The clay particles of 2 microns or less required for modern paper coating are predominantly flat plates, lying smoothly on the sheet and producing a high gloss. Operating speeds of today's coating machines necessitate a clay composition of 60 and sometimes 70 pct solids as against the 35 to 40 pct required in the past. Since clays in suspension may solidify in flow, only those of intrinsically low viscosity can be used as high coating solids. THE literature of paper technology contains a number of articles having reference to developments in the field of coating and filler clays for use in paper manufacture. Much of this information has not been included in mining publications and has therefore not been readily available to all in the mineral industry. Recent developments in this field, including spray drying of clays, are presented here. U. S. Bureau of Mines figures for 1952 indicate that the paper industry consumes more than 50 pct of all kaolin produced and sold in the U. S. As most of the kaolin used by the industry comes from Georgia producers, the fraction of their output destined for paper use is thus appreciably higher than 50 pct. Small wonder that the kaolin industry, especially in Georgia, is highly sensitive to the quality requirements of paper mills and must respond promptly to technological developments in paper manufacturing. The paper industry itself is not the ultimate consumer. For the greater portion of the clay the end product is the printed page, and the demands of printing and publishing have sparked some of the technological advances in paper making which have, in turn, brought about methods employed in the kaolin industry. As compared with the product of 20 or 25 years ago, one of the most striking characteristics of the graphic arts today is the mass production of quality printing of fine pictorial work, much of it in full color. During this time periodicals with printing standards close to those of yesterday's slick-paper publications that were printed on a slow schedule and for a limited circulation have grown to the point where they go out to many millions of readers, often at weekly intervals. The complexity of technological improvements brought about by this increased circulation is probably not appreciated even by technical people, unless they have had reasonably close contact with the industry. The advance has come about through developments not only in the art of printing, but also in the field of paper making and even at the level of clay mining and processing. The smoothness required for faithful reproduction of the kind of printed matter under consideration is attained with a clay-coated paper. Since the distribution expense of the publication will depend to a great extent on its weight, the paper used must not be too heavy. This means a lower basis weight than was normal for conventional clay-coated papers some 25 years ago. And for this mass production market it becomes necessary to provide a paper having these and all the other required characteristics at a very moderate price—not the premium price conventional clay-coated papers formerly demanded. This challenge has been met by a new method of producing coated paper. In the past, application of clay coating to paper was a conversion operation, performed separately from the making of the base sheet. The newer development is called machine coating. Here application of the coating is an integral step in a continuous process by which wood pulp, clay, and other ingredients are manufactured into a sheet of coated paper. Many more problems are involved in this procedural change than are apparent at a casual glance. The coating operation, for example, must function at much higher linear speed than could be obtained with coating mechanisms previously employed. The application machinery developed to meet this requirement necessitated changes in composition of the coating color.* This created new requirements, summarized below, for the clay employed as coating pigment. In addition to smoothness, a relatively glossy printing surface is needed, and to a large measure it is the function of the coating clay to make possible the development of both these surface characteristics. Traditionally, pigments such as satin-white, prepared by reacting lime with paper-makers' alum, were used to assist in producing a high finish. However, economic considerations and others preclude large-scale use of such material in the new processes. Single crystals of Ta-Re alloys have been deformed in tension and compression as a function of solute concentration and temperature. The temperature dependence of the yield stress is decreased by alloying. At low temperatures there is a minimum in the yield stress (at about 2 at. pct) as a function of concentration. Three-stage hardening was not observed in the alloys. Linear hardening rates, where observed, were characteristic of stage II in pure tantalum. At low temperatures and high concentrations, work softening was often prominent at high strains. Electron microscopy revealed that dislocations are mostly of screw orientation, although heavily jogged and cusped, and often occurring in dipole pairs. The alloys become more prone to cleavage with increasing rhenium content, due mostly to an increasing yield stress rather than a change in cleavage strength. Alloying apparently decreases the Peierls stress of bcc metals at low temperatures by facilitating kink nucleation at solule atoms on screw dislocations. Higher solute concentrations further increase the yield stress. Quantitative calculations and comparisons with other bcc alloy systems are made to show that the predominant hardening mechanism is due to the interaction of dislocations with misfitting solute atoms close to their slip planes. The interaction is so localized that the core dilatation of dislocations could be important. CONSIDERABLE interest has arisen in recent years concerning the mechanical properties of unalloyed bcc metal single crystals.'-7 These and similar studies on polycrystalline materials have resulted in a considerable understanding of the macroscopic yielding characteristics8, 9 and the process of work hardening.'' This latter advance is due in a large part to the increased use of transmission electron microscopy in P I RAFFO junior Membar AlMF is Metallyureist Iewis such studies and the general observance of three stages of work hardening in the shear stress-shear strain curves. The properties of substitutional alloy single crystals of bcc metals have not been determined in as much detail as in the pure metals. Insufficient systematic studies have been made on the effect of alloying on the magnitude and temperature dependence of the yield stress or the stress-strain curves. The alloy systems which have been studied to some extent have been Ta-W,11, 12 Ta-Mo," Ta-Nb,12'14 Mo-Re,15 W-Re,16 and alloys of iron with nickel,17 platinum,17 vanadium,18 and aluminum.18 A large body of data exists on Fe-Si alloys, but these have mainly been a result of the experimental convenience of using this material in place of unalloyed iron, rather than a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties of the alloy system per se. The present authors have previously reported additional data on the properties of Ta-Re, Ta-W, and Ta-Mo alloy single crystals.1g Some of the data on Ta-Re alloys will be described later in this paper. Briefly, single crystals of Ta-Re (1.2 to 10.6 pct), Ta-W (6.2 and 10.2 pct), and Ta-Mo (2.9 and 9.0 pct) were grown by the floating zone method in vacuum. Compression tests were performed in the temperature range 77" to 623°K. Slip was found to occur in Ta-Re alloys at 77' and 298°K on the (~ll)[lil] system and slip lines were coarser and straighter than in unalloyed tantalum. No three-stage hardening was observed in any of the alloy systems and the curves were nearly parabolic. At temperatures above 175°K the yield stress* increased monotonically with in- creasing composition while at 77" and 175°K the yield stress initially passed through a minimum after which it began to increase again for concentrations greater than about 2 pct Re. Similar minima were observed in Ta-Mo alloys and to a lesser extent in Ta-W alloys. The minimum was interpreted as being a result of a

The most effective means of controlling the dust in the drilling of rock has been found after careful investigation to be collection of this dust at the source. By direct collection, all the dust is collected at the collar of the drill hole and deposited into suitable containers. Equipment for handling this work can be either portable or stationary, depending upon the particular requirements and the application. For most work the portable unit is found most advantageous, and with a capacity capable of handling two drills operating simultaneously. Such a portable unit would consist of a metal cap, or hood, placed against the face of the rock through which the drill steel would be inserted. This hood is connected by a flexible rubber hose to a primary separator, where the bulk of the dust is collected. From here a second length of hose connects to the secondary stage of separation, where the fine particles of dust are collected and which is built in as an integral part of the vacuum producer. Hoods are adapted for vertical, horizontal or stope drilling, and mounted so as to become immediately effective when collaring the hole and remain in place continuously. Such dust collectors can be used with either wet or dry drilling. However, in view of the fact that when drilling dry and using the dust collector, the dust count can be maintained within safe limits, wet drilling becomes unnecessary. Furthermore, it has been found that when using the dust collector not only has the dust hazard been eliminated, but also increased footage can be obtained. Samples taken under a wide variation of conditions indicate that where the dust count required is below five million particles per cubic foot, dust collectors will be required. Opreators, in general, accept the use of this additional equipment favorably, and it is generally felt that such means of collecting the dust will soon be universally adopted. Tests made by the Connecticut Department of Health Bureau of Occupational Diseases show dust counts reduced from 203 million particles to 6.05 million by the use of the dust collector, when drilling dry.

Available high-fernperatzwe equilibrium measurements and other thermochernical data have been critically reciewed for sulfation reactions of the type: Recommended values for log K and ?Fo as junctions of temperature are given for thirty-six suck reactions involving twenty-six different metals. Methods of calculation and choice between conflict-ing data are discussed. SELECTIVE sulfation now enjoys a considerable renaissance as a metallurgical unit process due, in large part, to the available of the fluid-bed re- actor—a device capable of the close control of temperature and gas composition necessary for a successful sulfation process. An additional need, however, if sulfation chemistry is to be approached in a scientific manner, is a reliable body of data on the equilibrium and kinetics of sulfation reactions in simple and complex systems. This paper offers a critical review and compilation of equilibrium data on pure sulfates (simple systems). The last such review, by K. K. Kelley in 1935:30 has proven itself most useful, but the existence of many new data makes necessary a re-evaluation of the available information. The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the Isabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test-runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the three-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 2. The authors feel that the 22 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mil1 speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds. Obviously, rod and liner consumption could not be determined for each mill speed in so short a time. The rod load was maintained at a uniform level throughout the series of tests. The authors have operated rod mills at various speeds over the past several years, and it is their observation that rod consumption is directly proportional to the mill speed. Likewise, that the rod consumption per unit of work performed is a constant, providing that all other operating factors remain the same. When Agassiz and his party of geologists commenced their exploration of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon region, one of the first and, to the last, one of the most novel and striking phenomena which met them everywhere was the great depth of decomposed or partially decayed rock in situ, which mantles, and for the most part conceals, the underlying strata. The same facts strike all geological observers from the North who happen to penetrate the middle and southern latitudes of the Atlantic States. A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

P. L. Jones (Sink and Float Corp., New York)—The comparisons between galena and ferrosilicon medium should be applied only to the specific sink-float process used at Mascot since no evidence is presented that allows the comparison to be extended generally to galena medium as now used in other forms of sink-float. It is stated that flotation recovery of galena medium was tried but was unsuccessful and therefore the elaborate gravity system of medium recovery was applied. The expense of the gravity system at Mascot was one of the reasons for changing to ferrosilicon. However two important sink-float plants treating a combined total of over 13,000 tons of ore per day are using flotation to clean galena medium most successfully and are obtaining medium recoveries comparable with those reported in the paper for ferrosilicon. Slightly increased zinc recovery is claimed due to the change-over but it is to be noted that at the time of the change a decreased density differential was obtained in the separator. IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

A detailed description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner, M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,³ it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. † The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Tacenite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with inter-bedded slate layers. :'paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers inter- bedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. Stripping Practice Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer, In- the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of paper. and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges Will have to be absorbed.

Experimental results are given for the rate 0.f solution of nitrogen in y iron in the temperature range 1000° to 1200°C. It is shown that, when purified reacting gas is used, the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The difhsiuity of nitrogen in y iron is calculated from the results and the equation logD = —(8800/T) — 0.04 is recommended to represent the temperature dependence of the diffusivity. In some experiments using unpurified nitrogen, solution rates are found to be slower than those attributable to a solely solid-state diffusion process. Indications are that in the presence of impurities in the gas, e.g., H,O, chemisorption of nitrogen at the surface is hindered and becomes a rate-controlling process for the transfer of nitrogen across the gas -metal interface. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in y iron at known nitrogen activities has been well-established,'-a the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in iron are not known. The work of Darken, Smith, and Filer' indicates that at temperatures below about 1300°C the rate of solution of nitrogen in y iron is controlled by a chemical reaction at the metal surface, while at temperatures above about 1300°C the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. Fast and verrijps studied the denitro-genization of y iron using wet hydrogen at 950°C and their results clearly indicate that the rate of nitrogen removal is controlled by diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. In Part I of this series of papers, the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in y iron are discussed in the light of the present experimental work. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The reaction chamber consisted of a platinum wire-wound resistance furnace with a re-crystallized alumina reaction tube. The temoerature of the furnace, which was automatically controlled to approximately 1°C, was measured with a Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and a potentiometer. The temperature distribution in the working zone of the furnace was determined using a calibrated Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and the hot zone was found to be approximately 3 in. long with a temperature variation of * 3°C. A series of experiments was also carried out at 1000°C and pressures above atmospheric using a pressure vessel which was similar in construction to that described elsewhere.1° Materials. Until recently, the universal practice in New Zealand was dry-crushing and direct cyaniding. With ores containing no mineral sulphides, and little or no coarse gold, 'this method, in spite of its many disadvantages, gave excellent results, and was by far the best one available, pending the solution of the slimes-problem. But the situation has now been changed. The successful treatment of the slimes, enabling the mines not only to do away with dry-crushing, but also to deal with the mineralized ores of the lower levels, which are, for obvious reasons, quite unsuited to that method of treatment, has made wetcrushing universal; and this may be taken as satisfactory proof of its superiority over the former practice. Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation-process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves. Following the usual South African practice in pebble milling, Union Corp. grinds the ore wet in two or three milling stages incorporating classification. The sized broken ore used as grinding media is separated from the main ore stream in the crushing section that prepares the ore for milling. Where the ore channel, or reef, is narrow there is a shortage of large pebbles. In this case primary grinding may be done in ball mills or, more recently, in rod mills, which cost less per ton to operate. The trend, however, is to prepare finer feed for the milling section. This makes it possible to use smaller primary pebbles and eliminates the need for steel. REDUCTION WORKS OF UNION CORP. LTD. Union Corp. Ltd. exercises financial and technical control over a group of seven gold mines in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. In the Transvaal, with one exception. the mines lie 20 to 40 miles east of Johannesburg, in flat or gently rolling countryside. Winkelhaak, the first of several new mines that will be developed by Union Corp., is located in similar terrain in an entirely new gold mining district about 80 miles east of Johannesburg. Table I gives details of milling units for six of the Union Corp. mines, together with the tonnage milled in 1957. Winkelhaak Mines Ltd. is not included, as it did not begin milling until 1958. This reduction plant has no crushing section; ore is ground directly from the mine (autogenously) in 12x16-ft mills. Because these operations are still in development, they are not described in this article. It will be noted that certain reduction works have mills of more than one size in the same milling stage. This came about when plant extensions in- corporated larger units. In the case of Geduld Propty. Mines Ltd., which began milling operations 50 years ago, the primary stage is stamp milling. The reduction works follow a uniform pattern and are usually joined to the main ore shaft. Ore from other shafts is brought by standard-gage railway and dumped into a common transfer bin. The trend is to increase surface storage capacity to enable the crushing and milling sections to operate at a steady rate, independent of fluctuating ore deliveries from mine. Milling and cyanide extraction divisions of new mines are always designed to allow for extensions as mine production increases. The conveying, washing, and screening system of the crushing section is usually laid out in final form, with additional space for more crushing equipment. The crushing sections operate on one shift during early years of mine production; a second shift is introduced when the mining rate warrants it. Ample surge capacity is provided. Crushing and milling is done only on weekdays, as the law does not allow these operations to take place on Sunday in any plants constructed since 1911. The cyanide extraction sections, however, operate continuously seven days a week, drawing on mill pulp gradually built up in the thickeners during the week. Construction and equipment of milling plants follow standard practice. Dilution water is drawn from a large, high-level tank to obtain constant pressure, but gland service water for the pulp pumps is reticulated from high-pressure, two-stage pumps. The mills are equipped with the most up-to-date machinery and are designed to save labor. They compare favorably with milling plants in countries where native labor does not exist, and automatic controls are being installed wherever feasible. Hydrocyclone classifiers have replaced mechanical classifiers in modern milling plants, chiefly because of the saving in capital outlay, maintenance, and building space. The hydroclones are fed from steady head boxes rather than directly from pumps, and dilution water is introduced into these boxes. Tests have shown that in steadiness of operation and separating efficiency cyclones are comparable to mechanical classifiers. but protective stationarv screens are needed to keep the spigots clear. Rubber-lined pumps are used for pulp of about 3 mesh or finer and metal-lined pumps for coarser material. None of the Union Corp. milling plants practices gravity concentration of coarse gold by amalgamation or the use of corduroy blankets. Studies have proved that no economic case can be made for these methods, which complicate the milling process and demand extra precautions against theft.

The dissolution kinetics of type 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy have been investigated under the well-defined hydrodynamic conditions produced by the rotating-disc sample geometry. In addition, the mutual solubilities of iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese from 304 stainless steel in the eutectic alloy were determined over the temperature range 450" to 985°C. The convective -diffusion model for mass transport from a rotating disc was used to interpret the experinlental dissolution data. The dissolution process was found to be liquid-diffusion-controlled under specific conditions of temperature and Reynolds number. Liquid penetration into the 304 stainless steel resulted in a reduction of the di,ffusion-controlled mass flux and thus precluded the calculation of the diffusion coeficients of the four components from 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy. The convective-diffusion model for diffusional limitations of electrode reactions and mass transport at the tationssurface of a rotating disc set forth by Levich 1,2 has found wide applicability in the investigation of electrochemical and dissolution phenomena in aqueous systems. Riddiford 3 and Rosner have reviewed the model and also include numerous references on work of this nature. More recently the rotating-disc system has been applied to the investigation of hetereogeneous reactions in liquid-metal systems. Shurygin and Kryuk 5 have measured the dissolution rates of carbon discs in molten Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-P, and Fe-Ni alloys. Shurygin and shantarin6 also studied the dissolution kinetics of iron, molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, and the carbides of chromium and tungsten in Fe-C solutions with a rotating-disc sample geometry. In these systems it was possible to distinguish between diffusion and reaction control mainly through experimental confirmation of the velocity dependence of the dissolution rate predicted by the model. However in the absence of dependable solubility data and the virtual lack of diffusion data in these systems, a quantitative check of the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the rate was not possible. In many instances, estimates of the activation energy for solute diffusion and the diffusion coefficient based upon the experimental dissolution data are not credible. A recent study by this author7 has resulted in a critical test of the model in a liquid-metal system. The solution rates of tantalum discs in liquid tin were measured over a wide range of temperature and velocity conditions. In addition, the solubility and diffusion coefficient of tantalum in liquid tin were determined as a function of temperature. The latter data were used with the model to predict both the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the dissolution flux. In that work it was also deemed necessary to reevaluate the solution to the convective diffusion equation to incorporate the effect of the lower range of Schmidt numbers encountered in liquid-metal systems. Good agreement between the model and the experimental dissolution data in the region of diffusion control was obtained in the Ta-Sn system. The Bi-Sn eutectic alloy is used as a seal between the reactor head and the reactor vessel in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-11. The alloy is fused periodically prior to fuel-handling operations. In that connection, it was necessary to investigate the compatibility of the liquid alloy with the type 304 stainless-steel containment material. The results of a rotating-disc study in this multicomponent system are presented. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The 5.08-cm-diam discs were machined from 0.317-cm-thick plate. Chemical analysis information for the type 304 SS material is given in Table I. The discs were ground flat on metallographic paper and given a final polish on Linde B abrasive. A thin support rod was threaded into the disc and the region around the threads was fused under an inert gas. The support rod was fitted with a quartz protection tube and then was attached to a supporting shaft which passed through a rotary push-pull vacuum seal. The disc and supporting shafts were dynamically balanced prior to insertion into the furnace tube. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The 58 pct Bi-42 pct Sn eutectic alloy melts were prepared from 99.995 pct pure Bi and Sn by fusing the components in a 7-cm-ID Pyrex crucible. The system in which the melts were made was evacuated to a pressure of 1 x 10-6 Torr and back-filled with purified argon several times before melting the charge. A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E Hunner,1 M. H Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved.† The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment, of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high iii phosphorus, alumina and moisture The iron ores fall into two classes- (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite) The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high+manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed

With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

Swaged iron wire has a cylindrical {001} <110> texture. The texture is also cylindrical after re-crystallization in the absence of a magnetic field, but <111> and <112> components are added to this texture when recrystallization occurs in a field. The mecizanical properties in tension and in torsion are not greatly altered by these changes in texture. AS shown in a previous paper,1 cold-worked wires of the two fcc metals copper and aluminum can be made relatively strong in torsion and weak in tension, or vice versa, by proper control of preferred orientation (texture). The deformation texture can be controlled by selection of the starting texture (texture before deformation), because certain initial orientations are stable during deformation. The present paper reports on similar work performed on bcc iron. In this case it was clear at the outset that there was no hope of controlling the deformation texture, which is one in which <110> directions are aligned parallel to the wire axis. (1t has usually been regarded as a fiber texture, but Leber2 has recently shown that it is a cylindrical texture of the type {001} <110>. In either case, <110> directions are parallel to the wire axis.) There is general agreement on this texture among a large number of investigators, which in itself suggests that the starting texture has no influence on the deformation texture. More direct evidence was produced by Barrett and Levenson,3 who reported that iron single crystals of widely varying initial orientations all had a single <110> texture when cold-worked into wire. Thus <110> is a truly stable end orientation for iron and probably for other bcc metals as well. Under these circumstances attention was directed to the possibility of controlling the recrystallization texture. This texture is normally <110> in iron,4 just like the deformation texture. However, it is conceivable that this texture could be modified by a proper choice of the time, the temperature, and what might loosely be called the "environment" of the recrystallization heat treatment. In the present work the environmental factor studied was a magnetic field. The effect of heating in a magnetic field ("magnetic annealing") on recrystallization texture has been investigated by Smoluchowski and Turner.5 They found that a magnetic field produced certain changes in the recrystallization texture of a cold-rolled Fe-Co alloy. The texture of this material is normally a mixture of three components, and the effect of the field was to increase the amount of one component at the expense of the other two. Smoluchowski and Turner concluded that the effect was due to magnetostriction. With the applied field parallel to the rolling direction, the observed effect was an increase in the amount of the texture component which had <110> parallel to the rolling direction. In the Fe-Co alloy they studied, the magnetostriction is low in the <110> direction and high in the <100> direction. Thus nuclei oriented with <110> parallel to the rolling direction will have less strain energy than those with <100> orientations and will therefore be more likely to grow. In a later paper on the same subject, Sawyer and Smoluchowski6 ascribed the effect to magneto-crystalline anisotropy and made no mention of magnetostriction. In the papers of Smoluchowski et al. the intensity of the magnetic field was not reported but it was presumably large, inasmuch as it was produced by an electromagnet. In the second paper6 it is specifically mentioned that the specimens were magnetically saturated. But if magnetostriction has a selective action on the genesis of stable nuclei during recrystallization, that selectivity must depend only on differences in magneto-strictive strains between different crystal orientations and not on the absolute values of those strains. Thus the saturated state does not necessarily produce the greatest selectivity, because the relative difference in magnetostrictive strains between different crystal directions may be larger for partially magnetized crystals than for fully saturated ones.7 In the present work the specimens were subjected to relatively weak fields (0 to 100 oe) produced by solenoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS Armco ingot iron rod (containing 0.02 pct C and 0.19 pct other impurities) was swaged from 0.25 in. in diam. to 0.05 in., a reduction in area of 96 pct.
