The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres' only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or 'white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

"In copper solvent extraction, managing the quality of the organic phase is a key parameter to ensure optimal physical and metallurgical performance in the plant. Increased throughput as a result of declining ore grades coupled with advances in plant design and practice, resulting in reduced organic losses, has pushed the limits of the status quo with respect to organic quality. Clay treatment of plant and recovered organic at the optimal dosage is critical in maintaining quality, however, achieving the optimal dosage through existing filtration capacity and practice can be difficult. Cytec has developed a process aid that increases efficiency of existing filtration equipment that has been successfully implemented at two commercial SX operations. ACORGA® CB1000 enables higher dosages of clay while allowing for more efficient use of existing filtration capacity. This study analyzes results from commercial trials and demonstrates that improved organic quality and clarity is achievable through optimization of current treatment practices. INTRODUCTION Decreasing ore grades have prompted copper solvent extraction operations to raise PLS flow rates, increasing plant throughput to maintain production1. The ability to process higher flow rates through existing mixer-settlers historically came at the expense of increased entrainments2. However, advances in mixer-settler design, practices and improvements in organic recovery processes have enabled operations to maintain, and in some cases reduce organic losses while achieving higher flow rates through existing equipment. Based on the increased demand on the SX equipment and reduced losses (or more efficient recovery) maintenance of the circuit organic quality through efficient clay treatment is now more important than ever. This paper discusses common industry practices and related issues in organic clay treatment, and presents benefits achieved in commercial operations through the use of ACORGA® CB1000 Clay Binder. IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGN AND PLANT PRACTICE Mixer-settler design has improved since the first commercial copper SX operation in the late 1960s. Advanced designs in mixer, settler, and settler internals have contributed to reductions in entrainments. For example, improved impeller designs have been reported to decrease organic in aqueous entrainment from the ‘old designs’ of 50-200 ppm3 to as low as 4 – 10 ppm confirmed via diluent and reagent consumptions . Similarly, operations are reporting a 20-50% decrease in reagent consumption when compared to the original design criteria3. Operations have optimized settler internals to increase coalescence and have improved settler operating practices which have been shown to reduce entrainments7. Comparison of the SX world operating data from 1999 and 2007 shows reductions in organic entrainment losses with increases in flow rates."

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines experimental test program which evaluated the effectiveness of using high explosives to enhance orebody permeability. To determine the effect of stress on the fracture network generated by blasting, fifteen single-hole laboratory tests in granite blocks up to .067 m3 (2.4 ft3) in size were blasted using .12 to .20m (4.8 to 8.0 in) of 1.6xl0-3-, 3.2xl0-3-, or 6.5xl0-3-kg (25-, 50-, or 100-grain) detonating cord. In situ stresses were simulated using polyaxial load cells to apply uniform stresses of 1.72xl06 to 1.76xl07 Pa (250 to 2550 psi). All of the blocks were sawed to expose the blast-induced fracture patterns for analysis.

An induction time apparatus has been constructed in the present work which has a sensitivity limit of 100-150 micro-seconds. The basic unit is similar to the one used by Eigeles and Volova (1960) and Trahar (1983), but it operates with a micro-computer and has a greater sensitivity. Using this apparatus, the flotation chemistry of the quartz-amine system has been studied. It has been found that at a given dodecylamminium hydrochloride concentration, the induction time is at a minimum at approximately pH 10.5. At this pH, the collector hydrolizes to form neutral amine and the flotation recovery reaches a maximumy,suggesting that iono-molecular species are the surface-active species responsible for flotation. This finding confirms the earlier conclusions obtained using the surface tension (Somasundaran, 1976; Finch and Smith, 1973) and contact angle (Smith, 1963) techniques. The induction time measurements have also been conducted as a function of particle size, collector concentration, indifferent electrolyte concentration and temperature. The results are compared with flotation data, and the activation energies for the bubble-particle adhesion have been calculated.

Electrochemical properties of silicate minerals govern their behavior in processes such as flocculation and enhanced oil recovery that can occur at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these properties as a function of temperature can be helpful in developing an under- standing of the role of these interfacial properties at non-ambient temperatures. Zeta potential of Sodium Kaolinite and quartz has been determined as a function of pH and temperature in this work. Both systems exhibited markedly different behavior at higher temperatures and also exhibited significant hysteresis. Results are examined in terms of possible dissolution of the minerals and surface reactions at different temperatures.

The Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation has provided Bureau of Mines researchers with an opportunity to investigate the hydrology of leaching an in place copper ore deposit. Hydrologic investigations of underground in situ copper leaching are being jointly conducted under a cooperative agreement. The hydrologic concerns of leaching operations at the Casa Grande mine focus on maintaining adequate solution injection and recovery rates, and on distributing the injected leach solution effectively within the ore deposit. Hydrologic considerations underlying these concerns relate to the permeability of the oxide ore zone during leaching, the unsaturated condition of the deposit prior to leaching, and the constraints imposed on in situ hydrologic design by the underground mine setting. The investigation involves monitoring of flow and pressure conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells, estimating permeability conditions using a hydrologic model, and on-site testing of hydrodilation and airlift pumping. Transient, fracture-controlled permeability is determined to be the dominant hydrologic consideration. A statistical modeling procedure has been developed for estimating changes in permeability during leaching. Flexibility in well design and operation is essential for accommodating the changes in fracture permeability that occur during leaching.

The Ortiz Mountains lie 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico in Santa Fe County (Figure 1). Approximately 350,000 ounces (11,000 kgs) of gold have been produced from the Ortiz Mountains since the 1820s. The 100 square mile (260 square km) Ortiz Mine Grant was secured from the Mexican government in 1833 by Jose Francisco Ortiz for the purpose of mining gold. The Grant has remained more or less intact to the present. The mineral rights are currently owned by Ortiz Mines, Inc. of Joplin, Missouri and are leased to LAC Minerals, USA, Inc. (west half) and to Gold Fields Mining Corporation (east half).

Improvements in computer technology and associated software have allowed the improvement and development of more advanced ventilation modeling software packages including those that have the ability to simulate the effects of a mine fire on the ventilation system in terms of heat, smoke and gas distribution. This ability has real applications for the mining industry in terms of emergency planning, training and response. The primary focus of this paper will be the benefits to training programs that this type of software can provide to all types of training for various personnel, from the newly hired inexperienced miner, mine rescue, atmospheric monitoring personnel and emergency evacuation drills. The results of the simulations can then be used to give miner?s more detailed information on what types of conditions they may face based on the type and location of the fire and the program itself can be used to manipulate the ventilation system in a way that emergency response personnel may (i.e. tear down stoppings to reduce airflow to the fire area) and see the effects in real-time.

Increased recycling of waste paper has been emphasized in recent years in both the USA and Canada for environmental and economic reasons. Removal of ink particles from the waste paper pulp is therefore necessary. One of the most promising methods for ink removal is froth flotation. Our study investigated the feasibility of a simplified flotation scheme which showed that about 90-92% ink removal can be achieved while 95-97% ink removal is achievable if a hydrophobic polymer is used ahead of flotation. The clean paper pulp recovery was over 90%. The effects of pulping pH, flotation pH, and concentrations of flotation and polymeric reagents are discussed in the paper.

Throughout time, the mining industry has been very successful in meeting the world's requirements for metals and materials while meeting the challenges of decreasing ore grades and increased emphasis on protection of the environment. This success has been due to the development and implementation of new technologies. A clear example of such a development over the past 25 years is the increasing use of leaching/solvent extraction/electrowinning for the recovery of copper from oxide and sulfide ores. The key to the successful introduction of this technology was the discovery and development of the hydroxyoxime liquid ion exchange reagents by General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Corporation). An important role was also played by the close working relationships between General Mills Chemicals and Ranchers Exploration which resulted in startup of the first plant in 1968 and between General Mills Chemicals and Bagdad Copper which resulted in the startup of the second copper SX-EW plant in August of 1970. Following on the heels of the hydroxyoxime development came the commercialization of other new chelating reagents based on different chemical functionalities, i.e., beta-diketones, alkylated 8- hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamidoquinolines. This initial spurt of activity was then followed by a slowing of development in terms of new reagent functionalities. Activity has continued in terms of further optimization/improvement of existing reagent functionalities but the commercialization of new reagent functionalities has slackened. This observation reflects the fact that the development of new reagent functionalities for metal recovery has become increasingly more expensive such that the right combination of price and sales volume must exist in order to justify the investment required to bring a new reagent to the market place. Given the dependence of the mining industry on innovation to meet the needs of the future, one can ask how these new developments, particularly in new reagents, will occur. The growing production of fly ash with the many attendant problems of economics, disposal and potential uses suggests an urgent need to consider those properties which are basic in its beneficiation. Fly ash is extremely variable and heterogeneous in all respects except its fine size. Because of its production in huge quantities, it becomes significant as a potential raw material. Detailed data are presented describing particle size and shape, density distribution and magnetic characteristics. The major components include combustible residuals, magnetite and silicates. These data are discussed in terms of beneficiation processes and uses, The results of air classification to produce a uniformly fine-sized low combustible product are encouraging. It is proposed that major increases in the future use of fly ash, must involve some form of beneficiation. Both the coal producing industries and the consuming utilities would benefit from increased utilization.

Most high, purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz-generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found which is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies - Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco, Inc. - mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, Illinois. Both companies mine from various locations within a ten mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Company mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The acid mine drainage problem in Pennsylvania is of continuing and growing interest to the coal mining industry, the state government and the citizenry at large. Approximately one-third of the total volume of mine drainage presently polluting the streams of the Commonwealth originates from active coal operations and two-thirds come from ?abandoned mine discharges.? For this reason the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries has mounted a significant research and action program seeking solutions to this two-fold problem. The Coal Research Board of the Department has sponsored a wide variety of research projects in an effort to study the treatment of acidic and highly ferruginous mine waters. A review of the published literature on the treatment of mine waters indicated that many laboratory and theoretical studies had been undertaken on various aspects of the coal mine drainage problem, but little applied, developmental, or engineering study had been undertaken. In January of 1964 the Board commenced a rigorous program using state and industry funds in an effort to find a ?least cost? solution or solutions to this vexing problem.

Four counties in Indiana--LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland--have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or are near high population areas and have no surface-minable limestone de- posits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Minable seams suitable for aggregate are 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 meters (300 feet) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 meters (2,000 feet) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain problem power plant flyashes which contain a high water soluble mineral content and which are known to yield inferior flyash based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash based structures. Favorable changes are evident in (1) sodium silicate consumption, where often approximately one-half of the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required; (2) processing costs; and (3) strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost instances-(above the cost of 30 dollars or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyashes) hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives required with problem flyashes to result in a savings of as much as nine dollars per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble, sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes.

I first met Milton Wadsworth in 1951 as an eighteen year old junior taking his mineral processing course at the University of Utah. He guided my senior thesis, evaluating the then new polymer flocculants on settling uranium leached ore pulps. This was before ion exchange and solvent extraction. After my military service and a brief working stint at Kennecott he supervised my PhD work. He encouraged me to be active in AIME and its constituent societies, where both of us have been directors of AIME and presidents of TMS. He has been a consultant for research groups that I have managed. Above all, he has been my mentor and friend for nearly 45 years. Thus, I am honored and particularly pleased to receive 5MB's Wadsworth Award.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

Geologic maps are indispensable tools in the modern search for mineral and fossil-fuel resources. They are the first essential step in understanding the lithologic nature and structure of rock units that form the land surface and that lie beneath it. They provide the basic foundation for planning mineral resource exploration programs and form the superstructure from which subsurface investigations are projected. In view of the economic application of such maps, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Government entered a formal agreement in 1960 to map Kentucky geologically on a scale of 1:24, 000, or one inch map distance equals 2,000 feet on the ground. A 7. 5-minute quadrangle would comprise the unit map area. A resolution which urged the preparation of a new geological map of the entire State was passed by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers in February 1959, and was presented to the Governor of Kentucky, the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Department of Economic Development (now Department of Commerce), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Kentucky Geological Survey with a request for support and action. The request was subsequently endorsed and actively supported by numerous civic and professional societies as well as representatives of various facets of Kentucky government, commerce, and industry. Monies to initiate the program were appropriated by the next session of Kentucky legislature; this appropriation was matched by federal funds (Hagan, 1961). Kentucky's state-wide topographic mapping project was completed in 1956, just four years prior to starting the geologic mapping program. The recently completed modern 7. 5-minute, 1:24,000 topographic maps made ideal bases for plotting areal geology. Had they not been available, it is doubtful if a geo- logic mapping program so large and comprehensive could have been undertaken.

The Emerald Mine No. 1, located in southwestern Pennsylvania is presently owned and operated by Cyprus Minerals of Englewood, Colorado. High volatile bituminous coal is produced from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam by both longwall and continuous mining methods. The coal is then mechanically cleaned on site utilizing a combination of heavy media separation and froth flotation methods prior to shipment to both the metallurgical and steam coal markets. The Emerald Mine is presently producing 2.8 million raw tons per year, while liberating approximately 6.5 million ft per day of methane. In light of the methane liberation rate, ventilation requirements have been significant and have always received utmost priority and consideration. Figure 1 shows the locations of the current and proposed shafts. Emerald utilizes two Joy (Model M120-58-880) axial vane fans on shafts No. 1, No. 2R, No. 3R. (one operational, one stand-by) The use of computer simulation of various ventilation networks was initially employed during the design stages (1975-1977) and has been utilized through the present. Obviously, the initial planning, under the ownership of Lykes Resources, was strictly theoretical. All the quantities were proposed and the resistances were based on prior simulations of other mines and mathematical formulas. However, once the mine was moderately developed, actual values were recorded and utilized. The Calico area lies within the Walker Lane fault zone, six miles north of Schurz, Nevada. The mineralized area is overlain by a thick section of Tertiary tuffs and ash-flows, that have been intruded by a series of andesite plug, dikes, and sills. The pre-Tertiary rocks outcrops only in two areas at one to two miles distance from the drilling areas. Underlying the volcanics are sediments ranging from siltstones, sandstone, calcareous shales, to carbonates of the Luning sequence. These have been intruded by one or more phaneritic intrusives ranging in composition from quartz diorite to quartz monzonite, with the development of a skarn zone on the south flank that contains extensive mineralization consisting of magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopytite, with traces of sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite. The magnetite, pyrrhotite, and part of the pyrite appears to be contemporaneous with the skarn, while, part of the chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, molybdenite, quartz, and calcite, occurs as minute veinlets cutting the other minerals. This later mineralization may be associated with a late stage of the same sequence, or possibly associated with another intrusive to the southwest. Geophysical work has consisted of aerial magnetics, ground magnetics, gravity, seismic, and induced polarization surveys. Preliminary induced polarization surveys indicated anomalies at depth, both over the magnetic anomaly and to the northwest. Subsequent IP work confirmed this earlier anomaly, and drilling disclosed extensive mineralization at depths of 400 feet on the northwest end and over 1,000 feet to the southeast.
