Estimating ground-water inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies, including the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels, for estimating steady-state ground-water inflows into deep rock tunnels. Statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations, and a semiempirical procedure was used to estimate ground-water inflows. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels that exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semiempirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing data distribution irregularities and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable ground-water inflow estimates.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.

Tunneling could be a major challenge to tunneling contractors as tunneling operations can be seriously affected by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performance. Specifying the appropriate TBM methodology, selection of systems and features, is critical for managing tunnel risks and contribute to successful tunneling project. The paper analyzes tunneling records from the recently completed City of Toronto’s Ashbridges Bay Treatment Outfall tunnel project and underlines the righteous selection of the TBM type and associated TBM systems in achieving good advance rates during tunnelling and managing project risks. The paper intends to draw attention of a few aspects of TBM technical specification importance and highlight the lessons learned from this process.

Introduction Economic pressures in the international marketplace have spurred advances in almost every facet of flotation. New developments have occurred in flotation chemicals, flotation machines, and in the application of automated process control technology to grinding and flotation. Many of these advances are the results of concerted efforts to apply the knowledge obtained from basic flotation research over the past 15 to 20 years, to develop industrial technology for the more efficient separation of sulfide minerals in real ores. Mining company executives and equipment manufacturers are being called on to make decisions for incorporating some of this technology into present operations. This discussion is limited to two developments now at the stage of being engineered into industrial scale operations. They are control of the electrochemical environment or redox potential of the slurry, and control of bubble size in column flotation. Potential economic impacts are noted. Froth flotation Froth flotation makes use of differences in the surface properties of finely ground minerals to obtain separation. If the mineral surface is water repellent, the mineral particle will stick at the air-water interface of a bubble and float. If a mineral surface is not naturally water repellent, a chemical collector is added to the slurry to make it so. The collector must adsorb on, and make water repellent only the mineral to be recovered, not the gangue minerals. To achieve this degree of selective adsorption, chemical modifiers may have to be added to the slurry. Modifiers include pH regulators, activators, and depressants. Electrochemical control One of the most significant developments in recent years in the area of mineral processing technology is the recognition that collector adsorption of sulfide minerals is an electrochemical process. Consequently, flotation of these minerals depends on the electrochemical or redox potential of the system. The device is used in conjunction with a standard radio-dispatching system; it is inexpensive and very simple to build and operate. It enables the dispatcher to make near opti¬mum dispatching decisions and to identify all off schedule haulage trucks. The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

Surface mining accounts for most coal production in Indian geo-mining conditions compared with underground methods, whose implementations are in deeper coal reserves and for lower stripping ratio in a congested operating space. The bord-and-pillar method is the preferred underground method in India for reasons of flexibility and investment cost. While previous researchers conducted field investigations on intact overburden conditions, this study focuses on the strata control issues in a bord-and-pillar depillaring working under the influence of the dead-load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. The modeling results helped in ascertaining the criticality of strata behavior and rib-pillar stability in actual mining conditions when compared with the conventional intact overburden.

Coal liquefaction processes can be divided into two broad classifications - direct and indirect. Direct liquefaction processes, in general, slurry coal with a solvent and react it with hydrogen under elevated temperature and pressure. Indirect liquefaction is the term applied to processes in which coal is first gasified to generate a synthesis gas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The synthesis gas is then converted to various types of liquid fuels by the proper selection of catalyst and conditions. The first experiments on direct coal liquefaction were undertaken in 1933 by Bergius. Development and commercialization of the Bergius concept was accomplished mainly through the effort of I.G. Farben at the Ludwigshafen plant of its subsidiary, Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik A.G, under the leadership of M. Pier (1). A demonstration plat having an annual capacity of 100,000 tons of coal was built in Leuna, Saxony in 1927. Six years later, Imperial Chemicals Industries, Ltd., commissioned a plant in Billingham, England (2).

Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

The tempo of air pollution control regulations has increased dramatically in the past few years. Because coal mining operations are frequently located in remote areas away from urban developments, specific regulations applying to coal mines have received lower priority and are thus only now being promulgated and/or enforced. Therefore, many mine operators are not yet familiar with the regulations and the impact upon their method of operations. Few have been faced with an inspector on the property sighting them for specific violations. Several of the Mid-western states are just now requiring permit applications to be submitted.

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

The Occidental Oil Shale mining and retorting system for the production of shale oil has many advantages over the conventional underground mine and surface retort systems. For example only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported to the outside, where it blends with the existing shale talus found on most of the slopes in the immediate area. The retorted spent shale is retained underground so that it does not become a surface disposal problem. The process consumes only minor amounts of water which is produced in adequate amounts in the retorting to fulfill all mining operations needs without outside supplies. Noise and dust levels are kept to a minimum with most of the facilities located underground. The exception being the generating stations and facilities as required to monitor air and water qualities, and last but not least, more than four times as much oil is pro¬duced from a given acre than from conventional surface processing. With the increased thicknesses as available on the government monopoly area this number could be increased by a substantial amount.

In recent years, slabs with a rough surface have captured a large share of the ornamental stone market. However, the main technologies used for this type of treatment are based on mechanical shock (bush-hammering) or thermal treatment (flaming or flame-finishing). These traditional technologies are widely used, but have many limitations that decrease their usefulness. The purpose of this study was to develop a technology that enhances the natural colors of the rock and produces a rough surface without compromising its mechanical characteristics, in contrast to traditional technologies. This report shows the technical, economic and aesthetic results obtained with a new water-jet treatment and compares it with competing technologies.

Anomalies of sulfur dioxide and other gases have been defined, by direct measurement, around various sulfide bodies. These readings were made (1) in soil gas and (2) in the atmosphere, from both ground vehicles and, to a limited extent, from helicopters. Test areas included porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits, sulfide bearing vein systems, pyrite zones associated with sandstone uranium accumulations, and pyrite-bearing mine dumps. Some of the deposits are covered by as much as several hundred feet of overburden or barren rock, while others outcrop, or have been exposed by mining operations. Depending on local conditions, background values of sulfur dioxide in soil gas and the atmosphere range from 1 to 15 parts per billion. Using present techniques, anomalous readings are recognized at approximately two times background. Apparent "depth penetration? on known deposits has ranged to several hundred feet. Readings have been made over known deposits from a helicopter and ground vehicle moving at up to 40 mph. The rate at which the survey may be carried out depends largely on the size and extent of the anomaly. The existence and magnitude of sulfur dioxide anomalies around sulfide-bearing deposits is a function of geology, target size, soil moisture, and climatic conditions such as temperature and temperature changes, barometric pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation. Industrial S02 pollution can effectively mask the presence of the anomalies sought.

The United States has abundant coal resources that could last at least another century. and probably longer at present consumption rates. Geographically, the coal resources are distributed over the entire nation including Alaska, although there are no coal deposits in the highly populated areas on the two coasts. This allows free access to the coal, but makes transportation more expensive. Not all coals can be utilized equally because they differ vastly in quality. The sulfur content of coals, considered as the most detrimental acid rain-causing element, varies from as low as 0.3 percent in some areas of the western U.S. to 5 percent or more in parts of the Midwest. The chlorine content, which causes corrosion of plant hardware, also varies regionally. The 1990 amendments of the Clean Air Act of 1963 (CAA) require that emissions of sulfur be restricted and rolled back in two stages by the year 2000. There have been a number of reports expressing concern about the future of the industry in the states where high sulfur coal is produced. The remedies devised by the federal government and many coal-producing states in the past to "se-cure" the future of the regional coal industries have focused on the physical task of removing sulfur rather than the economic challenge of doing so at a cost that will enable high-sulfur coals to survive and compete. The past remedies, generally, were not specific enough to account for the characteristics of regional coal deposits and did not look at the coal market as an integrated national and international entity. The State of Illinois has, in recent years, taken a more comprehensive approach to the solution of the problem.

The West Gates Deicing Industrial Waste Pond Expansion project at Denver International Airport seeks to expand utilities to accommodate additional terminal gates. The project includes six tunnel crossings beneath taxiways and runways with lengths ranging from 239 to 2,025 linear feet. Excavation methods include shielded tunnel boring machines and steerable auger boring. Designed initial support includes liner plate, steel ribs and lagging, steel casing, and Fiberglass Reinforced Pipe and ranges in size from 24" to 132". This paper will discuss challenges associated with the overall layout and design of the project, including contingencies to protect critical infrastructure. In addition, a construction update is provided.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.
