at Cananea. Many ores contain barren iron pyrite which, when depressed, does not carry copper into the tailing. Some concentrators use clean uncontaminated water for milling and in others the ore is ground much finer than at Cananea. All of these items are concerned in perfect separation. ALTHOUGH considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to 11 pct aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Strauss1 gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper5 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50° temperature levels from 400° to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solubility of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. With larger amounts of manganese the alpha boundary tends to parallel the copper-manganese binary. At 1300°F and higher,

IT is customary to make an alloy of copper in the same way, not to increase its quantity as with gold or silver, but to corrupt it for the art of casting and to destroy a certain natural viscosity in it. For this result it is accompanied by tin and also, sometimes, brass. But its proper and true alloy is fine tin, except, however, when you wish to make hammered works. For these, copper must be pure and without any trace [of impurity], otherwise it cannot be hammered thin, gilded in the fire, drawn into a wire, or made into vessels for use as is customary; but in casting, tin is almost essential. When you come to this association, just as it changes nature and appearance according to the proportion of tin which you give it, so it changes name and is no longer called copper but bronze, or, for a greater distinction of the quantity of tin for every hundred or more of copper, it is called by skilled workmen metal of more or less fineness as it contains more or less tin. This is recognized by the whiteness and brittleness: changing from red, which is the color of copper, it becomes white; from soft and flexible it becomes hard and brittle as glass. This admixture removes it so far from its original nature that one who does not know that it is a compound material believes it to be one of the number of metals engendered by Nature. Now, so that you may understand well, I tell you that various kinds of this are made, all according to the proportions of the quantities and according to the kind of work. For one kind of bronze is desired by those who make statues; this is not desired by those who make artillery or by those who make bells, mortars, basins, and similar cast objects. Now in order to alloy it into the species of bronze, eight, nine, ten, up to twelve pounds of tin are put with every hundred pounds of copper. Those who want it to make bells put twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six, depending on the tone, on whether they are large or small in form, and on whether they wish to make the tone deep or sharp and clear. The Cook Ranch Field produces from a very permeable lens of Cook Sand of lower Permian or upper Pennsylvanian age, occurring at an average depth of 1.300 ft. The field was discovered in 1926, and has been operated with low pressure gas injection since July, 1927, one of the first such projects in Texas. Cumulative recovery to Dec. 31. 1950, was 14,701,131 bbl of crude oil, an average of 1,013 bbl per acre-ft of oil rection. and 72.5 per cent of the oil originally in place. Analysis of the reservoir performance indicates that grav-ity drainage has been an important factor in the producing mechanism. The high permeability and uniformity of the reservoir were extremely Favorable tor this type of operation. INTRODUCTION The Cook Ranch Field is the largest of a number of relatively small, shallow producing areas near .Albany, in Shackelford County, Texas. This field is one of the first to be operated by gas injection in Texas, and probably is the most successful low pressure gas injection project ever attempted. The field is owned entirely by Koeser and Pendleton, Inc., and Continental Oil Co., and has been operated by Roeser and Pendleton, Inc., since it was discovered. This study has been made possible through the cooperation of Roeser and Pendleton, Inc.. in making availahle a remarkably complete set of records covering all phases of their operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of the history of the operations through Dec. 31, 1950, and to analyze some of the factors which appear to be responsible for the success of the project. Information concerning the physical plant and the early gas injection history has been presented in an earlier paper.' RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS production in the Cook Ranch Field is from a large lens of Cook Sand. of lower Permian or upper Pennsylvanian age, occurring at an average depth of 1.300 ft. The average dip of the sand body, as shown in Fig. 1. is only about 50 ft per mile to the northwest. The reservoir has an area of 930 acres and contains 15,512 acre-ft of Sand, consisting of about 14.512 acre-ft of produc-tive oil zone. and an estimated 1.000 acre-ft of primary gas-cap. The iso-pachous map (Fig. 2) was prepared from drillers' logs. Recent coring in the field has proven these logs to be quite accurate. The productive limits of the field are defined by shale on all sides but the southwest where a small zone of edgewater was encountered. This water does not appear to have encroached into the reservoir, and water production has been small. A smaller producing area to the south of the Cook Ranch Field also produces from the Cook Sand. but is separated from the reservoir under consideration by a band of shale. The sand consists of well sorted, coarse grained. rounded and subangu-lar quartz fragments. very poorly cemented. The analysis of 46 chip-core samples from two recently completed test wells indicates a range of porosity values between 12.5 and 28.2 per cent. wit11 an arithmetic average of 24.0 per cent. Air permeability values range between 50 and 2,300 md, with an arithmetic average of 1.200 md. The reservoir where cored is a Solid sand body. with no discernible major shale breaks or impermeable streaks. Vertical permeability appears to be of the same magnitude as the horizontal permeability. A core of the Cook Sand was cut ill the smaller field to the south, using lubricating oil as drilling fluid. The connate water content of the sand in this core was found to average about ten per cent, and the porosity and permeability were comparable with the values reported above. Surveying of many holes drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Metaline district has shown surprising deviations. The holes start in the Ledbetter slate (Ordovician) and pass into the underlying gently dipping Metaline limestone (Cambrian) at varying depths, locally in excess of 1000 it. All holes start vertical, but one had deflected as much as 35° at a depth of only 300 it. One hole was found to be deflected 70' at a depth of 1000 ft. These deviations were not indicated to the drillers by any action of the rods or machines. Analysis of the survey data in the light of the observed geology indicates that the holes deviate most in the Ledbetter slate and scarcely at all in the Metaline limestone. The upper part of the "limestone'" in most holes is a massive rock strongly altered by hydrothermal action and essentially homogeneous. The slate is only obscurely bedded but has a cleavage, varying from slight to strong, which is unrelated to bedding. Drill holes have deflected to become nearly perpendicular to the cleavage. Several plans and cross sections are submitted showing the behavior of various holes. Introduction The Metaline district of northeastern Washington has received much attention recently and has promise of becoming even more important as a source of zinc than at present. Exploration has been conducted largely by deep diamond drilling, and in the course of this work it was found that holes became seriously deflected. This paper deals with the nature and causes of these deflections. The district lies along the Pend Oreille River in the northeastern corner of Washington, about loo miles north of Spokane, 9 miles from British Columbia, and 15 miles from Idaho. Three mines are now in operation and for a number of years have furnished a considerable production of zinc and lead. The ore contains zinc and lead in a ratio of about 31/2 to I, and occurs in the upper part of the Metaline limestone of Cambrian age, the upper member of which, where unaltered, is a rather pure limestone. This is overlain by Ledbetter slate of Ordovician age. Ore has formed by replacement of limestone, commonly 100 to 200 ft. below the slate, in areas of gentle dip, resulting in extensive tabular ore bodies. In and near ore, limestone has been intensely altered to granular dolomite and fine-grained quartz, which, where it predominates, forms "jasperoid." As part of their war program, the Geological survey and Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of Interior have been cooperating in an investigation of the district. The exploration by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944 was conducted largely by deep diamond drilling in which as much as 1000 ft. or more of Ledbetter slate was penetrated before the ore-bearing Metalin-2 limestone was reached. During the course of this drilling it was found that holes were seriously deflected while traversing the Ledbetter slate.

ORDERED G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure were found to exist in the bcc iron-rich grains of an Fe-Au-Cu alloy that had been supersaturated with approximately equal atomic percentages of gold and copper, and aged at 400° and 350°C. Streaks and superlattice spots in electron diffraction patterns revealed the presence of the ordered zones in the aged material. The ordered Ll2 structure is commonly found for precipitates in fcc metals (e.g., Ni3A1 in nickelL7') but it is uncommon to find precipitates in bcc metals having the cesium chloride structure. The formation of the G.P. zones caused age hardening of the grains. Samples containing 3.8 at. pct each of gold and copper (with the remainder being iron) were annealed at 95@ or 1125°C in quartz capsules and were quenched by breaking the capsules under water. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed two solid solutions in the quenched samples. One solid solution was bcc and the other was fcc. The microstructure consisted of iron-rich grains of 0.3 mm diam surrounded by a yellow gold-copper-rich grain boundary network. The Au-Cu phase diagram %hows continuous solid solubility of gold and copper with ordered phases forming below 410°C. None of the ordered Au-Cu phases have the cesium chloride structure. Both Fe-Au and Fe-Cu phase diagrams3 show extended miscibility gaps and only terminal solid-solution phases. Consequently, it is reasonably certain the iron-rich grains consisted of an a-phase terminal solid solution, and the grain boundary network consisted of a gold-copper-rich terminal solid solution. Lattice parameters of the quenched solid solutions were consistent with the suggestion that the quenched phases were terminal solutions. The lattice parameter of the bcc phase (2.879A) obtained upon quenching from 950°C was higher than that (2.866A) for pure iron. The fcc phase in this sample had a lower lattice parameter than that for a 50 at. pct Au and 50 at. pci Cu solid solution, i.e., 3.866 compared to 3.877A. The lattice parameter for the 50 pct Au and 50 pct Cu solid solution was interpolated from data for Cu-Au solid solutions.4 More gold and copper were soluble in iron at 1125°C than at 950°C as indicated by a 0.012A increase in the bcc lattice parameter for a sample quenched from 1125°C. After the alloy had been quenched from 950° and 1125°C, the bcc lattice parameters were 2.879 and 2.891A1 respectively G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure-which formed during low-temperature aging—were detected by electron diffraction and observed with electron transmission microscopy. In Fig. 1, the asymmetrical streaks parallel to ( 100) directions indicate that platelike G.P. zones had formed parallel to (100) planes of the matrix. The direction of streak asymmetry shows that the bcc unit cell of the G.P. zones was larger than the bcc cell of the matrix. The ordered cesium chloride structure is indicated by low-intensity superlattice spots at 010 positions which are nonallowed for bcc structures. The superlattice spots are streaked; therefore they are from the G.P. zones and are not caused by rel-rod effects of a thin matrix phase. The appearance and size of the zones observed in electron transmission microscopy and the appearance of the asymmetrical streaks in the electron diffraction patterns for the Fe-Au-Cu alloy were the same as those observed for a similarly treated Fe-Au alloy.' This year, 226,533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with 249,913 students last year. The US Bureau of Mines, in close cooperation with the mining industry, has recently established several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face, and identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections. Applying these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable dust.

TREATMENT of the breaker wash-water discharges to remove the suspended particles of finely divided material is usually most efficiently and economically accomplished in settling or thickening tanks. The purpose of these tanks is to separate the excess water from the solids by sedimentation whereby the solid particles suspended in the water are thickened by the force of gravity. The water overflowing these tanks is either reused for coal cleaning or discharged directly to the streams. The settled solids, which are in a relatively concentrated condition, forming a sludge or thick pulp, can be disposed of by pumping to a storage dam, by slushing into mine workings, by processing for recovery of coal, or filtering by vacuum or centrifugal means and discharging with the breaker refuse. The scope of this paper will be limited to the discussion of settling and thickening equipment, the factors that influence the settlement of solids, and a brief description of tests that can be made to determine the size of settling facilities required for any particular condition. The practical application of sedimentation to the treatment of coal falls into two groups, one of classification or hydro- separation, and the other of clarification and thickening. Classification may be employed to prepare a relatively low- grade fuel, which can be used as is or can be further processed separately. Clarification and thickening is employed where the primary objective is to recover a relatively dewatered solid and return a satisfactorily clear water to breaker or streams. When a stream of water flows across a tank, the time required for a particle to travel from the feed inlet to the overflow must be a little greater than that required for the finest particles or flocs in the feed to settle out of the stream. OPERATION AND TYPES OF SETTLING EQUIPMENT Theoretically, the liquid in a settling tank should rise at a more or less constant rate throughout the area of the tank Under these conditions the rising velocity of the water must be less than the settling rate of the finest particles if clarification is to be obtained. When classification of particles is to be made in the tank, the overflow velocity must be greater than the settling velocity of the particles that are to be removed with the tank overflow. The performance of a settling tank, then, depends on the settling rate of the solids and the current velocities in the tank. The oldest types of sedimentation employ intermittent types of settling tanks of any convenient shape. Means are provided for filling the tank with pulp and allowing it to settle until quiet, for moving the clean liquor and for removing the thickened sludge. The operation is necessarily intermittent but a sufficient number of tanks is employed so that a continuous flow of clear water is maintained. T has been known for some time that both'inter-granular carbide and intergranular oxide phases cause brittleness in molybdenum. Parke and Ham' indicated that 0.0025 pct 0 present in molybdenum after solidification from the melt was sufficient to induce intergranular brittleness during forging. However, material containing 0.06 pct C could still be forged. However, adding this amount of carbon to insure deoxidation causes the formation of carbides on freezing. These carbides are precipitated at grain boundaries, and Rengstorff and Fischer' have shown they have an unfavorable effect on the room-temperature ductility of molybdenum. Take? in 1928 proposed that the solubility of carbon was a constant value of 0.30 pct from room temperature up to 1800°C. In 1935, Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker' obtained X-ray data suggesting that the solid solubility of carbon in molybdenum was between 0.07 and 0.09 pct at temperatures from 1500" to 2100°C. The a-solubility line for carbon was included in the Mo-C diagram given in the Metals Handbook as a tentative line based on the data of Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker. In order to determine the partial phase diagrams for these systems, it was necessary to construct a high-temperature furnace suitable for heat treating molybdenum at temperatures up to 4000°F. A molybdenum resistance furnace was built for this purpose in which samples could be heat treated in a purified atmosphere and quenched from any desired temperature.' Experimental Work Solubility of Carbon: Arc-cast molybdenum supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. and 18-gage molybdenum wire samples produced by powder metallurgy at the Fansteel Metallurgical Co. were used in determining the a-solubility line for the MO-C system. The cast molybdenum contained 0.032 pct C initially. Two lots of 18-gage wire were used, one containing 0.011 pct C and the other 0.005 pct C initially. All material contained a carbide phase as received. Fig. 1 illustrates the carbides found in the untreated material. Heat treatment in a purified hydrogen atmosphere was found to reduce the carbon content in the as-cast molybdenum. Purified argonT also decarburized molybdenum samples at temperatures above 3500°F; however, the carbon content remained constant during heat treatment in purified argon at lower tem- peratures. The argon was purified by passing it over titanium at 750 °C and then through a magnesium perchlorate drying tower. The hydrogen was purified by passing it through a commercial hydrogen deoxidizer, followed by a drying tower. Specimens having different initial carbon contents were heat treated in argon at 3500°F for periods ranging from 5 min to 5 hr and were analyzed for carbon. Samples of the same final carbon content had the same microstructures regardless of time at temperature. Furthermore, a gradient between center and surface in the amount of undissolved carbide particles present was never observed. It was concluded that at these low carbon levels, and at the high temperatures involved, diffusion proceeds so rapidly that the specimen is always substantially homogeneous in carbon content, in spite of the gradual loss in carbon. Based on the above findings, the following procedure was used to determine the carbon-solubility limit at 3000°, 3500°, and 4000°F. At each of these temperatures, a number of samples were heat treated, as shown in Table I, and rapidly cooled to room temperature. Since the samples lost carbon in proportion to the length of time heated, a series of samples were obtained of varying carbon contents. By use of a rapid cooling rate, the phases present at the high temperature were retained at room temperature. All samples were examined microscopically. Osborn's scholarly look doesn't prevent his keen insight into human beings and practical affairs of the world from coming through strong and clear, as it did in an exclusive interview with this reporter a half-hour after Dr. Osborn was sworn in as director of Interior's Bureau of Mines. An internationally recognized authority on geology and mineral resource development, Dr. Osborn won his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology. Since 1959, he has been vice president for research at Pennsylvania State University, where he originally joined the staff as professor of geochemistry in 1946 and also served for six years as dean of the College of Mineral Industries.

Important carboxylic acid components of tall oils were tested individually as phosphate flotation reagents. These included C18 unsaturated fatty acids and C10 to C18 saturated fatty acids and resin acids. These experiments were conducted to evaluate such factors as the degree of unsaturation, hydro-carbon chain length, isomeric form, side-group modification, and cyclic structure. The effects of mineralogical characteristics on flotation response also were considered. Results of this systematic evaluation provide guidelines for selecting efficient substitute reagents and fundamental data for further research on improved flotation technology.

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength. IN the last few years additional sintering facilities have been installed in both the Pittsburgh and the Chicago district of the United States Steel Co. Since the construction of these sintering plants made possible the use of higher percentages of flue-dust sinter in our blast-furnace burdens, it became important to study means of controlling the quality of sinter to obtain optimum results in the blast furnace. For controlling an operating process, it is necessary first to establish standards by which the quality of the product can be judged. For sinter, it appeared that an important property was its strength or its resistance to degradation during transportation and charging into the furnace. Consequently work was undertaken to establish a standard for sinter strength that could be used both for controlling sintering-plant operations and for correlating sinter quality with blast-furnace performance. The first problem in setting up a standard was that of procuring a sample that would be representative of the sinter made under any particular set of conditions at the sintering plant. Since the United States Steel Co. sintering plants discharge the finished sinter either into a large pit or onto a rotary cooler, the sinter becomes inseparably mixed with material sintered 2 hr before or 2 hr afterwards. For this reason the exact identity of the sinter is lost. A sample selected as the cooler is discharged, or as the sinter is removed from the pit, cannot be said to be truly representative of the sinter made at any specific time. Sampling The first attempt to procure a sample that would be representative of a specific sinter mix and of specific operating conditions was made by stopping the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine and removing an entire pallet full of sinter. This method, however, proved very difficult to perform and interfered considerably with the operation of the plant. To overcome this difficulty, a sampling method was devised by technologists at South Works enabling them to secure, without interrupting the sintering operation, a sample of about 1 cu ft of sinter, representative of sinter for the full depth of the sintering bed. The South Works method involves the use of a steel-frame-work basket. A typical basket is shown in Fig. 1. The basket has been used both with and without crossbars along the bottom. As long as the crossbars are in the same direction as the grate bars on the sintering machine they do not interfere with the sintering process. The basket is set on an empty grate of the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine before it passes under the swinging feed spout, see Fig. 2. When the basket is removed after it has travelled the length of the sintering machine, it contains the sample. Just before the basket is removed, the sinter is scored and chipped to facilitate removal of the sample from the sinter bed. A view of the basket after its removal is shown in Fig. 3. Although the sampling method was originally designed for use on a Dwight Lloyd sintering machine, it can also be used on the Greenawalt type of machine. When used on the Greenawalt-type machine, the basket is placed on the sintering grate before the charging car passes over it, and finally it is removed just before the pan is dumped. Testing After a method of obtaining a representative sample of sinter had been developed, the next step was to select a method of measuring its strength. The irregular shape and size of the sinter pieces precluded the use of a simple compression test for determining strength; consequently, the shatter test and tumbler test were investigated. To perform the shatter test, a sample of sinter, approximately 5 lb, is dropped from a hinged-bottom box at a height of 3 ft onto a steel plate. The broken sinter is sieve-analyzed after a specified number of drops. The tumbler test is performed with the use of a standard ASTM coke-tumbling drum. The drum is 3 ft in diam and is equipped with two lifter bars diametrically opposite one another on the inner periphery of the drum. The drum is rotated at a speed of 24 rpm for 200 revolutions, and after tumbling the sample is sieve-analyzed. To express as single numbers the results of sieve analyses after shattering or tumbling, the method suggested by R. E. Powers1 was employed. This method involved plotting the size of the sieve openings on a logarithmic scale and the cumulative per cent larger than each sieve on a probability scale as described by J. B. Austin.' The St. Lawrence Seaway and power project has received the support of the Canadian Parliament, with the House of Commons approving a bill that authorizes the Government to proceed with construction of the seaway, with or without U. S. cooperation. Itogan Mining Co., third largest gold mine in the Philippines, reopened in December under the management of Marsman and. Co. The 'mine was almost totally destroyed during the occupation. The International Materials Conference committee on copper, lead, and zinc has recommended against stockpiling during the: first quarter of 1952 because of the current demands for defense needs. The General Services Administration has told producers who have contracts calling for delivery of copper to the stockpile during the first quarter of 1952 that they do not need to make those deliveries.

Although some minerals occur in greater abundance than others, they are to a greater or lesser degree exhaustible. Depletion Allowances One of the distinctive features of the mineral industries is the allowance for depletion. The depletion allowance is a much maligned and misunderstood principal of our tax structure. Although imperfect in design, it has nevertheless served as a constructive incentive for the development and expansion of the minerals industry.

Borehole information is often the only source of information on rock conditions at depth during the stage of feasibility studies of a project, and from this data the rock mechanics engineer would like to make some quantitative estimates of rock mass cohesive strength. While judgement and experience will usually play a paramount role at this stage, simple tools for estimating rock mass cohesive strength would be an asset. In this paper, an approximate technique is suggested for assessing the cohesive strength of a randomly jointed rock mass from borehole data on fracture intensity and intact rock strength.
