In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual's carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man's best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don't need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. The paper will describe a number of developments and innovations now in use in microtunnelling machines. These include the use of fuzzy logic steering systems, the proven ability to successfully undertake complex curved microtunnel drives, the ability to complete ultra long drives using microtunnelling techniques, and machines with access to the face of the machine from inside the machine. The ability to tunnel in relatively hard rock utilizing a rock head with back loaded cutters changeable from inside the microtunnel machine and the ability to utilize microtunnel machines in multi modes, such as hard rock mode, “open” mode, EPB mode, and slurry mode with the same base machine again with access to the face of the machine will be described. In addition, the latest computer technology gives the operator “full visualization” of machine functions together with the ability to data log machine operating parameters. Reference will be made to a number of projects worldwide recently completed or under way where these innovations have successfully been utilized.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). The Ekati process plant flowsheet features the common steps in diamond recovery plant design. Primary treatment and concentration is by crushing, scrubbing, high-pressure grinding rolls and heavy medium separation (Fig. 1). Secondary concentration is by an attrition mill; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation and X-ray sorting (Fig. 2). All of these are performed on site, although final sorting of the diamonds into commercial categories will be carried out elsewhere. The initial throughput rate is 9 kt/d (9,900 stpd), increasing to 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) during the first 10 years of operation. A range of ore characteristics will be encountered that will effect the plant operating conditions during the life of the mine. The adopted design envelope is based on these expected variations. The design is based on the use of large-scale equipment, incorporating the latest and most efficient technology available. Where proven technology exists, no attempt was made to reinvent the wheel. However, where recently developed technology offers a significant advantage, this has been incorporated into the design. The Ekati run-of-mine (ROM) and coarse ore handling facilities are unheated, to take advantage of the better handling characteristics of the frozen ore in winter. The stockpile reclaim features an MMD mineral sizer (a toothed roll crusher) to minimize the problems of handling thawed, sticky kimberlite in the summer and break frozen lumps in the winter. All processing downstream from primary crushing and the coarse ore stockpile is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building. Personnel involvement in the process is mini¬mized by using a Modicon Quantum series PLC with human-machine-interfaces (HMI) running Wonder-ware software on dedicated personal computers.

Custom Coals, International has installed and is presently testing a 225 kg/hr. (500 lb/hr.) micronized-magnetite, fine-coal cleaning circuit at PETC's Process Research Facility (PRF). The cost-shared project was awarded as part of the Coal Preparation Program's High Efficiency Preparation Subprogram. The project includes design, construction and testing of a fully-integrated, bench-scale circuit, complete with feed coal classification to remove the minus 30 micron slimes, dense-medium cycloning of the 300 by 30 micron feed coal using three different size micronized-magnetite mediums, and medium recovery circuits using drain and rinse screens and various stages and types of magnetic separators. This paper describes the project circuit and goals, including a description of the current project status and the sources of coal and magnetite which are being tested.

This paper addresses the valuation and development timing of an undeveloped mineral project. Traditional analysis has us developing the project immediately if its net present value (NPV) is positive. Option pricing theory finds that it is better to wait until the NPV of the property is significantly greater than zero before developing. Alternatively, when evaluating the development timing decision, we must calculate NPV using a higher "timing-adjusted" discount rate, and develop the property only if its NPV using this timing-adjusted discount rate is greater than zero. This paper uses option pricing ideas to convert this development timing advice into a more concrete and user-friendly decision rule: develop the project when its "development-timing NPV" is positive, this development-timing NPV being calculated using the normal discount rate.

It is difficult to decide who most deserves credit for discovery of a mining district that has produced over 19.8 Mg (7,000,000 fine oz) of gold and still contains a large reserve of low grade ore. Fred Culver may have made the first discovery. In the summer of 1867, the ship's log of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s steamer Otter stated that Fred Culver had been found nearly lifeless from wounds, without provisions, but with some 2.3 kg (80 oz) of rough, placer gold in the bottom of his canoe; he told of finding a rich creek and an attack by Indians that caused the death of his two companions. The place of rescue was about 24 km (15 miles) southeast from the present site of Juneau. Possibly John Muir, the hero of modem environmentalists, should be given important credit. In 1879 he reported finding mineralization along what later became to be known as the Juneau Gold Belt, and it was his report that induced the cantankerous German mining engineer, George Pilz, to grub- stake some of the prospectors who had drifted into Sitka from the declining gold placers of Cassiar, British Columbia. Pilz also offered rewards to Indians who might report gold discoveries.

Geotechnical solutions were developed for closure of two historic, remote underground mines in the deserts of southern California. Closure criteria included access closure, minimal site impact, and optimum use of native materials. The closure designs and construction activities incorporated techniques for protecting sensitive biota, particularly bats and desert tortoise. The types of mine openings that were closed include adits, declines, shafts, daylighted stopes, and dugout dwellings. The desert locations permitted implementation of cost-effective closure techniques that relied upon the use of native materials. The strategies and techniques developed for these desert closures are adaptable to other climates.

Underground mines, penetrating well below the water table, quickly fill with water when abandoned. Ordinarily, these natural cisterns are not thought of as sources of industrial water. Under special circumstance, if chemically treatable, they might become valuable industrial water reservoirs. An example of a group of about 20 mines in a geological and structural setting insuring water entrapment, rapid recharge and a possible minimum of contamination, are the small, compact Belle Ellen and Piper basins in Alabama's small but second most productive coalfield, the Cahaba. The mines have been abandoned from more than 50 to less than three years. The county now produces about a million tons of coal annually, all from strip mining. Figure 1 shows an idealized cross section of the strata in the Belle Ellen syncline near West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama. Figure 2, 3 and 4 are maps showing the location of the syncline, other structural features, the outcrop lines of the three principal coalbeds underlying the basin, and the mined-out areas on the three beds (1).

The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.

A packed column jig has been developed for sharp separation of fine particles--150 down to 1 micron--having different densities. The packed jig is a column filled with corrugated packing. A slurry of mixed particles is fed into the middle of the column. Water enters near the bottom of the column as both a steady state and a pulsating flow. The pulsating water sets up a jigging action that interacts with the packing causing the dense particles to sink and exit the bottom of the jig and the lighter particles to rise and exit the top of the packed jig. The result is a sharp, environmentally friendly, gravity separation machine with low operating costs. Grades and recoveries of iron ore exceed that of known devices. Grades as high as 95 percent purity with concomitantly high recoveries are common for iron ore concentration. Low silica, sulfur and phosphate are common. This paper is the first to unveil the packed column jig technology in detail and presents its physical model with performance data. The purification of iron ores and coal is the paper's focus.

The rare magnesium-lithium clay mineral hectorite occurs at many places in the McDermitt caldera of Nevada-Oregon. Commercial development of several high purity deposits began in 1986. The hectorite was precipitated in a lake environment formed after collapse of the McDermitt caldera. Hectorite beds and lenses are associated with volcaniclastic sediments, limestones, dolomites, zeolites and locally sandy bentonites. The high purity deposits appear to be associated with hydrothermal areas. The hectorite consists of extremely small flake-shaped crystals, and Ca is the predominant exchangeable ion. Its color ranges from white to light green. Commercial uses developed to date include high brightness magnesium aluminum silicate products, organophilic clays, pulp retention, and ceramics. The MAS is used as a suspending agent, binder, stabilizer and thixotrope in aqueous solutions for cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals and miscellaneous industrial applications. Organoclays are used in printing inks and paints.

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study of the influence of natural features (stress field, rock strength, and strength and orientation of fractures) as well as the influence of induced features (undercut span, boundary slot, and other boundary-weakening measures) on the cavability of an undercut block of ore in mining by the block-caving method. The two-dimensional finite element analysis technique was used for this study. A coarse "mesh," along with linear homogeneous assumptions for rock properties, was used to model the problem of initiation of caving in a block of ore. Interpretation of the test results suggests that weakening the "abutments" of the block as well as certain orientations of natural fractures exercise significant influence on cavability. These findings hold promise for immediate application to known situations in block-caving mines.

Brohm Mining Corporation, in conjunction with Geobiotics, Inc. has nearly completed a pilot heap biooxidation test on sulfidic ore from the Gilt Edge Mine near Rapid City, South Dakota. Some results from the pilot testing have shown the correlation between the extent of biooxidation and the increase in cyanide gold recovery seen in the laboratory. Bench scale testing showed approximately a 1: 1 correspondence between percent biooxidation and percentage increase in gold recovery. The economics of large scale biooxidation were also evaluated in terms of increased gold recovery versus the time and cost of biooxidation. In the pilot test, the rate of biooxidation became limited by the acid water neutralization system. Later in the test, measures were taken to overcome this problem. Results from bench scale column bioleach testing showed that the Gilt Edge sulfide ore is quite amenable to biooxidation with a substantial increase in gold recovery with just partial biooxidation. Direct cyanide gold recovery of 51 % on ore crushed to -3/8" was enhanced to 82-85% after oxidation of37% of the sulfide as measured by iron. Laboratory experiments also showed that the slow rate of biooxidation of this ore could be accelerated by removal of metal sulfate build up from the leach liquor. The combination of these normally non-toxic metals became inhibitory to biooxidation if not removed by the neutralization circuit.

"Kaolinite is a dioctahedral aluminosilicate widely used as paper filler and coating pigment. At the best of our knowledge, kaolinite is not widely used in polymer industry. Therefore, in this study, the flame retardant effect of kaolinite in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and polypropylene (PP) were studied and compared with an alumina trihydrate (ATH) and Talc. Cone calorimeter results shows that the weight percentage of ATH in EVA/ATH composites must be at least 50 wt. % in order to reach an improvement in fire retardancy in terms of pHRR. In the case of EVA/kaolinite, even with 35 wt. % the pHRR is largely reduced. Comparing PP/Talc and PP/kaolinite composites at 30 wt. %, both fillers leads to same reduction in pHRR with a slightly better performance for PP/kaolinite composites. In both cases an intumescent behavior of kaolinite composites was observed that could slow the rate of the rising degradation products, allowing radical recombination reactions. Also, it was observed that kaolinite forms a protective layer on the surface of the samples, which could insulate the material. These behaviors (intumescence and formation of a protective barrier) could reduce the transfer of the degradation products to the flame and explain the better performance of kaolinite composites. INTRODUCTION The use of mineral fillers as fire retardants in polymer matrix are well known and widely studied [1]–[10]. Aluminum and magnesium hydroxides (respectively ATH and MDH) are the most widely used inorganic fire retardants. To achieve fire retardancy with these mineral fillers, about 50-60% loading is required which decrease the physical properties of the composites. The fire behavior of composite EVA has been the subject of many studies [4], [7], [9]–[15]. EVA copolymers are commonly used in the cable industry, due to their high ductility, even at high loading rates. In such applications, the flame retardant systems should be introduced into the polymer to improve the fire reaction. Many flame retardant systems have been tested but the most used industrially relates to formulations based on hydrated mineral fillers (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide). Their low cost and reduced fumes generation explains their success. However, to obtain good performance with this type of flame retardants, it is necessary to incorporate high levels (up to 65 wt %), which severely impact other properties such as processability and mechanical behavior. The main modes of action of these flame retardants are the dilution of the gas phase, the endothermic decomposition and a barrier effect created by the inorganic oxide residue which may be improved by the incorporation of other components such as montmorillonites, silicas or talcs."
