This investigation included a study of three different methods for the acoustic drying of ultrafine coals. Ultrafine coal being defined as coal which passes through a 100 mesh sieve. The first method employed stationary drying of small coal samples in sound fields having frequencies of 12,000 cps and 20,000 cps. Sound intensities up to 150 db were used. The second method employed the use of rotary drying kilns. The effect of such variables as temperature, sound intensity, coal feed rate, air flow rate, and initial moisture content were studied. The third method employed the use of a multi-tiered, vibrating screen dryer. The effect of initial moisture content and residence time were studied.

The selection of efficiency machinery for an underground mining system is a highly skilled art. Modern techniques of mining, based on sound engineering principles, increase the probability of success. These techniques alone, however, will not guarantee maximum productivity. Human judgement, based on experience with mineral seams and geological conditions, remains the single most important input of the decision-making techniques in selecting high production equipment. The myth of a "Scientific Selection Factor" is absurd. The belief that such a factor exists can waste the time and resources of mining management. Until now, mineral extraction from the original desposit has defied all attempts to systematize the knowledge. Computerized programs are excellent for solving underground transportation and ventilation problems. The variables can be defined by mathe¬matical techniques in this type of problem. By the same, token, "Trial and Error" is not an acceptable method in today's technology-minded world. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from the solid. Likewise, local conditions make it nearly impossible to predict accurately the reaction of surrounding strata after the mineral has been removed. The unpredictability of the environment resulting from extracting minerals underground will remain a challenge to mining engineers for many years. In fact, we are barely beyond the trial and error stage at this point in time.

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

Project engineering and development is a process of optimisation of capital, operating and financial costs, and extraction rates in the light of current and forecast economic conditions for the sale of the product. The aim of the process is to maximize financial returns to the sponsors (project owners) within many often conflicting constraints. Thus, the sponsor's engineering and financial staff have a common goal, with performance measured in financial terms. Consequently, each group must be aware of, and responsive to, the constraints imposed upon the other. For financial staff, the increasing size and complexity, and escalating capital costs of new ventures have required them to seek finance in larger amounts, and by non-traditional methods. In addition, senior management are requiring indications of the availability of finance as a pre-requisite to a decision to commence project development activities.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine pl aces its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks, Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinate) and heading (yaw), are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: A scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system that employs ring-laser gyroscopes. This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to the remote positioning tasks of a continuous mining machine. Included are field test results of each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating mine in West Virginia.

This paper describes a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model that was developed for planning the coal operations at Mountain Coals, Inc., in Kentucky. The model incorporates the use of stockpiles as practiced and allows the operator to find the least cost combination of raw coal feeds, washing densities and blending to produce the different quality coals as required by the coal contracts.

Hanna Mining Company's Groveland Mine is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron ore deposit consists of a mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, jasper, quartz and various iron silicates (1). The ore is beneficiated by magnetic separation and anionic flotation of the iron minerals with chemical depression of the silica. The magnetic concentrate makes up about 75% of the concentrate. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 2.0 million LTPY of pellet production. The concentrator facilities were started up in 1959 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until 1963 when the concentrator was expanded and the pelletizing plant was added. The pellet plant now consists of regrinding, elutriation, filtering, balling and induration. The pellet machine is a straight grate which employs updraft drying and cooling and downdraft drying, preheat and firing. It is necessary to regrind the concentrate before pelletizing. The con-centrate is 60% passing 325 mesh, with a surface area of ±lOOO cm2/Gm, and must be ground to about 83% passing 325 mesh, 1600 cm2/Gm blaine surface area, for pelletizing. The energy for regrind has been reduced from 12.5 KW per LT to 8.80 KW ate of 2.0 million per LT. This was the result of changes made in the concentrator where originally a coarse spiral concentrate, instead of the magnetic concentrate which is screened on fine screens to reduce the coarse fraction and prevent overgrinding before flotation, was produced. Also in 1968 an additional concentrating line was added to the concentrator which employs more grinding power than the other three lines. The demand for a high iron grade and lower silica pellet resulted in the investigation of different schemes of upgrading the reground concentrate which had more iron values liberated during grinding for surface area. The reagentized material presented many problems, mainly in selectivity trying to flot the iron and with high reagent consumption having to dereagentize the concentrate for amine silica flotation, in the various flotation systems tried. Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

Research efforts have been made to characterize a refractory Brazilian bauxite ore composed basically of gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis of the unbroken ore has been used to describe the liberation characteristics and the association between mineral phases. The linear grade distributions for selected particle size fractions were determined by means? of a particular implementation of King's Random Fracture Model that uses the exponential model for the distribution of linear intercepts through both dispersed (kaolinite) and continuous (gibbsite) phases. The corresponding volumetric grade distributions were then determined by means of a constrained optimization technique for the solution of the transformation equation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out to determine the kinetics for particles of different sizes and the results correlated with the liberation spectrum for each size class.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.

Stressmap is a program whereby the earth's stress field is charted in detail and utilized for design of mines and mine exploitation. This program is implemented by mapping the attitude (location, direction, dip, and extent) of induced rock ruptures during the process of hydrafracturing drill holes contiguous to mine interest. The program includes utilization of ancillary naturally occurring stress relief signals, They are precipitated because the earth is indeed dynamic and the strata of the crust are continually adjusting to load and/or strain differentials resulting in rock deformation and fracturing. These fracturing adjustments occur as small to tiny earthquakes comparable to Richter magnitudes of one, zero, minus one, and smaller events termed microearthquakes. Obviously, the earth's stress field changes due to continued differential loading and crustal movements; therefore it becomes conspicuously evident that resolving today's stress field as opposed to paleostresses is most important for efficient, economical, and safe mining operations.

Understanding the effects of various ventilation and climatic parameters on the work conditions and comfort in underground mines is critical for efficient ventilation system design and cost savings and to ensure the health and safety of mine workers. To understand the effects that the thermal damping effect (TDE) and the thermal flywheel effect (TFE) have on the ventilation system design and potential cooling system, this paper compares and analyzes the wet and dry-bulb temperatures at the bottom of an intake shaft using two modeling software packages, Ventsim™ and Climsim™. The comparison shows the consequences and importance of taking into account the TDE/TFE when predicting the climatic conditions in future underground mines, especially when deciding on whether a cooling system should be employed in order to provide adequate climatic conditions in the production stopes, dead-end development headings, and throughout the mine. Ventsim™is able to account for the TFE, while Climsim™does not. Both software packages have their uses and are used within the mining industry, but it is useful to understand their limitations and where the future of underground climatic modeling will lead.

"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

"The solvent extraction of cerium(III) and samarium(III) from mixed solutions of all rare earth elements (REEs) except promethium using PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), an acidic extractant, was investigated. The effects of aqueous equilibrium pH, various acids (sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3 )), initial metal ion concentration and extractant concentration on the solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III) were systematically studied. From the experimental results, HNO3 and HCl were found to be the preferred aqueous media for the solvent extraction of both Sm(III) and Ce(III). The most promising experimental conditions of pH, PC88A concentration and metal ion concentration were identified for the extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III). Separation results showed that H2 SO4 at pH 2 provided the best separation between Sm(III) and Ce(III). IntroductionIn recent years, demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has increased significantly because of their many commercial applications. REEs have especially important high-tech applications owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, and they are used in a wide range of areas such as catalysts, ceramics, magnets, lasers, glass, neutron absorption and alloys. As REEs have very similar physicochemical properties, their separation and purification from each other is challenging and gaining significant interest. Samarium (Sm) and cerium (Ce) are found in different REE minerals, including bastnäsite ((Ce,La,Nd(CO3)F), xenotime (YPO4) and monazite ((Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4) at major production sites in the United States and China, as listed in Table 1 (Bleiwas and Gambogi, 2013). The most common acidic organophosphorous extractants used for REEs extraction and separation are DEHPA (di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid), PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), Cyanex 272 (bis-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid) (Sarangi, Reddy and Das, 1999; Surampally et al., 2012; Tian, Jia and Liao, 2013). Out of these extractants, PC88A is known for providing higher separation factors (Acharya, Mishra and Misra, 2015). El-Hefny et al. (2010) investigated the kinetics of the solvent extraction of Sm from chloride media using sodium salt of Cyanex 272 and reported the extracted species to be Sm(OH)A2•2HA. Lee et al. (2005) investigated the solvent extraction of Sm(III) with PC88A and saponified PC88A from chloride solutions and found the stoichiometry of the extraction reactions to be 1.5 with PC88A and 3 with saponified PC88A."

A 200 pound per hour Magnex Pilot Plant was designed and constructed. A non-compliance Eastern Coal which would generate more than 2.0 lb of SOZ per million Btu upon burning was brought into compliance (less than 1.2 lb of S02 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 86 percent of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex Program is reviewed.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth&apos;s fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. In surface mining of coal and, to a lesser extent, metallic ores, much waste is stripped, but in nonmetallic pits and quarries the ratio between waste and ore usually is small. During the past ten years a number of papers have appeared describing zeolite occurrences in the western United States in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, altered bedded Tertiary pyroclastics, playa lakes, hot springs, and amygdaloidal basalts. With the emergence of natural zeolites as economic industrial minerals it appears, useful to develop a system of classification to delineate those zeolite deposits of economic interest which were not discovered until the middle 1950&apos;s. The first attempt at a classification of naturally occurring zeolites was made in 1914 by Lindgren l when he classified the zeolites into eleven groups based on their mode of occurrence. The zoned zeolites in the Mesozoic rocks of New Zealand and elsewhere were classified according to the mineral assemblages by Fyfe, et al.2 in 1958 as a zeolite facies corresponding to low grade regional metamorphism. In 1966, Hay suggested as an alternative to the preceding classification one which would "classify as diagenetic all mineral assemblages produced in sedimentary rocks under conditions in which zeolites are formed." In this paper a classification is proposed with the objective of providing an overall perspective of the zeolite occurrences in the western United States.

Based on the research background of 1303 working face return air roadway in Jinyuan Zhaoxian Mine, Shaanxi Province, a method of determining the reasonable spacing of boreholes is proposed based on the stress transfer degree of coal above and between boreholes, combined with the law of plastic zone and energy evolution by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. After drilling pressure relief, the average daily energy of microseismic events decreased by 70%, and those with microseismic energy greater than 104 J decreased by 99.2%. The research has a strong guiding significance and research value for determining the reasonable distance of borehole pressure relief.
