The influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of high-purity liquid metals and alloys of the Pb-Sn and Sb-Cd systems was investigated by the logarithmic-decrement method. The variation of viscosity with temperature above the liquidus followed the equation: n = AeE/RT No large increase in viscosity was found just before normal freezing of any of the metals or alloys investigated. Certain alloys, supercooled below their stable liquidus, however, did show a marked increase in viscosity. Experimental activation energies for viscosity were determined for the metals investigated. Liquid-metal density values were obtained by a modified Joeger's method. IK an investigation of the properties of molten metals, the study of viscosity as a suitable means for studying the physical nature of the metallic liquid state has been utilized. Although interest in the relationship of the liquid to the solid-metal state holds promise of broadening the knowledge of metals in general, much information that is available regarding the influence of temperature and composition on viscosity, especially near the freezing point, is still controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of recent work on this subject. Although interest in factors influencing the fluid behavior of metals and alloys has arisen from theoretical as well as applied studies of liquid-metal properties, the development of a comprehensive theory of the mechanism of viscosity has been handicapped because so little is known about the liquid state. Several theories of viscosity have been proposed and among the more recent are those of Andrade,1 Bernal,2 Frenkel,3 Eyring,4 and Gutmann and Simmons.5 Athough these contributions have helped to establish a basis of approach for studying the nature of viscosity, the fundamental aspects of the variation of viscosity with alloy composition have, in general, been neglected. The purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost an outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the . Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned also, with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states,1 "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the Chilean mill as a fine-grinding machine. However, the duty placed upon the machines was that of converting material that had already been

Various commercial pelroleum cokes were heat-1,reated at temperatures between 500° and 1500°C, in a nitrogen atmosphere, in laboratovy induction furnaces. The rate of tenlperature rise was varied betzveen 10" and 300°C per min, or the green cokes were flash-calcined, orv a combination of heating rates was used. Changes in the rate of heating had only negligible effects on the degree of' calcination as characterized by mean crystallite thickness and the chemical properties of the calcined coke. The physical structure of the cake was however significantly affected when rate of heating during calcination exceeded 50°C per min over the temperature range of 600° to 900°C. Surface-accessible porosily increased with the .rate of temperature rise, and this was accompanied by a change in pore size distribution. Source and properties of the green coke also had an influence on the structure of the calcined coke. The evidence presented suggests a similar mechanism of porosity development in petroleuiiz coke during calcination in industvial equiplnenl, such as rotary kilns. An increase in surface accessible povosity incveased the pitch binder requirement when the coke was used as aggregate in Soderberg paste. A correlation was established between calcined coke porosity and paste binder requiremenl. ManY results have been published on the changes of properties of petroleum coke during calcination, such as chemical composition, real density, electrical resistivity, crystallite and pore structure. The correlation of these properties with temperature of calcination and time at maximum temperature has been rather well established in both laboratory and pilot plant experiments. Surprisingly little attention has been given however to the effect of calcination conditions, such as rate of temperature rise or furnace atmosphere, on the chemical and structural properties of the calcined coke. It has been observed that petroleum coke, when calcined in industrial equipment, acquires higher porosity and lower real density than those attainable in laboratory furnaces at apparently identical calcina- tion temperature and soaking time. This paper describes a study of the effect of rate of heating during calcination on calcined coke properties using green petroleum cokes of different volatile matter, hydrogen, and sulfur content. An attempt was made to correlate the changes in coke structure with the flowability of anode paste of the type normally used in aluminum reduction cells. EXPERIMENTAL Petroleum Cokes Used. In the study of release of volatile matter and sulfur during calcination and the effect of rate of heating on calcined coke properties two delayed cokes of different sulfur contents were used. The results of analysis of the green cokes are given in Table I. In the study of the effect of flash calcination thirty-six commercial petroleum cokes from twelve different refineries were used with a range of properties shown in Table 11. Calcination Conditions. Calcination experiments were carried out in a laboratory induction furnace. In each run a 200-g sample of dry green coke sized to 10 by 65 Tyler mesh was calcined in a graphite crucible. The crucible containing the sample was placed in the middle of a stack of eight others filled with metallurgical coke to reduce temperature gradients within the sample. Temperature was measured by two Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled by a Celectray instrument. The two couples generally agreed within 5°C. In the study of volatile matter and sulfur release the samples were heated to temperatures in the range of 500" to 1500°C at a rate of 10°C per min in a nitrogen atmosphere and held at the final temperatures for 30 min. In the study of the effect of heating rate on calcined coke properties the desired rates between 10' and 300°C per min were obtained by manually adjusting the power input. Flash calcination was carried out by dropping 100 g of the green coke into the graphite dish preheated to the calcination temperature. Because of the small heat capacity of the furnace the coke was introduced in 20-g portions at a time. For this purpose a 2-in.-long nipple between two 1-in. gate valves installed on the top flange of the furnace served to provide a gas seal while feeding coke to the furnace. It was estimated that the temperature of the coke reached that of the furnace at a rate of approximately 1000°C per min. Holding time at final temperature was also 30 min. Calcined Coke Proper- Determined. Porosity was determined on 20 by 35 Tyler mesh samples using an Aminco-Winslow mercury pressure porosimeter with an operating range of 1.8 to 3000 psi absolute pressure (100 to 0.05 p pore diameter range).' There are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Incel proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube. after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice's chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4:I and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,' several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. INTRODUCTION Tailings dams up to about 200 ft. high are proposed to store tailings for a major mining operation on Marinduque Island in the Philippines. The original design of the dam utilized a compacted laterite starter dam followed by hydraulic placement of cycloned sands to form slime retaining dykes along the outer face of the dam. The upstream method of construction was proposed. In view of the failure of numerous tailings dams in Chile during the EL Cobre earthquake (I), an investigation was performed to assess the earthquake stability of the proposed dam. This included a soil investigation on the first cycloned sand dyke, which had been built to a height of 45 ft. Results indicated that the density of the sand was much lower than existing empirical criteria consider to be necessary for resistance to liquefaction. As a result, the dam was redesigned. The downstream method of construction was selected and a yearly construction program was developed to make use of sand available by cycloning. To increase shear strength, improve resistance to liquefaction, and to utilize steeper slopes, compaction of all sand in the dam was specified. A special underdrainage layer and toe drains were incorporated in the design. Details of the decant system and surface erosion alternatives are described. SITE CONDITIONS The mining project is located in the Philippine Islands. At the present annual rate of production, about 4,230,000 cu.m. of tailings will be produced yearly. The volume requirements for tailings storage design for the first 10 years of operation are in the order of 45,000,000 cu.m. The topography near the mine is mountainous with many gullies and canyons carved out by high intensity rainfall and runoff. The bedrock, which is generally shallow and weathered for a considerable depth, is overlain by laterite soils. Vegetation is comprised largely of palms, banana trees, and tropical shrubs and grasses. Precipitation is heavy. The average yearly rainfall over 24 years is 65.2 in. and the maximum recorded 24 hour rainfall is 9.0 in. High intensity rainfall is associated with typhoon storms, which are a seasonal threat inthe Philippines. Fig. 1 shows a summary of monthly precipitation.

Chemical etching methods for the simultaneous revealing of the tellurium or selenium Phase and the chalcogenide grain boundaries of the alloy systems are given. A tellurium eutectic was found Present in zone-melted ingots. Similarly, a selenium monotectic was present in ingots. In general, the second phase (tellurium or seleniumn) occubies three different sites; viz., along the chalcogenide grain boundaries, as inclusions within the chalcogenide grain, and on the undersurface of the ingot. The detection limit for the tellurium phase is about 1 u in width. THERMOELECTRIC materials based on Group V (bismuth, antimony) and Group VI (selenium, tellurium) elements have aroused considerable interest in recent years in the practical application of thermoelectric cooling. In many cases, a small amount of excess tellurium (or selenium) was added to the material to optimize its thermoelectric properties. Then the question immediately arises as to the number of phases present in the resultant alloy. In the binary systems of Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Se, the congruent melting compositions have been reported to be non-stoichiometric and are represented by Bi~Te respectively. It is to beexpected and known that Bi2Te3 and SbzTe3 crystallize from the melt with an excess of bismuth and antimony in the lattice and that tellurium forms a eutectic.~' The same could be assumed to take place in the pseudo binary systems of (Bi,Sb)zTe3 and Bi2(Se,Te)3 as well as in the system studiedby puotinen5 and other workers. Likewise, BiaSe3 crystallizes from the melt with an excess of bismuth in the lattice and selenium forms a monotectic.~ Therefore, in practice, alloys solidified from the melt often contain a second phase (tellurium or selenium) in one region or another of the solid mass even without the addition of excess tellurium (or selenium). ~u~~recht' studied the thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 alloys with excess tellurium and simultaneous additions of selenium. He mentioned that the materials show two phases because of the considerable excess of tellurium or selenium. However, he did not report as to how the tellurium or selenium phase was identified. It is generally believed that the presence of an excessive amount of tellurium or selenium phase in the alloy would adversely affect its thermoelectric properties and its uniformity. Consequently, there is a need for a simple method for the identification of the tellurium and selenium phase. The quantity of the second phase present is usually too small to be detected either by chemical analysis or by normal X-ray techniques. This investigation was therefore carried out, first, to devise a simple metallographic method for the identification of the tellurium or selenium phase coexisting with the chalcogenides and, second, to determine the distribution and specific location of the tellurium or selenium phase in the ingots. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials used for the alloy preparations were 99.999 pct pure bismuth, antimony, and tellurium and 99.997 pct pure selenium. The bismuth and antimony were obtained from Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., while the selenium and tellurium were obtained from Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. The tellurium was purified further in the laboratory by zone refining. The elements were pulverized in a stainless-steel pestle and mortar. The amounts for the desired composition were weighed out each time on an analytical balance to make up a 100-g sample. Then the sample was introduced into a Vycor ampule (19 by 150 mm), pumped down to a vacuum of 10"5 Torr for 15 min, and sealed off. The ampule was then heated in a horizontal resistance furnace at 800" to 900°C for about 20 hr. During this period the assembly was rocked back and forth several times to ensure good mixing. At the end of the heating period, the ampule was quenched in cold water and then transferred to the zone-melting apparatus described in a previous publications to grow large-size aligned polycrystals. The background and ring-heater temperatures were adjusted to make the freezing solid-liquid interface slightly convex to the liquid. The recorded temperature gradient in the vicinity of the freezing solid-liquid interface was around 15°C per cm. The ampule was moved horizontally at a speed varying from 0.4 to 2 cm per hr so that the ring heater would cover the whole ingot length from end to end. A single zone-melting pass was used for the Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Sb-Te ingots. Two passes in the forward and reverse directions were carried out for the Bi-Se and Bi-Se-Te ingots. Six passes in the forward and reverse directions were performed for the Bi-Sb-Se-Te ingot. The zone-melted ingots were found to contain several large crystals, with their basal planes (0001) approximately parallel to the growth axis. Samples of bismuth and antimony tellurides coated with a layer of tellurium, and bismuth selenide coated with a layer of selenium, were prepared for comparison in phase identification. These coatings were made by dropping a piece of the zone-melted ingot into some molten tellurium or selenium under argon atmosphere and allowing them to cool slowly to room temperature. Structures obtained on freezing of several hypo-and hypereutectic Al-Cu alloys over a range of solidification rates have been examined. Dendrite spacing, L, increases linearly with solute concentration and with the square root of the inverse freezing rate. The relationship for hypoeutectic alloys is: where rate of change of fraction solid with time, is freezing rate, C is solute concentration, (pct Cu)=1. Mass transport in inter dendritic liquid during solidification is analyzed; the experimental observations suggest maximum concentration differences and constitutional supercooling in the inter dendritic liquid increase with an increase in the solute concentration. The dendrite morphology changes with freezing rate and alloy composition. The dendrites of the a phase are parallel, uniformly spaced plates with slow freezing and rods with rapid freezing. Nonor-thogonal side branching has been observed in phases with cubic and tetragonal structures. Side branches in a dendrites are orthogonal with slow freezing and at 60 deg with rapid freezing. Formation of second-phase envelopes around the Primary phase is also discussed. DENDRITIC structure is characteristic of many types of phase transformation. The most extensively studied so far has been solidification of liquid solutions. chalmersl and coworkers have interpreted the formation of dendrites in terms of the breakdown of a planar interface. Most of the work done concerns itself with the development of an instability at the interface. Little theoretical work has been done quantitatively to relate the parameters of dendritic structure to mass transport in the liquid phase. A few empirical relations based on the experimental2'3 observations exist in the literature. Several workers2 including Brown and Adams1 have studied dendrite spacing in A1-Cu system as a function of solidification variables. In most cases, dendrite spacing has been found to increase linearly with the square root of some parameter proportional to the freezing time. The effect of solute concentration is not clear; some workers report the dendrite spacing increases with solute concentration4 whereas others report vice versa.''' ~ohatgi' has observed an increase in the spacing between ice dendrites with an increase in solute concentration in water. Tiller has also suggested that dendrite spacing should increase with solute concentration. In the present work dendrite spacing and morphology have been examined as a function of solute concentration and freezing rate. The freezing rate is defined as the fraction of liquid solidified per unit time, dfs/dß?, where f, is the fraction solid and 8 the time. The fastest freezing rate studied was 4550 times the slowest freezing rate. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS It is of interest to analyze the concentration distribution in the liquid phase between growing dendrites during solidification, Fig. 1. Since this distribution is a direct consequence of the rejection of solute by the growing solid, a diffusional process, the concentration gradients increase with the freezing rate. However, when solidification rate is the only variable in a series of experiments, the interdendritic liquid regions become smaller (i.e., the dendrites become more closely spaced) with an increase in freezing rate. The main purpose of the analytical treatment of interdendritic liquid diffusion will be to reveal a tendency for dendrite spacing to decrease with increasing solidification rate in just such a way that the maximum concentration differences developed in the liquid phase are remarkably independent of freezing rate. Two rather different analyses are set forth, one pertaining to the one-dimensional diffusion which obtains in the interdendritic liquid between parallel plate-shaped dendrites, and the other to the cylindrically symmetrical diffusion around rod-shaped dendrites during early stages of solidification. The results of the two analyses are quantitatively similar, correlating dendrite spacing, maximum concentration difference, and freezing rate. First consider the simpler one-dimensional case. Two parallel plate-shaped dendrites are separated by a distance, L, between centers, Fig. 1. Solidification takes place by the thickening of these plates, with solute being rejected into the liquid. It is assumed there is no diffusion in the solid. This thickening process is slow enough and the dendrite spacing small enough that the concentration differences which develop, although interesting and important, are very small (an important assumption which is verified ex-

Resources for Freedom, a report by the President's Materials Policy Commission, commonly termed either the Paley report, after its chairman, or the PMPC report, was issued in June 1952. The data collecting and assembly work for its preparation were done in 1951. The statistical base in most cases was 1950. It reviewed our economy and predicted what it will be in 1975.* The bases for the predictions were given. Consideration was given not only to statistical data and trends but also to technological changes taking place and likely to take place in the ensuing 25 years that will affect our economy. The supply of raw materials was studied and predictions made as to the availability of supply and the sources in 1975. One of the industries covered was iron and steel. For the most part the report did not attempt to provide a curve showing annual growth for any industry or commodity. It contrasted 1950 with the probable status in 1975. Interpolation between these dates is difficult and the Commission did not intend that it be used for short interim intervals. It is possible in 1958 to show the actual changes from 1950. The magnitude of the changes illustrates the agreement with some interpolation of the Paley report. Statistical comparisons can be general only because the Commission did not postulate a linear change. A study of the iron and steel industry will show if the general predictions have been realized or if gross errors were made. This paper is concerned with such an analysis. It is concerned with the production and consumption of crude, not fabricated products. It attempts to bring various facets of technical and statistical information on the industry up to date.

Aluminum powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, however, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and alumiuum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. A second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age-hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders. is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. Methods of Puoducing the Powder Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. For a number of reasons, however, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and alumiuum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. A second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age-hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders. is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. Methods of Puoducing the Powder Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. The dihedral angle, formed by the intersection of three interfaces, is often determined by measuring a sample of apparent angles of intersection seen on a random plane of polish, then comparing the exerimental distribution of angles to the distribution calculated by Harker and Parker. Statistical tests show that the latter distribution does not satisfactorily describe the population from which samples are drawn. It is concluded that the major reason for this discrepancy is the presence of a range of dihedral angles in all specimens. When reasonable care is used experimentally, random measuring error is unimportant. It is shown that measurements made on dispersed second-phase inclusions are subject to a systematic error depending on inclusion size, which can be minimized by using adequate magnification. A dihedral angle, calculated from a sample of observed angles as though a unique dihedral angle were present, is termed an "effective dihedral angle". Experience has shown that "effective dihedral angles'' are reproducible quantities, useful for characterizing samples. Methods of determining an "effective dihedral angle", establishing its reliability, and making comparisons between samples are discussed. THE authors have recently reported measurements of the dihedral angle formed by liquid-lead inclusions lying in nickel grain boundaries.' Di- hedral angles were measured by the statistical method first employed by Harker and parker2 and used subsequently by many other workers.3"8 Since a relatively high degree of accuracy was necessary in the authors' experiments, the reliability of this method of dihedral-angle measurement was examined. Briefly, this method of measuring dihedral angles is usually performed as follows. A multiphase alloy is prepared, equilibrated under conditions which allow sufficient interface mobility to establish equilibrium, quenched to room temperature, then prepared for metallographic examination. A large number of observed angles, formed by the traces of grain boundaries and/or interphase boundaries on the plane of polish, are measured at high magnification. If all orientations of interfaces in the specimen are equally probable, Harker and parker2 showed that the population of observed angles is described by a distribution function containing a single parameter, the dihedral angle, 8. certain properties of the population, e.g., the mode or median, have been calculated from this distribution function in terms of the dihedral angle.3, 9 Thus, if the mode or median of a sample is identified with the corresponding property of the population, a unique value for the dihedral angle is determined. One defect in this procedure lies in identifying the properties of a sample of observed angles with the properties of the population from which they are drawn. If one were to proceed in a more rigorous fashion, it would be necessary to find a function of sample properties which is an estimator of the dihedral angle. Then by determining the distribution function for the estimator one could set limits on the value of the dihedral angle. The most apparent obstacle to this straightforward approach is the complexity of the distribution function assumed to describe the population. This paper presents theory which is used to predict rock-bit bearing life reduction due to simple harmonic variations in bit forces. The theory is based on the premise that if a constant load acts for a certain fraction of the life which the bearing would have if that constant load were applied for its entire life, then the same fraction of thelife of the bearing is consumed. Total bearing life is related to simple harmonic variations in bearing life associated with instantaneous bearing loads. The results show that rock bit bearing life is not affected appreciably by forces commonly impressed upon a bit, but it is affecied appreciably by relatively large dynamic bit forces occasionally encountered during drilling. In addition, the results show that the life of sealed bearings is more sensitive to bit force variations than is the life of unsealed bearings. INTRODUCTION Roller bearings are important components in roller cone rock bits because they transmit a large portion of the drill collar weight to the formation being drilled. Unfortunately, they have a relatively short life under down-hole drilling conditions. Roller bearings are usually the first bit components to fail, and their failure leads immediately to failure of the entire bit. Short roller bearing life, and thus short bit life, is due mainly to high unit loads transmitted by the bit and to the adverse environment in which the bearings operate. The results of the study discussed in this report show how dynamic bit forces also affect roller bearing life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss theory developed to predict the effect of different magnitudes of periodic bit forces on roller bearing life. Theoretical results are used to compare the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to steady forces to the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to unsteady forces similar to the type of unsteady forces measured at the bit with a special downhole recording instrument. BACKGROUND AIanufacturers of bearings have conducted laboratory tests which show how bearing life is affected by steady bearing load. 1 The well-known empirical equation which defines bearing life follows from bearing test data. It is: where L = bearing life, hr P = bearing load, Ib C = constant q = exponent (constant). The effect of environment on bearing performance is manifested through the exponent q and the constant, C. King,2 in similar tests conducted on roller bearings used in rock bits, showed that, in addition to the load, the environment (abrasive materials, chemical components, etc.) greatly affects bearing life. His data, which show how the life of roller bearings in a 7-7/8-in. W7R bit rotating at 60 rpm is affected by bit weight and fluid environment, are displayed on a log-log plot by broken lines made up of straight line segments. A quiet revolution has taken place in the conveyor belt industry. Man-made materials, improved production facilities, better splicing techniques and emphasis on repair and maintenance have all contributed substantially to lowering material handling costs for the mining industry. Formerly the rubber industry had only cotton for a belt carcass and tree grown rubber for the protective cover. Monofilament rayon, with desirable elongation and elastic properties, was the first synthetic fiber to be used in place of cotton. But wet strength and other limitations restricted its use, and the conveyor belt industry turned to nylon.

It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. INTRODUCTION During the past 40 years, there has been in the United States of America and other industrialised Western countries a distinct displacement in the procurement of minerals from domestic sources towards an increased dependence on imported minerals. This was caused in part by one or each of the following: a lack of local supply of particular minerals, domestic source depletion or exhaustion and the relative ease and inexpensiveness of obtaining minerals from comparatively unexploited sources in underdeveloped and some developing countries, notably in the Middle East, South America, Southern Africa, and Australasia. Governments of the industrialised nations, concerned about the reliance of their economies on imported raw minerals examined both the degree of reliability and the extent of mineral resources in the countries and regions supplying the essential minerals. This brought a painful awareness of the vulnerability of industrialised countries as a result of the possible interruption of their mineral imports. In this regard, the United States of America may be quoted as a case in point: a report by a House of Representatives Subcommittee on Mines and Mining (Santini Subcommittee)1 revealed that the United States in 1980 was dependent on foreign sources for more than 50 per cent for 24 of the 32 minerals essential for national survival. The Subcommittee also acknowledged that although the United States may develop its own alternative energy sources, there are in many cases no substitutes for the strategic + minerals imported from foreign sources, from countries which are often unstable at best, hostile at worst. This resulted in various policy responses as well as contingency measures, amongst other, renewed emphasis on the utilisation of domestic mineral resources, an intensified search for substitutes of critical minerals and increased stockpiling programmes. Increased attention was devoted to analyses of the political and economic conditions prevailing in the regions from which strategic and other minerals are exported to the industrialised countries, and the formulation of policy measures vis-a-vis those regions. One region which attracted a considerable degree of attention has been Southern Africa, and in particular South Africa.2 The Santini Subcommittee affirmed that while the bulk of the minerals imported by the United States is supplied by a number of source countries, a host of critical[t] minerals vital to the well-being of that country (and this includes all the Western industrialised countries) originates from Southern Africa, a region, deservedly referred to as the "Persian Gulf of Minerals". Apart from the Republic of South Africa the mineral-rich countries concerned are Angola (diamonds, iron ore, oil), Botswana (diamonds, coal), South West Africa/Namibia (diamonds, uranium), Zambia (copper, cobalt), Zaire (industrial diamonds, copper, cobalt) and Zimbabwe (gold, nickel, chromium, asbestos). The Subcommittee however noted that, with the exception of cobalt, the greatest portion of the reserves of the critical minerals listed, lies within the borders of South Africa. SOUTH AFRICA A RELIABLE PURVEYOR OF MINERALS In view of the continual instability and political risk, along with the nationalisation of mineral industries in third world countries, importing industrialised nations have in recent years become more and more concerned about security of long-term supply, and have in consequence begun to diversify their mineral enquiries to areas where the following conditions prevail: • Long-standing record of consistency of supply; • An economic system of private enterprise; • Political stability; • A well integrated infrastructure, with a maintenance of transportation and development costs at realistic levels, and • Attractive investment opportunities, with security of the return of profits.

THIS study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. INTRODUCTION When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel- exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfulls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. The Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County. This area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles in width. Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon, Marion County, in the year 1888, by Alber-tus Voight, who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring. Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon. A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County. Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops." Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits. Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used. Early Mining The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons. The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from ½ to I-yd. capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907. From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers. At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-dump skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine. The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor, mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet. About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas power- I house near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden. From the year 1888 through the year 1939 approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations. The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore 1 they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for I the export trade. Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today i only three companies are operating. These
