The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. Tantalum metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involwing high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals 6ecome brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element colum-bium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum-columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen-containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides; one of the authors undertook4 an investigation of the thermochemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exo-thermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the Drocess should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonly made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. The Atlanta Mine is located in east central Nevada, in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the old mining town of Pioche. From this famous district, high-grade copper ore was mined and shipped to a smelter in Wales in the 1850s; an early day lead blast furnace was also in operation. The Standard Slag Company began operations in May 1975 on the well known Atlanta Mine, which was operated by Roy Hardy in the 1930s. The mill is currently processing 450 mtpd (500 stpd) of gold-silver bearing ore. Mining by open pit is in a brecciated zone occurring between limestone-dolomites on the foot wall and tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia is considered among the most abrasive in the world - shovel teeth must be replaced every week. Stripping ratio is 3.9 to 1.0. Because of the hard abrasive ore, the crushing plant consists of four units: two jaw crushers in series, one Hydrocone, and one Gyradisc. Mine feed to the primary crusher is limited to 610 mm (24 in.) in size. The remaining crushers work in closed circuit with screens to produce a mill feed of 6 to 13 mm (0.25 and 0.50 in.). Hardness of the ore is demonstrated by the fact that the reversible liners of the primary jaw crusher had to be replaced in early 1978 after handling only 39,000 mt (44,000 st) at a cost of $0.095 per mt ($0.086 per st). Another example of the extreme abrasiveness of the breccia ore was the total cost per ton in 1977 for all wear parts in the comminution circuit, including screens and grinding media. This amounted to $2.84 per mt ($2.58 per st). The Atlanta grinding plant consists of three ball mills to grind the 7 mm (1 /4 in.) crushing plant product to 85 to 90% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Feed rate to the primary Tricone mill is determined by maintaining a cyclone overflow at 28 to 38% solids, which controls the grind mentioned above. A mixture of 90 and 65 mm (3.5 and 2.5 in. ) balls are charged to this primary mill. Both the secondary mills are charged with 50 mm (2 in ) balls. Total ball consumption is 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st). All three ball mills use rubber liners. Primary mill cyclone underflows are fed to the secondary mills close circuited with the same cyclones.

WHEN a mine is changed from hand, to me-chanical loading, the character of the coal dumped at the tipple is changed in many ways. Selective mining is not so easy with mechanical load-ers, and where much picking is done at the face it is apt to be wasteful anyway. Much recoverable coal is apt to be lost by too free gobbing and, in my opinion, picking at the face should be confined to removal of heavy rock, such as pieces of roof or bottom or sulfur balls. and to such clearly defined and persistent bands as can be readily recognized and segregated. With mechanical loaders of the shovel type, even this amount of gobbing is almost impossible. When coal is shoveled into a conveyor there should be no difficulty in doing as much picking as now by hand loading. The size of lumps may be greatly increased, on ac-count of the ease of handling them with a shovel, as the miners will not break them up in order to lift them into cars. Fines may be increased. This is, of course, not universally true, yet it is my opinion that a shovel breaks the coal more, as a rule, than hand loading. This might not be true with all types of shovels and is cer-tainly not true with a conveyor, either with or without the "duck-bill." The average car load will be greatly reduced in fields such as Illinois and Indiana, in which it is the practice to build up the coal above the sides. Where "level full" regulations prevail there should be no material change. When the coal comes to the tipple these differences usually result in the discovery, that many changes are necessary in the preparation plant. The increase in the percentage of fine sizes will probably not bother the screen, but may overload the conveying apparatus. The larger size lump may clog the chute, but as a rule the efficiency of the sizing screens is not greatly affected. In one completely mechanized mine the proportions of 6-in. lump and 2-in. screenings, when loading by hand, were 16.9 and 51.3 per cent respectively. When loading mechanically, these proportions changed to 15 per cent lump and 53.5 per cent screenings. The picking force on the tipple has been increased from 14 on hand loading to 33 men on mechanically-loaded coal. This is for an output of about 5000 tons.

The papers discussed in the following pages were presented during two sessions of the Geophysics Education Committee of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Feb. 17 and 18, 1941. At the first meeting, to consider the "Influence of Geophysics upon Geology Curricula," this Committee was joined by the Geophysics and Mining Geology Committees of the A.I.M.E., the Society of Economic Geologists, representatives of the American Geophysical Union, and delegates from the Committees on College Curricula and on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Quentin D. Singewald and Sherwin F. Kelly presided. At the ensuing session, especially emphasizing the integration of geology, physics and chemistry for the solution of earth problems, the joint participants with the Geophysics Education Committee were the Geophysics Committee, and representatives of the American Geophysical Union and of the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Richard M. Field and W. R. Chedsey presided. In the following summary of the discussion at the two meetings, written discussion submitted subsequently is not differentiated from that offered orally at the session. A provisional report of the Geophysics Education Committee was presented at the second session, and some of the following discussion refers to it. This report has not been printed (it is anticipated that a more comprehensive, final one will be rendered at the 1942 annual meeting), but a few mimeographed copies of this provisional report are at the A.I.M.E. headquarters and will be mailed on request. . Dr. W. P. HAYNES presented some notes prepared by Dr. F. H. LAHEE, Chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Committee on College Curricula. This Committee's inquiries reveal the general opinion that a four-year academic preparation is inadequate, five or six being advisable. The fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English composition, should be stressed in the first three years, with specialization in the last two or three years. Some companies provide an apprenticeship period, and themselves give additional training.. During academic years more attention needs to be given to engineering training, to field mapping, and in geology to stratigraphy and sedimentation. The amount of mere memory work should be cut, and men trained to observe and reason. Dr. Lahee emphasized the need of more adequate preparation in English composition, because of the inability of many graduates to compose acceptable reports. SHERWIN F. KELLY pointed out that much time in university training, which ought to be devoted to technical subjects, was taken up with English courses. He emphasized that it is the part of the universities to demand of the high schools that the students they send to the university be properly trained to speak and write English. Prof. W. T. THOM protested against the crowding of high-school material into already overcrowded college curricula. C. E. DOBBIN, chairman of the Committee on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, described briefly the work of his committee in publicizing geology, and said that it found a widespread popular interest in the subject but a lack of appreciation of its importance. He recommended that attempts to coordinate the works of geologists and geophysicists be expanded somewhat, toward the further developing and encouraging of a "species of geopolitician" capable of assisting the progress of geology and geophysics by more vigorous advertising of

A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 1 1/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude. The primary thought at the time millisecond de- lays were introduced was to investigate the results on rock breakage by firing a line of holes in a quarry face.so that charges in adjacent holes would not be detonated simultaneously. This could not be accomplished satisfactorily with regular delays. The time interval between successive periods of $5 to 1 sec was sufficient to permit considerable movement of the burden. If the burden of one hole was reduced to a great extent by the firing of an adjacent hole, the firing of the hole with the reduced burden would likely reveal this lack of confinement by a terrific report and wild throw of rock.

The Telfer Project, one of the world's newest gold mines, is located about 300 km (190 miles) northeast of the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the northern part of Western Australia. The first mineral claims were staked in 1972; and by mid-1975 ore reserves of 3. 8 million mt (4. 19 million st) of 9.6 g per mt (0. 28 oz per st) ore had been indicated. It is interesting to note that Newmont spent more than 10 years and A$10 million in Australia for extensive mineral exploration before finding the Telfer deposit, and then spent approximately A$3 million in exploration and feasibility engineering on Telfer. Including this A$3 million, a total of A$27 million was spent to complete construction of the mine, village, gold treatment plant and associated roads, airport, water and services. Over 50% of the capital cost is in the metallurgical facility, or approximately A$10, 000 per ton per day. All economically significant gold mineralization at Telfer occurs in a series of layered quartz-limonite reefs in which the former pyrite has been oxidized to limonite to a depth of 100 m (330 ft). The most important gold reef occurs at the base of the siltstone-shale horizon within the enclosing sandstone dome -like structure. At the Main Dome structure the dipping ore horizons will be mined to a vertical depth of about 60 m (200 ft) by open-cut methods. The waste-to-ore ratio is approximately 12:1. Eventually 44 million mt (48. 5 million st) of ore and waste will be mined. Mining of the waste is by contract; however, the ore and a thin layer of waste is company-mined. Dilution from mining the geological ore reserve is about 10%. The ore is completely oxidized and the gold occurs free within the reef, material as discrete particles of varying but mainly fine grain size. Most of the gold is "free milling"; that is, over 50% of the gold is coarse enough to be recoverable by gravity concentration. Two duplex mineral jigs receive the two cyclone underflows from the grinding circuit. The rougher jig concentrate is up-graded on a continuous strake from which the concentrate is tabled to produce a final free gold product. Jig tailings are returned to the ball mill and the concentrates are amalgamated. Gold amalgam is pressed, retorted, and melted into gold bars. The gravity gold recovery circuit is the same as was used in many of the gold mills in California in the 1930s.

The extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, some losses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 11/2 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Sometimes in large producing wells, with heavy gas pressure, some water may come in with the oil, particularly if the well has been drilled to the top of a water sand. Under these conditions, cut oil is often produced, which, if not settled out, is carried over into the steel tanks. The losses by leakage in steel tanks are difficult to determine, for

This order of business may be changed at any meeting, by a vote of a majority of the Members and Associates present. At all sessions of the Institute, other than business meetings, the order of proceedings and the time of adjournment shall rest in the discretion of the presiding officer. III. SECRETARY OF THE INSTITUTE. The Secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings of all the meetings of the Institute. He shall be custodian of the corporate seal, of the minute books and of all the legal documents belonging to the Institute. He shall have charge on behalf of the Institute of all correspondence. He shall notify all Officers and Directors and all members of committees of their election and appointment; shall issue notices of all meetings of the Board, and of the annual and other business meetings of the Institute; and shall, in calling special meetings of the Directors, specify the objects of such meetings. He shall act as clerk at all the meetings of the Board of Directors and at all meetings of the Institute. The Secretary shall be custodian of all technical or scientific papers submitted to the Institute for its consideration and shall have general charge and supervision of the editing and proof-reading of all material published by the Institute, and of the distribution thereof. SALT-WATER disposal in the East Texas field by means of injection into the Woodbine sand is a relatively new procedure. The purpose of this paper is to present what has been accomplished to date in this field, with-out detailed discussion of other means of disposal, such as surface impound-ing for evaporation or release into surface streams. Subsurface disposal of salt water is still in an experimental stage in the East Texas field, and, though water can be injected into the Woodbine sand, the economic problem is not as yet solved. As past experience has been that fields producing from the Woodbine formation produce large quantities of salt water, it was assumed early in development of East Texas that it would be necessary to dispose of a tremendous quantity of salt water in the later periods of production. There has been a gradual increase in the amount of salt water pro-duced in the field, until at present it is about 200,000 bbl. per day from approximately 4400 wells. It is only natural to expect an increase in the number of wells producing water, as well as the amount of water produced in the future, and it has been estimated that if present practices con-tinue the production of salt water may ultimately be as much as 700,-000 bbl. per day. The Woodbine sand is found in the East Texas field at an average depth of 3650 ft. The oil-bearing portion of the sand lies between the depths of 3050 ft. below sea level, on the east edge of the field, and 3320 ft. below sea level on the west, which depth was the estimated original average oil-water contact. The Woodbine sand under the field has the form of a broad tilted wedge pinching out on the eastern side of the field and dipping gently into the East Texas Basin toward the west. The Woodbine sand in the East Texas field has an average porosity of approximately 25 per cent and is highly permeable, the average being about 1300 millidarcys.

Reservoir pressure is the pressure at which a fluid is held in a state of equilibrium in a porous stratum. This pressure may be a result of the genesis of oil or gas and its subsequent migration into and through an adjacent porous stratum, or of hydraulic head. Reservoir pressure is an indication of the potential energy contained in the reservoir, and when it is known the engineer is in a position to use it to advantage in recovering and lifting the oil. It is important to know the pressures in any type of reservoir, but this knowledge is probably of greater value in a limestone reservoir, as at Hobbs, where producing rates or conditions may be more sensitive to changes in pressures. The Hobbs field is in east central Lea County, New Mexico. The discovery well was completed by the Midwest Refining C I. in 1928, but intensive development did not begin until after the completion by the Humble Oil and Refining Co. of No. 1-A Bowers in February, 1930. There are 143 producing wells on approximately 5500 acres. The field has not been defined to the northwest, but a projection of structural contours indicates that the productive area ultimately may cover 7500 acres. The producing horizon is the White or Crystalline lime of Permian age. The top of the lime is found at an average depth of 4000 ft. and the wells penetrate it an average distance of 200 ft. The main pay zone is an oolitic stratum about 25 ft. below the top, and varies from 2 to 15 ft. in thickness. Other porous or cavernous strata are found lower in the lime but have little saturation. The initial production varied from 100 to 25,000 bbl. per day, depending perhaps to some extent on the structural location but chiefly on the porosity of the pay. The initial gas-oil ratio varied from 325 to 16,000 cu. ft. per barrel. In wells where the top of the White lime was found below 350 ft. below sea level (Fig. 1)) the gas-oil ratio was usually less than 1500 cu. ft. per barrel, while in wells higher than 350 ft. below sea level, the ratio was usually above 2000 cu. ft. per barrel. The water table has been determined at about 620 ft. below sea level, by three wells on the west side of the field. With few exceptions, the wells have been completed with 7-in. casing cemented

AMONG others, one of the most important duties of the accounting department is to disclose to the management the cost of production accurately and as quickly as possible after the ore has been produced and treated. A report is issued daily showing man shifts and the cost of labor, supplies, power, and miscellaneous charges to each department of the operation: mining, crushing, milling, packing and loading, and general expense. Mining costs are broken down into stoping, handling, development, exploration, and miscellaneous, and each of these subdepartmental costs are further broken down into the branches making up the subdepartment. Costs of crushing, milling, packing and loading, and general expense are detailed in the same manner. With such a detailed daily report as this, the management is able to keep in close touch with the efficiency of the entire operation. Because no expense items are deferred or spread over a period, and so that the report does not lose its comparative valve, appearances of unusual charges are explained.

THE character of the Wisconsin orebodies must be clearly understood to appreciate the difficulties encountered in sampling and estimating them. Unlike the western vein deposits, they do not lie between regular walls, but form large, often highly irregular bodies, on a single floor in the so-called Galena limestone. The bottom of the ore is nearly always on the clay bed, a flat generally well-defined clay seam a few inches thick, which marks the junction of the base of the Galena lime and the top of the next formation, the Trenton lime. Above the clay bed, the orebodies make the unique pitch and flat formation described by Chamberlin.1 Theoretically, we should find two pitches, one on either side of the top crevice, diverging as they go down, with the final flats a considerable distance apart on the clay bed. The area between, known locally as core ground, should thus constitute a single defined orebody, with the richer portions near the pitches and the leaner portion in the center of the core. Practically, we find few examples of this perfect orebody. Almost invariably one pitch is better defined than the other, and often the opposite pitch is marked only by a faint line of fracture showing stronger mineralization than the wall rock, or it may be totally lacking. But with an orebody of any size or richness, at least one strong pitch usually tends to follow an east-west trend, or a quartering course. Late mining developments in the rich New Diggings field indicate that these pitches often assume a horseshoe or crescent shape, the richer ore being in the heart of the crescent and the pitches showing less mineralization as they extend outwards. In the northern end of the field, on the contrary, the pitches maintain generally a consistent direction, and have been mined for thousands of feet from the shaft. The length of the orebody may be several thousand feet, the height varying from 10 to 60 ft. and the width from 60 to 250 ft. In fact, on the core side, there is no definite end to the ore. The mineralization simply gets thinner and thinner, and the limit of working depends on the cost sheet and the profit from the recovery.

Iodine is a soft, lustrous, grayish-black non- metallic element with a density of 4.9. It is the least active of the four members of the halogen family. The other members are, in order of increasing activity, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Iodine is a solid at ordinary temperatures, while bromine is a liquid and chlorine and fluorine are gases. Iodine melts at 113°C and volatilizes at 184.4°C to a blue- violet gas with an irritating odor. It occurs in nature only as iodates and iodides or other combined forms. It was discovered by Bernard Courtois in France in 1811, who noticed its presence as an unknown substance in crude soda ash obtained from burning seaweed. Gay-Lussac recognized it as a new element and named it iode, from the Greek word "ioeides or iodes" for violet color (MacMillan, 1970). The world production is not known with any great certainty, but it is probably between 20 and 25 million lb per year, of which about 25% is consumed in the United States. Geology and Mineralogy Iodine compounds occur as a minor constituent as a mineral in the Chilean nitrate deposits and in solution in brines and sea- water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. The minerals lautarite, Ca (10,) (calcium iodate), and dietzeite, Ca, (10,) , (CrO,) , (calcium iodate-chromate) are found in Chilean nitrate deposits which are located in Antofagasta and Tarapach provinces on the eastern slope of the coast range in a desert area. Various brines contain iodine compounds. Seawater contains about 0.05 ppm of iodine and some seaweeds will extract and accumulate it up to 0.45% on a dry basis. Some coals in West Germany also contain iodine compounds. The known and potential sources of iodine reported in 1968 are given in [Table 1]. Iodine has been recovered from brines in Java, Indonesia, France, England, and the USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. The indicated re- serves and future resources of iodine are large but have never been adequately measured. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable.

The development of production in West Texas during the year 1933 was largely confined to the expansion of proven areas, especially Ward County, Iatan and North Winkler. Wildcat activity was at a comparatively low ebb and resulted only in discoveries of probable minor importance in Ector County. The interest shown in deep wildcatting to test beds of pre-Permian age was a new development, which should soon throw light on the possibilities of deeper production from the present producing fields. The important pre-Permian tests of the year were: 1. Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., Todd No. 1, a unitized test, in north central Crockett County on a probable continuation of the Big Lake trend. The well encountered several showings of oil and penetrated an Ordovician section very similar to the productive zones at Big Lake, but was abandoned when sulfur water was encountered at 8041 feet. 2. Gulf Production Co., McElroy No. 103, in the McElroy Field, Upton County. The well was drilling at 8553 ft. at the close of the year in beds of probable pre-Permian age. The test is an important one because it should prove or disprove deep production in the Church-Fields-McElroy pools and also throw geologic light on the deep possibilities of other fields in the western part of the Permian Basin. 3. Humble Oil and Refining Co., White and Baker No. 1, in Pecos County, about 11 miles west of the Yates field. The well is on a nonproductive Permian high and should indicate the deep possibilities of the Yates field. At the end of the year, drilling had progressed to 7200 ft., where beds of pre-Permian age are believed to have been penetrated. The major fields in West Texas, in which present-day proration had its inception, were produced under increased restrictions. A date of importance in the proration history of the area was $ept. 8, 1933, when the Railroad Commission issued an order placing all producing wells under proration. The severe reductions in total outlet made during 1933 were well compensated for by a more than threefold increase in the price of crude oil. Acid treatment was one of the general engineering developments of interest. The work had not progressed sufficie~ltly at the close of 1933

"Power is transmitted to Butte, a distance of 130 miles, over two separate lines running parallel on the same right of way.The transmission line embodies the most approved ideas in construction. The conductors are No. O. B. & S. gauge, hard drawn copper strand. The insulators are of the suspension type, each insulator consisting of six units, 10 inches in diameter. The insulators will stand a wet test of over 300,000 volts, and were selected after long and careful tests by the company's engineers. The wires are carried on steel towers of four-legged, single crossarm type, manufactured by Milliken Bros. The three conductors are suspended in a horizontal row from the crossarm, and there are no transpositions in either line. Above the power wires and symmetrically located are two galvanized steel strands, Vs-inch in diameter, grounded at each tower, which serve as a protection against lightning.The distance between towers in level country is 600 feet. In mountainous country, however, the spans are irregular in length and spans of 1,500 or 2,000 feet are common. The longest one in the line is that crossing- the Missouri River and is equal to 3,034 feet. The length of this span is such that a person standing at one end of it can sec the wires go off and vanish into space, while the tower at the other end is barely visible to the naked eye on a clear day. The theory of a zonal deposition of ores from ascending solutions which were differentiation products of a cooling magma, first propounded by Spurr,l in a measure explained by Lindgren,2 and recently re-emphasized by kemp,3 while perhaps accepted in principle by many mining geologists, so far has not been accepted as capable of practical application in the study and development of ore deposits. From his observations, the writer is convinced that there are laws governing the primary deposition of ores which, when properly worked out, will be of greatest economic value; and that the application of this knowledge to the development of new mines will mark an advance in the mining industry similar to that following the working out and application of the theory of secondary enriehiment. That there has been a tendency to a zonal distribution in the formation of ore deposits, by which the ores of one metal have been precipitated from tile mincralizing solutiolis at a greater distance from the source than those of another, cannot be disputed; and the nature of this zoning in a given deposit or district has been frequently described.4 But that a selection precipitation of the ores of two or more metals, other than lead and zinc, in successive zones may have taken place in a single deposit within limits economically possible of exploration is not generally recognized or admitted.

ENGINEERING students to the number of 73,269 had been enrolled in United States and Canadian schools on Nov. 5, 1945, but, as shown in the following tables, even this sizable number will not greatly remedy the 150,000 deficit reported by Vannevar Bush, director of the U. S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, to exist in the engineering and scientific man-power supply. These figures were received in advance from the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, and are given in detail in the January 1946 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education. Although the enrollment on Nov. 5 was an increase of 76% over the low of 41,632 in 1944-45, it was still 36% below the peak enrollment in 1941-42 of 115, 228. These figures include both undergraduate students and graduate students in the schools of the United States and Canada and are therefore comparable. As was to be expected, almost half of this enrollment is in the first or freshman year and 25% of the total are veterans. Also, 1,850, or about 2.5%, are women. A measure of the seriousness of the engineering graduate supply in these two countries is indicated by the trend of the number of first degrees that have been conferred during this period of scarcity:
