Single crystals of tantalum were grown by multipass zone melting in an electron beam apparatus. Tension tests of these crystals at 4.2 x 10&apos;* per sec-gave a resolved louler yield stress of 7300 psi at with a chisel edge; total uniform deformation increased from 1 to 2 pct at 77°K to over 20 pct at 300°K. This, and slip traces, indicated that deformation is more inhomogeneous at lower temperatures. Deformation occurred exclusively by slip in <III> directions, on planes in the <111> zones. Cross slip was frequent, particularly for those orientations where the resolved shear stress on the cross system was comparable with that on the primary plane. The existence and magnitude of the upper yield point were found to be sensitive to orientation. This effect was related to the circumvention of dislocations which were "locked" by interstitial atoms, by double cross slip, or composite slip, of screw dislocations. Prestrainirg at 300°K did not remove the upper yield point in subsequent tension at 77°K. Also, this treatment was found to cause yield points, where none existed for the unprestrained material. This behavior was also rationalized in terms of the circumvention mechanism. The mechanical properties of polycrystalline tantalum have been investigated by several workers,1"4 and may be summarized by pointing out the following features: a) Sharp rise of yield stress with decreasing temperature below room temperature. b) Response to strain aging at 300" to 400"C. c) Yielding with upper and lower yield-point phenomenon at and below room temperature. d) Low strain hardening below room temperature. e) Reluctance to twin except at very high strain rate. Furthermore, tantalum is ductile at ordinary strain rates as low as 4.2"K.&apos; This feature, in particular, makes tantalum unique among the high melting point, bee transition metals of Groups V and VI in the periodic system. Therefore, a more fundamental and detailed knowledge of the low-tempera- ture deformation of tantalum is required. Since high purity and the absence of grain boundary effects make such a study most productive and unambiguous, the method of electron beam zone melting was selected for the preparation of test specimens. This technique has the further advantage that crystals may be seeded in order to obtain any desired orientation. EXPERIMENTAL The electron beam zone-melting equipment was constructed as a modification of that described by Calverley, Davis, and Lever? All crystals were made by three passes of the molten zone at 4 mm per min to achieve an optimum purity commensurate with economy of time and material. Table I reports the chemical analyses of the starting and refined metal. It will be noted that there remain some 50 to 70 wt ppm of interstitial elements, while all substi-tutional elements have been removed by evaporation. Tungsten is picked up by evaporation of the cathode filament wire. Crystal seeding was normally successful within 3 deg, and the orientation of all crystals are given in the standard stereographic triangle in Fig. 1. Tensile bars were prepared from the crystals by centerless grinding to the shape in Fig. 2. Specimens were then electropolished to remove 10 pct of the diameter in order to remove worked material and to prepare a metallographic surface for subsequent deformation trace observations. All specimens were held in the split bushing grips as indicated in the cross section view of Fig. 2. All tests were made at a strain rate of 2 112 pct per min in an Instron testing machine.

FOR many years basic control of refinery operations depended on visual observation of small chill specimens poured at various intervals during processing. The oseto of these samples was related to the physical and chemical properties of the metal. Since the =setn is dependent on many factors other than oxygen content, this method, while giving a general indication of the condition of the copper, does not accurately measure the oxygen content. For the last 3 years a modified vacuum fusion procedure which enables the operator to determine the oxygen content of the copper within 1 5 min of sampling has been in use at the Westinghouse Copper Mill. For use with this apparatus a sampling technique has been developed which gives oxygen values representative of the oxygen content of the wire bar. The sampling technique is based on a statistical study, which compared the oxygen content of the laboratory sample of copper poured at the same time a wire bar was being poured, with the oxygen content of the wire bar. The apparatus used for the determination of oxygen in copper is shown in Fig. 1 and is essentially the same as previously described but with one important modification. A very porous fritted glass disc has been inserted in the tubing between the manom- eter and 40/50 ground glass joint. The fritted disc retains the copper vapor and copper particles in the furnace section and prevents contamination of the mercury in the manometer. Without the disc the manometer became difficult to read after a few weeks of operation. In earlier work1 it had been established that the simplified vacuum fusion apparatus used at the Copper Mill gave essentially the same results as a con-vential vacuum fusion apparatus. However, for this study it was necessary to determine the difference, if any, between the oxygen content of the wire bar and the oxygen content of the small chill sample used for the oxygen analysis. This correlation was established by taking a chill sample at the same time wire bars were being poured. The wire bar being poured at the time the chill sample was taken was marked and removed for further analysis. The copper is sampled at various times during refining and cast into laboratory size samples with the mold shown in Fig. 2. The mold is made of cold rolled steel and is 2 in. high and 2 1/2 in. in diam. The large upper portion of the cast sample is used for measurement of the conductivity of the copper, The lower portion which is a rod about 1/4 in. diam by 3/4 in. long is used for determination of the oxygen content. The study of the condensation of zinc from its vapor was undertaken to shed light on certain problems encountered in large-scale electric zinc-furnace work recently conducted. It is a matter of common knowledge that one of the disadvantages of the arc type, electric zinc furnace, is the production of a large amount of blue powder and proportionately little liquid spelter, for, as stated by Stansfield,1 "A notable defect in the electric smelting of zinc ores is the difficulty experienced in obtaining the distilled zinc in the liquid state; when zinc ores are smelted electrically, very little liquid metal is commonly obtained, nearly all of the zinc being in the state of powder."

Geological Relations. In his second report upon the Geology of Alabama, Prof. M. Tuomey calls attention to a rock occurring near Florence, in the Tennessee valley, the composition of which is as follows: Per cent. Carbonate of lime,.. .. .. ..16.41 Phosphate of lime,.. .. .. ..14.19 Peroxide of iron,.. .. .. .. .36 Quartz and other insoluble matters,. .. ..68.72 99.68 This rock was referred by Prof. Tuomey to the Carboniferous, because he found the Carboniferous limestones always resting conformably upon it, whilst both rest uncomformably upon the underlying Silurian or Devonian rocks. The recent discovery in Tennessee of phosphate-rock of this age (or approximately so) has stimulated the search in Alabama for similar rich material; but our search has been, up to this time, unrewarded by the finding in quantity of anything of better quality than the rock whose analysis is given above. It is, however, in high degree probable .that the rich phosphaterock of Tennessee will at some time be found to have its counterpart in Alabama. Materials of several kinds, containing a notable quantity of phosphoric acid, have been found in Alabama in both the Cretaceous and the Tertiary formations, and for our present purpose they may be most conveniently considered in their geological relations.

INTRODUCTION AND PREVIOUS WORK IN the search to find a copper-base alloy with high strength properties, it was considered that the addition of a small amount of an age-hardening element to a binary system with useful strength properties might result in a series of alloys of theoretical and practical importance. [ ] The copper-nickel system was selected for its basic properties and chromium was added as the age-hardening element in view of the small percentage involved and its decreasing solubility with decreasing temperature. A study of the Cu-Cr binary alloys was undertaken as a preliminary investigation. However, in view of the response of these alloys to heat treatment, the scope of this phase of the investigation was widened. [ ]

Difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for overage mobile mine equipment at the Gay mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians or computer men. The Gay mine is located 17 mi east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Co. and the FMC Corp. with 1.5-2.0 million tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24-cu yd scrapers; twenty-one 30-50-ton end-dump trucks; four 3%-4%- cu yd shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units.

Cities Service Co.&apos;s Pinto Valley concentrator was designed to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. The result is a workable plant with some important innovations. These innovations, the equipment used, and plant processes are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the work efficiency and wear of the six ball mills, the largest wet ball mills made. For experiment purposes, four designs of liners were installed. The effectiveness of each design is discussed.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civilization as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the [ ] commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported. The clue history of performance of a highly volatile type oil reservoir which is now greater than 80 per cent depleted is presented. The reservoir is at a depth of approximately 8,200 ft and includes an area greater than 7,500 acres. The reservoir has been exploited by 10 wells which to date have yielded about 10,880,000 bbl of stock tank oil by pressure depletion. Reservoir pressure has declined from an original of 5,000 psi to approximately 1,450 psi. Produced gas/oil ratio has increased from 3,200 to 23,000 cu ft/bbl with a corresponriing increase in APl gravity of the stock tank oil from 440 to 620 . Pressure and fluid data are given for different stages of depletion. INTRODUCTION In papers by Sloan,&apos; and Cook, Spencer and Bo-browski,&apos; properties of highly volatile type reservoir oil were discussed in detail and methods were presented for predicting performance of reservoirs containing this type of fluid. The purpose of this paper is to present performance history of a highly volatile type oil reservoir designated as Reservoir A which has been produced by pressure depletion and field separation without processing of gas GEOLOGY The reterence field which includes Reservoir A is a structural feature north of a trend of major folding along a northeast-southwest axis. In the area of development, the structure has the appearance of a dome with formation dip of three to four degrees, but structural relations between the reference field and the axis of major folding to the south have not been determined. No faulting within the field is evident. Oil and gas productive sands have been found at depths of 7,000 ft to 10,000 ft in a columnar section of Mio-Oligocene age. The sand bodies in the section are lenticular and usually continuity of sand is limited to a small area. Sand A which forms Reservoir A at a depth of 8,200 ft, however, has exceptional continuous development in the reference field. Fig. 1 shows an isopachous map of net oil sand for Reservoir A. Net thickness of oil sand at producing wells ranges from 14 to 34 ft with an average of 22 ft. Pinch-out of sand has been shown by drilling in the southwest part of the field, but extent of the reservoir on the northwest and northeast parts of the field is indicated only by thinning of the sand. The vertical oil column between the highest and lowest producing well in the reservoir is 339 ft. No water-oil contact has been found within the reservoir. As interpreted from the isopachous map, the reservoir includes about 8,900 acres with an average net sand thickness of 12 ft. Because of limited data on extent of the reservoir, the isopachous map permits only an approximation of sand volume in the reservoir. DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION Reservoir A was discovered during 1938 and was developed with eight wells to the end of 1942. One well was completed during 1946 and the tenth well in the reservoir was completed during 1951. Three of the original wells and the last completion have produced from Sand A only. Six wells have produced from Sand A through the casing side of dual completions. Initial producing rates of the original wells ranged from 800 to 1,000 BOPD. Production history for the reservoir is shown in Fig. 2. Production of the reservoir was begun during 1940 and in May, 1952, peak production from seven wells was 5,300 BOPD. IT has been stated and accepted for many years that the automotive industry was the instigator, the principal sponsor for and the largest user of alloy steel and nonferrous alloys. The only universally recognized standard specifications and heat-treatments for these materials are those adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers. It is this same auto-motive industry that has been the chief inspiration for and consumer of modern production machine tools. The production curve of steel ingots is more sensitive to fluctuations in automotive production than any other influence or group of influences. In every other important steel-con-suming industry, automotive materials and automotive processes are the outstanding features of modern progress. In this connection I need only mention the prefabrication of buildings, following the automotive system of straight-line, interchangeable mass production; the motorization of ships and railroads, employing automotive types of prime movers; the production of pressed-steel stoves, plumbing and furniture by methods originated in the automobile-body industry and the extensive use of rubber for the cushioning of all manner of machinery as pioneered by the automotive and tire industries. Dr. Jeffries has brought out this point in his address (p. 21), assuring us that the transportation industry is the largest user of these materials. In the transportation industry, or as we might more accurately express it, the transportation group of industries, the. automotive industry pre-dominates as a user of light alloys. One out of every four tons of aluminum produced is consumed by the automotive industry. Similarly, the automotive industry ranks first in the consumption of the following metallurgical materials: steel, 24.04 per cent; malleable iron, .57; alloy steels, 72.2; nickel, 30; lead, 39 per cent.

Since German operators opened the Tsumeb mine in the early 1900&apos;s, continuous operation has been interrupted only by enforced shutdowns during two world wars and the depression of the 1930&apos;s. Original metallurgical practice was blast furnace smelting. This was applicable only to low zinc ore, leaving large tonnages of high zinc ore to be stockpiled on the surface. A gravity concentrator using tables, buddles, and jigs operated for several years, but differential flotation of the ore did not get beyond the experimental stage. When the property was put up for sale by the South African Custodian of Enemy Property there was an estimated 434,000 tons of ore on surface dumps. The dump material, assaying 4.48 pct Cu, 15.8 pct Pb, and 10.9 pct Zn, had become highly oxidized during a stay of many years on the surface. But these dump ores had to be used in evaluating possible metallurgy because the shaft became flooded after the 1940 shutdown and underground ore was unavailable. Many companies examined Tsumeb but quickly lost enthusiasm because of the formidable metallurgical problems presented by the dump ore. However, on the basis of extensive test work, the present company decided that differential flotation would be successful and purchased the property after competitive bidding.

THE Western phosphate field, virtually ignored for 40 years, has been undergoing a rapid climb to economic importance. Until World War II there seemed to be no reason for developing the phosphate rock region of the Intermountain Empire. But the tremendously increased demand for food production and the needs of many branches of the chemical industry changed all that. Quite suddenly a report made by the U. S. Geological Survey at the turn of the century became important. The survey showed that 60 pet of the nation&apos;s phosphate reserves were in the western phosphate field. Simplot Fertilizer Co. was one of the first to become actively interested in the development of the area. In August, 1945 the company began exploration of the Phosphoria Formation on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The result was the Gay Mine, about 18 miles east of Indian Agency Headquarters at Fort Hall, Idaho, developed to supply high grade phosphate rock for processing into superphosphate fertilizer at the company&apos;s Pocatello plant. Six ft of high grade oolitic phosphate rock (ranging from 32.5 to 34.5 pet P2O5) were discovered at the base of the Phosphoria Formation by diamond drilling and dozer trenching. High quality and thickness, plus the fact that the formation lay flat and near the surface made strip and open pit mining possible. In one year of mining, starting June 1946, a total of 53,000 tons of main bed oolitic phosphate rock was hauled to Pocatello for processing into supersulphate. The first year&apos;s operation was in

The United States Bureau of Mines has been studying the blastfurnace process for about ten years. An experimental furnace was developed by the Burcau in cooperation with the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station, University of Minnesota. Many data have been obtained and published.&apos; Royster, Joseph and Kinney §(48) found that the particle size of ore had an important effect upon the blast-furnace process. Kinne(28) stated: Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft, the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of theatock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and the gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. It is obvious that fine ore particles occurring in the ore as charged, or formed in the furnace due to heat and mechanical action, place a definite limitation upon the efficiency of the operation. There is also an economic loss of fine material as dust. Effect of Size of Material Kinney reported (p. 83(29)) the reduction of iron oxides between planes at three furnaces as given in Table 1. The Chicago furnace was operated on Lake ores. Distribution of gas was not good and much of the charge passed into the hearth before the iron oxide was reduced. Successful explosive gas well stimulation requires a thorough understanding of explosively driven cracks under confining in-situ stresses. In a previous paper (Simha, et a1 1983) the problem of explosively driven cracks was experimentally investigated to reveal the features of crack propagation. It was observed that the explosively driven crack propagation is the result of two different but overlapping phases. The first phase involving the initiation and early time crack propagation is entirely governed by the explosively generated stress transients. The rapidly decaying stress transients then lead to the second phase of crack propagation largely controlled by the in-situ stresses. The purpose of this paper is to more fully understand the characteristics of the first phase concerning the initiation and early time propagation of explosively driven cracks. Experiments are conducted with plastic models under biaxial compression and the dynamic event is observed with a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Schardin type. The experimental observations are utilized to propose analytical models of crack initiation under explosive loading to aid in the design of multiple fracturing necessary for successful application of modern well stimulation techniques.

MANY requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulphur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended. COKE FOR BLAST-FURNACE USE For purposes of illustration, we take the case of coal washed for coke to be used in the iron blast furnace. The method outlined can be made general in its application by substituting for the figures used here the actual operating figures for the particular case under consideration. In general, it costs the blast-furnace operation from 8 to 25 c. per ton of pig iron to slag out each 1 per cent. of ash introduced into the blast furnace by the coke. This figure depends on which one per cent. of ash is removed, and decreases with decrease in ash: When blast furnaces and coal mines are considered as a whole, the figure decreases to zero and then becomes negative, on account of low recovery of washed coal. Various figures1 have been given by different investigators: These figures necessarily differ, not only on account of the differences in operating costs but on account of the difference in the respective fuels as well. For the purpose of this paper, which, as explained, is to point out a method of attacking a certain problem, the figures used in the exposition of the method are of secondary importance. It is apparent that no universally applicable figures can be used, because there are none. Each plant has its own coal,2 its own operating cost, and its own conditions.

The self-diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a liquid silicate slag containing 40 pct SiO2, 40 pct CaO, and 20 pct Al2O3, was determined using the capillary eff;usion technique. Two stable isotopes of oxygen (O17 and O18) were used as tracers. After each diffision run, the slags were reduced with graphite, the evolved carbon monoxide collected and converted into CO,. The oxygen isotope concentrations were obtazned by measuring the (CO2)45/(CO2)44 and the (CO2)46/(CO2) ratios of the gas. It was found that for O17 Exchange of oxygen between neighboring silicate anions, possibly accompanied by the rotation of these complexes, is a probable diffusion mechanism. The exchange of oxygen atoms between holes in the silicate "lattice" may also be postulated. A full understanding of the properties of slags is unlikely unless the structural details are clearly established. Thus properties such as surface tension, viscosity, expansivity, electrical conductivity, ionic mobility, density, compressibility, and so forth, have been studied. Of importance also are the self-diffusion coefficients and the energies of activation for diffusion of the component ions. The self-diffusion coefficients of calcium, 1-3silicon,, sulfur,4 and aluminumS in a ternary silicate slag have been determined with the aid of radio-isotopes. The self-diffusion coefficient of oxygen in such a slag was investigated in the course of the work reported here.

IN the course of another investigation the lattice parameters were determined for a series of compositions of tin in copper. Ten-gram samples of the alloys were made from spectroscopically pure tin and copper. The metals were weighed and placed in graphite capsules (previously fired at 5500°F) which were then sealed individually in evacuated vycor tubes. The tubes were mounted on a spit, transverse to its axis, which continually rotated the melts in a furnace. After homogenizing, filings were made of one third of each slug by filing off a complete cross section. A 325-mesh sieve was used to obtain the powder for the X-ray determination. The sieved powders were annealed in vacuo at 600°C for 24 hr to remove the cold work, and then quenched. The lattice parameters were determined with a flat-plate back-reflection camera using CuKa radiation (A., = 1.5405A, A,? = - 1.5443A). With this radiation the (331) and (420) reflections appeared close to the focusing region. As reference lines were used the same reflections from pure copper powder, between which the (420) lines of all these alloys are situated. The variation of the systematic error over this angular range was found to be less than the estimated experimental error ±0.0005A which is indicated in Fig. 1 for all but the sample with 8 pct Sn. As a check some of the powders also were examined in a regular Debye-Scherrer camera with the Straumanis film mounting. The parameters were here evaluated by extrapolation against cos2? to ?= 90o. The results are shown in Fig. 1 where the lattice parameters in Angstrom units are plotted as a function of weight percent of tin. The following pages present data accepted by many geochemists and geologists regarding the succession of minerals and the temperatures of formation in ore deposits affiliated with igneous rocks. They also present the individual views of the author on the composition of the solutions that were active and on the mode of deposition. He does not regard these views as speculations or hypotheses but as forming a well motivated and consistent theory. It is not certain, however, that all investigators will subscribe to them. Introduction The mining engineer may not always be interested in the field of stability and temperature of origin in the mineralogy of ore deposits, but he certainly is interested in the succession of minerals because this has a definite bearing on the understanding of the ores and on the best processes of extraction. It is proposed, therefore, to summarize in plain language the principal features of succession as shown in metallic ores. Chemical analyses of ores are always important, but the real knowledge of succession—sometimes called paragenesis-—of ores has been gained only in the last 20 years, by the study of polished sections. The study of hand specimens threw much light on the subject—as shown, for instance, by Breithaupt, whose "Paragenesis," written a hundred years ago, is still useful—but the results have been modified by our slowly gained understanding of the processes of replacement. Indications of Temperature Melting Points.—In the first place, a distinction must be made as to whether the ore is a product of magmatic consolidation, of pegmatitiza-tion or of hydrothermal activity. Most of the ores fall in the latter class. In any case, the melting points, although of importance, are not definite indications. Coke is the product of dry distillation of bituminous coal, by which the volatile matter is driven off, producing a hard body of cellular structure. Not all bituminous coals will coke, and there has been much discussion regarding the substance which is present in coking-coals to distinguish them from dry coals. Professor Lewes says that the bituminous matter in coal is largely derived from the spores of fossil mosses. Resins are present in all soft coals, and contribute largely to the cementing of the coke. The resinates and hydrocarbons begin to distil out at moderate temperatures and leave the pitchy residual, which at 500&apos; C. forms a mass already well caked together, if the proportion of humus residual is not too great. This coke is soft, but if the heat be raised to 1,000° C. the pitch decomposes further, leaving carbon, and Professor Lewes is convinced that the coking bond is due to these liquid products which distil off, leaving pitch, which then carbonizes and binds the mass into coke. Professor Parr concludes that the structures of the organic compouilds of the coal Which furnish the cemeding-material for coke, and which are apparently attacked by oxygen, have not been determined and seen] to vary somesvhat in different types of coal. However, they yield, on oxidation, humic acids of varying composition which decompose into powdery residues. Because of the complex nature of these substances and the difficulty experienced in isolating and identifying them, the theory of coking is still an open problem and the explanations advanced are largely hypothetical. In the coking process the volatile matter driven off in the oven consists mainly of tar, ammonia, and gas, familiarly known as by-products. Application Of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable corrections for sand thickness. The procedure in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory Introduction In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. These factors may be large differences in sand thickness, permeability of the sand, salinity of the interstitial water, mud resistivity, formation temperature, and other sources.
