Rock stress measurements have been carried out by the Mining Department, the Norw. Institute of Technology (NTH) since 1964. Before that time rock stress measurements were carried out at a few locations by the Swedish professor Hast as early as 1958. From the very beginning the NTH engagement in the rock stress measuring field has been very practically aimed, and we have all the time enjoyed a very good cooperation with the Norwegian mining industry. At a very early stage the industry realized that proper measurements with proper equipment could be a very valuable practical tool. Hence the industry also was willing to grant considerable funds for the education of experts and development of measuring techniques. Since 1964 measurements have been carried out in the great majority of Norwegian mines. During the last years a large number of measurements have also been carried out in connection with hydro-electric power plants, road tunnels etc.

A study was conducted for the AEC to determine the feasibility of constructing an unsupported 315 foot diameter spherical cavity at a depth of 2,700 feet in a salt dome. A cavity of this size and shape has never been attempted. It was determined that the three basic essentials for solution mining; adequate salt, fresh water, and a means of brine disposal were available at the Tatum Salt Dome in Lamar County, Mississippi. Assuming a large, unsupported mined opening of the size and at the depth required would remain stable, the most practical method of providing the cavity using solution mining techniques is by use of a movable blanket of air to control the water level to properly shape the cavity while removing the insolubles either with jetting or by conventional mining methods. It is estimated that, using the jetting method of insolubles removal, the cavity can be constructed in 24 months for approximately $7 million. Using conventional mining techniques to remove the insolubles and shape the final cavity, it is estimated that the cavity can be constructed in 36 months for approximately $12.6 million.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Never in the history of our mining industry has the emphasis on public relations been accelerated as much as it has in the last few years. Knowing of your keen interest in this subject I consider it a great privilege that your program committee has asked me here to discuss the crushed stone segment of our industry approach to this important part of our daily business lives. As you are aware, crushed stone operations are present in almost every segment of the country wherever aggregates for construction projects are required. The tonnage of crushed stone produced is second only to sand and gravel - another source of aggregates - and this together with sand and gravel amounts to over half of the tonnage of all mined products in the United States. What is unique about this industry that will be of interest to all of you in analyzing how they have approached Public Relations? The fact that it is so wide-spread is of course obvious, but perhaps a more significant nature of this segment of the mining industry that has brought it more in the limelight of public interest and on a larger scale is the location of a large part of the quarries quite close into the urban area and population centers where you have the greatest demand for aggregate products.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) ore is concentrated by low-magnetic-field drums to recover a magnetite concentrate that is low in silica (SiO2). The presence of SiO2 in the magnetite concentrate for steel production increases the steel processing costs, so a major challenge in magnetic concentration is to lower the SiO2 grade in the Fe concentrate. This work presents studies that were carried out on the removal of SiO2 from the magnetite concentration at the plant scale. Studies were performed with a three 36 × 96″ drum unit processing 46 ton/h of rougher magnetite concentrate. These studies showed that silica appears in the magnetite concentrate by three mechanisms, namely SiO2 entrainment in Fe3O4 chains, heterocoagulation between Fe3O4 and SiO2 particles, and mineral locking of SiO2 to Fe3O4. The SiO2 entrainment mechanism had the highest contribution (75%) to the SiO2 recovered in the Fe concentrate. Electrokinetic studies on Fe3O4 and SiO2 showed that heterocoagulation occurs because of the low negative zeta potential of the minerals at the pH of the plant slurry. This study also showed that a high percentage of ultrafine size SiO2 particles trapped in Fe3O4 agglomerates was not removed by the dilution water for the slurry fed to the drum. To lower the SiO2 recovery in the drum magnetic concentration process, work should be directed towards the removal of trapped SiO2 in Fe3O4 agglomerates.

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium [Se], which are introduced to seepage waters. Nitrogen species, such as nitrate and ammonia, are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal mining environments in British Columbia, with values ranging from below 50 to over 500 µg/L in site waters. Selenate is the most common form of selenium found in waste rock seepages, and is exceedingly mobile in aerobic freshwaters. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains. Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining wastewaters has proven to be challenging for conventional water treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry. The Electro-Biochemical Reactor (EBR) technology provides electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V), supplying a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the system and microbes at low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical, and robust biotreatment system than found in past generations of biological treatment systems. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required. Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal mine wastewaters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia?s coal-mining wastewaters.

Many utility fuel choices 1990-95 defied expectations, with utility decisions and coal market developments ever more closely linked. The Central Appalachian coal boom never occurred; clean-enough coal was developed in the hard-hit Midwest; Colorado-Utah coal surged; Pittsburgh seam production strengthened; utilities embraced Powder River Basin coal; and emission allowance prices collapsed. Competition drove productivity gains, but the future is not a simple repeat. Phase 2 brings fewer viable compliance options. Mega-railroad pricing has become a key risk factor -- will this be countermanded by merging utilities and power market competition? Revenue losses from vintage contracts are problematic. Uncertainty also plagues natural gas, in spite of unanimity across major forecasts, since recent experience has been so heavily influenced by the gas bubble.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is beginning to provide compliance assistance visits to various industries, including mining, for Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) compliance. The EPA inspectors may consist of a multi-media team deployed to review systems and procedures for EPCRA Sections 302, 304, 311, and 312. The Team’s focus may include emergency response plans, training programs, qualifications of personnel, and release notification protocols. This presentation takes a look at the EPCRA compliance challenges faced by Arizona copper mining and processing facilities.

The paper provides an overview of subsidence research which was done by the Sasol Company in South Africa over a period of more than six years. The magnitudes of subsidence elements in South Africa are largely similar to those in the U.S.A. and Australia, as opposed to Europe. The research resulted in a subsidence prediction method with a new approach to the prediction of ground strain. The paper also describes the effects of subsidence on various commonly occurring surface structures such as roads, overland conveyor belts, pipe lines and power pylons. It is concluded that while most structures are not specifically designed to accommodate mining induced displacements, they can nontheless be undermined safely and economically with only minor precautions.

Pregrouting is an extremely important part of many rock tunneling projects. However, poor and unsatisfactory performances have been frequently recorded often with very severe consequences, technically and financially. This paper, based on personal knowledge of several relevant case histories, provides recommendations with respect to specification drafting, drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting methodologies, and cementitious grout mix design principles. Even given that the logistical challenges facing tunnel pregrouting from underground will prevent all the sophistication and innovations of contemporary dam foundation grouting being practically implemented, there is still opportunity and need to change “traditional” approaches.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5.
