"Carbonic acid prepared on-site from carbon dioxide gas is widely used in water treatment and increasingly in some industrial applications. It has not seen extensive use in mineral processing but is an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid for pH control, with the need to counteract high pH levels caused by cemented backfill of particular interest. The fundamental chemistry of carbonate solutions as applied to flotation and flocculation circuits is described as well as plant-scale application. A project to introduce use of carbon dioxide for pH control at the Hecla Greens Creek lead-zinc-silver-gold operation is planned to begin operation in the first half of 2015. INTRODUCTION Flotation pH Control and Backfill Most sulphide flotation circuits are run at pH values ranging from slightly acid to strongly basic, with slightly basic pH the most common. Lead sulphide circuits are typically run at values from 7.5 to 9, with zinc circuits running at higher values of 9.5 to 10.5. This has been the case with ores that produce a natural pH in the circumneutral range, so that the pH needs to be raised. Although lime [Ca(OH)2] is the cheapest reagent in use to raise pH, soda ash (Na2CO3) or caustic soda (NaOH) are also employed where sodium ions in solution are preferred to dissolved calcium, or, in the case of soda ash, the presence of carbonate is desired. The use of soda ash for pH control in lead circuits has been widely recommended for many decades (1). The situation is necessarily different at operations where cemented backfill is used in underground mines (2). Backfill, whether emplaced as rammed paste or pumped slurry, is composed of mill tailings mixed with around 10% Portland or similar cement. When later mining occurs near or adjacent to previously backfilled areas, a considerable amount of old backfill is inevitably mixed with new ore and shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed can easily approach 20%, with periods of higher content not unheard of. The presence of so much backfill, with its high cement content, produces results largely indistinguishable from adding a large amount of lime to run-of-mine feed: mill pH in the grinding circuits can range above 11 and high concentrations of calcium ions are present. The need to raise pH disappears; the problem becomes to lower it."

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

The Urad property had been worked intermittently for over 50 years before American Metal Climax (AMAX) started an extensive exploration program on this property in 1961. The detailed studies of the property proved a large ore body of low grade molybdenum ore that could be mined by modified panel caving methods. Mine development and mill construction for a 5000 TPD operation was completed in July 1967. The Urad mine and plant site is located 55 miles west of Denver near Berthoud Pass. The plant elevation is 10,200 feet. The crushing plant is located underground because available surface area is re¬stricted by snow slide hazards. Crushing plant layout and ventilation system design for the Urad mine was based on our operating experience at similar crushing facilities located at the Climax operations. Low speed conveyors of generous width, adequate exhaust volumes at all ore transfer locations, large hoods and good conveyor skirting have made the Urad underground crusher dust control operations very satisfactory. Good maintenance and cleanup of the crusher facilities have made a clean working area with very low dust exposure. The ore from the mine is dropped approximately 1000 feet through ore passes to scraping drifts above the crusher and then transferred to the coarse ore bin by 150 h.p. slusher hoists. A reciprocating plate feeder under the coarse ore bin feeds a 48 x 60 jaw crusher. Ore from under the crusher is conveyed on a 48 in. belt to a vibrating screen where oversize passes through a 7 ft. Standard cone crusher. The crushed ore along with the screen undersize is conveyed on a 42 in. belt to a 1000 ton surge bin.

History Leaching of sulfide ore was first attempted by the Phelps Dodge Corporation about 1900 at Bisbee, Arizona, when Dr. James Douglas conducted experiments in an attempt to apply the leaching techniques then in use at Rio Tinto, Spain. Although this initital attempt was unsuccessful, research work was continued which culminated in successful leaching operations at Tyrone, New Mexico, in 1917 and at Bisbee beginning in 1920. Leaching has continued intermittently since that date, with material from the Lavender Pit being leached today. The Lavender Pit Leach Dump Stripping for the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, with mining operations on stream in 1954 and continuing to the present. All material removed from the pit has been classified as waste, leach material, milling ore, or direct smelting ore, depending upon grade and degree of oxidation. Lavender Pit leach material has been stockpiled in a single dump, called No. 7 Dump. This dump covers an area of approximately 135 acres and average about 300 feet in height. The dump has been deposited over a period of 20 years by truck haulage and contains several layers, each of which has a permeable boulder layer at the bottom and a compacted layer at the top. Leaching of Lavender Pit material was started in 1956 and has proceeded simultaneously with dump construction. Former leach pond areas and haulage surfaces have been ripped with D-9 tractors before deposition of succeeding layers of ore.

The precious metal mining industry in Nevada handles and generates a certain amount of hazardous materials and waste on a regular basis. These products range from processing material additives to wastes from laboratory testing, heap leaching, and hydrocarbon treatment and disposal. The volume of materials and wastes is dependent upon the amount of ore processed. Handling, treatment and disposal is dependent on the type of material handled and the waste generated. Owing to the health and safety concerns and due to the existing regulations that control handling and disposal of hazardous materials and wastes, the mining industry is obligated to comply with all applicable requirements for proper handling of these products. Plus, in an effort to minimize any impacts from this effort, the industry is continually looking for alternative methods to accomplish these requirements and to also minimize costs. This paper will discuss the general, and in some cases the specific conditions, by which the industry is coping with the issue and efforts to minimize any impacts from handling, treatment and disposal for hazardous materials and wastes. The subject of compliance with the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) requirements and bio-treatment of wastes and other technologies will be discussed.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. The leaching of heaps or sub-marginal waste ore dumps as it is practiced throughout the Southwest as well as other parts of the world, is the major method of secondary recovery of copper. In 1970, twenty percent of all domestic copper was produced by dump leaching operations (l). In recent years, this method has been successfully extended on a limited scale, for the recovery of uranium from low-grade ores (2). It is inevitable that this technique will be increasingly employed in metal production to satisfy the insatiable demand of our mineral based society. Although dump and heap leaching has been used effectively for some time (3) , its application has been more of an art than a science. Therefore, it is essential that we learn about the important factors and parameters affecting this versatile process so that we may make increasing use of this technique in the future. The dump or heap leaching process encompasses the preparation of ore for-subsequent inplace leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through porous rock masses, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and, if possible, regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the inplace environment, and the recovery of metals from the pregnant liquors. It is evident that this comprehensive scope of dump or heap leaching falls under the realm of interdisciplinary science and engineering requiring the application of the principles of physics, mineral engineering, hydrology, computer modeling, operations research, economics, and allied disciplines. A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

The Alimak Raise Method, using the Alimak Climber, has proven to be a new, fast, economical method of driving raises at the Iron King Branch of Shat-tuck Denn Mining Corporation, Humboldt, Arizona. In order to fully understand the advantages of the Alimak Raise Climber, it is necessary first to describe the basic machine; second, a complete cycle of a raise round; and third, the comparative speed and economy afforded the Iron King operation by using this new method of raise driving: The raise climber consists of a drilling platform that is raised and lowered by two 6.2 HP compressed air motors that drive, through roller chains and sprockets, three worm gears connected in series. These worm gears drive pinions which grip the guide rail rack. The worm gems are fitted with spring-loaded couplings so that a small rock or grit in the rack is passed over without disturbing the mesh between the rack and the other pinions.

The mineral olivine has been the subject of continued research by various authors. Paik (1967) conducted infrared and flotation studies of the adsorption of sodium alkyl benzene sulfonates on olivine. These studies are of interest from two points of view. First, in the metallurgical field it is of interest to understand the mechanism of silicate flotation using sulfonate collectors and second to a hydrologist studying the pollution of surface or subsurface waters it is of interest to study the reactions taking place when water plus sulfonates encounter a porous (silicate) medium. On the basis of Paik's study he was able to postulate a possible mechanism for the attachment of RSO3 (sulfonate radical) to the olivine surface. Parks (1969) has been studying the important influence of the structure of a silicate such as olivine on its dissolution mechanism and its related surface charge. Also Luce, a student of Parks (1964, 1965) has been studying the kinetics of dissolution of olivine using the techniques of direct solution analysis and infrared analysis. Certainly a classic in the study of silicate dissolution is the work of Murata (1940) on the reaction of orthosilicates (olivine in particular) with strong acid solutions. Many authors (Dejú and Bhappu, 1966. 1967. 1968, Dejú, 1969; Rhoades and Krueger. 1968, and Faust and blunter, 1967) have reported studies of the behavior of silicates immersed in water (especially orthosilicates) and have found that there is an exchange of cations from the silicate surface for H+ from the water. Studies by Dejú and Bhappu have also included the system olivine-water-amine.

Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

Depression of copper sulfides followed by MoS2 flotation is the most commonly practiced technique for Cu-MO separation. Although numerous organic depressants have been developed in the past, a majority of the currently used copper depressants are inorganic compounds (ex. NaHS, Nokes reagent, etc.). A unique advantage of organic depressants over the inorganic compounds is the potential versatility for design of the organic molecule to suit many requirements. The present study was initiated to systematically investigate the structure- activity relationships for a large number of organic complexing agents in comparison with the commonly used inorganic depressants that are often inefficient and hazardous. The results obtained in this study are discussed in light of the useful correlation obtained between practical solution redox potential and depressant activity. Several requirements, such as the presence of an active -SH and hydrophilic -OH or -COOH in the organic molecule, are identified for a reagent to be a satisfactory depressant. Some preliminary results on the desorbability (or destruction) of collector coating on the sulfide surfaces in the non-xanthate collector systems are also discussed.

The Jones Trickett Ratio (JTR) is generally used in investigations of fires and explosions for the determination of the composition of the fuel. This paper takes a close look at the JTR and finds it unreliable and ambiguous for the determination of fuel composition. A new index is presented, termed the (H/C) Index which uniquely determines the fuel composition. The (H/C) Index is simple to use requiring only the results of a single gas analysis of the combustion products. Experimental data testing the (H/C) Index for methane, propane, ethylene and coal dust are given, showing that the Index unambiguously determines the composition of the fuel. The (H/C) Index is also applied to the gas analysis data of several mine fires, illustrating how the Index changes with the progression of the mine fire.

A new bacterium, Thiobacillus cuprinus, can extract copper from chalcopyrite as rapidly as T. ferrooxidans. On solution with and without nutrient amendments and bacterial growth media were supplemented with T. ferrooxidans or T. cuprinus in shake flask studies. Both species extracted -42% of the copper using growth media. In one case, T. cuprinus solubilized approximately twice as much copper as T. ferrooxidans utilizing a seeded On solution. Thiobacillus prosperus also oxidizes chalcopyrite and tolerates high chloride concentrations. These sulfide-oxidizing bacteria are representatives of the mixed microbial community found in sulfide dumps. Rates of biological copper extraction from sulfide ores, using the native microbes, have been significantly enhanced by amending On solution with PGM.

There exists a wide array of industrial by-products that can be shown to produce beneficial responses in the soil/plant environment. These materials range from clean coal technology residues produced in the generation of electric power, particularly those high in gypsum, to mineral 'fines' produced by the aggregates and crushed stone industries. A number of these materials will be examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems will be discussed.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Electrostatic separation has found a number of applications since its initial installation as a processing method. Three broad types of electrostatic installations are discussed in order to provide a practical guide for three widely divergent uses of electrostatic separation. Only operating and installation data are covered in detail. A detailed technical treatment on the various types of electrostatic separation described in this paper can be found in the literature by F. S. Knoll, J. B. Taylor and J. E. Lawer.8, 9 ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF IRON ORE: WABDSH MINES, CANADA Introduction Electrostatic roll-type separator technology which had been in use in various forms since the 1920's evolved in the late 1940's when this separation process was developed and applied to the extraction of titanium bearing minerals from beach sands by J. H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. As a matter of fact, when Carpco first began investigating the possibilities of upgrading specular hematite, the first thought was in terms of magnetic separation; and the second thought was in terms of gravimetric separation. This paper describes the practices and methods used in a study of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) as an inexpensive deformation monitoring tool in underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is being developed near Carlsbad, New Mexico, for the disposal of transuranic nuclear wastes in bedded salt 655 m (2 150 ft) below the surface. Data collected from WIPP geomechanical monitoring are used to characterize conditions, confirm design assumptions, and understand and predict the performance of the deep salt excavation. The geomechanical monitoring program encompasses numerous geomechanical monitoring techniques ranging from inspection of observation boreholes to advanced radar surveys. In 1989 TDR was introduced as a monitoring tool with the installation of 12.7 mm (0.5 in) diameter TDR cables in the underground excavations. In 1993, a new TDR system was installed in a separate location. Based on experience with the previous installation, enhancements were implemented into the new TDR system that: 1.) extended the period of performance by increasing cable diameter to 22.2 mm (0.875 in), 2.) increased accuracy in locating areas of deformation by aligning cables with nearby observation boreholes, and 3.) improved data acquisition and analyses using a standard laptop computer, eliminating the chart recorder previously used. In summary, the results of a correlation between the TDR signatures to nearby observation boreholes and geomechanical instrumentation will be presented.
