IN his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Wark1 makes the following sig-nificant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of col-lector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater impor-tance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a col-lector, and even without any reagent, pro-vided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism. 1(127),3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirm their results.

A considerable quantity of experimental hydrocarbon K-factor data has been correlated as a function of component identity, temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. To utilize these correlations effectively, convergence pressure must be determined accurately, particularly for volatile mixtures near their critical states. This paper presents phase diagrams that illustrate physically the meaning of convergence pressure. A new method, referred to hereafter as the "critical composition method", will be outlined for calculating convergence pressure. An example calculation has been included to illustrate how to use this new technique. INTRODUCTION The principle of hydrocarbon phase composition calculations as applied to such diverse problems as optimizing separator performance or predicting fluid compositions at various stages of reservoir depletion is the same. Usually, temperature, pressure and the numbers of moles of the various components of the fluid contained in a given volume are known. Questions answered by the phase calculation are what fraction of the total mass of fluid exists in each of the equilibrium phases, and what are the mole fractions of the various components in the two phases? To answer these questions the Natural Gasoline Supplymen's Assoc. (NGSMA) has correlated a considerable quantity of K-factor data as a function of temperature, pressure, component identity and convergence pressure.l To use these correlations to obtain the best answers possible, one must be able to calculate the convergence pressure. This is particularly true for over-all fluid compositions in the neighborhood of the critical state. STATEMENT OF THEORY Use of convergence pressure as a correlating parameter is based on a postulate similar to the law of corresponding states used in correlating PVT data of hydrocarbon gases. This postulate, which proposes convergence pressure as a correlating parameter, has been stated as follows: "The equilibrium vaporization constant for one component in a complex system is the same as the equilibrium constant at the same temperature and pressure for the same number or kind of components, providing only that the convergence pressures of the two systems are exactly the same at the same temperature and that the components are of the same homologous series".2 This law, as with all laws of physics, cannot be proven theoretically. It can only be justified by experimental data supporting its premises. Arguments have been made that this law violates Gibb's phase rule. For example, consider a four-component system. By Gibb's phase rule, which is thermodynamically rigorous, f = c — P + 2 =4, for a four-component, two-phase system. Thus, four independent intensive variables must be specified to establish completely all the intensive variables of the equilibrium phases. On the other hand, according to convergence pressure theory, only three variables need be specified for any mixture containing four different components. These variables are temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. Thus, the two laws appear to be in conflict. However, the convergence pressure postulate is more restrictive than Gibb's phase rule. It applies only to mixtures of the same homologous series. Hence, these two concepts are not in disagreement. A consideration of the literature shows the inadequacy of Fick's Laws to describe the diffusion of hydrogen in steels below 400°C. These laws are modified an the assumption that hydrogen is delayed at fixed sites in the lattice. Approximate and exact solutions of the resulting nonlinear system are derived for simple geometrical shapes. The results qualitatively account for the observed anomalous behavior. Experimental methods for verifying the theory are suggested. 1 HIS paper presents a new analysis of the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in steel based on a physical model which supposes that hydrogen atoms wander in a random manner through the crystal lattice, but tend to get trapped or delayed at certain fixed sites uniformly distributed throughout the metal. These sites, which will be called traps, are regarded merely as potential wells of significantly greater depth than those encountered in regular regions of the crystal lattices and no assumptions are made concerning their nature or origin. The results of experimental studies of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron and steel have usually been reported in the literature in terms of a diffusion constant D derived under the assumptions that the hydrogen concentration C is governed by Fick's laws.1 Fig. I is a composite of published graphs of the man. ner in which the values of D, so derived, vary with temperature. It is convenient to consider this material in two categories; the high temperature results above 400°C, and the results at lower temperatures. The graphs 2, 3, 4, 5 in the first class lie within a factor of three of each other and are relatively consistent compared with the low-temperature values. There is an increasing divergence in values of D with decreasing temperature till at room temperature they are spread over three orders of magnitude. Small values of D have been obtained for work-hardened specimens.' It is evident that D is a function of other variables besides temperature in this range and that these neglected variables are in some way connected with the work hardening experienced by the specimen. In view of evidence for an interaction between hydrogen in solution and dislocations9'10 and adsorption on crack surfaces,' some doubts must be entertained about the validity of Fick's laws and their associated physical model of noninteracting particles in random motion through the medium. More direct evidence of their inapplicability to the diffusion of hydrogen in steel was first produced by Darken and smith." The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

Oil burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coa1 fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.

Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Although the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time. All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. The Gamma-ray Curve The measurement of gamma-ray intensities is accomplished by means of an ioniza-tion chamber that consists of a heavy cylinder, about 3 ft. long, that contains two insulated electrodes and is filled with an inert gas under high pressure. THERE have been many attempts at permanent roof support in anthracite mines, in some cases brick arches, in others concrete, and also combinations of brick or concrete walls with steel beams. These supposedly permanent roof supports have frequently failed when heavy pressure is brought to bear upon the structure, because they are so rigid that failure occurs because the structure is unable to adjust itself to the increased load. Roof pressure exerts a tremendous weight, and it is at times difficult to find any means of support which is strong enough to bear the entire pressure, unless this supporting structure has in itself the element of some flexibility which will enable the structure to hold the moving mass until it "arches" itself. If the supporting medium has flexibility enough so that it can adjust itself to the heavy initial loads, and so give the overlying material an opportunity to form a self-supporting arch, then such a roof support will be more useful than any rigid roof support. There has recently been introduced into the anthracite region a new form of gangway lining that is flexible enough to slightly adjust itself under heavy pressures, and so give the loosened material which is being supported a chance to form into an "arched" mass. This lining, manufactured under patents granted to Hans Schaefer of Essen, Germany, was introduced in the United States in the summer of 1928, at which time the Amercan licensee, Richard Howells of

OVER the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.1 The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and, are so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when arc-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking. tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. Evaluating the permeability of a caprock overlying a potential gas storage reservoir is a very critical problem. Pumping water from the reservoir can be used as an evaluation tool in analyzing this problem. Fluid level changes that occur in the aquifer us well as in the caprock can be measured with appropriately placed wells. If the leakage of water from the caprock into the aquifer is considerable, the effects will be apparent in the aquifer. If the leakage is slight, however, it will not be possible to detect it with certainty from observations in the aquifer alone. Fluid level measurements in the caprock must be relied upon. and improved methods of analyzing such effects have been developed which are based on a theoretical analysis of fluid flow through a caprock of infinite thickness. An example applying these methods to field data is discussed. INTRODUCTION One of the most critical problems in evaluating an aquifer gas storage project is determining the tightness of the caprock overlying the formation to be used as the storage reservoir. A formation that has previously held oil or gas obviously has a suitable caprock, but an aquifer that contains only water gives no such assurance. A number of aquifer projects in the United States have been troubled by gas leaking out of the intended storage zone, and the ensuing difficulties have led to the development of new evaluation methods. One of these new methods is pump testing wherein water is removed from the aquifer at some controlled rate prior to injection of gas. This fluid withdrawal causes a pressure drop to move out through the aquifer for considerable distances in a matter of days or weeks. Depending on the properties of the caprock, a pressure transient can also pass upward (as well as downward) through the caprock layers adjacent to the aquifer. Thus, if the operator has placed observation wells at appropriate distances from the pumping well, the rapidity with which the pressure transients reach different points in the system can be used to investigate the fluid transport properties of both the aquifer and its caprock. The usefulness of pump testing has been recognized by groundwater hydrologists for many years as a means of determining the potential yield and properties of aquifers used in water supply They have introduced the term "leaky aquifer" for a system in which an aquifer is overlain (or underlain) by semipermeable caprock layers. The ease with which water leaks into the aquifer during pumping can, of course, be very beneficial in bringing additional water to the pumped well. Hydrologists have therefore devoted considerable attention to this prob-lem. From the gas storage standpoint, however, the tighter the caprock layers that overlie the intended storage reservoir, the better are the conditions for minimizing or eliminating any vertical migration of gas. Thus, after a suitable geologic structure has been found, the emphasis in aquifer storage projects is in determining that the caprock is tight. Attention has recently been focused on the use of pump testing as one approach to solving this problem.23,24 This paper presents a further development on evaluating the permeability of a slightly leaky caprock when the caprock is of infinite thickness. From the practical standpoint, this means that the caprock layers are thick enough that pressure transients do not reach the outer boundaries of the system during the pumping test. In a subsequent paper, an analysis of the case where the caprock is of finite thickness will be presented. PREVIOUS WORK ON LEAKY AQUIFERS Jacob" developed a partial differential equation describing the flow of water in an aquifer of permeability k that is overlain by a leaky caprock of permeability k'. Fig. 1 shows a schematic cross-section of the system under consideration. One of his principle assumptions was that if k > > k', the direction of flow is essentially vertical in the caprock and horizontal in the aquifer. Neuman19 confirmed the validity of Jacob's assumption using a mathematical model. Another assumption was that a permeable source layer overlies the caprock (Fig. 1) and is able to maintain a constant hydraulic head at the upper boundary of the caprock. By neglecting the effects of compressibility within the caprock, Jacob1* developed a solution for a bounded circular aquifer. Later, Hantush and Jacobx5 used the same assumptions to solve the case of an infinite radial aquifer that is pumped at a constant rate. J. E. Harris (Berkeley Nucclear Laboratories, England)—Greenfield et al.11 attribute abrupt changes in slope of their log o/log i curves for heat-treated Mg/0.5 pet Zr alloy (zA) to &apos;atmosphere&apos; locking. It is proposed here that a more reasonable explanation of the apparent strengthening at low rates of strain can be based on precipitation either during the preanneal or during the creep tests. All the tests were carried out above 0.5 Tm where solute atmospheres are likely to be largely evaporated2 and can migrate sufficiently rapidly so as not to impose any &apos;drag&apos; on the moving dislocations. McLean3 has derived an expression for determining the temperature Tc above which, due to the high-migration rate of the atmospheres, Cottrell or Suzuki locking can play no part in determining creep strength. This expression, which holds for an applied shear stress of not greater than 5 X 107 dynes per sq cm is: Tc/Tm= 7/6.8 - log10? where i = secondary creep rate The values for T, corresponding to the maximum and minimum reported creep rates at each temperature have been calculated from the data of Greenfield et al. These are given in Table VII. All the test temperatures were above T,, the margin being greater for the higher temperatures and for the lower strain rates where the breaks in the log s/log ? curves occurred. Dorn and his collaborators14, 17 have studied systematically the effect of solute hardening on the creep properties of an A1/3.2 at. pet Mg alloy. In the temperature range where strain aging occurred in tensile tests, abnormally high-activation energies for secondary creep were obtained but at temperatures above 0.43 Tm, solute alloying did not have any effect on the creep parameters. Moreover, there have been no reports of any strain aging phenomenon during elevated temperature tensile tests with ZA material.18 Instead of the observed strengthening being due to atmosphere locking, it is now proposed that precipitates play an important role in enhancing the creep strength of the material. There are two possibilities—precipitation of zirconium hydride during the high-temperature preanneal and/or precipitation of the hydride or a-zirconium during creep. On the basis of the former the results can be interpreted in terms of a critical stress being necessary to force the dislocations through or over preexisting precipitates. From the latter, if the strengthening is due to pre- cipitation during the test then hardening should be associated with a critical strain rate. At low rates of strain, time is available during the tests for precipitation to occur either directly onto dislocations (thus pinning them) or generally throughout the matrix (which would impede dislocation movements). Examination of the data of Greenfield et al. suggests that both mechanisms may be operative since they observed precipitation during creep and also found that their alloys exhibited high-creep strength in the early stages of the low-stress tests, i.e., before creep-induced precipitation had time to occur. It is not easy to understand why they considered that precipitation of zirconium hydride is unlikely to occur at 600°C while it can take place in tests in air at as low a temperature as 200°C. Precipitation of the hydride during the preanneal cannot be ruled out merely on the basis of metallographic examination. Hydride precipitates in ZA type alloys are very small and can only be accurately resolved in the electron microscope.9 For example, in this laboratory20 hydride platelets with major dimensions <(1/10) µ have been observed by electron transmission through thin film specimens of hy-drogenated ZA material. Complex interactions between dislocations and such particles are illustrated in Fig. 12. Additional evidence for precipitation during pre-annealing is provided by the data presented in Greenfield&apos;s Fig. 1 and Table IT. These show that the creep strength at 200o and 400°C increases with the time of preanneal at 600°C. Such increases cannot be explained on the basis of increases in grain size alone for further improvements in strength were observed when the material was annealed for longer times than that required to stabilize the grains. Although the main discussion is confined to ZA material, similar arguments can be used against the strain aging hypothesis proposed to explain the binary Mg/Mn alloy data. In this case no precipitation is possible during the preanneal, but precipitation-hardening during creep can occur.

The basic principles and assumptions involved in D. L. White&apos;s solution5 for ultrasonic wave amplification in piezoelectric semiconductors are summarized. If the gain per unit length is maximized at each frequency without regard to the drift-field power density, the gain increases linearly with frequency. Therefore it would seem that very high gain is possible for frequencies in the hundreds of megacycles. However, with present materials the resulting drift-field power density is so large that cooling would be a major problem. For this reason it is more realistic to judge the capabilities of an ultrasonic amplifier in terms of the gain that is possible with a specified power density. In this case the gain at high frequencies does not increase but decreases more rapidly than l/f. The calculation of the gain us frequency at a fixed power level involves the repeated solution of a cubic equation and is therefore tedious. For the purpose of comparing different materials, sufficient accuracy can be obtained from an approximate solution which may easily be plotted as three straight lines on logarithmic graph paper. This method is used to compare the Performances of CdS, CdSe, ZnO, and GaAs. At a power density of 10 watts per cu cm, the first three give maximum gains of 60 to 80 db per cm in the vicinity of 60 megacycles. At the same power density, GaAs has a maximum gain of about 7 db per cm near 150 megacycles. Although an increase in mobility usually increases the gain for a specified power density, it is shown that there is an optimum mobility above which the gain decreases. An approximate expression for the optimum mobility is established. It is well-known that the interaction between charged particles and an electromagnetic wave can be used to amplify the electromagnetic wave. In the conventional traveling-wave tube, electrons in a vacuum are caused to move at a velocity slightly greater than the wave velocity, thereby coupling energy into the wave.&apos; In principle, the same effect would be evident in a solid except that repeated collisions prevent the electrons from attaining a velocity greater than that of an electromagnetic wave. However, the drift velocity of electrons can be made to exceed the velocity of an acoustic wave in a solid. In 1956, weinreich2 noted that the deformation potential provided one means of coupling energy from drifting electrons into an acoustic wave, but the effect was too small to be of any practical importance. It was not until 1961 that White and Hutson demonstrated that the piezoelectric effect provided a strong enough coupling to give appreciable amplification of an ultrasonic wave and awakened wide interest in electron-phonon interactions. Qualitatively the effect may be described as follows. An acoustic wave propagating through a piezoelectric material is accompanied by an electric-field wave. If the vibrations are properly oriented with respect to the crystal axes of a piezoelectric semiconductor, the local electric fields are axially directed and cause bunching of the charged carriers. If the drift velocity of these carriers is less than the velocity of sound, they tend to be dragged along by the acoustic wave. This electroacoustic effect results in a net potential appearing across the material and in attenuation of the acoustic wave. On the other hand, if the drift velocity exceeds the velocity of sound, energy is coupled from the carriers to the acoustic wave and amplification results. Related effects which are being investigated include ultrasonic amplification in semimetals6-&apos; and semi-conductor, and current saturation in piezoelectric semiconductors.&apos;4-17 There are various problems which hinder the immediate application of ultrasonic amplification in a practical device. First, there are the traditional problems encountered in the design of acoustic delay lines: attenuation in the electromechanical transducers, reflected waves (which can lead to self-oscillation in an amplifying device), mechanical tolerances necessary to maintain phase coherence, and so forth. Second, there is the problem of selecting the best material from among the various piezoelectric semiconductors as they become available in single-crystal form with a wide choice of characteristics. In the investigation of the magnetic properties of iron-nickel alloys,&apos; it was found necessary in order to make the alloys forgeable, or malleable, to add small quantities of some other element. Iron-nickel alloys have been known for nearly a century, but have been made in commercial quantities only since 1885. Their remarkable mechanical properties were disclosed by Riley in 1889 and from that time on a large amount, of research work has been done both to discover new properties and to correlate the results obtained.2 Lately the Bureau of Standards has collected the published data in a special circular" giving in compact form an account of the properties of the iron-nickel alloys. It also contains a clear historical sketch of the development as well as a selected bibliography. The chief difficulty with the development of iron-nickel alloys was that the "pure" alloys do not forge readily. The addition of small amounts of manganese, however, made the alloys forgeable, and manganese has therefore come to be regarded as a necessary constituent of nickel steels. The present paper shows to what extent manganese is needed for various nickel contents and also what is the effect of other alloying elements on the forgeability. It also touches upon the cause of forgeability but refers to other sources for more exhaustive treatises on the subject. The alloys were prepared by melting electrolytic iron and electrolytic nickel with or without other alloying elements in the desired proportions in a magnesia crucible in a vacuum furnace under a pressure of 1 mm. mercury. (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Stow&apos;s paper presents a series of arguments, numbered from 1 to 18, concerning the relative merits of four systems of colliery-ventilation, designated by the author as " plain pressure-ventilation," " plain exhaust-ventilation," " obstructed pressure-ventilation," and " obstructed exhaust-ventilation." These arguments are subsequently compared by means of tables, in which an arbitrary numerical value is assigned to each, and which consequently serve no other purpose than that of showing his opinions and predilections, as indicated by his assignment of the said numerical values. In addition to this general summary, Mr. Stow intimates his preference for a fifth method of colliery-ventilation—namely, what he calls " alternating pressure-ventilation," which consists in the running of the fan at "pressure " during working-hours, and as an " exhaust" between shifts—a system which he proposes as, perhaps, new, yet which he thinks deserves recognition " as a standard form." This proposed " standard form " is not to be found in practice ; and I think it would be impracticable in gaseous mines of large extent, for the following reasons: 1. It takes considerable time to reverse the air-current in a large mine; and the reversal would involve a period of complete stoppage of ventilation, long enough to permit serious accumulations of gas. 2. In shaft- and slope-mines, at least, it is hardly practicable to have " every man out of the mine" during the night, and certainly impracticable to avoid keeping mules and horses inside. 3. It cannot be said that this whole subject is a new one in respect to its presentation to the Institute, but the minute discussion of it has been looked upon as lying more strictly within the field of study of the societies which have to do chiefly with the construction and management of machinery as such. It must be true that the importance of close limits in steam-economy is as fully recognized among the members of this Institute as by any body of men who have to do with steam-machinery. In all directions, nevertheless, among manufacturers as well as among metallurgists, there may still be found those who do not give the same attention to exact methods in fuel-consumption as devoted to steam, as to other technical uses which, to say the least, are not more important. The study of the most efficient methods of use of fuel in operations which are more strictly metallurgical has been long-continued, and in some directions nearly or quite exhaustive. This has led to a rather close bringing-up, in those particulars, all along the line of technical work, of the establishments (and their managers) which had lagged behind. Yet, in the steam-departments of those works, there are too many reasons for believing that the name may still be legion of those whose methods and results are far from the best. If there be room in any given case to suspect any imperfect working or waste of fuel in the steam-supply, the search for the evil, the clear fixing of its cause, and the application of the remedy are, or certainly ought to be, too obvious in their pressure for attention upon a manager to call for even so scanty a mention of them as can be accorded in this paper. It is natural that men should be incredulous as to imperfections which may be noted as existing in their machinery or methods. Still more are they likely to be altogether disinclined to admit that there may be thus an actual and palpable leakage in the compartment of their money-drawer devoted to coalsupplies. THE property of the United Comstock Mines Co. lies in the eastern foot-hills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the Washoe mining district of Storey County, Nev. Commencing at the boundary line between Virginia City and Gold Hill, covering all the town of Gold Hill, it extends south to American Flat; the main camp, or the new town of Comstock, the mills, shops, residences of employees, and the main haulage-tunnel portal are located on American Flat. The property extends for about 10,300 ft. along the lode; this covers the southern end of the main Comstock lode, the Knickerbocker branch, and the junction of the Silver City branch with the Comstock lode. Within the property, 5000 ft. of the main Comstock lode is known to have been productive, 1000 ft. of the lode at the northern end of the property is thoroughly developed, and 1000 ft. south of this is partly developed; this leaves about 3000 ft. of the known productive portion that has not been opened up by this company. The northern end of the property, or the Imperial mine, has been intricately developed by five main levels and numerous sublevels. The Yellow Jacket ground to the south has been partly developed by the reopening of three old levels. In addition, the main haulage level is driven from the portal at Comstock for 9250 ft., to the north end of the property; about 5500 ft. of this `is in the foot wall of the lode and parallel to it.

THERE was a time when the selection of fire brick was .left to the judgment of the head bricklayer of the plant, whose choice was not unaffected by a box of Christmas cigars from a friendly salesman. But the days are past when it was generally believed, with complacent philosophy, that bricks were bricks without much distinction, and should be bought on a price basis alone. Gone, too, is the belief that in certain types of industrial work the eventual failure of refractories was assured. Modern metallurgical practice, with its trend toward handling larger tonnages at higher temperatures, demands the use of refractories that cannot be supplied by random guess. The logical development is to inquire into the properties of the brick to be purchased, and this resolves itself into the use of specifications. In 1925, the General Refractories Co., with the active support and hearty cooperation of some of its larger customers, established a laboratory, at its Baltimore plant, for testing and research in refractories. This was the outgrowth of a growing appreciation of the value of research in the refractory field. Since then the work has become more involved&apos; and the aims more ambitious, so that the present laboratory now employs a staff of 11 men working, under the direction of trained refractory technologists, on problems of research as well as the routine control of manufacture. It is believed s that `this type of laboratory is a comparative novelty among refractory manufacturing plants. It handles the testing and research work for all the 15 plants of the organization. Being at one of the works has the advantage of making it possible to carry on large scale plant tests on new products after the preliminary laboratory tests have been successfully completed.

THE use of natural feldspathic rocks, as opposed to straight feldspar, for ceramic purposes is not new. "Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been made on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent ceramic grade.
