As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground support were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah's 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased. roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring escessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau's reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle. having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded. European mines were the first to reach the size of worked out areas and depths of cover resulting in major roof problems. The Europeans resorted to pack walls and masonry walls, in conjunction with timber arched sets. rail arches, and combination timber and rail and steel arches. The give in these pack walls and wooden blocking was supplemented by a hinge in the center of the arch. This design is called an articulated arch Through various refinements of this principle of the support giving graduallv with the load. Toussaint-Heintzmann developed the yielding or sliding arches, in which yield is accomplished by friction in the overlapping joints of the arch. This type has gained widespread acceptance in the Ruhr and Lorraine Basin and is being manufactured by Bethlehem Steel for sale in this country. In North America the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, followed by certain iron ore mines in upper Michigan and Canada, were the first to employ these arches to any extent. The practice was later adopted by Kennecott at Ruth, Nev., and by others. Despite high initial cost, the use of these arches is growing in many parts of the country because of their suitability in heavy ground. In its present form of manufacture the yield-able arch consists of open U-shaped rolled section with heavy beads on the edge. The open edge of the U is placed toward the wall. The section nests in another section of the same dimensions, and an arch can be built up from rolled radii and tangents of various weights and lengths. Sections are fastened together by U bolts and saddles. The lap on the joint varies from 12 to 24 in., and ordinarily the bolts are tightened with a 1-in. drive air wrench. The arches are spaced with channel struts held by J bolts and saddles. Sections can also be obtained that are composed of various combinations of radii and tangents and true circles. The joints can be placed to bear against anticipated loads and asymmetrical loads imposed by dipping strata. In the arches now being manufactured clearance widths up to 19 ft are obtainable in weights of sections from 9 to 30 lb per ft. The circular cross sections are available in the same weights ranging from 8 to 16 ft diam. At present most of the arches sold are supplied only in carload lots. It is hoped that demand will grow so that distributors can stock various weights and sections to give small operators a chance to try this new type of rock support under their own particular conditions. Several excellent papers have discussed the properties of various sections now manufactured, the dimensions of the sets obtainable, and their application under widely differing conditions. The present article will describe the methods and results of a special use of the arches at Kaiser Steel mine No. 3. Sunnyside, Utah. Problem at Mine No. 3 : In 1953 Kaiser Steel Corp. laid out Sunnyside mine No. 3 to recover coking coal left by the previous operator, Utah Fuel Co.. below workings that had been abandoned in 1928. Two seams had been worked, the upper and lower, separated by 30 to 42 ft of rock. Approximately 10 million tons of coal had been extracted from this area some 3000 ft down the itch from the outcrop to a 1500-ft depth of cover. DESPITE the meetings and discussions on over- production the situation still continues to grow worse instead of better. The demand for oil has dropped to 2,700,000 bbl. per day. On the other hand domestic production has risen to 2,700,000 bbl. with prospects of further increases, and if imports and natural gas-gasoline be added to this the current supply is about 3,100,000 bbl. per day. Though during the summer and early fall the demand may exceed this figure for a few months the prospects are that 'the average demand during 1929 will be at least 200,000 bbl. per day less than the present current supply, meaning additions to stocks over the year of about 75,000,000 bbl.

The author addressed a keynote session for all divisions at last October's SME Fall Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. Discussing the competition from gas, oil, hydroelectric and atomic energy, he said that the market can only be wrested from them "by endeavoring to lower costs far beyond anything we thought possible a few years ago." He saw the rate of return for the industry as "grossly inadequate." Looking ahead, Mr. Lamm saw only a few extremely large generating plants being built. "Purchase of coal for such plants," he said, "will probably be confined to a single source on long-term contracts. Only those coal companies who are able to locate huge reserves, close to adequate cooling water, capable of being mined and transported at the lowest cost in relation to quality, will be able to compete. . . While the market for coal will be very large in terms of tons, it will be most selective and confined to a few transactions of very great magnitude. "Coal offers a proven and tried method of producing energy. The available strippable reserves of Western coal and mineable underground reserves offer the cheapest source of energy available. History will attest that coal has been a steady and stable source of energy. Up until recently, the energy market of the West has had to depend on natural gas which product has had a long and steady price escalation. Statistics show that, where coal is available, the price of gas is quite stable, but where gas is the only available fuel, it has traditionally followed a steady and upward price trend.

The rate of formation of the intermetallic compound, indium antimonide, at the interface between iudium and antimony at 100°C is greatly increased when a composite electrode of indium electrode -posited on antimony is made the cathode in an electrolytic cell. The amount of indium antimonide formed during electrolytic treatment at constant potential appeared to he proportional to the square root of time, but the scatter of the data, particularly at long times, makes it impossible to state this conclzlsi1:ely. The rate constant for the electrochemical synthesis was estimated to he 1.5 x 10-12 sq cm per sec. A similar- set of experiments was conducted in the absence of an applied potential but under otherwise similar conditions. The rate constant lor the thermal synthesis was less than 2 x 10-14 sq cm per, sec, at least two orders of magnitude less than obtained during electrolytic treatment. In a series of electrochemical studies it was observed that intermetallic compounds formed on the surface of polarized electrodes.1'2 The possibility of using this technique for the electrochemical preparation of intermetallic compounds was investigated and subsequently applied to the synthesis of the semiconducting III-V compounds. Gallium antimonide, indium arsenide. indium antimonide, and indium bismuthide were successfully formed by electrodepositing the Group III element from a boiling acid solution onto an electrode made of the Group V element. The following kinetic studies were undertaken on indium antimonide to obtain quantitative information on the rate of formation of this representative III-V compound under a potential gradient. EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic cell for these experiments was a modified, three-neck, round-bottom, 500-ml distillation flask. Sealed into the side of the flask was a Luggin probe which monitored the surface of the working electrode and extended out of the flask to a small reservoir containing a saturated calomel electrode. The counter electrode was platinum. The three electrodes were connected to a Wenking po-tentiostat which maintained a preselected constant potential near the surface of the working electrode with reference to a saturated calomel electrode. All potentials noted in this paper are with reference to a saturated calomel electrode at 45° ± 5°C. The potential and the current were both monitored using Sargent Model MR recorders. The antimony electrodes were cast in graphite molds to form spheres about 15 mm in diameter with a shank 6 mm in diameter and 10 mm long. A heavy copper wire (12B & S gage) was soldered to this shank. Collodion was applied for protection to the shank and the connecting part of the copper lead. A snug-fitting O-ring was slipped over the shank and the electrode was then fitted into a teflon holder such that only the spherical portion was exposed. The electrode surfaces were cleaned and chemically polished prior to assembly and introduction into the electrolyte by etching in a modified CP-4 solution (50 parts glacial acetic acid, 10 parts concentrated nitric acid, 2 parts 48 pct hydrofluoric acid). The electrolyte was 10-2 M In+3 in 1 MH2So4 and its temperature was held constant by refluxing. The reflux condenser was open to the atmosphere and no temperature correction was made for changes in barometric pressure. The indium concentration in the electrolyte was checked from time to time by the analytical method outlined below for the determination of the amount of indium antimonide formed electrochemically. A schematic of the recorded potential is shown in Fig. 1. At point A the antimony electrode was introduced into the cell and the open-circuit potential recorded. At point B the potentiostat, preset at the desired potential, was switched on. It was switched off at point C and the potential fell to the open-circuit value of the electrodeposited indium. The

INTRODUCTION Forecasting commodity markets is like predicting winners in a horse race: to get the answers right, one needs both luck and judgement. Commodity analysts bear some resemblance to racing tipsters as they try to convince interested parties that they have an inside track on which metal is going to win the great minerals race of the 1990s. Commodity analysts share some features with the gentlemen of the turf: • They influence other people in how to spend risk capital, • They don't put their own money at risk, and • If their tips consistently fail to deliver, then they end up looking elsewhere for employment. In order to find winners we need to know about the kind of race we are in and the strengths and weaknesses of all the runners. Miners are not interested in a five furlong sprint: their race is a long distance affair -- after all, the lead-times between discovery and start-up generally approach a decade for mines that will provide the staying power which leaders require in this industry. We need to look at the environment in which our commodities will be competing: in racing parlance, the going. Our equivalent is the economic background: just as some horses are at a relative advantage when the going is soft, so some commodities will do better than others if economic growth is sluggish. If we are going to pick the winners for the late 1990s, and as an industry, make the right investment decisions, nothing is more important than being able to forecast (with at least a semblance of accuracy) how and where the world's economy is going to develop in the next decade. In addressing the question of whether minerals are going to be leaders in the 1990s, this paper considers the idea that it will increasingly be the world outside the industrialised OECD that will provide the incremental growth in demand for mineral products. Economic growth in the Developing World is fundamentally different from that in the OECD, and the pattern of demand for materials in relation to economic output is much more favourable than in the OECD. If we are to forecast the future, we need to be able to understand the past, both in the boom times of the so called Golden Sixties and in the lean years that followed them. This should help us to decide whether the future is going to be like one or other of these extremes or, on the other hand, a return to normality. Having forecast the going, we can look at individual competitors. • Which are best placed to take advantage of the economic, social and industrial trends that we can now dimly foresee? • Which can resist the continued onslaught of the new materials and technologies? • Which of them will best weather the economic storms (assuming that recessions have not yet been abolished)? If we can provide answers to these questions, we will be well on our way to picking winners, i.e., the metals and minerals that will reward their owners with growing demand, steady (and high) prices leading to profits beyond the dreams of avarice.

The Duval Corp. porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an econornic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex Cu-Au-Ag ore is treated in a 4000-tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamoiphism and hydrothennal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes fitrther altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well-developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls. Recently, the Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp. have been added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit in this state in 15 years. A study of waterflood efficiency, given in terms of oil recovery at water breakthrough and u1timate recovery, has been made on short, consolidated Pyrex glass cores rendered oil-wet by chemical treatment. Contact angle. interfacial tension, permeability and porosity were the variables considered. Oil and water viscosities, core length and velocity of flooding were held constant. The data permit interfacial tension, contact angle, porosity, and permeability to be grouped into a scaling coefficient along with viscosity, velocity of flooding and length of core. Correlation of the .scaling coefficient with recovery at water breeakthrough is found to follow prediction; correlations of ultimate recovery demand a scaling coefficient different from that which correlates breakthrough recovery. The work indicates that, with proper control, a group of similar natural cores, of permeability plug size, call he correlated 10 indicate basic flooding performance. INTRODUCTION The fraction of oil recovered from a porous medium is related to both reservoir conditions and production techniques. An investigation of all factors that enter into this relationship is necessary in order to arrive at the optimum method of exploitation for oil reservoirs. To define this relationship, laboratory studies have been made by a great many investigators. However. an important obstacle arises if the results of these experiments on water flooding are to be applied to practice. Ditferences in behavior are to be expected between reservoirs of the dimensions encountered underground and those used in laboratory work. Factors which play an important role under laboratory conditions may be of no consequence in reservoirs. Laboratory operating practices generally differ from field operating practices. Thus. a mere understanding of the mechanism of the displacement of oil by water is not enough. It is just as necessary that the process be analyzed dimensionally to give continuity and validity to the conversion from laboratory to field. The theory of oil displacement that has come to be accepted by the majority of those who are associated with reservoir mechanics had its beginning in the work of Leverett¹ and Buckley and Leverett2. The banking of oil, observed by many previous workers, was described by the "fractional flow" and the "frontal advance'' equations. The validity of the Buckley-Leverett theory was substantiated by the experimental and theoretical work of Terwilliger et al³; moroever, the theory was extended by the introduction of the idea of a "stabilized zone" to describe the banking of oil. Levine5 showed that the Buckley-Leverett equations gave reasonable agreement between calculated and experimental breakthrough recoveries only if the capillary pressure and gravity terms were included. Rapoport and Leas1 investigated the properties of linear floods and showed that both breakthrough and maximum recovery are related to a "scaling coefficient'' derived from the Buckley-Leverctt equations. Jones-Par-ra and Calhoun6 presented another scaling coefficient which included both viscous and capillary variables. Such scaling coefficients should suffice to predicl waterflood efficiency. However, some experimenters report data which does not appear consistent with the healing coefficient approach. It is an accepted procedure to represent oil field displacement problems in which the pressure is relatively constant by a potentiometric model. Variations in reservoir permeability thickness product are represented in the model by proportional variations in electrolyte depth. It is shown that significant errors are present wherever these variations are of such magnitude that the consequent differences in the electrolyte depth in the model or any regions therein are appreciable in comparison with their respective horizontal dimensions. To demonstrate the order of magnitude of this error, a hypothetical linear oil field in which permeability varies linearly with distance was treated both analytic.ally and by potentiometric model. The results obtained from the model are compared with the exact solution for various configurations of linear geometry. Deviations in flow times up to 11 per cent were observed. It is confirmed that these discrepancies can be reduced by increasing the areal scale and/or decreasing the vertical scale of the model. It is the purpose of this work to assist in the design of potentiometric models by indicating the relationship between this error and the chosen scale factors. INTRODUCTION The fundamental geometrical criterion which determines whether the pressure distribution in an oil or gas reservoir may be simulated in a conventional potentiometric model is the requirement that all reservoir parameters be constant along any vertical line between its upper and lower boundaries. This situation never obtains exactly; nevertheless, it is usually assumed that there is no permeability stratification within the section of interest, that all wells completely penetrate the sand, that there are no gravitational effects, and that variations in thickness of the sand are small compared to the horizontal extent of the field. In these ways the reservoir problem is reduced to two dimensions in which there is no variation of pressure in the vertical direction within the limits of the sand. Variations in sand thickness and/or horizontal pesmeability may be taken into account as described by Muskat, by considering the fluid conductivity of the reservoir in its horizontal plane to be proportional to the product of permeability and sand thickness. If the variations in sand thickness are small compared to the horizontal dimensions of the reservoir, then it is a good approximation to consider the reservoir problem to be essentially two dimensional. The same approximation, however, is made in the simulation of the assumed two-dimensional reservoir by the electrolytic model. The model, if it is to take into account variations of permeability-thickness product, must of necessity be made in three dimensions, that is, with variable depth. Most potentiometric model studies and theoretical treatments reported in the literature to date2,3,4,5,6,7,8 are those in which either an average permeability was used or a constant permeability was assumed. This is understandable since detailed permeability data are not usually available for the majority of reservoirs. Central Sweden's Grängesberg underground iron ore mine, which accounts for more than three million tons of pellet product annually, is experiencing a major changeover to continuous block-caving. The newly-adopted method, complete with a total revamping of mining equipment, will be fully operational by 1975. For the past 15 years, Sweden's Grängesberg mine has been mined using two different methods. Those ore thicknesses of 117 ft or greater (they comprise about 70% of the total area) are worked by block-caving techniques with cross-cutting carried out on each 195-ft working level, and loading at the foot wall on each 58-78-ft level. Sub-level caving is carried out in all ore sections less than 117 ft thick.

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to a novel system of dredging, which, it seems to me, may prove applicable, not only to river and harbor improvements, but also to certain varieties at least of alluvial and diluvial gold mining; that is, river-mining, barmining, coast-mining, and any other similar operations now carried on by means of coffer-dams or dredging machines. The simple and effective method to which I refer is the invention of General Roy Stone, formerly an officer of volunteers, and at present a civil engineer, engaged under General Newton, of the United States Engineer Corps, upon the government works in New York harbor. General Stone has been, since September, 1878, in charge of operations upon Diamond Reef. This reef, lying between Governor's Island and the Battery, is one of the most dangerous in the harbor. Its position in the highway of navigation, and the fact that it is dangerous only to vessels of considerable draught and at certain stages of the tide, combine to increase the serious nature of the disasters which it has caused. The reef consists partly of rock in place, and partly of deposits of glacial clay, boulders, and pebbles, over all of which lies, or did lie until it was removed, the ordinary silt and rubbish of the harbor. As the purpose of the present paper has nothing to do with the special dimensions and other circumstances of this particular work, I describe those features only which are connected with General Stone's ingenious device. Various attempts have been made to remove the upper portion of Diamond Reef and secure a navigable depth at low tide. Some years ago Maillefert undertook to accomplish this by firing charges of high explosives, simply laid upon the surface. He accomplished some good in the removal of projecting points and ridges ; but as soon as the surface of the reef had become approximately level, his method was no longer effective. After the work had been taken up by the Engineer Corps, the well-known drilling-scow invented by General Newton was brought into action ; and, so long as holes could be bored and fired in solid rock, this process was effective enough. ANY one of the mining engineers who spent three years under the benevolent and protective custody of the military forces of His Imperial Nipponese Majesty will admit that he has survived a most disagreeable experience, but our friends here in the States all demand that we tell them something about our thrilling adventure. Many of the younger men who were on Luzon in December 1941 joined up with the Army, either as civilian technical employees or through their reserve officer status. They served through the Bataan and Corregidor defense and had five months of thrills and hardship, if that is what constitutes adventure. Unfortunately, too many of them are not alive to tell their stories. But for most of us, our internment as alien civilians was just one long, drawn-out pain in the neck. Yes, we starved; yes, we contracted beriberi, dysentery, typhus, dengue, and for a while had no quinine to fight the ever-present malaria; but these things are not exciting, neither is the account of them interesting. Our contingent from Mindanao, 250 .in number including 25 mining men, went through one period of starvation at Davao. When the activity of the Allied fleet interfered with the importation of staple foodstuffs, and the natives stopped bringing fruit and vegetables into the market, the food situation became acute, and in December 1943, with stocks in sight and in prospect insufficient to provision their own soldiers, our custodians decided that we must be moved to Manila. The story of that ten-day voyage in an antiquated Jap freighter is too disgusting to tell, but hardly more adventurous than the account of a game of solitaire.

Study of the occurrence of elongated ß-Mn phase fields and of their direction of extension in fifteen ternary systems indicates that the ß-,mn phases formed by manganese with other transition elements and with either silicon, germanium, or tin may be considered as electron phases. In these phases the alloying behavior of silicon on the one hand and of germanium and tin on the other shows a significant difference . Formally all observations can be satisfactorily described by attributing to germanium and tin an apparent electron concentration of nine electrons per atom. This behavior may be interpreted by assuming that germanium and tin exclude itinerant electvons because of a strong repulsive potential arising fromthe requirement that their wave junctions be orthogonal to those of- the closed d shells of these atoms. The absence of a d shell in silicon allows this atom to admit itinerant d electrons. The following new ternary phases of unknown structure were identified by means of their X-vay difjraction patterns: (Mn,Co,Si)I , (Mn,Co ,Si)Y, (Mn.Co,Si)Q , (Mn ,Ni ,Si)W , and (Mn, Ti ,Si)A. The X-ray data suggest that these phases have large unit cells and that to some extent they may he related structurally to the 0 phase. The a phase and certain other phases formed by transition elements are characterized by their preferred occurrence at a constant electron concentration. AS a result, these "electron phases" have relation to electron concentration. The tendency of the B phase to form elongated phase fields in ternary systems along the directions of constant electron concentration has been previously demonstrated. The occurrence of an elongated 0-Mn phase field in the ternary system Mn-Co-Si was schematically indicated by Cherkashin et al.l0 The present study includes fifteen ternary systems, each containing in addition to manganese a second transition element from the group Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and one of the nontransition elements silicon, germanium, or tin. In each system the boundaries of the B-Mn phase were determined in the 900°, 950°, or 1000°C isothermal section, the temperature being dictated on the one hand by the requirement of sufficient rates of diffusion to approach equilibrium conditions in reasonably short annealing periods and on the other hand by the need to avoid as much as possible the partial melting of alloys during annealing.

CRACKS which form in lead exposed to fluctuating stress frequently follow a rectangular pattern. It is well known that under ordinary atmospheric conditions these cracks are intercrystalline. On the other hand after fabrication the crystal grains in lead are in general irregular polygons. The observed facts appear to be mutually contradictory. Re-examination of some lead failures has confirmed that the rectangular cracks are intercrystal- line. It follows therefore that under fluctuating stress some of the grains lose their irregular outlines and become approximately regular polygons of cubic type. G. R. Gohn and W. C. Ellis* suggest that this is due to recrystallization during the life of the part, in such a way that the new grain boundaries are aligned at 45 deg to the longitudinal strain prior to the formation of the fatigue crack. Experiments at Baillieu Laboratory—Some recent experiments carried out in the Baillieu Laboratory in conjunction with the Broken Hill Associated Smelters have thrown some light on this transition. At Balmat in northern New York State, the St. Joseph Lead Co.'s 2100-tpd zinc mining and milling operation is utilizing a unique thickener in conjunction with conventional crushing, grinding and flotation methods. From 1930 through 1962, zinc concentrates went directly from flotation to the filtering, drying and loading facilities, all of which had to operate 24 hr per day. Wide fluctuations in tonnage also had to be accommodated due to variations in the grade of ore. Many problems were thus encountered in filtering and drying, but the cost of installing a conventional, large diameter thickener could never be justified. In 1963, after thorough investigation, an unconventional thickener that is unusual in several respects was installed at Balmat. The tank depth is 16 ft instead of the normal 8 ft. The rakes are raised and lowered by having the main drive gear located on a movable platform. Automatic controls are programmed to raise the drive platform and rakes during one shift of storage. During the next two shifts of withdrawal, the controls are programmed to lower the drive platform and rakes.

The wire textures for cold rolled and recrystallized iodide titanium and the sheet textures for this material produced by cold and hot rolling, and recrystallization at a series of temperatures were determined. &apos;The effect of the a + ß transformation on the sheet texture was noted. UNTIL recently it was believed that all hexagonal close-packed metals deformed by slip on the basal plane, (0001), and that rolling should tend to rotate this slip plane into the plane of the rolled sheet. The pole figures of cold rolled magnesium&apos; are satisfactorily explained on this basis. There is a tendency for the <1120> directions to align parallel to the rolling direction, and the principal scatter is in the rolling direction. Zinc% as a rolling texture in which the hexagonal axis is inclined 20" to 25" toward the rolling direction. Twinning is believed to account for the moving of the basal plane away from parallelism with the rolling plane. The texture of beryllium3 places the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane with the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction, and the scatter from this orientation is primarily in the transverse direction. Cold rolled textures reported for zirconium&apos; and titanium5 how the [1010] directions to lie parallel to the rolling direction and the (0001) plane tilted by approximately 25" to 30" to the rolling plane in the transverse direction. Rosi has recently reported that the mechanisms for deformation in titanium are distinctly different from those commonly reported for hexagonal close-packed metals. The principal slip plane is the prismatic plane, {1010), with some slip also occurring on the pyramidal planes, (1011). However, there is no evidence for basal slip. The slip direction is reported to be the close-packed digonal axis, [1120]. In addition to the twin plane commonly reported for metals of this class, {1012), Rosi found the twin planes (1122) and {1121), with the dominant twin plane being (1121). Information regarding the recrystallization and hot rolling textures of hexagonal close-packed metals is limited. Barrett and Smigelskas report that rolling beryllium at temperatures up to 800°C and recrystallization at 700°C produce textures not differing from the cold rolled sheet texture.3 McGeary and Lustman find that hot rolling at 850°C produces the same basic texture in zirconium as rolling at room temperature.&apos; These investigators also report that the texture for sheet zirconium recrystallized at 650 °C differs from the cold rolled orientation inasmuch as the [1120] direction, instead of the [1010] direction, is parallel to the rolling direction. In the case of titanium, it is not possible to deduce which direction is preferred in the recrystallized state from the pole figures presented by Clark." The purpose of this paper is to report an extensive investigation of the preferred orientations in iodide titanium. Since the deformation mechanisms for titanium are different from those commonly given for hexagonal close-packed metals, it is not surprising to find distinct differences between the textures of titanium and other metals of this class. Materials and Methods This investigation was carried out on iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. with an analysis as follows: N2, 0.002 pct; Mn, 0.004; Fe, 0.0065; A1, 0.0065; Pb, 0.0025; Cu, 0.01; Sn, 0.002; and Ti, remainder. The crystallities of titanium were broken from the as-deposited bar and melted to form 20 g buttons on a water-cooled copper block in a vacuum arc-furnace. Hardness tests conducted on the material before and after melting differed by only two or three Vickers Pyramid Numbers, indicating no or insignificant contamination. The buttons were hot forged, ground, and etched to sizes and shapes suitable for the rolling schedule, and vacuum annealed at 1300°F. Specimens for determination of the wire textures were reduced 91 pct in diameter to 0.027 in. in 24 steps using grooved rolls. In order for the orientation of the central region to be studied, portions of these wires were electrolytically reduced to a diameter of 0.005 in. using the procedure described by Sutcliffe and Reynolds.&apos; The sheet textures were determined on titanium cold rolled 97 pct to a thickness of 0.005 in. A reduction of approximately 10 pct per pass was used, and the rolling direction was changed 180" after each pass. Specimens used for determination of the recrystallized textures were annealed in evacuated quartz tubes at 1000°, 1300°, and 1500°F. The grain size of the 1000°F specimen was sufficiently small to give satisfactory X-ray patterns with the specimen stationary. However, it was necessary to scan the surface of the other recrystallized specimens. The microstructure of each annealed specimen was that of a recrystallized material. The diffraction rings all showed the break-up into spots typical of recrystallized structures.

THE environmental conditions under which coals are deposited are revealed by the stratigraphy of the coal basins and coal beds and by the details of the structure and the physical constitution of the coals themselves. THE LAND SURFACE Generally Low Relief or Base Level In the Paleozoic coal fields, which have longest been worked, are most important, and are best known, we find relations, in general, as follows A post-Mississippian uplift with, in most cases, very moderate deformation, followed by erosion by which the uplifted regions, especially the bolder of the new topography, were largely worn down, while the older and less deformed regions were more or less extensively base leveled. Base leveling of most of the region continued as the deposition of coal measures proceeded. Consequently, in most coal fields the Pennsylvanian, or upper Carboniferous, lies unconformably on the Mississippian or on older formations. There are but few regions in which sedimentation is seen to have been apparently continuous from the Mississippian into the Pennsylvanian ("Coal Measures").

All ladies of the families of members of the Institute-are eligible to this Auxiliary. The purpose and objects of the Auxiliary are well stated in the address of the President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings, in opening the organization meeting on the morning of Feb. 20, 1917. The address follows: "Ladies: Friends from far and near, on behalf of the Women&apos;s Entertainment Committee of the A. I. M. E., I extend to you a hearty welcome. "Most especially are we glad to see our friends from the Pacific Coast and the middle West, .whose royal hospitality to the members of the A. I. M. E. and their wives and daughters on their trips to California and to the Copper Country of the Southwest can never be forgotten. We are glad to be able in some small measure to return it.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp. is located approximately 900 km southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36 to 46 kt/d (50,7055tpd). The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02-0.4% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite. Pilot plant testing conducted during 1970 at Toquepala, Cuajone&apos;s sister plant, determined that the recovery of the molybdenite into a salable concentrate could be accomplished relatively easily by using the Asmol process. Experience gained at Toquepala, which converted to Asmol in 1969, confirmed the simplicity of process. Simplicity of operation was one of the major criteria for the process selection because, at the time, it was expected that the molybdenite plant would start up concurrently with the copper concentrator. Other processes studied either produced inferior results or were judged more difficult to operate. However, geological information indicated that the molybdenite content of the ore would be relatively low for the first couple of years of operation, so the design and construction of the plant was delayed until after the copper plant was in production. Asmol remained the process selection. During 1976 and 1977, the flowsheet and plant layout based on pilot plant data, new results obtained from Cuajone&apos;s metallurgical laboratory, and process improvements from Toquepala&apos;s experience were completed. One of the more important innovations from the Cuajone laboratory was that the Asmol consumption could be substantially reduced by replacing air with nitrogen gas in the rougher and first cleaner flotation steps

A visitor to the Republic of South Africa might profitably make his first sightseeing objective the Voortrekker&apos;s Monument at the administrative capital, Pretoria. Here he will find memorialized in sculptured stone the epic of the migrations of Dutch colonists from the Cape in search of new pastures and to escape British rule. He will see depicted the battles with the Bantus who were coming south also in search of habitable land, the peace treaties with great chiefs and the rise of Afrikaaner leaders. An American will be struck by similarities in events with his own history as well as in clothes and in type of covered wagons of the colonists. Before the latter half of the 19th century, little that transpired in South Africa was of any great international moment. The country had not attracted a great many settlers (about 15,000 Europeans in 1800 compared to about 2 million in the American colonies in 1776). Although some gold was being mined the majority of population was engaged in trade or subsistence farming.
