Field sampling was conducted in Lake Junin, Peru in order to assess the post-depositional reactivity of the highly contaminated lake sediments. High resolution profiles of dissolved Fe, Mn, SO42- and H2S across the sediment-water interface illustrate that the organic-rich sediments in the main basin become anoxic within several millimetres of the sediment-water interface. These permanently submerged deposits in the main basin serve as a diffusive sink for dissolved Zn and Cu. Conversely, the periodically unsaturated deposits in shallow areas are characterized by the remobilization of Zn and Cu in the deep acidic (pH < 4) pore waters, resulting in the release of these metals to the overlying water column.

An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. In jig operation it is essentially of the most importance to create efficiently the pulsation of the water best suited for coal washing. The optimum pulsation should be determined by the theory of jigging process, and the method to realize it by that of pulsating mechanism.

In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It&apos;s time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100&apos; -125&apos; of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green&apos;s J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

The transformation of raw iron ore into high quality steel can take place via several processes. A general consistent theme involves the upgrading of the iron ores via methods such as flotation and magnetic separation, the preparation of an agglomerate such as via pelletization or sintering, the smelting of the agglomerate into a high grade iron product, and the further refining of iron into specific steel alloys. Each of these steps admit potential for optimizations and alternatives, and the process overall is critical to meeting the world’s continuing iron demands.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990&apos;s. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

"To more rigorously address tunneling risks to above-ground structures, vulnerability evaluation of all structures along a tunnel route is required. This multi-block area along the route can be considered a district. To fully assess each structure within a tunnel’s zone of influence, a multi-block or district-level model may provide new insights as to risk evaluation and mitigation strategies. However populating such a model with the existing geometry of the built environment poses a major challenge as measured drawings are not readily available for all structures along a tunnel’s route. Cost-effective population of such a model could arguably involve remote sensing data in the form of laser scanning or photogramme-try. However even for unreinforced masonry structures, where external, above-ground geometries can be captured, without a prohibitively expensive building-by-building, in person survey many factors would remain unknown. To consider these uncertainties in an automatic way, a performance assess-ment framework is proposed. Such a framework allows a more rigorous, initial, risk quantification than is currently possible within the simple empirical models generally being used in industry when tunneling risk is initially assessed. This paper introduces (within the allowable space limits of this format) consider-ations for auto-population and application of a district-level, tunnel-risk screening tool. INTRODUCTION Challenging topography, intense urbanization and infrastructure development, combined with limited land availability and a growing awareness of environmental issues have lead to increasing usage of un-derground spaces to control aboveground traffic and provide essential services in metropolitan areas. Tunneling, however, is not without its own risks, especially with respect to aboveground structures whether it be widespread minor damage (Burland et al. 2001) or the more notable, although less fre-quent, large-scale collapses such as the 2003 Shanghai (Allianz 2015) or 2004 Singapore (Magnus et al. 2005) events."

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper&apos;s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom-fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three polymeric conditions which were cationic polymer, anionic polymer, and a combination of cationic-anionic polymer. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed: one for overflow response, the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best desired quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, changes in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of the underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots which would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson&apos;s correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. "In order to extract proportionately small quantities of valuable minerals, mining companies move large amounts of earth. A resulting waste product of this process has traditionally been stored in a semi-liquid phase known as tailings, typically stored in a large pond created by an earthen dam at the low end of a drainage basin. It is generally expected that these dams are stable enough to withstand the pressure of the stored material. Unfortunately, history shows us that this is not always the case. The Baia Mare dam in Romania failed in 2000, causing tragic and prolonged environmental damage to several major European rivers. The Bento Rodrigues dam in Brazil failed on Nov. 5, 2015, and that event resulted in the loss of 16 lives.In hard rock mining, many minerals are imbedded within the ore. As part of the mining process, valuable minerals are extracted from the ore; often, the mineral content is only a fraction of the total ore volume processed. To extract the minerals, the ore is typically crushed and pulverized into very fine particles, then wetted to form slurries. The minerals are extracted from the slurries through a series of flotation and/or sedimentation steps with the aid of water-soluble separation chemicals typically known as reagents. Following the mineral extraction, the resulting residual wetted ore cuttings are labeled as tailings. At the end of the extraction process, the tailings are in a thick semi-fluid sludge state, often with trace elements of the extraction reagents.Historically, these tailings are deposited in giant basins or sludge ponds, where they pose a great threat to the environment while binding large volumes of waste process water.Process water recovery and achievingdry tailingsCurrent generation engineering studies, trials and successful field implementation have shown that an alternate process known as dry stacking is practical. The dry stacking process deposits dewatered tailings into containment areas that are smaller in overall footprint and significantly safer by reducing the transfer of reagents into the tailings storage area. In addition to achieving the dry tailing benefits mentioned, it is possible to recover valuable process water while dewatering the tailings sludge utilizing modern separation technology."

Most modern crushing and grinding facilities are automated to some degree. Some, of course, have a very minimum of automatic control whereas others utilize very complex control equipment. However, with very few exceptions, the re has not been a new basic control philosophy applied in this field in the past seven years. The philosophy has been broadened in scope and applied to larger plants, some of them with data logging and so- called computer control, but almost always the same tried and proven basic control philosophy is the basis for the control system. New types of control devices to better implement the automatic control have been developed and are continuing to be developed. These devices and their application will be explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Automatic lubrication of plant equipment is most essential, but this paper will not cover these systems. The use of data logging and computer analysis of the data obtained is fairly recent and it is hoped that by careful analysis of this information that new and better basic control philosophy will be forthcoming. This paper will describe the basic philosophy applied in its simplest form to several types of crushing and grinding equipment, and it will describe how it is being expanded to more complex systems. Some of the economics with regard to first cost, return on investment and maintenance will be covered.

This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

This paper discusses recent Federal Bureau of Mines research on the selective flocculation of various minerals with insoluble crosslinked starch xanthate (ISX). ISX is insoluble, has a shelf life of over a year when kept cold, and has a higher molecular weight due to cross linking than the soluble noncrosslinked starch xanthate used in previous flocculation studies on nonsulfide minerals. ISX readily flocculates a number of sulfide mineral fines but not silicious gangue. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are strongly dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Bornite has been selectively flocculated from bornite-quartz mixtures, and the bornite-containing flocs were separated from the unflocculated quartz using decantation and washing procedures.

"A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electricfield (E-field) sensing to send text-based communications through two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivities. IntroductionWireless, through-the-earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. Using this approach, communications are established without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure. As a result, TTE systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker, 2006; Wadley, 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer, 1973; Geyer and Keller, 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya, 1974; Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad, 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate in a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker, 2006; Geyer and Keller, 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya, 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers, 1928; Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Yenchek et al., 2012)."

The goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high- quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are crucial to green technology such as hybrid-electric vehicles, wind turbines and fluorescent light bulbs. As of 2011, China dominates the global production of REEs and is reducing its export quotas. To predict the supply of rare earths in the United States based on future supply scenarios, a web-based database and geographic visualization tool was built. Five case scenarios with varying levels of REE demand were created by varying several economic conditions including (1) international trade policy, (2) greenhouse gas regulations, (3) environmental mining regulations and (4) tech applicability ratio of REEs. The most likely scenario, which is based on current international demand levels, indicates the importance of expediting the development of extractive operations of current REE resources within the United States. The results of the different case scenarios are supported by using dynamic geographic maps indicating the location of rare earth ore (REO) resources.

The use of activated alumina for the removal of selenium from heap leach detoxification solutions was studied at a laboratory scale. Three different aluminas were studied, one unmodified and two chemically modified to function better in a basic pH range. The best performer, Discovery Chemicals DD-6, readily accumulated selenium oxyanions. Furthermore, it could be stripped of selenium and several metals by a mild caustic solution (pH 11.5 – 12.0) and regenerated for further use. Tests using - 600 µm, + 300 µm (28 x 48 mesh) material indicated that 96 % could be removed from solution and using – 1.18mm, + 600 µm (14 x 28 mesh) material 91 % could be removed. However, soluble silica can accumulate on the activated alumina and subsequently interfere with its regeneration and should be removed from the detox solution prior to use of the adsorbent.
