AT THE beginning of a Henry M. Howe lecture it seems fitting to refer to Howe's great contributions to steel metallurgy, and particularly to the literature thereof. Most of my predecessors in this role have been able, from their association with him, to give direct testimony as to his great services; but although connected with him for years in a business way, I am less familiar with what might be called his academic side, except as .it is embodied in his utterances, written and oral. Howe was adept in his genial way in extracting information in any line which, at the time, was of interest to him. In a technical lecture one expects as a rule new knowledge-something about recent advances relating to the subject. On this occasion, however, I will ask you to go back with me to the primary department of steel lore, as the title of my lecture shows, to review the more fundamental features in that field for the purpose of seeking some gaps which we can fill and so give the subject renewed interest. In thus going back one must inevitably repeat many familiar facts, but that seems to be necessary in order to reach a clear understanding of the unrecorded matters. The full interpretation of a steel analysis is at present unattainable, though much progress toward that end has been made. The ultimate analysis, giving the percentages of the five commonly determined elements, does indeed usually give a fair idea of what the steel is, and is ordinarily enough, with knowledge of its history and physical condition, to enable it to be assigned to some purpose or use for which it is reasonably suitable. But discrepancies arise. Every maker and every user of steel knows, from at least occasional examples in his own experience, that the ultimate analysis is insufficient by itself to enable one to tell positively, from its interpretation, either the mechanical properties of the steel or its adaptability to the purpose for which it was made. Further, if, while having the specified composition, it is abnormal or unsatisfactory, why it is so. Good, bad and indifferent steels may have substantially the same ultimate analysis.

Selecting efficient machinery for an underground mining operation is a highly skilled art that still depends largely on human judgment and experience. In a coal mine, for example, there is no better way to predict the results of operating with a cutting machine or a continuous miner than to go underground with a sharp-pointed miner's pick. The trained eye can detect the depth of point penetration, cleavage planes, roof and floor strata, and many other conditions impossible to determine in a laboratory. Even so, however, an entirely new set of conditions may lie unexposed just a few feet behind the solid face. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from a solid. Consequently, the selection of mineral extraction machinery and systems must be based on results obtained elsewhere under apparently similar conditions. A recent study of the problem of equipment and system analysis was conducted in the coal mining regions of West Virginia. This state was chosen for study because it afforded representative sampling. The 172 coal mines investigated ecompassed seam heights ranging from less than 30 in. to over 84 in. and covered virtually all known coal mining conditions except two. The exceptions are the extreme pitch of coal seams in the western United States and British Columbia and the "bumps" encountered in the Rocky Mountains. Both of these extreme conditions are worthy of individual study.

The formation of a monovacancy in a metal is simulated in an elastic model by the displacement of the surface of a small spherical cavity in a large elastic continuum. The application of linear elasticity to this distortion results in a well- known formula for the energy and an expression for the concomitant entropy change due both to the shear strain in the continuum and also to the dilation of the solid resulting from the boundary conditions at the surface of the solid. Elastic data (the sliear modulus and its temperature coelficient) are used to calculate the entropy and energy of formation for many metals. Despite the simplicity of the assumptions involved, the agreement between the calculated entropies and energies and experimental values is remarkably good. In recent years there has been a large increase in measurements of the absolute concentration of mono-vacancies in metals as a function of temperature. Hence new data for both the energy and the noncon-figurational entropy of formation of monovacancies has become available. Recent measurements&apos; of the anomalous (non-Arrhenius) self-diffusion in many bcc metals has also focused interest on the prediction of the thermodynamic parameters of mono- and multi-vacancies in those metals for which no data are available. Damask and Dienes&apos; have discussed the various theoretical calculations of the energy of formation EL, of a monovacancy. These include simple models involving the breaking of atomic bonds on moving atoms from the interior of a crystal to the surface, models combining elastic calculations with surface-energy terms and detailed quantum mechanical calculations. The simler models give the correct order of magnitude of &, but tend to overestimate it by a factor of about two. The quantum mechanical calculations4"7 have been carried out for the noble and alkali metals with generally reasonably good agreement with the available Ef data. The calculation of entropy of formation Sfv14 lnvolves a fundamental calculation of the perturbation of the phonon spectrum caused by the creation of a vacancy. Huntington, Shirn. and wajda8 have given an approximate evaluation of sJV by considering an Einstein model for the localized vibrations in the immediate neighborhood of the defect and then using elastic theory to calculate the entropy associated with the shear stress field in the distorted crystal (as originally proposed by Zenerg). They also included a term due to the dilation of the crystal. They obtained a value of 1.47k for copper, in good agreement with the experimental value (1.50k). However, Nardelli and Tetta- manzi1° have recently shown that neglecting the coupling between atoms (Einstein Model) may lead to a serious error so the agreement may be somewhat fortuitous. In this work simple linear elastic theory is used to calculate the entropy and energy of formation of mono-vacancies. Despite the simplicity of some of the assumptions involved, the agreement with the available experimental data is remarkable. However. the reasonable degree of success in the application of linear elastic calculations to the excess entropy of a solute atom in a dilute solid solution1&apos; indicates that the application of elastic theory to vacancies. where the interaction of different atomic species is not involved, may not be inappropriate. THE ELASTIC MODEL The metal is assumed to be a spherical elastic continuum. A small spherical cavity of volume V = 4i;v:&apos;/3 is cut from the center. removed. and dissolved rever-sibly in the bulk of the material. Virginia, a store-house of metals, is more and more a surprise to the present generation. With her enormous available mineral wealth, worked upon steadily for over a century, exploited SUEciently to demonstrate beyond question costs and values, reported upon by our most eminent scientists, written up by thoroughly earnest correspondents, we yet find her little understood by capitalists or practical men, and until very lately overlooked by the advanceguard of pioneers in metallurgy, whose restless energy conquered the wilderness of Northern Michigan years ago, and has written a new and startling history for almost impenetrable Western territories. The world is learning through the mouths of giant furnaces lately put in blast at Lowmoor, Goshen, and Roanoke, more of this wondcrful State. It is becoming plain that nearer home, amid all the surroundings of civilization, under an equable climate and with the advantage of a minimum cost for fuel and labor, there are stores of mineral, varied in character and deposited over a wide area, which exceed all ordinary calcnlations. Principal among these minerals, iron ores have been, and will probably continue to be, the leading product and the source of greatest revenue. My attention has been called during the past year to one particular section of the iron-belt, where for forty years charcoal-furnaces were successfully operated, the ores being mined in open pits, as can so frequently be seen from the Connecticut line southward into Georgia. There is, however, a significant peculiarity in the character of these deposits of Louisa county warranting special mention, as it is thought that nowhere on the earth&apos;s surface, within so moderate a distance of tidewater, can their like be fouad. Natural carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxide. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inorganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercial production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of fumaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mcxico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid curbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. Introduction Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. GILBERT Coal producers are not only faced with the problems of mining coal, but must also decide to what extent they can invest capital and what operating and maintenance expense they can afford, after mining, to market their product in sufficient volume and at a reasonable profit. Regardless of whether the operator is contemplating a new operation or merely considering expanding present facilities, market requirements, ability to make a product meeting requirements, probable costs and possible future changes in raw coal or finished product must be considered. In addition, such items as flow sheet, structural designs, storage facilities, etc, must be examined individually and collectively. In estimating preparation costs to meet predetermined market specifications, the operator must calculate the economics of present preparation practices to anticipate the increase to total production which results when the quality of the finished product is increased. The consumers of coal are continually seeking to obtain the best and most adaptable product for their money. Regardless of whether coal is used for coking, industrial requirements, electric power generation, domestic fuel or for other purposes, it will be scrutinized from such standpoints as delivered cost, suitability for utilization in certain equipment, ease of ash disposal, adaptability to material handling system plans and its potential for generating dust problems. Utilities, due to large capacity volume requirements, are generally in a position to select coal that will result in the lowest over-all cost per million Btu. Freight costs, paid by the utility, are important and are given utmost consideration when a coal is under consideration. Steel companies, whether producing or purchasing coking coal, are continually seeking coal that will result in lowering the cost of pig iron production. Since it is usually necessary to clean to lower specific gravities, say 1.40, to turn out a product meeting metallurgical requirements, it follows that a high ash "middling" product is created. These low quality middlings do not command a good price. Therefore, unless the metallurgical coal can command sufficient realization to carry or subsidize the middlings, the operator may be ahead economically to prepare steam coal at a higher specific gravity. While the "unit-train" rate reductions have been helpful to the economy of the coal industry, the establishment of these rates has made mandatory the installation of storage and rapid car loading facilities at mines and plants shipping utility coal (see Chapter 15). Many Americans will judge the energy crisis by the picture shrink on their TV screen. And they are right to make this assessment considering the large areas of the country with marginal generating capacity, (See Fig, 1). The Federal Power Commission (FPC) recommends 20-25% reserve generating capacity above peak summer loads and 15-20% as minimal. The New York metropolitan area is the most concentrated power service area in the United States, and a spot check with Consolidated Edison, serving this area, revealed that on Friday, August 18, the company was operating at 5% reserve.

In 1871, two furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, which had been blown out on account of the "coal strike," were altered from the open-top plan with side flues for collecting the gas, to closed tops with cup and cone. In one furnace the suppression of the side flues permitted a considerable alteration in the profile, but in the other (No. 5) no change in this respect was made; the side flues were simply bricked up and new ones cut through the sides close to the top. This furnace was in blast over four years, and we can, therefore, form a pretty good idea of the effect of the alterations on the furnace process. The principal dimensions are; Height 72&apos;; greatest diameter, 18&apos;; diameter at tuyeres, 8&apos;; diameter of top, 10&apos;; diameter at stock line (point at which the top of the materials is kept), 11&apos;; cubic contents, 11,900 cubic feet. The table below shows the average results for periods of twentysix weeks each. 1st, of the open-topped furnace; 2d, of the furnace with the first charger used, which was an ordinary cup and cone (diameter of cone 5&apos; 2") 3d, with the charger used ever since, a " double " cone 7&apos; 5" diameter outside, having a central opening 3&apos; in diameter. The diagram (Plate 11) shows the daily variations, in the grade of the irons for the same periods.*

The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation&apos; of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. The crystalline belt of the Atlantic Seaboard, south of New York, attains its maximum breadth of 220 miles on the northern border of North Carolina; arid in this State it is most widely characterized by the occurrence of gold in workable deposits. Exploration in 1955 was marked by a trend toward large-scale programs using a number of geophysical techniques. These programs were initiated both to locate new mineral districts and to bring individual prospects into production. All 14 companies replying to the author&apos;s questionnaire include geophysics in the general exploration routine whenever it is applicable, and five companies carry on extensive geophysical programs. Nearly all report that company personnel perform the surveys. In addition to these firms there are the many smaller operators who contract much of their geophysical work. There are indications that the volume of such contracting is sizable.

The war emergency has affected every phase of industry. The gas and coke-oven companies have sought faithfully to discharge their responsibility in this critical period and have willingly modified their operations where possible to meet the ever increasing demands made upon them. Our company made commitments for blast-%urnace coke for war purposes which necessitated a reduction in coking time in order to produce the amount required to meet the new demands. At the same time there were certain customers of long standing, who had been supplied with foundry and egg-sized coke produced on fairly long coking periods, who also were engaged in war work and whose patronage we desired to retain. Coke produced on short coking rates from the coal mixture we were then using would not have been satisfactory for these customers. The average width of our ovens is 19¾ in., which is a little wider than the more modern ovens of the present day. They were originally designed to give somewhat cool tops in order to produce a rich gas. This necessitates carrying the heats a little on the warm side so that the tops will be fully carbonized. A reduction in coking time, as is generally known, is accompanied by a reduction in the average size of the coke produced. This is due to the greater shrinkage that takes place at the higher temperatures required to carbonize the charges in a shorter time. The net result is that the coke is more cross fractured and longitudinally fractured and breaks up into small sizes on handling. The cokes produced from the better coking coals seem to be more susceptible to fracture at high temperatures than those from poorer coking coals. A coal mixture that produces a beautiful foundry-sized coke at 30 to 36 hr. may yield a product at 18 hr. that would be so badly fractured as to be unsatisfactory for foundry practice. Coking Characteristics OF Coals Our problem was to find some economical innovation and develop a method that would enable us to reduce the coking time and still produce a coke satisfactory to our foundry trade. However, before discussing the results of our present operations, it might be well to present a few observations on the coking characteristics of coals in general. Most coke-oven operators carbonize a blended mixture of coals. It may consist of a single high-volatile coal with a single low-volatile coal, or of a combination of several high-volatile and low-volatile coals. Medium-volatile coals of the Eagle seam are used for the production of high-grade foundry coke. Medium and high-volatile coals are often blended with one or more low-volatile coals. The possibilities are almost infinite, but the combinations are limited by such factors as cost and facilities for handling multicoal mixtures, and by other practical considerations. Every coal has characteristics that make it blend better with a particular coal or coals in preference to others. This property has

This chapter is written primarily from the standpoint of development of flotation processes for treatment of specific ores. However, most of the principles and techniques discussed are equally applicable to other forms of applied flotation research such as improvement of procedures in existing plants and development of new reagents or methods without reference to specific ores. Because it is not possible to cover this subject in detail here, much of the material presented is in the form of a guide to the literature, with emphasis on readily available, English language publications. Details are included only if considered to be widely applicable or not readily accessible in the literature. Related subjects which are covered elsewhere in this volume, such as flowsheet design and statistical techniques, are not emphasized in this chapter. The material presented is intended primarily for those familiar with the theory and practice of flotation, but with limited experience in applied flotation research. It may be of value to the experienced investigator as well, by calling to his attention some useful viewpoints or techniques that he may have overlooked. It has often been said that flotation is more of an art than a science. In- deed much of the knowledge of flotation behavior is empirical. However, the unsystematic, artisan approach to flotation problems results only in an ac- cumulation of unrelated data. Like any other physical or chemical process, flotation is amenable to investigation by systematic experimental methods. The experiments should be based, as far as possible, on an understanding of the natural laws that govern the process and on good experimental procedures. SAMPLING OF A DEPOSIT In working out a flotation process for a mineral deposit, no step is more important than that of obtaining a suitable sample or samples. Experimental procedures cannot compensate for the lack of a representative sample. Methods of sampling a deposit have been published elsewhere,l-4 but a few points are of special importance from the standpoint of flotation. First, the sample should be representative of the deposit, not only in respect to chemical composition, but also in respect to mineralogical composition and degree of dissemination of the valuable minerals. Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years. By ignoring all but the relevant characteristics of a process, a mathematical simulator may be constructed which, when fed operating data, should react as the process would. The output becomes numbers, instead of tons, however. Thus, a trial-and-error operation of such a simulator will permit management to study a major system change at little cost.

Before covering the separate methods used in mining geophysics, it may be well to mention some current basic geophysical prospecting concepts. As in most fields, a better understanding and means of studying these fundamentals usually provides the more common improvements, rather than new principles being discovered. The relative detail and complexity of most mining geology often results in the use of geophysics in problems it cannot solve. On the other hand, suitable applications are often ignored or left unrecognized. To minimize this, it is important to consider geophysics as a phase, or additional tool, in geological or exploration engineering.

The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc. and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the `New Missouri Lead Belt&apos;. Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated 1100 ft below the surface at an elevation 270 ft above sea level, the flat lying sinuous orebodies are up to 250 ft wide, 85 ft high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite.

The boiler from which these stay-bolts have just been obtained was that of the locomotive Catasauqtia, Lehigh Valley Railroad, built at the company&apos;s shops, South Easton, Pa., in 1864. The iron is Lowmoor, and has been in use nearly ten years. The stay-bolts have become highly crystallized from some cause, and are very brittle, only requiring three blows of an ordinary machinist&apos;s hammer to break them. On the other hand, when annealed they are remarkably tough, as shown by the doubled sample. The majority of the broken bolts were found to be along the curve of the shell from a to c, Fig. 6. All of them were broken just inside the shell, and in no case next the fire-box. The fractures seem to have been of slow procedure, beginning at the top of the bolt, gradually working deeper and deeper until the pressure of steam overcame the tenacity of the remaining parts. Unequal contraction and expansion of the parts of the boiler seems in this case to be the only existing cause for a fracture. We cannot, from the data obtained, prove to an absolute certainty the manner in which the combined forces generated by the unequal contraction and expansion of the parts have arrived at their resultant work ; but we can, from these data and from existing circumstances, arrive at what seems to be a fair supposition, and thus at least anticipate the truth. The contraction and expansion in locomotive boilers has a large range between its extremes, and is very variable, both with reference to time and to their component parts. The shell and fire-box do not, perhaps, at any time, contract and expand at the same rate, nor proportionally; but, on the contrary, owing to the great changes in temperature that take place both in the atmosphere around the shell, and in the fire in the fire-box, their condition is often changed suddenly, and widely from that which they just previously had. IN the oil-refining industry, steel comprises by far the greatest proportion of the materials used in construction work, but with an enormous number of alloy steels and nonferrous alloys available, and a greater knowledge of their properties and corrosion resistance, a substitution first in the "hot spots" and then in locations of moderately severe corrosive conditions will be made as the greater expense can be justified. In new construction work, advantage is taken of the experience already gained and appropriate materials used, whether for high temperatures and pressures demanding additional strength or for corrosive conditions. The locations, however, where equipment in operation constantly requires replacement will soon become evident, as will the necessity for replacement in more resistant materials, if considerable down-time is to be avoided. In what direction and how far to go in the matter of alloys then becomes a question of the highest importance. Obviously, any replacement with more costly material must be justified economically by the promise of longer life, thereby saving both material and installation costs besides the reduction of loss of production. Where the equipment is overcapacity and a regular schedule of cleaning periods is in force, the last item frequently must be ruled out and justification made on the basis of the first two only. Installation of material that will outlast the remainder of the equipment and have no recovery value must also be avoided; this is particularly important in temporary construction or in old equipment that will soon become obsolete. TEST METHODS Either one Of two methods or a combination of both, in the absence of reliable data in similar services, may be adopted to determine to what extent replacement with other, and perhaps more expensive, materials is justified. A unit may be constructed incorporating different metals or alloys so that comparative service may be obtained under the same service conditions; this has been applied in many instances, such as condenser and tank construction, but the opportunities for inspection may be few and
