IN the search for practical geological problems amenable to solution by the potential methods, the geophysicist is led to study mathematically various theoretical cases. In these idealistic discussions, the media under consideration are generally supposed to be homogeneous and iso-tropic. The geophysicist, of course, realizes perfectly that these condi-tions do not occur in their entirety in reality. However, the assumptions made are justified, because very often they are necessary in order to render possible an exhaustive study of a given problem, which otherwise would be too complicated, and would not lend itself to a complete mathe-matical analysis. Of the above two assumptions, that concerning the homogeneity of a given geological formation is satisfactorily realized except in so far as isotropy is concerned, since this property is not often encountered in practice. As a consequence, it is very desirable for the geophysicist to have quite an extensive knowledge of the properties of anisotropic forma-tions, and of the laws that govern the propagation of electric current therein. With such principles in mind, he will be able to decide whether the conclusions arrived at in simple, isotropic conditions are still correct in more complex cases, or in what way they must be modified or adapted in order to constitute a sound basis for the interpretation of the results obtained in anisotropic media. On the other hand, the fact that in anisotropic formations themobility of the ions is greater along the strike than perpendicular thereto can be utilized for determining the direction of the dip by induc-tion measurements. We therefore propose to study in three successive chapters the following points: 1. Propagation of the electric current in anisotropic media. 2. Some consequences of the anisotropy of geological formations with reference to the surface electrical measurements, and their interpretation. 3. Determination of the direction of the dip of anisotropic formations by surface induction measurements.

Most commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-Alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc-alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. It was therefore concluded that the other existing phase change, namely, the segregation of secondary phase from the zinc-base solid solution, must account for the major portion of the shrinkage.

Money is like an arm or leg-use it or lose it." -Henry Ford INTRODUCTION If it were not for the existence of interest, the analysis of investment opportunities would be greatly simplified. In the absence of interest, investors would be indifferent as to when cash outlays are made or cash benefits are received. It would, in fact, be irrelevant whether the outlays preceded or followed inflows as long as both amounts are known with certainty. Of course, it does make a considerable difference whether, for example, a firm receives $1 million now or five years from now. The reason is that money does, indeed, have a value which is a function of time. Interest is how this time value is measured. Interest is generally defined as money paid for the use of borrowed money. In other words, interest is the rental charge for using an asset over some specific time period. The rate of interest is the ratio of the interest chargeable at the end of a specific period of time to the money owed, or borrowed, at the beginning of that period. In order to understand why interest exists, it is necessary to take the lender's viewpoint. The lender can justify charging interest for several reasons: 1) Risk: The lender is faced with the possibility that the borrower will be unable to repay the loan. 2) Inflation: Money repaid in the future will be in units of lower value due to inflation. 3) Transactions Cost: There will be expense incurred in preparing the loan agreement, recording payments, collecting the loan, and other administrative tasks. 4) Opportunity Cost: By committing limited funds to one borrower, a lender is unable to take advantage of other available opportunities. 5) Postponement of Pleasure: By lending money, an individual (or organization) is postponing the pleasure which that money could purchase. Each of these is a valid reason for a lender demanding interest from a borrower. The level of interest is, like the price of other assets, determined by supply and demand. Nonetheless, from time to time various analysts have taken a then current average interest rate and broken it down into the components described previously.

THE firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 14000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the development of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovered by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... . put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silver spoon downward, without the least force upward.1," This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only, is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. AT MIDNIGHT of Sunday, Aug. 27, 1922, a fire was discovered in the main shaft of the Argonaut mine, Jackson, Cal. With the excep-tion of a shift boss and two skip tenders who escaped, the entire night shift of 47 men was trapped in the mine and entombed for 22 days, when the bodies were recovered. The entombed miners made a valiant but fruitless effort to save their lives. Rescue crews toiled strenu-ously day and night for 21 days to save the entombed men, only to find they had arrived too late. From the experiences of the entombed miners and of the rescue crews, valuable lessons may be learned to prevent future catastrophes.

Changes in existing airway and fan-installation conditions offer the most common opportunities for effecting economical operation of mine-ventilating systems, but the largest possibilities for securing this result lie in the original design of the main airways for efficient service. Formulas, and charts for their graphical solution, are presented herewith for the determination of the elements of airways design when the conditions of service are known or may be roughly approximated. Although the analyses are made with particular reference to metal-mine airways, there is no essential difference between main airways in metal and coal mines, and the methods presented are applicable to both. Little attention is paid to designing airways for maximum economy in the ventilation of metal mines. Most of the openings used as main airways are originally designed and used for transportation and other operating purposes. Even where openings are made primarily for ventilation, the possibility of their future use for other operating purposes, or even custom alone, usually results in the selection of a size and shape similar to those of existing openings. Natural conditions, such as heavy ground, often seriously limit the size of opening that can be maintained without excessive expense; and various operating factors, such as velocity limitations on traveling roads, often dictate size requirements in excess of those required for economy in ventilation only. In metal mines the main airways are, as a rule, too small rather than too large for economic service, with the general result that the quantities in circulation are often less than the mine's proper requirements over long periods, even though excessive amounts of power are applied in an effort to remedy conditions. Increasing the area of an airway increases the cost for excavation and lining practically proportionately but at the same time affects a very rapid decrease in power requirements. The balancing of these two factors of the expense to give a minimum total yearly operating cost for ventilation is mainly a matter of proper original design of the main airways of the mine, since the large volumes handled through these parts of the system involve large power costs and thus present opportunities for effecting large savings through proper design. The size of coal pillars in mines until recently has been determined by experience without being based upon scientific investigations. As a consequence, the size of pillars had invariably been larger than could be accounted for because of the number of unknown factors involved which influence the strength, dictating the use of large safety factors. With the mining going deeper, the size of the pillars greatly increases and sometimes a considerable portion of the mineral property are blocked in the mine pillars required to support the superincumbent strata. With the advances in the field of Rock Mechanics, attention of mine planning engineers has been focused upon the design of mine pillars for safe and efficient working as well as decrease losses of coal. The problem involves the study of three factors: (1) Presence of stresses in the area and their distribution on pillars in the course of extraction. (2) The influence of external factors on the strength of coal. (3) The inherent mechanical properties of coal. These aspects have been studied by a large number of investigators, the first by in-situ stress measurements and photoelastic studies and the second and third aspect by studies conducted in the laboratory on small size specimens (Bunting, 1911; Evens & Pomeroy, 1961; Gaddy, 1956; Greenland et al, 1941; Steart 1954). The size of the specimens tested in the laboratory has been limited to a few inches and the results obtained have been extrapolated by large factors, sometimes several hundred times the largest specimen tested. Still, the subject of iron ore is associated in peoples' minds mostly with the Lake Superior region and this is as it should be. The Minnesota Section meeting exposed the forces that over a period of two decades, 1950 to 1970, are revolutionizing the industry. The Lake Superior region has been at the center of these changes and has been deeply affected by them. The rise of foreign sources of iron ore that did not require beneficiation and taxation considerations were for a number of years a giant setback for the Lake Superior region and Minnesota in particular. However, the companies in this region have led the drive to improve the quality of ores which are culminating in the tailored pellet. This is a product in which iron content, silica, without significant impurities, is manufactured for optimum blast furnace performance. The oxide pellet does not seem to be the end as partially or prereduced pellets are closer at hand.

8.1-1. History and Description of Shovels. The history of excavating machinery is not clearly defined but the machines seem to have been originally developed for dredging activities, principally involving rivers and harbors. The first, as far as can be determined, was a steam "spoon dredge" developed by Grimshaw of Boulton and Watt of Sunderland, England, in 1796. The land machine forerunner of the present-day power shovel was not developed until 1835. It was invented by William Smith Otis, a young partner of a Philadelphia contracting firm by the name of Carmichael and Fairbanks. The moving force behind this invention was the heavy activity in railroad construction. From this early start the power shovel has developed from steam powering to internal-combution-engine powering and to electric powering. In both directions it has developed to its present state of a finely engineered and precision-built tool. Through the interim the railroad-type shovel, about a half-swing arrangement designed especially for making railroad cuts and mounted on rails, was developed. The rail-mounted shovel gradually gave way to the full revolving shovel. It was high on the list in 1912 and was practically extinct by 1927. From the beginning, a few of the small revolving shovels designed primarily for the general contractors' market had found their way into quarry and mining operations. During this same period, the stripping shovel had been introduced-a 2 ½ cu. yd., 100-ton, full revolving stripping machine with a 41 ft boom. Although this shovel was designed especially for stripping, it was also used for heavy-duty, open pit mining service. In 1925 the heavy-duty, full revolving quarry and mine machine was developed. Strip mining shovels evolved through a somewhat separate path. Hand digging plows and mule-drawn slip scrapers were first reported used by Kirkland, Blakeney and Groves near Danville, Illinois for strip mining

There are probably as many variations of the method for blowing-in blast-furnaces as there are furnace superintendents. That some of these variations are poor practice is shown by the troublesome and sometimes disastrous experiences of many furnace-men, even within the last few years. It is the object of this paper to put on record a blowing-in practice that has gradually developed to the point where the results are sure, safe, and satisfactory; and also to bring into discussion several variations that are questionable. The blowing-in of a modern blast-furnace is one of the greatest of metallurgical operations. On its degree of success depends much of the future life of the lining and the subsequent behavior of the furnace; and it involves possibilities of danger to the men engaged in the work. The objects to be attained are the heating of the interior of the furnace to the high temperature necessary for smelting iron; the starting of the smelting process; and the gradual movement of the stock in its downward course. The most critical points are the placing of the kindling-wood, the " bringing down " of the gas, the closing of the iron-notch, and the first cast. The lighting of the first gas, the opening of the cinder-notch for the first flush, and the running of the first cast are anxious times for the superintendent and the furnace-men. Drying-Out the Furnace. As soon as a furnace-lining is completed it should be thoroughly dried out, whether it is to be blown-in soon or not; and the longer it is dried, the better for the furnace. At least two weeks is desirable; but good results can be had with 10 days of firing. AN extended study of dustproofing Freeport-seam coal has empha-sized several fundamental features in the successful treating of bituminous coals. The extent of the exposed surface area and its absorption proper-ties for the dust-retaining film were found to be the most critical factors affecting the efficiency of fly-dust prevention. From recently published screen data and specific surface-area measure-ments on United Kingdom coals, an approximation of the surface exposed by mine-run coal and by 1-in. slack was made. The total surface area exposed by an average ton of this mine-run coal was estimated at 3768 sq. yd., while a ton of 1-in. slack represents a total surface area of 8779 sq. yd. with no additions for porosity. It is important in coal treating to consider that in mine-run coal the fraction above 1/4 in. in size represents 79.5 per cent of the total weight, but only 4 per cent of the total surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh contains 47 per cent of the total surface and only 1.2 per cent of the total weight. Also, one should appreciate that, in a 1-in. slack, the domestic stoker fraction (1 in. to 8 mesh) contains 76.3 per cent of the weight and 8.2 per cent of the surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh represents 3.3 per cent by weight and 54.8 per cent by sur-face area. Wax extraction data on 1-in. to 0 slack from mine-run treated Free-port-seam coal showed that the coating was distributed uniformly as a function of exposed surface; hence, nonuniformly on a weight basis. This distribution of the coating on mine-run coal therefore limits the extent of treating that is desirable on bituminous coal at this point in the preparation. The treatment of Freeport mine-run coal before it reached the tipple gave a 70 to 80 per cent reduction of fly-dust in the tipple, a satisfactory treated commercial slack coal, and an indicated change in the trend of tipple degradation. The premium-treated domestic sizes required a supplemental treatment for complete dustproofness.

The cyanidation of precious-metal ores is a complex chemical process. Numerous reactions occur, some of which cause an undesired consumption of alkali and of cyanide. A knowledge of these reactions, their products, and the factors that influence the rates at which they proceed should be of value in working out the most economical conditions for cyanidation; but at present, much of this knowledge is lacking. This paper is confined to a study of some of the fundamentals of cyanidation. At the start of such an investigation it is necessary to simplify the problem under consideration by eliminating as many variables as possible. The results are then, of course, not immediately applicable to practice, but it is hoped in further work to round out the information and thereby make it of more practical value. For convenience in presentation, the paper has been divided into two parts, one devoted to a study of the reaction between cyanide and gold or silver, the other to a consideration of the factors that determine the rate of dissolution. I. REACTIONS INVOLVED IN DISSOLUTION OF GOLD AND SILVER IN DILUTE CYANIDE SOLUTIONS Ever since the cyanide process for gold and silver extraction was introduced there has been discussion of the equation representing the reactions involved. In undertaking a detailed study of these factors, it was felt that the most logical first step was to determine, if possible, what reactions could theoretically take place when gold and sill-er are dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions. It is possible to determine whether or not a given reaction will theoretically take place by calculating the free energy of the reaction. This free-energy value for any given reaction is the algebraic sum of the free energies of formation of each of the reactants and products, and, if these values are known, the calculation is simple. (A chemical change always involves an energy change and the amount of energy change involved is the factor determining whether a given reaction will take place or how far it will go. A series of gas-lift tests was made which verified conclusions reached from previous studies and which showed that gas-lift performance could be calculated if reasonably accurate data on the producing characteristics of the well are available.' The test installation is described. Its essential features consisted of a rate-of-flow controller to regulate the input gas and an auxiliary string of small diameter tubing to conduct the input gas to the point of injection in the eductor tubing. In general, it was shown that for continuous gas-lift operation, injection should be as deep as possible consistent with available gas pressure and rate of production desired. Calculated curves are presented which completely characterize the gas-lift performance of the well tested. INTRODUCTION A correlation based on field data from a large number of flowing and gas-lift wells, covering a wide range of oper- ating conditions, was developed which permitted the logical design and prediction of the performance of continuous gaslift installations.' The procedure made it possible to calculate the depth, pressure, rate at which to inject gas, horsepower requirements, and the effect of production rate and tubing size on these quantities. As a result of these calculations certain significant facts were brought to light or re-emphasized. The presence of efficient ranges of operation and an optimum injection depth for a given rate of production were shown to exist as well as the fact that the lower the tubing pressure the less the horsepower requirements to lift the reservoir fluids. The fact that the gas lift performance can be predicted by calculation does not mean that any given installation will perform over the entire range predicted. Many of the conventional continuous gas-lift installations will not permit operation over the entire range predicted by calculation (particularly in the efficient range of operation) because of the performance characteristics of the installation. Consequently, field tests were initiated for the purpose of investigating and arriving at a simple continuous gas-lift installation which would operate under all conditions predicted by calculation. The first series of tests involved the use of mechanically operated valves. These valves were slip-joint type valves which are opened and closed by lowering or raising the tubing at the surface by means of a hydraulic jack. These valves were chosen because it was hoped that they could be opened or closed at will and did not depend on the gas pressure in the annulus or the pressure of the fluid in the tubing for their operation. Unfortunately, the valves did not operate satisfactorily and it was imossible to open or close each valve at will. Some limited data were obtained, however, which verified the predicted benefits resulting from the use of lower tubing pressures. In the next series of tests the valves were removed and the gas was injected from the annulus through a 14/64-in. orifice equipped with a reverse check valve. A packer was set below the valve to seal off the space between the 2-in. tubing and 5-in. casing. The injection point was located at 3,810 ft. This arrangement provided satisfactory mechanical operation. However, it was impossible to obtain low rates of liquid production at low tubing pressures as predicted by calculation. A recent research study performed under US Bureau of Mines Contract No. J0199088 "Modular Irrigation Equipment for Reclaimed Strip Mined Lands" investigated the feasibility of irrigation as a reclamation tool in the arid and semi-arid regions of the Western United States. Review of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and assistance from the mining industry resulted in the design of two strategies for the implementation of reclamation irrigation using solid set systems. It is not the intent of this paper to suggest the generalizations made on the basis of a six state area can extend to the design of an irrigation system for a specific mine site. The purpose is to present two irrigation strategies that may be implemented with solid set irrigation in this six state area. The reader should note that the following is the result of research and, therefore, original concepts were presented. The ultimate validity of these concepts will be determined by future field tests.

CHINA now leads the world in antimony production, having contributed during recent years something over 60 per cent. of the world's production. The history of the antimony industry of China dates back to 1897 when the Tai Shing Co. was formed, under contract with the Hunan. Bureau of Mines, for the smelting of the ore to crude; and in 1908 the Wall Chang Mining & Smelting Co. was formed for the smelting and refining of the ore and crude to regulus. The writer was then asked to take charge of the erection and control of this first plant for regulus production in China and has, since then, been more or less connected with the antimony industry in this country. This paper contains the results of many years' experience in connection with the Wah Chang Mining & Smelting Co., Changsha; the Pao Tai Mining & Smelting Co., Wuchow; the Loong Kee Smelting Works and the To-Cheng Smelting Works, Hankow; as well as information gathered from various other small smelters, scattered in different parts of the Provinces of Hunan, Hupeh, Kwangsi, and Kwangtung. An idea of the growing importance of regulus production in this country can be gleaned from the fact that, within a period of about 8 years, the export of regulus from Hunan alone jumped from 3 tons in 1908 to about 6000 tons in 1915; that a production of about 23,000 tons of regulus per year could easily be effected from all the smelters, as tabulated below, most of which were erected a year or two ago under the stimulus of the war booms, if the price at Hankow were to stay somewhere about $900 (Mexican) per ton, half of what it was at its height, thus enabling the utilization of ores from the hinterlands of the provinces; and even under the present ruling of prices and the closing of the less-favored smelters, the production of regulus should not be less than 12,000 tons per year.

A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.
